Mount Sterling, KY(Zone 6b)

Yes I think I might get my wish! No more Frost, PLEASE! I am tired of covering and uncovering things!

Prescott, AZ(Zone 7b)

The weather here is a nice mid 70's. I've been cleaning up my front yard this morning. Check out what the Bird Cam caught yesterday . . . baby quail! Doing my best to tend to my health, nothing better than crawling around in the garden to make you feel better. I'm going to have to check my Liatris, it's one I got from the robin that really germinated well but has kind of been on hold. I planted a nice patch of it out in my nectar garden. Other great germinators: blue mist flower, asters, verbascum, and verbena.

I hope y'all have warmer weather now, I just can't imagine night temps in the thirties anymore! Ouch! The warmth is nice, has been upper eighties this week but we could use some rain again soon. Lakes here are still down 11 feet or so, lots of folks rebuilding their sea walls and docks since the waters have receded so much!

Dee those quail are adorable!

Juhur, I tried some of the teddy bear sunflower in there and have had at least half declare, but the rest of my robin seeds are getting started after we return from vacation or later :)

Hope everyone is enjoying the bird!!

Greensboro, NC(Zone 7b)

Thanks everybody! Nothing a little time in the yard won't heal. :)

FL Sunshine - sorry to see you go. Yes I'm lurking! Ha hahahah. It's getting late in the season to be starting things from seed, I'll admit. Given my circumstances, I've planted no seeds, except some paw paw seeds last winter and have one sprout. That's it!

Ha.

So buying some annuals here and there, a perennial now and then. Yard has reproduced itself to weed-like powerline easement wildflower glory. I am still pulling evening primrose and asters and rudbeckia from all over the yard to make room for the milkweeds and hyssops and verbena, etc. That's why I can't bear to leave. Main reason anyway. Gardening sure is putting down roots, even if you don't own the home. I don't know how you all do it.

I'm glad the Robin is getting closer. There are a lot of fat worms waiting for her in my yard. Keep me posted, and come on over to the mug swap if you want to have some real fun. :)

(Robin) Blissfield, MI(Zone 6a)

Amanda, I WS a Paw Paw too, however I have no idea if I have weeds (more than likely) or a Paw Paw sprout. Is it possible you could post a picture of your sprout?

Greensboro, NC(Zone 7b)

It's a large seed with only a leader stem coming out. Very distinctive, that's all I have though. I thought I'd have more, but there's just the one I can find in the soil. When I put it back in the soil I didn't know which end was up. Today I dug it up again and the growth tip was dark (WAH!!!) so I took it out of there and put it in some "black gold" seed starting mix, just at the surface.

I read that the seeds must be planted as soon as they come off the tree/before they dry out, so I planted three rotting fruits and hoped for the best.

Keep your fingers crossed that I haven't ruined it please!

thanks.
A.

(Robin) Blissfield, MI(Zone 6a)

Okay...fingers crossed, just don't forget to tell me when the way is clear to uncross them. I could use some of those digits for weeding.

Greensboro, NC(Zone 7b)

Thanks. :)

(Becky), Lipan, TX(Zone 7b)

Ugh sorry Amanda, yes that sure would suck to have to walk away from my garden now! This spring when all my hardwork paid off and I got to see things wake up from their winter naps, it was magic! And my beds are still half empty! Lol or should I say half full? Depends on your perspective I suppose, but either way I cant wait to fill them up!

I received some pawpaw seeds from the University of Kansas and they stated that if the seeds were allowed to dry out, germination decreased to less that 20%, and that was only after a matter of weeks, so they keep them refrigerated and mail them in barely damp potting mix. I wasn't planning on growing them yet, but I noticed after a week in my house they were germinating in the ziploc I had received them in! I potted the ones with "tails" into drink cups, and the unsprouted seeds on a damp paper towel and into a plastic container on my fridge. Hope to have 10 pawpaw babies soon!

Robin, don't worry! Mine weren't doing anything after over a week, so I hope to see some action when I get home Monday :))

Mount Sterling, KY(Zone 6b)

Ju have you still got any of the Scarlet Runner beans? I got a few from the Robin but I would like to have a few more, if you have any to spare. Or maybe Amanda has some that she Liberated from the big fat Fall Robin. Anybody got any for postage? Thank you all!

Anderson, IN(Zone 6a)

I have a few pods of them I saw them a few days ago . I did not grow them this year , not that I could not plant a few , Anyway Yes I have somewhere around a few dozen
I double wrap them in a bubble envy or they get crushed .

Mount Sterling, KY(Zone 6b)

Would you want to trade for anything or have me send postage? Your choice!

Baytown, TX(Zone 9b)

Sad thing is a small bubble envie cost 2.00 to mail. It really stinks

Anderson, IN(Zone 6a)

You put me on the list for Giant onion seeds when you get a few more and all is okay ,
Did you get any of the White Coneflower seeds . ?
I know their White Swan and not Alba , only eh , you know , unless I go read lists I don't remember worth Beans !^_^ lol

Iowa City, IA(Zone 5a)

If any of you were going to try the variegated Eupatorium seeds, i just found a bunch of tiny seedlings near the parent plant. I think it's safe to say that you could fall sow and ignore them.

Anderson, IN(Zone 6a)

I planned on a few, Have not got there so far . Good to know . Hyacinth Bean and Anthemis are all I am sure I have gotten to .

Hey kids - no I don't recall any scarlet running beans from last year's Robin but I will check. Let me know if you don't have them, Ju.

All's quiet here. I like that - it's not much different with me "working at home" and him out of the house anyway. I remember one thing I hate about my garden - the mosquitoes!!! :/

Itchy itchy.

Well I am holding my breath and taking calls/emails about the rooms for rent. Will keep you posted. Ha haha .

the computer goes where I go so I won't disappear.

Have a great Tuesday. It looks like another perfect day - would give real $ for a drizzle though.

xo
A.

(Robin) Blissfield, MI(Zone 6a)

Mosquitoes are the bane of my existence too, not many things I hate, but I hate them. Also looking for some rain here, they keep promising...

Mount Sterling, KY(Zone 6b)

Mosquitoes are horrible here because of the pond and the wet bottom on the property. They eat me alive in the evenings! I hate them!

(Becky), Lipan, TX(Zone 7b)

I hate them too!! If there's one mosquito in the room, it bites me again and again! And I'm allergic! My MIL has the audacity each time I complain about getting bit, that they are attracted to "male" scents, hormones.. okay, what are you trying to say? I smell like a man?!! LOL

Where is the robin now I wonder? And is Garry doing okay? Poor guy, can't believe his bad luck with the weather this spring..

(Robin) Blissfield, MI(Zone 6a)

I feel ya...those little things have the power to make me hang up my trowel. I sure don't like to be told when I have to go in. Somebody please start a mosquito thread (I've already got another one going)!

Baytown, TX(Zone 9b)

Mix pure vanilla in water. You will smell like cookies and deflect mosquitoes. Only worked 1 year for me but 1 year is better then none

SPWD they are attracted to carbon dioxide which we breath out. Boy is your MIL wrong.

I hope someone will post here when they like the seeds I added :)

(Becky), Lipan, TX(Zone 7b)

I will gladly try that, especially since vanilla is my favorite scent :)) Yeah, I used to take offense at the "male" comment, then it was just water off a ducks back LOL

Btw the seeds you gave me at roundup are beckoning me.. I keep telling them thy have to wait until this wknd, but they are really impatient little buggers ;)

Manhattan Beach, CA(Zone 10b)

Maybe the robin got so fat it turned into a chicken that can't fly anymore rofl!

Quote from StillPlaysWDirt :

Where is the robin now I wonder?

(Becky), Lipan, TX(Zone 7b)

If that's the case, she can come stay with me a few more days.. I'll lighten her up!!! LOL

Florala, AL

still patiently awaiting arrival..tryng not to tear mailbox down every day..lol

(Robin) Blissfield, MI(Zone 6a)

Gary she'll break that mailbox for sure...she's a real fat fatty! So worth the wait though.

Anderson, IN(Zone 6a)

(Burp !!!)

oh well Back to the Hideout ; I had to come back I always do , I'm typing this twice as this thing ate my post .
The grass I have gotten is A Tecta or Phragmites I am presuming it is Phragmites
I am cleaning my plant tables and the porch , if I ever get done I will start again .
I failed with the chamomile (german ) and I planted an Anthemis ,( I love it when I get another Perennial these days , (you all get the meaning my plant luck has gone to pot luck . I suppose . )
failed for the most part with the false nettle , (started a half dozen more today )
Can't find where I hid most of the Beans , You would think they are large enough to see ?

Was there someone around here that asked about Beauty Bush seeds .? wondering ..

Kitty found a wee bit of shade...cute. I think it was me that was asking for the Beauty Bush seeds, and you came through in the robin. You are on top of things Ju!

I have a shrub and small tree fetish that there's no cure for (perhaps its a chronic disease)...and I say that at the risk of being called a hypochondriac. I can grow and have seeds to grow but still not satisfied for some unknown reason. Oh well, I'll address it tomorrow, after all, tomorrow is another day.

Greensboro, NC(Zone 7b)

Hey Garry - it's my understanding that the fat bird is on its way to you. No worries!

Keeping track of the weight was really out of curiosity to see whether priority or flat rate mail was the best way to go. What has everyone found after weighing their options, so to speak?

I think I mentioned at the start of the thread it cost me less in a non-flat rate box.

Well keep her moving. I think maybe the only things I'll be starting this rate are sunflower seeds!

xox
A.

Baytown, TX(Zone 9b)

non-flat rate box was the cheapest and it was stuffed full :)

Anderson, IN(Zone 6a)

My entire problem with knowing all this is that Postal Hijacking is still a crime ,,lol ?

Why is it ? that there always has to be something , that ruins a great Fantasy ! darn it ... lol

I am looking around the threads and info files for info on Texas Wild (Red Agave ) I don't know how to grow or start it at all .

I believe it was under $8.00 when it was here , What a difference half a round makes , punch got stronger , the more folks added to it ...
