I didn't compare prices. I was a couple of days late returning the box and wanted it to get to its next destination quickly.
As I recall priority mail for 7 lbs. was less than $15.

Because of the amount of seed, I don't think a large flat rate box would be big enough anyway.
And if you print a label online you save a couple of dollars over the taking it to the P.O., the amount that you save depends on size and weight, and where it is going,of course.
I use my digital bathroom scale to weigh pkgs and it is really close to what the p.o. weighs. But I always have them check to make sure there is enough postage, so nobody has to pay on the other end. :)

It was only 9.90 for Priority Mail 2-day! well worth it for the variety of seeds in the box. It would not fix in any of the small flat rate.

Well all this is good information. I think there are Zones that make it cost less particularly the closer you are in distance. As I said - just a curiosity since all our prior Robins - at least the ones I participated in - used the flat rate boxes. It really did make for a plump bird. I remember having to sit on the baggies to squeeze every possible nth of air out to skinny the seed packs up as much as possible to fit it all back in there. :D
Can't wait to see what's in the box when it gets back here.
I think at the outset of the Fall Robin we discussed sending our remnants to Robin (!!!) who is in charge of the Newbie seed stash. Sounds like a good plan.

I am not sure if this has ever happened.
Susie would have to say, but she has always cautioned me in my swaps to beware. She has been doing the Robin or some variation of it since 1999. I would like to say give Garry the benefit of the doubt for a day or two more till I would get the steel toe hikers.

I noticed that Garry has a Facebook account. The last post to his wall was on 5/22 from his wife saying they might be having Facebook problems or computer server problems (ISP?).
Most people don't have several computers like I do plus internet access from my phone.
Hopefully he hasn't encountered a personal emergency that has him away for a prolonged time.
The last person who shipped the bird can initiate a trace to determine if it was delivered.
It has been delivered. We are on the job!!!

The Cherokee Bean seeds? They're native to southeast US so I thought I would try them. The foliage is lovely but I've read they are spring bloomers. Nada. It's the third or fourth season from seed.

Hey Amanda, I started my coral bean seeds last summer and over wintered it indoors, planting it out in march this year. It's really bushing out now and sending out side shoots but also, no flowers yet. Will keep you posted if that changes this year..
Sure do hope we find the bird, she has a lot of goodies inside for those still waiting :))

Stephanie and I have our feelers out and have some reports back. This may be a hiccup for Garrey and based on his past membership and the good things he does on DG we don't think it's malicious. We are going to send him a pre-paid postage label to ship to the next person on the list.
i, for one, know that I have had to hold the robin a couple of extra days when money was tight.

Thank you Stephanie so much for helping out with this - I sent a letter to Garry earlier this week inquiring about the Robin. Let's hope She gets back up and flying. Have never heard of such a thing as the bird disappearing.
Meantime, I had a mockingbird trapped in my chimney/fireplace this morning I had to catch and release. Easier to catch a mockingbird than a Robin. ;)

I sure know how life can take a turn on you.. You can have great intentions and get hit with a curve ball. If I would have had my accident a few days of getting the box no one in my family would have had any clue what the box was for nor would they had cared...took me 2 months to get back home and I was still out of it for about 2 more weeks and took another year before I was walking.
Lets cut him some slack. at least until we know what happend.
This is definitely a strange situation. I have been watching the status of the Robin, even though I was the 1st on the list. I am curious as to what happened to her. Kind of like that airliner that went missing, very strange...
I hope whatever circumstance caused this, is soon corrected and everyone (Garry included) is OK.
Sorry I haven't checked in sooner, have had a busy June. New gardening clients keeping me very busy. Have 5 now! So working 30 hrs a week on their stuff then mine. Laid up this week with Piriformis Syndrome. Like sciatica but not.
