NIGHT OWLS ONLY - OPEN: 12 a.m. to 6 a.m. (3rd Call)

Anderson, IN(Zone 6a)

I don't know what woke me up , cat , Santa , The Reindeer , who can say ,,
Cinnamon rolls sound real good ,right now ,
Pies, Cakes. A few wonderful things here ..
I'm sitting here watching the oldest version of A Christmas Carol , since I'm up ,
I have no thought for anything ,when I am as I am ,about now ..
Love the old ghosts from the movies ...
MISSED this years tracking of Santa ,,, oh well .. maybe next year ,,,
Hmmmm I have had that thought a few times ,,,lol

Somerset, KY(Zone 6b)

I see I'm not the only Night Owl up and at it. I turned my little heater on as it is very cold in my room. Not sure how long I can sit up and type. May just crawl back in bed were its warm and watch a movie.

Greensboro, NC(Zone 7b)

Funny, the Santa tracker.

I spent Christmas eve, Christmas day, and this morning till about 2 o'clock p.m. cat/dog/house sitting. I felt like Santa with so many houses to enter! Even had a list! Checked it twice or more.

I'm exhausted. But enjoyed bringing cheer to the critters for a day or two. All of them I've "sat" before at one time or other, so there was less awkward and more tail wagging. :)

For now, my nose and toes are cold. That's what happens when I pass out asleep on the loveseat or wherever. Then, if I log on to DG, for sure I'll be up all night. :p

Check you later!

I hope everyone enjoyed some special quiet time over Christmas. Although I miss my family at Christmas, there is some blessed relief in being able to let the rest of the world whiz by as I sit at my window watching the birds at my feeders. I get th most pleasure from my homemade heated bird bath knowing that this might be the only source of non frozen water for miles! All the critters are grateful for a sip. Once in a while a robin takes a bath. Such fun! Like I said, except for the house sitting, a little slow around here. :)

Bueller ? Bueller?

Everson, WA(Zone 8a)

Hi my name is Ernie I am definitely a night owl may I join you? I am a 71 year old former employee and enjoying every minute of the last 7 years well not those spent in the hospital so much.

Amanda we feed the birds from several feeders the largest holds over 50 pounds. I suspicion some birds crawl inside when the snow is flying and the bitter N.E. wind is blowing hard. We also have several suet cake and suet holders. Recently we bought a couple feeders that are described as peanut feeders and we have all these feeders pretty close to the house so we can watch.

With all this Amanda I can't think of why I never thought about giving them a heated bird bath. Thank you for the idea.

Oh please do! we are flying from dfw to Boston today, if we make the plane. I dreamed that we overslept and missed it. I think we're ok for time, but flying standby is always a little harrowing. The price is right though ($0)

Somerset, KY(Zone 6b)

1:30 AM and I'm wide awake. And it's cold. I'll be so glad when I can get the electric fixed so that I can run the heater and keep the trailer a little warm. Come to find out the guy that sold us this trailer, jury-rigged the electric so I'm constantly popping a breaker. $800.00 to replace the breaker box with correct breakers. Now that I've pd the place off, I can start putting money away in the savings acct for having an electrian come in and work on that box and the wiring as the whole trailer needs to be rewired.
I've got daylilies in a pot in the kitchen growing. Plants in the bathroom and praying for spring so I can take them all outside. With rain I can't get out and work on the clean up of all the dead branches from having the trees cut. I could not afford to have the guy do the clean up and bush removal so am doing it myself. I keep having people ask about claiming the firewood and I tell them to help themselves but no one shows up. I think they want firewood to burn this winter, but these were green trees so the wood will not be dry til next winter. Will be interesting so see how the trees grow back after this trimming, harsh as it was.

Somerset, KY(Zone 6b)

It''s now 3:30 am and I'' ve tried going back to bed but no dice. Can''t sleep so I''m up again. I wish it was summer and I could go out side and work in the yard.

Everson, WA(Zone 8a)

Here it is 1.10 or so and I am tired but awake. I have been checking for places to go fishing in Alaska. I am in a druken stupor from reading the ads I want to go fish at all of them LOL. I guess when he33 freezes over I will fish there to..

Today I was pretty much a sloth I was firmly glued to the couch. I watched the ball games through closed eyes.

Got up to a bowl of clam chowder Linda does an excellent job, a few bites of smoked salmon and a handful of good crackers and that was dinner. Worked for me. Those are two of my favorite foods.

Boy what I would give for a smoke. I quit 7 years ago and want one almost every day.Oh well I know I can't have just one because just one would lead to a pack then a carton, Nope I'm not having just one because ther is no such thing.

Everson, WA(Zone 8a)

wELL AFTER A HARD DAY OF DOING NOTHING IT'S ALMOST TIME TO POST. I STAYED UP ALL NIGHT AND THEN SLEPT FROM 11:00 TO 2;30pm . More watching tv from closed eyes lol.

Oops some how I managed to leave the caps thingy on. Now some folks act like they have been fowled if you do that. It is clear to me if some one pitches a hizzy like Sally school girl over all caps they were spoiling for a fight in the first place.. I mostly figure it's just their inability to type well sorta like me.

I think I may have a female cockatiel I have been looking for one for several weeks and found one Friday night. Of coarse it may be a male that's why I need to look . So no guarantee's but we will see.

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

marti, there are some nights where I just do not sleep.

Happy New YEar, Night Owls!! This is one night where everybody wants to be up at midnight LOL

Everson, WA(Zone 8a)

Well so much for a new little girl. When I got there the kid said wait a minute the house is kinda messy. I thought ok After a few minutes the kid came out with the bird perched on his finger . He sort of stumbles and poof away flys the bird. Dumb kid says he will look for it and if he finds it he will call me.

Here is the sad news those birds don't like it below 50 degrees and turning this one loose was like signing it's death warrant. I asked him how he could bring that bird out like that he said well it sat on my finger all over the house. I could tell he felt bad so I just said stuff happens. I called about another one but she was gone rats. I will get one sooner or later. Wish my old girl had not packed it in. Buddy is lonely I have been tempted to put in a couple of parakeets but I am not sure he won't hurt them.

I smoked six salmon and they are drop dead gorgeous and taste good to .I have a small turkey and two fryers in the brine now and will smoke them on Thursday. I really like the way the birds smoke. I will smoke them enough to flavor them and finish them in the oven. I can't get them hot enough in the smoke house to be sure all the bad bugs are dead.

Well here it is NYE and last night we had a horrific head on crash on a four lane . Both cars had one occupant both died one was drunk. The drunk one was wrong he swerved into the other lane at an intersection. I am happy to be home nursing my coke.

Happy new years to my new found DG friends.

Somerset, KY(Zone 6b)

Happy January 1st, 2014. As a kid in the 50's I never thought I would see 2000 and I treasure each new yr very much.
Do any of you remember the big scare when 1999 was coming to an end and all the predictions about banks failing, computers failing? And the new year came and not systerm failures. What a let down that was for some people. I had a friend that just knew the world, as we knew it, was coming to an end and when it didn't, she looked disappointed.

I guess it was a slow New Years at that. Here it is 315 am and not much swifter think I will go to bed

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

welcome aboard ernie. That is a lot of bird food!
We got five inches of fluffy snow tonight- after the usual vague and variable forecast had us getting 2-4 inches in the morning. THis one really had them fooled. I have just enough safflower and millet for another couple days and all get more. They will be chowing down big time with the snow cover.
THere's a sweet lithe documentary about the Parrots of Telegraph Hill in San Francisco. I had no idea parrots could live there.

Somerset, KY(Zone 6b)

We had snow here also. I don't know how much but I'm not going outside to measure it. IT"S to COLD!!! My water pipes are frozen again! DARN!!! I forgot to let water run last night when I went to bed and when I got up at 1 am it was to late. I will be so happy when I can get these pipes wrapped. I can't climb under the trailer and have to find someone else to do it for me.

Everson, WA(Zone 8a)

Marti001 I remember the days when we had frozen pipes not nice. When I built this house in 1972 I fixed it so they will never freeze as long as we have power. All the horozontial pipes are mounted on a sloping angle with valves on the ends so I can drain them in five minutes nothing to take apart just go into the house and open all the valves to every thing. Next pour some RV antifreeze into the toilets and each sink drain. Last turn off the breaker that runs the water pump. Don't want water running every where while you sleep . Been there and done that lol. Hope you get it fixed in a hurry. I was in your state a month ago at a tiny community called Pleasureville is that close to you.

Sallyg I didn't know parrots could live in SF either. I thought all those little tropical type birds needed to be warmer than 50 degrees and TGH surely gets less than that at times.. Shows you what I know lol.

The smoked chicken and turkey turned out very good. I gave my BIL one for his dinner and he said perfect he had a roast in the crock pot and was having daughter and family for dinner when wife gets home. Smoked chicken or smoked anything is usually something you either like or hate not much in between or at least that's the way I have experienced it.

Blood draw in the AM yuck it's nothing serious they just want to be sure I am still alive. According to my wife of 48 years I am near dead for 20 or so lol.

.man, we got the last flight. Out of Boston. We went because my mother had two events, a family Christmas dinner on the 28th and a birthday dinner on the 1st for my stepfather. In between we were supposed to visit my husband's son and his kids and another son. Well the older son was sick and getting rehydrated and contagious, so we tdidn'tn gwt to see him or his kids. The youngrr son was "busy." So we spent most of the time vegetating in our hotel. Flying seems to take more and more out of us the older we get.

Happy 2014, night owls!

Milton, MA(Zone 6a)

Good morning, night owls! I am always happy to remember this thread. Far superior to googling "insomnia and MS." Since we're awake after midnight, maybe we're morning owls, lolol.

I'm gonna try an Ambien.

Greensboro, NC(Zone 7b)

Hi Carrie and night owls, all. :)

I have been trying to keep the sleep during the dark and light times where they belong, but the weather this past week made me want to nap. I guess the sleep schedule is off again. I slept on th love seat twice with cats and dogs. Bent in half, sometimes it's easier just to stay there than going thru the routines before "bedtime."

This week the last semester of my grad program starts. Maybe that's why I'm awake. So much to do and what seems like not enough time. Court and I are seriously looking at relocating to the Great Plains region where there are exciting work opportunities for me. But the cold. Aye, there's the rub. So I told him we'd do a road trip and I could set up interviews along the way. Neither one of us have driven cross country before. Not sure we'd go all the way, but we'd both love to see some of Oregon and/or Washington state.

It's been on my mind since I have been following it, something else I am thinking of while awake... in Utah an ecological mystery has been solved in an unexpected and alarming way. Scientists have documented at least 27 illnesses/deaths o the American Bald eagle due to West Nile Virus. Apparently they were feeding on some type of water fowl susceptible to the virus.

Calamity. Several years ago we were asked to report deaths of larger birds such as blue jays, crows and TH like. Who'd have thunk it. These are some of th things bouncing around my brain in th pre dawn. I'm not looking forward to today's projected temperatures. The coldest we've seen in some time. It IS January which is always the coldest month here. We've had a lot of rain, thAnkfully not snow, and TH ground is pretty squishy! It is time to start planning the garden too...I always seem to be behind. Well maybe if I got more sleep I would be more productive. HA!

Well I'll go back to trying. Happy New year! I don't think I've been able to say that here either. Looking forward much to 2014 in its entirety. :)

Everson, WA(Zone 8a)

Amanda work in general is sparse in Washington but who knows maybe there is more in the legal arena. Both states are separated by mountains East and West. The East sides of both states are less populated and are hotter and colder. The West side is wetter

Everson, WA(Zone 8a)

I can't believe the aero space machinist wanting another vote vote on the grounds some members could not vote because they were on vacation.. The majority of them were prolly vacationing at home and could have voted. No one was stopping them.

They should be thankful they have a job and I have news for them lots of people don't have pensions, Lots of people don't have 401 K plans. Lastly lot's of people don't even have jobs. Grow up you whiners.

Other than that it is cold here but not bitter cold because the wind is still.

Milton, MA(Zone 6a)

I am awake an awful lot around 3-4 am,, and if it were easier to do, i would post a long essay every night. Maybe I should try to address this insomnia thing. Maybe it's a normal part of aging. Do you guys feel that wakefulness is pathological?

Somerset, KY(Zone 6b)

Well, here it is 1:30 am and I'm up. Not only have I been unable to sleep, but with this cold I have I keep coughing and sneezing and can't sleep.

I'm also dredding Monday as it is the first anniversity of my sisters' passing away. I'm going to work on Monday at the Community Actions Agency. I volunteer there when I can. At least I will be busy and can't just sit and think about how much I miss sissy. I have some quilt feelings about her passing. Towards the end, I was praying that she would pass quietly as her health had gotten so bad that I was looking at having to place her in a home and I knew that would upset her. But I could not handle her here in this old trailer. Hallways are not wide enough for a wheelchair to get up and down them, much less into the bathroom.

And this last freeze finally took it's toll on my old water pipes and they ruptured. Now I have to figure out how to afford to pay someone to climb under the trailer and fix the pipes. Till then I am bucketing water from my friends store, which she is getting ready to shut it down and than I will not have anyplace to get water. I may have to climb under there myself with my bad back and bad knees. It's all PVC what can be so hard to cut out and replace some of it.

Milton, MA(Zone 6a)

don't feel guilty, marti. your sister's passing sounds like it was a mercy for her and for your family.

my father had a massive stroke in 2006. he had been living the swinging bachelor life in santa fe, nm. now he's in a boston area nursing home. i keep hoping he'll get pneumonia and quietly drift off. he is such a fraction, cognitively, oof what he once was. he was always rude and snarky and camtankerous. now he is ruder and more snarky. he has 2 sisters and a brother nearby, only one of whom can stand to visit him. he is 77 now and has been completely dependent for 7 years. my youngest crother's wife just had a baby, dad says he wants to go to kid's HS graduation. that's 18 yrars away!! he didnt even go to my kids' graduations. (sigh.) is it horrible of me to pray that he'll die in his sleep?

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

My turn to be awake tonight
I might try making more lists and notes - it often seems that Im awake when I have unresolved things to think about making sure I do/remember the next day or week....lists and notes would help me feel like I don't have to keep running them through my head- maybe.
marti- don't feel guilty. Many of us have faced that nursing home question and for many it is a big disruption and not an easy thing for either party to cope with. I'm not dissing nursing or care homes, I have been in several and I know there is a need and a lot of good care.

My MIL is down to day to day memory with Alzheimers' We have to wonder what comes next and a sudden massive stroke or quick pneumonia that ends it all would certainly seem a 'peaceful' end.

Greensboro, NC(Zone 7b)

Hello night owls and early morning birds.

I've been tryin to do the sleep on time thing. It makes getting up in th morning sooo much easier. HA!

But then again so does setting the coffee pot to be filled with that delightful elixir when I go out to the kitchen.

So much going on there day.. I'd love to post during daylight hours, but you know how I am about RULZ.

T hi morning felt a bit of th promise of spring. It was delightful. Especially after all the weather we've been having.

I'm going to make it brief as I think I felt a headache knocking. :/

Hope all's well!

The ever elusive ;
winter springtime (almost)
a perfect day
everything just the way you would have it
no insomnia in existence
The perfect flower
the perfect food
The perfect pet //
ooh yeah ...lol etc ...
the etc , that has defined meaning to comprehension ...

Everson, WA(Zone 8a)

Was a purrfect day for us we canned smoked salmon today.. We did 42 half pints and 16 full pints.Hope it is as good as the last I used a different brine on this one.

Somerset, KY(Zone 6b)

Well, I see I'm not the only one up this early.
I have to drive to Lexington for a doctor's appointment this morning. See if she can give me something to get rid of this nasty cough and sore throat that has been bothering me for the last 2 weeks. Nothing I eat or drink tastes good, but I'm forcing myself to eat and drink even just a little every few hrs. I went for 2. 5 days with just napping and not eating or drinking and my blood pressure bottomed out and I passed out when I stood up. Do not want to repeat that episode.
My car broke down, refused to start. Turns out I needed a new starter. The one on the Jeep froze up and burned some wires. Lucky for me the mechanic said it did not set the engine on fire. So now it has a new starter and is running fine.

Everson, WA(Zone 8a)

Grasshopper I rarely sleep on a normal schedule so I am usually awake at this hour.

Milton, MA(Zone 6a)

i cant remember if sally put that link about ancestors sleeping in 2 shifts here, but it makes more and more sense to me. if i stop thinking about insomnia as pathological and think about it as the way i sleep.

i have been playing solitaire for hours. i think i like it because it restores order to a mixed up world, or at least to a deck of cards.

Somerset, KY(Zone 6b)

Well, I've had 2 hrs sleep and I'm up, wide awake. And no one to talk to.

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

I play way way too much of a dumb game called colored lines. I can get hooked on computer games. I think its like gambling without the money. Just the thrill if i do well
. We had a bit of hint at spring recently too! Nice respite.
I just heard great horned owls. We dont hear them often and its a thrill for me.

Off work tomorrow and working up some resolve to make it a productivr personal day and not a dumb pointless one.

Anderson, IN(Zone 6a)

I am always reading and watching here , Seems I am here about this time every night , the regular irregular thing as far as sleep is concerned ..
Enjoyed the last two days in the 40's myself .
Next week some cold returns ,, oh well , make do while , and games are relaxing ..
If their not the ones that cause headaches ,,
Sometimes I start cleaning , to entertain myself , does not usually last long though .
Not much of anything going on here ...

Everson, WA(Zone 8a)

Good morning been retired for almost 7 years don't miss it at all. I sleep when I need to sleep not when the clock says it is time to go to bed. When I worked I had to sleep or risk falling asleep at the wheel. I did 100 miles round trip for 18&1/2 years working for scrooge Mc'Nelson. Who was a nice guy on the surface but was quite the opposite in real life. He had to mess with every plan you made even if it cost him money . Oh well I am so glad to be gone. Btw I kicked his arss in court in the end because he denied my unemployment claim. Score one for the little guy lol..

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

Hubby came home from on the road and did not need dinner, so I completely lost track of time, and was reading in bed in jambes by 8 pm. what? Fell asleep at nine for an hour; I knew I would be up later.

youtube has certainly come a long way since its early days as a bunch of loser home videos! I watched a couple Shirley Bassey performances.

marti have you fixed the pipes? PVC is easy to cut and glue.

Milton, MA(Zone 6a)

:because of all my meds, I am on a pretty controlled schedule of when I sleep and when iI don't, except for this pesky early am wakefulness.

book club tomorrow--we read Tender Morsels by Margo Flanagan. Strange book, happy ending. Anyone else read it? Parts of it were riveting but other parts were too confusing.

Somerset, KY(Zone 6b)

Well, got my computer back from the geek yesterday so am back on line. It is so cold around here. Temp down to 2 degrees and so hard to keep warm. I'm volunteering at the Community Action Agency. We are helping people who have received disconnect notices on their electric. I still have no water in my trailer. Pipes are broken under the trailer and no one wants to work on them in this cold.

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

I'm glad you're back online- its a good distraction, if anything can keep one's mind off this cold!
It was zero yesterday when I checked in the morning. Schools had delay, but this is the first time I've ever seen them run buses when many neighborhood streets were still covered with packed snow. The deep cold affected snow removal.
