Some have seen this also , Fleabane(Philadelphicus) and Aster(Calico) , There is White Yarrow working it's way into this ;
All aster family . growing together into one another , only weed able in this so far is a Dandelion .
A lot like they grow as one plant and their staying healthy doing that so far .
Weeds keeping down weeds .. I like the idea ...^_^
Will have to see if the Echinacea barely in the pic to right) works along with this , The grass got in there (more chores)

Nice spread of wildflowers there, Ju.

And thanks for the new thread.

I'm disappointed. I entered into a trade agreement and I received sort of what I was offered. When I joked that I was "trying to kill" the species she was looking for, I certainly never expected to receive nearly dead plants and cuttings from her in return. My plants look like floral bouquets by comparison.

I thought if I were better at rooting cuttings the three that she sent wouldn't die, but no. I believe they are on their way.

-sigh-

What are the plants your looking for? I remember you talking about Tropicals , I don't do many .
Plants here , that naturally grow here , are looking a lot better ,
Others that I have to care of are)) oh well..

Be back with pic's of the Penstemon running about now , their looking good for now , I love pretty plants that don't take much to care for . Give them a good set & (zoom ,, I love it !!!

I forgot the Thank you also Amanda , and I am becoming a real BIG fan of Dandelions !!! (lol)

I have mentioned this before. I have paid good money to buy organic dandelion greens for my iguana to eat. Highly nutritious for people too. There are a lot of varieties of dandelion too, so you need a keen eye to identify them. :)

Anderson, IN(Zone 6a)

I have three at least , two arrow serrated and a smooth leaved not as common . Unless prepared for me , they all taste nasty raw ... I like joking about their being easy to grow , as they do that all by their self ..
Dug some Burdock root for tea today , have some Nettle tea made and got enough to freeze some for winter ,,
I like tea plants , Burdock is listed as annual and Biennial , mine run from older roots if left alone though ,etc they stay like perennial .

Amanda ~ Shall we send you some dandelion seed, when available? They are not active now.

Greensboro, NC(Zone 7b)

Haha nooo Ev. I tried that once and then thought, "what, am I nutz?" :)

Thanks though.

[quote="AmandaEsq"] I then thought, "what, am I nutz?" :)

LOL That sounds like me !!!

here's the Penstemon .
#1&3 are the little plants from stem on the ground , covered those and new plants .
#2 one of the larger plants still getting larger , bloomed this year but not mature .

Pretty! I am looking forward to blooms from one I received at our RU this spring.

Anderson, IN(Zone 6a)

There is a larger plant making heavy branches and leaves like the little plants.
Of course , that is what I planted on the ground and covered ,
This plant is going to get large , like a small shrub , at least that appears to be the direction it is growing as .
I surrounded a large mound hill of earth with stones from a walkway that did not exactly work.
filled the top space with sand and gravel , then planted the Penstemon plant ,
Lot of doodling for a set for a plant , only it's worth it ..
Bloomed 13 or 14 weeks this past spring ,,summer and pretty foliage also ..
Definitely a nice plant!!! ^_^

I'm collecting a lot of seed this time of year. Between bouts of rain and drizzle. I'm in a couple of seed swaps.

Who else is working on their seeds?

Anderson, IN(Zone 6a)

you know ..lol

I have so many seeds drying on my kitchen table on junk mail and paper plates and what not - can't tell if that bunch on the junk mail are cantaloupe or butternut squash, will find out when I plant them next spring I guess....

Herbs hanging in the dining room drying need off the stems and into the jars, amaranth seed that I cut today needs a place to dry so I guess I will start getting seeds in envelopes.

I have no idea what kind of dandelions I've got growing, but if you want me to dig some up just let me know.

I've been away from my garden for weeks, won't get back there until next Friday. I have no idea what seeds will still be collectible... I didn't have time to do it before we left, was too busy stabilizing new beds, getting things out of pots and into the ground, hoping not to come back to disaster. But I have been buying seeds here and there- can't resist a sale!

Greensboro, NC(Zone 7b)

I am self exiled from garden centers and plant sales. :)

Pam I hope you are pleased when you get back to your garden. I hope it will be a nice homecoming after so much time away.

Las Vegas, NV(Zone 9a)

Amanda, my Casita (sp) is getting ready to bloom. High winds tonight so I hope the bloom does not get blown off. Tree service will be here Wednesday to trim the trees. I am going to put a very large garbage can over it to make sure when they trim the tree above it they do not drop limbs on the plant.

Greensboro, NC(Zone 7b)

Phew...good luck with that one Sharon!

has anyone gotten vitex seeds to start? I've read it's easy, I've read somewhere to soak seeds in warm water or even boil them to scarify, then germinate, I'm not buying sulfuric acid. Hints?

Las Vegas, NV(Zone 9a)

Gypsi, here in Las Vegas, the seeds just drop off the trees and seed themselves anywhere near a water source. Down by the golf course, we have to thin them out every winter.

Fort Worth, TX

well I settled for soaking some in warm water this morning, and I have some bog plants from my pond in the green house, so after they have soaked should I start in soil or sprinkle in with the bogs or half and half and see what happens? Or should I start them INDOORS. It is freezing out this morning, greenhouse is maybe 45 degrees tops, drops to 38 or so at night I am sure.

Anderson, IN(Zone 6a)

So how is the Vitex growing ,,

I dug through a couple feet of snow awhile ago , Planted Ascelapius Incarnata seeds , "ice ballet " Wintersown to the above method .

Got to get my poppies out there ,, winterstorm brewing and windy here now though ,, hopefully this week ,,,

Ju,

Ice Ballet is so pretty....one of my favorites.... I planted the seeds you sent me during our cold spell... hoping that will give them what they need to sprout... fingers crossed! It's warming up a lot now and I don't know if they had enough cold temps to make it. I sure hope so. Many of last years milkweeds are putting on some growth now and my nicotania are flowering from the warm weather. We are supposed to get some lower temps this week... not sure how low they will go... probably not enough to make much difference. Thanks again for the seeds!

Anderson, IN(Zone 6a)

NF2932; Mine do not always germinate well outside either , and as some say before, July ,August before the Natural self sown sprout up .
The ones I manipulate , as in cubes and watching over do grow though , It may take them a while ,, if not , let me know ,, We can stratify a few in the Garage , then send them so you can have them for our BF Garden friends ,,
Zone differences of plants are incredible ,, long , long , list and information ,,

Winnetka, CA

Ju... great idea.... thanks!

Anderson, IN(Zone 6a)

I'm doing indoor pepper starts from seeds , a few flowers (annuals) for early blooms , Won't do many , I've got the garden fever winter causes ,, lol

You know , gotta plant something , anything ,,!!! Gotta .

Winnetka, CA

I completely understand! I have been sprinkling snap dragon seeds and catchfly into some of my beds... hoping for rain... but I've been watering as we haven't seen any. I have the weather for planting... just don't have the time...as my hubby likes to say... if it's not one thing... it's 10! -:)

Sierra Foothills, CA(Zone 8a)

Nancy ~ You haven't got rain yet? I think you might be getting a gullywasher in a day or so. We have had rain, off and on for the last few days.

Winnetka, CA

RAIN TODAY!! Woo-hoo!!

It's pouring and most welcome.... I have been out with the umbrella planting the plants that arrived yesterday from High Country gardens... perfect time to plant... although my son thinks I have lost my mind... -:)

Hey guys, haven't been on here for a long time, and my computer didn't even let me know you all have been. Just thought I would put something I read in today's paper in here for you that plant seeds. Don't know how true it is, but for what it's worth, here it is:

In the garden column of today’s paper the gardening garu said the following:

One useful tip I picked up a while back was the importance of properly orienting seeds for better germination results. I learned that seeds only contain enough energy to send roots downward and its seedlings upward.

For round seeds, it doesn’t really matter which way you place them in the ground
They should sprout without any problems. But for seeds that aren’t round, if you don’t orient them properly in the soil, they’ll waste their limited energy stores on orienting themselves and often die before they see the light of day.

For oblong seeds like those of melons squash and cucumbers, plant them with the pointed end facing downward. Corn seeds are also planted this way. For bean seeds, which are kidney shaped with a little scar in the middle of the curvy side, plant the scar facing downward.

Once I learned this, I’ve had excellent germination rates so keep this in mind as you plant your seeds. It’s a little extra effort, but well worth it.

Good luck with your seeds. Jen

Anderson, IN(Zone 6a)

Hi ya Jen , I know that pumpkins and Watermelons do and did well that way , (i've done that )
Those two will push their way through a few feet of mulch planted that way (as said , I have done that ,
That gives me trouble with tomato and pepper seeds and such , Those stick to my fingers , and using tweezers to set them is fatigue causing ,, lol
It is good information to have ,,nice useful (trick) to have ,,

Why would you need tweezers for the tomato seeds?

Anderson, IN(Zone 6a)

To set them in the earth sideways , instead of flat , tweezers and a pin , How ridiculous is that ? lol
It sets those flat seeds sideways though , with a little practice ..

No Peppers up yet , indoors under lights
Planted a half dozen winter jugs of Daylily Today
Getting ready to do herbs .
2 new inches of snow today , 4 inches away from a new record , Thank you that meteorological Winter is over ,, About two weeks left ?

Where do you get the 2 weeks from JU? If we can count on that, I will buy it. Don't know how you can take that. You and Lee are in hell for 6 months out of the year. I am not nearly as bad as you guys other than the fact that I am older and have all these joint problems.

I know JU, you don't think I have anything to whine about and you are right. Take care,

Anderson, IN(Zone 6a)

March 20 th , First Day Of Spring !!! ^_^^_^^_^ Vernal Equinox?
Meteorological Winter ended Evening of February 28 ?

Only hoping the weather cooperates !!!^_^^_^^_^!!!

Northeast, WA(Zone 5a)

OK, I will go with that. We are suppose to have Wednesday with 50 degrees. Can you believe that? Well, they have 3 or 4 days to change it.

It really is too bad we can't count on them. Poor Lee, she is -30 degrees tonight. How gross is that? 'nite. jen

Anderson, IN(Zone 6a)

Something easy , but fun , A Zinnia , fourth day , There is a sprout in the middle of the pic .
Heat , heat , Heat , With these . for germination .

I think I have finally figured out how to sort these as seeds ,,lol
I will pic again when it gets it leaves up .

I have never done that. Have you done that with your peppers, too? I am not going to do it. I think that they find their way just fine. (I could be wrong.)
