Terry I don't normally go to but one of those sites. I went to all of them, and the only one I had to scroll right or left on, even with text set to largest, and zoom at 150 was the Craigslist site.
I did have to scroll some to see it all.
Size of text area, social media space and cut-off posts
I don't have to scroll but my zoom is set at 115. I will have to check that later and increase my zoom.
Terry,
I made a boo-boo.
My older Dell Laptop computer running IE8 and Windows XP has the beautiful screen fix, and I don't have to scroll left-right to read the posts. The text is a wonderful readable size, and everything's in place as it should be..
However, my NEW HP desktop computer at the job is still wonky. I'm at 150% enlargement, and having to scroll left-right, still...
Seems there's an issue with the older vs. the newer Operating Systems, maybe?
Linda
At last a horizontal scroll shows up here...if zoomed above 100%. 105% would be ideal for me at present settings.

Hi Linda,
It's probably not the Operating System, but your browser settings. On your HP desktop computer, try hitting Ctrl - a few times. If you go too far, and need to go back the other way, hit Ctrl + as much as you need. That will zoom you out to a point where the scroll bar goes away. Of course, the text will be smaller then. I prefer to have the scrollbar and larger text.
I'm not too wild about the wasted ad space and the empty margins beyond that. It would be better if the forum had separate code for the paying subscribers and the visitors. In my opinion.

I found this article to be helpful in me understanding the complexities of getting websites to play well with various old and new browsers:
"Coding Horror: Two Types of Browser Zoom"
http://www.codinghorror.com/blog/2009/01/the-two-types-of-browser-zoom.ht
Thanks coleup for posting that here also! I think it helped a lot of us understand better.
Thanks coleup! I guess I'll try it again later. Every time I click on the link I keep getting "This webpage cannot be found"...weird.

Nuts, see if this works better. (It is a long url so mabe it got cut off when I posted it above! lol)

I also posted this on the other thread
Excerpts from
http://www.printmag.com/imprint/10-reasons-rethink-your-website/
"Websites don’t last forever. Without consistent upkeep, sometimes they barely even make it three years! The rapid change of web technology can overtake what was once state-of-the-art and reduce a website to a quaint relic in pretty short order, which is why it’s so critical to realistically consider the “shelf life” of your website when you first build it."
"If your website was built five years ago, there is a very good chance that some aspect of it is dysfunctional or perhaps even completely invisible to many of today’s web users. Conversely, if your website was built within the last year or so, it’s likely that without a lot of patience and work, it doesn’t function properly or look right in older browsers, even though many people still use them. Actually, looking at browser optimization in the reverse—in terms of optimizing today’s sites for yesterday’s browsers—might be a more helpful way of illustrating this point.
Browser optimization used to be the greatest lament of the web developer, as significant differences occurred between versions. But general web standards ushered in a time of comparative stability—one during which a three-year-old website could conceivably still work and look great on the latest version of Firefox. Today, even with at least four big players in the browser space, that stability is undermined by the continued use of Internet Explorer 6. Released almost a decade ago in 2001—2 years before the first version of Safari, 3 years before the first version of Firefox, and 7 years before the first version of Chrome—IE 6 is like the ant of web browsers. It’s not smart, but it’s a survivor and has managed to spread … everywhere. (I wanted to compare it to the Borg, but the resistance of developers everywhere is not futile!) But back to the problem: Because IE 6 does not support CSS version 2, web developers have to create hacked versions of websites’ CSS files that divert from web standards in order to ensure that they function (fingers crossed!) in IE 6. This kind of thing is like time-traveling back to the 10th century with all the equipment to create a mini electrical grid just so you can plug in a lamp. So if we have to do all this work to get current websites to work right on outdated browsers, you can see why a website created when they were current would be a busted eyesore today!"
"The growth of the mobile industry is unprecedented and will certainly impact your business even in the next few years. Since Apple’s mobile platform devices first launched, more than 120 million people have signed up for service. Apple expects more than 100 million iPhone subscribers alone by the end of 2011. By 2012, an inflection point is anticipated at which time the number of active smartphones will exceed the total number of personal computers in the world. Soon, mobile will no longer be a peripheral web platform. It will be the primary one. In the meantime, the technological change within the mobile space is in rapid flux. Without beginning the process of acclimating your web presence to the mobile platform now, you are likely to experience a much more difficult transition later."
Thanks a lot, coleup! The 2nd one worked great! We're on our way out the door, so I'll either read it later or tomorrow morning. Thanks, also for the excerpts from Printmag!
YAY, desktop computer is not cutting off the text boxes anymore! Just have to zoom once to get some larger type, but don't have to scroll left to right...
At least until tomorrow, when I get a new computer installed. IE8 with Windows 8.
Hopefully, I won't have anything to report...
Linda
Linda, so glad yours is not cutting off text, mine still is mainly in d-mails. Yesterday I had an issue with the tabs being vertical instead of horizontal. Once again, I cached and had to restore all of my passwords (I lose them every time I cache, clean cookies, etc. The tabs stayed horizontal and they still are today. I can't read messages, personal or forum, because 'Product Sources' and sometimes 'Garden Showcase' block and mix in with what the member typed. Is anyone else having this issue? Terry, can you check on this? I am running Windows 7.
Jnette and others who have had their limits pushed on this...I know the aggravation as we are all experiencing this but most of the time change is good once we adjust. Most companies (cable, phone, etc.) will offer a discount to try to compensate for the disruption and DG is generating monies from subscriptions. As long as this change is taking I am surprised they haven't offered a rebate to the paying members as of yet. Example : For your patience we are crediting your account for one free month that will be added on to your expiration date. Or something like that.
Connie
Connie, there should be a dialog box that asks you to check or uncheck what you want to clear, whether it be cache, browsing history or whatever. There is no reason for you to erase your passwordz at the same time.
If you can't figure it out, Dmail me & I'll walk you through it.
You're sweet for offering help summerkid ::))) If you are computer savvy you are welcome to come to my house to teach me all about them. Hubby and I will feed ya and share plants with ya too lol. There is a box that you can check to remove passwords but I always make sure it stays UNCHECKED. I only check temporary and cookies but it still takes them out. I don't know why.
Thanks:)
Connie
Well! Next time I'm anywhere near Missouri then!
It's definitely annoying to lose your autofill passwordz. (Although ... did you know that your browzer keeps a list that you can look at? On Chrome, it's under Settings.)
Terry,
My new computer is being installed as I type. I was completely wrong n the OS.
I'm going FROM Windows XP To Windows 7, with a new 19" wide-screen monitor...
Sure hope the screen doesn't get messed up again...
http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/1280097/
Everything had been ok until I came across this old thread. Is it because it's old? Because the word September" is too long? I'm going to try to take a screenshot Brb!
Well, I'll have to figure that out later because the page I opened looks like this:
http://davesgarden.com/
I'm sure I can find instructions for the screenshot. Don't worry about me.

Hmmmph, I closed that one window that kept getting messed up, and everything is back to the new normal. Please proceed. I didn't figure out how to do a screenshot, but I suspect if I cleaned off some of my buttons I would see that it's F9 or something.
It is because September is too long, and for whatever reason, that line of text doesn't wrap like most do/should.
I'd like to know how other people do a screenshot. I have been told to hit "print screen." Nothing seems to happen. But then go to another program (like Word), and right click and hit "paste" (or control-v) -- that works. But I haven't tried to upload that to DG.
Not sure if this worked as a screen shot below. Terry, could you please help on my question above? Thanks :)
Connie
Doesn't show the vertical tabs that are blocking other info. so I deleted it. Hey, I tried lol

Connie, the header issue seems to be isolated to a few users in I.E.10 and not for everyone. We are looking at it, but kind of scratching our heads, since it isn't readily apparent why it's happening for a few, but not most. (I can get the header out-of-whack by upping my zoom, but not completely vertical as you have).
Connie, after resisting the notion for a long time I finally downloaded Chrome (the Google equivalent of Internet Explorer). This was after I discovered that one site after another wouldn't work with I.E. 10. I couldn't believe that Microsoft wouldn't be more careful about breaking running applications. But they weren't. They drove me to download Chrome. I still like I.E. better, couldn't explain exactly why, but I do have to use Chrome for at least 3 sites. Fortunately I.E. works fine for me with Dave's Garden. But if your problem doesn't affect most people, you might need to try a different browser like Chrome or Firefox.

HAPPY TO REPORT, that the installation of my NEW computer and monitor works perfectly (so far) with the new setup.
.Windows 7 OS, 19" wide-screen monitor, Google Chrome (for Dave's Garden).
Linda
My laptop is windows 7 but this "new" issue as just started less than a week ago so I am still scratching my head as to why it popped up. Now I still have and have had all of the other issues everyone else is mentioning. Thanks so much for the suggestions and I will try the Chrome to see if that will help. I am kinda like you Las, resisting as long as I could get by without it (grin). Are you experiencing any other issues or are you running good on Chrome?
Linda, so glad your new set up is running good for you :) Hoping mine will too lol.
Connie
I am still refusing to use G. Chrome as my default but running DG through it seems to work. My vertical tabs are now horizontal and I can read some of my d-mails and members posts so THANKS for pointing it out to me (big grin)
Connie
I noticed that my "LOCATION" line in my preferences (under my Avatar) was crossing the line into the text box, so I shortened the line (took out "Hobby"), and now it's not running over...
Connie, I don't have to use Chrome for DG. Just lucky, I guess. I rarely use it at all. Just for those 3 web sites. I don't have any remaining issues with DG and I.E. 10 except for the date bleeding over the right hand margin. But that is so miniscule it's not a bother. Oh, yes. The list of forums in some search environments are all in a line, no indentations, so don't look categorized. Terry says she sees it in I.E. 10, but not in other browsers. But that's not enough of a problem for me to switch browsers now that I've learned I just have to start typing the name of the forum.

my dates on the threads are running over into the reply
box even on this thread, and I have not changed anything
It's a mess. Everybody has something not working right.
When I want to choose a picture and click on it a sign comes up that says "No file chosen". Is it just my quirk?
CountryGardens, dude ... seriously.
Success! I shut down the computer and when I turned it back on the "choose a file" worked. Sorry to have bothered you, Terry, but I wish all the fixes were that easy!
Pirl, I wish for that, too :-)
I bet!

terry, this is still a problem for me in firefox ( 2) on Mac OS10.4
the date on each post is to large, everything else is to small
Seems like that should be a simple fix????
Now if they could change the size of the date with post size it would be perfect. I don't see any reason why the date is printed so large and the posts aren't.
Need to add that it wouldn't have to be quite that bold. But I do think those with eye problems could see it just fine then. Maybe something to think about?
