Size of text area, social media space and cut-off posts

Kalama, WA(Zone 8b)

Date and time are spilling out into the post and I'm on Firefox.

Murfreesboro, TN(Zone 7a)

Joy, do you have your browser set to something larger than 16 point? (That's what I have mine set in Firefox, and I don't have the spillover problem, so that's my point of reference.)

Kalama, WA(Zone 8b)

I probably do. But I wouldn't be able to read the tiny print here if I didn't. It doesn't cause any problems on any other site I visit, only here. That's a problem.

Ottawa, KS(Zone 5b)

Hi Terry,

That last response pretty much says it all. "It doesn't cause any problems on any other site I visit, only here."

The social media icons definitely need to be moved to the header(small icons), or a tab that doesn't interfere with the positioning of the forum. BUT, subscribers are having that wasted space because that's the ad space for non-subscribers. Honestly, that doesn't make sense. Subscribers and non-subscribers shouldn't be on the same code. A code that differentiates between the two is needed.

I understand the need for ads (newcomers, freeloaders). But for those that pay, there really shouldn't be a disconcerting compromise. I like that DG is finally upgrading, I also understand that it's one helluva job to undertake. DG was so antiquated a few years back. Was happy to see the 5 image integrated last year. Much needed. Now I'm happy to see it's attempting to become current. But not to the point of upsetting the community.

A lot of small steps will eventually catch up. Big jumps always lead to major problems....and major $$$$.

Ray is right!!

Richland, WA(Zone 7b)

Amen to that! Still waiting for the social network thing to GO AWAY!

Cedarhome, WA(Zone 8b)

Jo and others, I get the distinct impression the social network thing is here to stay. But hope is good...

The zone information is overwriting the dialogue box on some threads.

Kalama, WA(Zone 8b)

When I set my browser to a font size that makes reading on this website more comfortable, it's too large for other sites. Does it really make sense that we have to adjust our computers just to be able to use this site?

I've been a member of DG sense it's beginning. Member input and suggestions are what built this site to begin with. Now the members don't matter. What a shame. Just glad there's more options online now then there were back in the days DG started.

Northeast, WA(Zone 5a)

Well, for some reason some of my posts don't appear. Oh well, they know how I feel about it anyway. It was to you Bonehead. Maybe I sent it D-mail.

I also noticed that the time…AM/PM is also running over into dialogue box as well.

Northeast, WA(Zone 5a)

tim, I am no expert, but if you are using a computer, vs smartphone, ipad, etc., and have Firefox, I can send you a solution to that that someone sent me and it worked. If not, can't help you.

I am on IPAD. This problem occurred at the get go with the first wave of change. Seems we all had it regardless of the system. The advice was to clear cache / history. I did that and it fixed it. Then as the days progressed and more folks weighed in with various problems and the techs ( I assume) made changes to accommodate or correct ---the problem reared its head again. So.... I went back and cleared the history again just like I did before but this time no correction ensued. It appears to be a line length problem.

Murfreesboro, TN(Zone 7a)

It is - I think - a problem caused by at least three different things:

1. We are now working within the confines of a fixed-width text area, as opposed to a text area that stretched as wide as your screen (and occasionally beyond even that, which was also a problem :-).

2. Some folks need a significantly enlarged font, for a variety of reasons: the device you're using, the age of the device/resolution of the screen, and/or sight issues.

3. Some seemingly random aspects of DG's text, such as the username and date/time fonts within the sidebar column, are affected in odd ways by different browser and browser font/zoom settings.

We will get things right but it may take us a bit to track down all the stray bits of code that are causing these problems. And depending on your browser and settings, some of these problems may resolve and then reappear while we complete our work.

I wish I could tell you that we could make it all better with a fa switch, but it is a trial-and-error thing. We will continue to test the fixes and changes on a staging area, but when we roll them out, we may still find some browsers react in ways we weren't able to anticipate.

Terry ~ Thank You, Thank You, Thank You...all of you guys that are working so hard on this!!!

I can't think of a single other website I've ever used where members get to have so much interaction with admin. (or any at all, for that matter), even when things go wrong technically...usually it's, "my way or the highway"...or wait about 3 weeks for an email.

I know not everyone feels that way right now because they're frustrated, but a lot of us do. Once everything gets fixed, I think the rest of us will come around.

Richland, WA(Zone 7b)

I just tried to upload 2 photos to a post and they failed- what else is going to go wrong? I have never had a problem before. A window pops up that says "undefined".

Jacksonville, FL(Zone 9a)

I've been on several forums and have heard the same problem…Site wide apparently.

I realize that you all(admin) are working hard to address these problems…

It is quite frustrating! For us, and I'm sure for you as well! :-|

Murfreesboro, TN(Zone 7a)

Yep...I got the same message. I shot an email to our lead tech, but I don't know if she's see it in time to do much this weekend. I am so sorry.

Cedarhome, WA(Zone 8b)

Nuts, I admire your optimism.

Algonquin, IL(Zone 5a)

Terry, it's not happening with all photos, for some reason. I tried to upload one that got that same message, but I was able to upload 8 others that were fine. After the others, I tried again, but it still wouldn't upload.

Northeast, WA(Zone 5a)

For one thing, I think the problem is that when we all send in a problem they try to fix each one, and it screws up the rest. Can't do that. Need to fix each area and let each person adjust their computer and see if they can get it to work with what you have.

Terry, have the techs thought about getting a different program? I am sure there are some out there that can do a better job than this one.

Oh well, don't bother, I know the answer I will get.

Lewisville, MN(Zone 4a)

You can go hundreds of sites a day & not "adjust" your computer.
Why here ??

Deep East Texas, TX(Zone 8a)

Everybody please when you post, skip the fourth line so I can read your posts.

It is difficult at best to read through the bold overlapping print of the Date/Time stamp.

Thanks from me...

Rosemont, ON(Zone 4a)

Still waiting for the print size to go back to "normal" in Posts... I hope this hasn't been put on the back burner now that the overlapping Date/Time problem is to the fore.

The problem seems to be they have no way of knowing when an "area is fixed", when they put out what they think is fixed, it falls apart. Yes, maybe a new program is needed.

Algonquin, IL(Zone 5a)

BirdFiles is working again...YAY!!

Thanks!

Algonquin, IL(Zone 5a)

Just an FYI...I guess you can now add the Upper Midwest Gardening forum to the list of forums with the Date & Time cut off. It's on the list of threads, not on the actual threads.

Edited to say: "Oops, forgot to add the link"
(I can capture a screen shot, but so far have been unable to find a program on my older computer that will allow me to open & transfer it).

I think the root of all these problems is faulty software design. Like, take for instance, the original decision to let you set your font size in the forum Preferences. That design decision was made knowing that browsers also let you set your font size. That is like having a car with two steering wheels and two different drivers. Conflicts and problems would be inevitable. I feel sorry for Terry. I am pretty sure they aren't paying her enough.

Nuts - most computers come with a program called "Paint" - think it will work with screen shots.

I've never tried this ^_^

Evelyn, you can use your browser to "zoom in" on the page. You may have to scroll horizontally (left-right) if you zoom it beyond 100%.

Yes, Terry...I can "zoom in"...or go to "VIEW" at the top of my browser, then go to "Style", then select "NO STYLE"

At that point, I do not have to zoom and the message boxes displays nicely across the screen. Unfortunately, it is not permanent and has to be set every time you go to another forum or after a message is posted.

I just wish that DG could set the message boxes to view just like that (and the font is readable, with all the "dates" in their places...) in a permanent way. If that occured, all our whining would go away in an instant!! ^_^

Enterprise, AL(Zone 8b)

Yes, it does that on my computer also. It seems pictures are able to be posted again now.

Algonquin, IL(Zone 5a)

Honeybee...Thanks.
I know several people say it's what they use, but so far I haven't located it in the list of programs. I tried using several other programs, including a photo program. All of them show the screen shot but don't allow me to open and transfer it.

I did (possibly) locate "paint" by using "help", but not sure it's even the same thing. I'm persistant, though, so I'll keep playing around with it.

By-the-way, Happy Birthday (late)!!! Hope you had a great day!

Northeast, WA(Zone 5a)

nuts and seedfork, don't be too elated. They work until the next problem is fixed. Seems then all the previous fixes mess up. Take a big deep breath and count to 10.

Algonquin, IL(Zone 5a)

Okay everybody here goes...with Seedfork's generous help I now feel so extremely enlightened!!

Ta-Da!

My very first SCREEN SHOT! (hey, I'm excited)
This is the Upper Midwest forum's list of threads. The cut-off Date & Time is probably similar to what others have mentioned about assorted forums. I believe this is new with this forum.

(I hope it works, I hope it works)

YES!!

Edited to say: Even though it didn't capture the whole page and it makes it look like it can be scrolled, in acuality the right side is cut off and can't be scrolled. This is the only forum that has done this for me.

I must scroll to see the right side.

CG ~ Have you tried going to "VIEW" at the top of your browser (if it has that feature), and then selecting "STYLE", then clicking on :No Style"? Does that work for you?
