NIGHT OWLS ONLY - OPEN 12:00 a.m. to 6:00 a.m. EST

Greensboro, NC(Zone 7b)

Hello Ju!

what state is your mind in (IN)?

Anderson, IN(Zone 6a)

Hi Amanda ... ? Mindlessness .... not Bliss , more like Nirvana ^_^

Hillsborough, NC(Zone 7b)

Good morning All
It's been roasting here -what mild temps? We had real washer tonight. Not too noisy with it.

Amanda is I asking about Ju's state of mind --- she is hoping for a good nighttime puzzle. Sometimes I scratch my head and say 'huh?' But can't inquire because it is past 6 am. But then the following night I get it --- so it must be a 'read only at night' sort of thing assisted by sleep deprivation. I went to bed at 12:30 -but up at 2:20 -- and that was even with near awakenings prior to that. Not good. That is way too much sleep under the belt for the likes of me to just roll over. Sigh. Double sigh. If I were with Ju at least I could watch the possums. Here, I have to be quiet. Shhhhhhhhh. A drag.

Supper - how about a meatloaf? Make a batch up and freeze 2.
Grill salmon
Cook up a batch of corn on the cob (perfect now) and shuck and freeze individual portions in baggies.
Saute up a batch of potatoes, onions, and mushrooms and make a frittata - top with fresh chopped tomato
Avocado and shrimp
You a vegetarian?

Morning --
I was going to rant about a neighbor and the way they treat their beautiful boxer but I don't have the heart this morning. I'll rant about UPS instead. Now why, pray tell, when they deliver late in the evening and especially after dark (which is not uncommon) can't they go to the front door, leave the package and ring the doorbell??? But nooooo, they have to leave it on the side deck where I don't usually have a light on. I've managed to snag them most of them before they got soggy, but it makes me grumpy when I find them the next morning like I just did a little while ago.

I'm no help with menus as I seldom cook in the heat of summer. Although there hasn't been a lot of "heat" so far this year. I am, however, the goofball who's drinking coffee at the moment. I'm big on cooking in a crockpot. Easy and delicious. And if you forget it, no problem with burning the meal. Let's see, yesterday was bbq with Jack Daniels sauce, butter lettuce salad, fresh sugar snap peas, fresh tomatoes, and someone gave me some fresh squash from their garden. Now, to me, that's a feast.

Carry on, ya'll ...
Carole

Hillsborough, NC(Zone 7b)

Hello All
Well tonight was Mexican. We have the good fortune of living close to the restaurant chosen multiple years as best Mexican in Triangle (Raleigh, Durham,Chapel Hill) it is a hole in the wall - I think it was a gas station at one time. Must have 8 tables. Last night we had fresh corn, baked sweet potato (whipped) breaded pork cutlets (cut from a pork loin and hammered - less expensive) and mixed green salad. A little heavy on the carbs.

Carole, I hate that you are up front and close to animal abuse. It is heartbreaking and I always come back to WHY do these "creatures" own animals?? Why?

Our UPS leaves on the screened porch or front porch - covered. There is no place else and so doesn't require conscious thought!! That is the trick! Years ago I had a large lidded rubber container - the kind bench cushions might be stored in - with a laminated note on it saying place packages inside. There were times packages left on top! Go figure.

Greensboro, NC(Zone 7b)

Mmmmm! Making me hungry. Yes Rosie, was a vegetarian/borderline vegan for ten years. Then I began to wonder about certain ails and links to poor nutrition. I didn't have a doctor tell me to do so, but I Have felt better physically since I began adding some fish back into my diet. No and then some ckn, once in a great while some beef, but never never pork. My mom made TH best baked pork chops on the planet an I was a carnivore! But I have grown too fond of th pink ones to eat.

WE had French toast!!! Inspired by the silly book I am reading about heat flushes and such. It was delish! Love breakfast for dinner.

Got a cat with one eye staring at me, and I can't tell now if the noise in Snoopy's belly is hunger or upset stomach. The former I hope!

Feel good and tired. I did a lot today so I hope sleep comes soon.

Who's up? Will check in again later to see what's shaking. ;)

NE, SD(Zone 4b)

Well, I am back. Ugh. I need a job where I work these early hours and sleep during the day. But then I would not be able to spend all day digging in flowerbeds.

On the menu.......the night before were ribs in the crockpot. Mo mess, no fuss. So easy. BLTs tonight with fresh picked tomatoes. So good. I do not have a garden but do grow five tomato plants in Earth boxes. Love these boxes for I don't have to dig up the yard but can have fresh veggies. Also no weeds. Easy watering.

The neighbor dog, Jake, occasionally helps me in the yard. The only problem I never know when he is on his way o visit. He is an energetic, lovable Lab. I sometimes do not see or hear him so it startles me when he shows. Tonight his appearance occurred while I was moving the water sprinkler. Sprinkler in hand. He startled me and I ended up spraying myself. He still got his many pets and treat.

Well ... I think I will try this thing that is called "sleep". Good night to some and good morning to others.

Good morning rockette. :)

This is my second wind. Or something. The dog woke me so I took her for a little stroll. Sure wish she could talk about now and tell me how she feels, if she hurts and where... guess that's what blood tests are for. Ack!

You are all making me hungry for fresh vegetables! I'm more a flower gardener though we do start off every year with tomatoes an cucumbers and greens and beans... they haven't done so well again this year. I guess I just need to pull in more effort at ensuring success.

Rosie, it's been mild here. I know it's a bit warmer there but It's been delightful... highs this past week in the low 80s 80s and overnight even into the 60s. Not at all seasonal, but I love it. Some days it felt more like September to me than it did July.

Well have a cat on me now it's hard to type. Going tonight this a rest and try to get some more myself. Good morning Carole and folks just getting up to stay up. Will talk to you later. ;)

Greensboro, NC(Zone 7b)

A pretty bloom from today/ yesterday. Only doctored a little bit due to poor lighting. ;)

Morning Amanda and all -- No sign of the boxer next door. I've already had to call Animal Control once. I do hope she's okay. The last time I gave her a dog treat she scarfed it down so fast that I ended up giving her three or four more out of concern she hadn't eaten that day. They have previously gone off for a long weekend and left her without food or water. So I've taken some over there, even if it was cat food.

Enough of that. I was mostly vegetarian at one time, just some eggs and a little fish in addition. Occasionally chicken for the Hubbs. I do eat more meat now but not an inordinate amount. I can get good natural, free-roaming beef at our FM but still don't eat a lot of it.

Beautiful bloom, Amanda. I got so excited when my Surprise Lily, true to its name, surprised me for the first time here this year.

A pic of sweet doggie next door ... and the lily.

Well, snap, can't get photos to upload to DG. Back later for that maybe.

Oy.

Trying to remember that uncle Bob but drawing blank. No real thought occurring right now. Sure miss my REM sleep, but Snoopy seems well. Just came in from out. A beautiful, mild evening.

Wazzup in IN?

Ms Rosie, the sleep compatibility...separate beds a practical solution. Too tired to go to the kitchen and start banging pots together. I have counted sheep before in desperation, an interesting exercise.

Who's up? Just me and Ju. ;)

Guess Whooo, Whooooo is here! It looks like I slept in this morning. I didn't hear the chatter.

Started to organize pictures of flowers so during the winter when I get the itch to plan and order for the spring I remember what and where they are planted.
Starting with lilies. I need to divide and thin them.

Amanda, what is the name of your bird in your avatar. Pretty. Also name of purple flower you posted.

Well, let me see..............I just got out of the shower. Previous to that I put my whole pork loin pieces in the food processor and chopped it up for BBQ. Put it in a ziplock bag and it's in the fridge as I type. Tomorrow morning I'll mix in the BBQ sauce and put it back in the roaster. Family reunion tomorrow at our place. We'll have it up in our farm shop. The men will like seeing the tractor with a back wheel off, the drag race car that is a work in progress, and all the "stuff" that fuels the testosterone level in the humans with the "Y" chromosome. The SU and oldest DS washed the floor down this afternoon. Have a bunch of chairs up there, 2 picnic tables, and assorted foodstuffs. Buns, chips, soda, etc.

Will make a 5 gallon Igloo cooler with ice water. The food will go on the shop bench and welding supplies table on which I have spread sheets as tablecloths. It's what we do when we have our neighborhood fireworks parties. (Oldest DS works for a pyrotechnic guy in the summer.) The SU and I have taken the safety class which now authorizes us to be able to wire shells and otherwise handle the fireworks when setting up for a show. Anyway, I digress...........

The SU and I had a 2 1/2 day milking job that ended this morning (5 milkings). After we got home I decided I might as well start mowing the yard so at least I could get that out of the way and have the rest of the day to do piddly stuff. I was out there 2 hours, and still had a little to do, but the SU was feeling kind and finished the last 20 minutes or so for me. WE have 2 mowers and he usually mows too but said that he probably wouldn't be able to help much due to getting the shop cleaned up.

So much easier to have it up there..........lots of room, and if the flies and bugs get overwhelming, we can shut the big overhead door and at least be out of it.

If I had half a brain I'd go to bed, but I suppose I should wash up the food processor and all the assorted stuff that went along with that job. :>)

NE, SD(Zone 4b)

Wide awake due to thunderstorms that rolled through. we have not had rain for three weeks so the rain is welcomed. crops ( and the lawn and gardens) in need of the moisture.
Anna_Z, how was the reunion?
The thread has been quiet . . . which is a good sign. I am off to see what book I can find to put me back to sleep.

Greensboro, NC(Zone 7b)

Good morning rockette and all you night owls!

I hope Anna is getting some sleep. Family stuff wears ya out, but then again most of my peeps are gone. Weird, if I got together with family it would just be me an one or two of my brothers, the third being too pissed off or something to partake. Didn't know we had anything to fight over when mom died, but that's about the gist of it.

In fact, it's a relief, not having that kind of stress around the holidays. Court's family is mostly in Virginia,an he has only just begun to experience losing family. I guess because his granny and his momma both had their kids while they were pretty young. We don't travel together for holidays, overnight affairs really, because of the critters.

Cats and dogs are easy enough to leave behind if you have someone very dependable. It difficult to trust that everything necessary Will be done for the exotics or aquatics. We Hav even hired "professionals" in the very distant past, with instructions written down with nauseating detail, to come home and find things screwed up.

Rita, our green iguana, is the one now w/o requires the most attention to detail. Very specific heat and humidity and feeding requirements. If anyone bothered to research the actual needs of these animals in captivity they would never have them. I mean, if they were being responsible and honest with themselves. By who is like that?! Ha!

Rita is a pet store rescue. All of our critters are rescues. Hell, even the dang giant Oscar fish in the 55 gallon tank is a rescue. AND that 55 gallon tank is actually too small for him, although it is recommended that that is the very minimum amount of water that a fish like this needs.

How did I get here, harping about fish?!

Isn't that what happens to everybody in the middle of the night when you can't sleep? I'll find myself thinking, " how did i get here," thinking about such and such.

Well snoopy is protesting the light so I will put the tablet away.

So you know I am still experimenting in the kitchen. Last night I made chicken. With hot madras curry sauce, mashed sweet potatoes with garlic, and steamed spinach. I don't plan these meals, they just happen as I'm going along. Sent a plate to the disabled guy next door. Hope I didn't make him sick. Haha! :)

Below, the datura that is eating the driveway. Court counted 88 blooms open or about to open overnight. I dead head the spent flowers and seed pods because it's so invasive. I think that's why it is so prolific.

It's 12 o'clock somewhere!!...........I am using a different computer and can't post pictures without assistance. My assistant says he is not staying up until midnight so here I am!

Finally received rain last night! Last of the many lilies. A cool, windy evening tonight....good sleeping weather.

OMG Amanda, the number of Datura blooms...lucky you. I tried growing one for three years with no success.

What kind of fish is Oscar? You must post a picture.

Hope Snoopy is feeling better.

G'nite all.

RE: getting someone to care for the felines.........I'm going to be gone for 2 1/2 weeks (well, the SU is too.......LOL). Our oldest son will be gone too the first week we are, and I can't depend on DS#2 to feed and clean the kitty restrooms. So, I asked a friend if she would come by and do the housecats and feed the barn cats. It's only once a day, in the evening. I fed her 2 cats and 3 fish for 4 days last fall but I had to go twice a day. She's only 3 miles away. After the oldest kid gets home his GF will do it, I guess.

My next-yard neighbor will water all my plants when I'm gone. For doing watering duty, she gets to keep her plants in my g'house in the winter for free. I also get her to water when we take our November trip to Mexico. She likes coming down to the greenhouse, so it's no problem.

I suppose I should think about sliding between the sheets. Didn't do my workout this morning (call me lazy) and I NEED to take my bike ride too. I'll never get in shape if I sit on my ass.

Here's hoping I don't check in about 3 am. :>)

Anderson, IN(Zone 6a)

OKAY so it's 3;15 about , I was going to sing schools out ,, but that was pm, not am . good morning Boys and Girls ..
Anyone remember that one,,lol

Monroe, WI(Zone 4b)

It is 2:35 by my atomic clock. Blech!!! Been awake for a half hour.

Monroe, WI(Zone 4b)

4 am and still awake.

Greensboro, NC(Zone 7b)

Wheeee! Lookit me! Had to have slept 4.5 hours straight!

We didn't give the dog fluids yesterday, just giving her a break. All bodes well.

Now, to go back to sleep, or not to sleep. That is a tough question.

Rockette, thanks for checking in. It was probably 12 o'clock somewhere. Love your lilies. Thanks for the pictures.

Anna, sounds like you've got a good network to back you up when you travel. Wonder why is it that some boys can't be counted on (from a girl with four brothers).

Ha! Today is a brother's birthday. There's high math involved . . .he wouldn't let me voice it on the phone last night so i didn't bother. But I think he's 57. Neither of us married or had children. So we share some goofy qualities. I sent him a monarch butterfly in a jar, fake of course, that flutters when you touch the jar. kinda kreepy, but a very neat toy. :)

Good morning Ju and Carole and sarv and Anna and rockette and....Rosie, missing you.

Clarksville, TN(Zone 7a)

Looking in and waving at ya'll. Oops, I'm 5 minutes over the deadline. See you later.

Hillsborough, NC(Zone 7b)

I have been FORCING myself to bed - and has been prior to midnight. Then last night I was up and wide awake on an ancestry site --damn!! Grandfather's name is Ignazio and NOT Dominick. Wow....how'd I miss that?? At least grandmothers -- Carmela and Marguerite Chiara didn't have an alias! Anyway went to sleep at 4:30 am !! Time flew! Now it is 8:16 pm and, I figured I'd say hello now.....save it.....and post it to the thread at stroke of midnight! Then I GOT to go to sleep. I am starting to look like my mother and girls ------ that ain't for the faint of heart. Wrinkles muriatic acid would not smooth.

Well it is 12:03 and good to go. Then to shower and hopefully to bed. Trying to get a hold of 'The Bride' gaura. I have a perfect sunny spot that needs a few floating butterflies. Then I am going to plan a Zen garden near the water feature -- after I get a stump ground down. What do I use to rake pebbles?? A regular rake? Well, off I go. Wishing you all sweet dreams or--- productive awakenings.

Sierra Foothills, CA(Zone 8a)

Amanda ~ Glad Snoopy is better. Hope you get some sleep tonight. Ahh...sleep, perchance to dream. Happy dreams...

Brooksville, FL(Zone 9a)

Just checking in on DG and found this thread, didn't know there were so many others that are night owls.

I just finished my second batch of soap for the day and have to make myself head to bed as tomorrow I've got to go help a friend pack as she is moving back up north. We went out to dinner tonight for the last time, I cried all the way home...

I'll come back tomorrow and get caught up on all the postings.

Great idea for a thread...LOL

Janet

Greensboro, NC(Zone 7b)

Hi Janet. :)

glad we could make you laugh a little. Do come back.

Rosie - I didn't know anyone up north who did genealogy. Every one in the south seems to know where they came from. Someone in my daddy's family actually wrote and published a hard cover book about our family here in NC. I love it. If I had known she was publishing a book I would have been more diligent about returning the questionnaire she'd sent me when I was in college. Haha.

Where's ju? Dont tell me he fell asleep.

Hiya Evelyn! I have been thinking of you. My sleep schedule is way off. I'd better close this down, but it's true, the dog is much improved. We continue to give her subQ fluids to flush the kidneys. Have to make an appt with the new vet for the next blood tests to see where we are.

Keep you posted. Good morning everybody!!! :)

Carole? What is thAt flower you have on your avatars now?

Which reminds me, so.some asked about the bird in mine. It is a blue crown conure, he took pArt of my heArt with him a couple of years ago.

And the flower I posted above was the native passionower (Passiflora incarnata).

Yes, it's good to hear that Snoopy is better.

Good morning to Rosie, Evelyn, Ju, Anna, and anyone I've missed. I know better than to start naming names. I always forget one or two.
