NIGHT OWLS ONLY - OPEN 12:00 a.m. to 6:00 a.m. EST

Monroe, WI(Zone 4b)

My, unfortunately. And it's gonna be a L O N G day on Sat.......... Which will commence at 4 am CST. *sigh* I hate it when this happens. I would have taken something, but didn't really want to as I felt sleepy. What's a person to do?

Anderson, IN(Zone 6a)

I am always up .. trying to beat the sleep virus . insomnia , sleeplessness is all propaganda ,, doesn't exist , neither does a pill cure ..
Having a cup of coffee chasing raccoons out of the kitchen ,,, routine wild stuff you know ...

Clarksville, TN(Zone 7a)

I'm up, Amanda. To answer Anna's query, I guess we come here and vent. Morning all.

Anderson, IN(Zone 6a)

I got bored or exited I don't know which , so I started some plants from seeds and cuttings about midnight , wild times next door for a few hours ,
I am entertaining myself with the plants . not much to partyville anymore .. more like homeville or gardenville ..
The (or a) raccoon snuck up on me in the kitchen earlier tonight , I hate that when they do that , from the corner of your eye they look like the cats .. fooled me ,, fooled you , fooled them

Ohhh a bunch of silent sufferers are we.

Anna I guess you'll be the first one ready for your long day. The irony for me is that I will spend a whole night not being able to sleep, and then at the crack of dawn I will find it. Arrgghhhh! And then the alarm goes off. It's maddening.

Ju, are you really drinking coffee? You're a mad man! But I like it.

Carole, he should have joined us in the mug swap. Whoops! That reminds me of something I have to do later this morning!

In the birthday thread I just recounted the critter woes that have kept me distracted this year. Are you all aware that vertical tube feeders communicate disease in house finches?

This is the DG CSA.

Ju, is that your TX star hibiscus? It's lovely. Mine have developed buds but no yet bloomed. Can't remember but I think this is only the second year from seed, so they are not so well established. I need to water one or two of them regularly as the roots are not so well developed.

Clarksville, TN(Zone 7a)

Speaking of coffee, I now have enough coffee filters to supply the world. Our WM stopped stocking unbleached filters so I ordered some. I thought I was getting 2 packages but ended up with 8. So now I have have a bag of 1600 unbleached coffee filters. That should last for awhile ... like several years. lol.

I haven't planted my Texas Star seeds. It's a handsome bloom and plant. I have several other hardy hibs. Someone gave me a cutting that I rooted and it is preparing to bloom for the first time. I have no idea what it will be. Something different from what I have, I hope.

Greensboro, NC(Zone 7b)

Lordy, them's a lot of filters. Still here, got distracted reading. Cat and dog both asleep. Will be glad to have my bed back. ;)

Clarksville, TN(Zone 7a)

I'll line pots and things with some of them thar filters. Who knows ... maybe I'll develop coffee filter art. It has probably already been done though.

Uh ... yep ...

All smiles here. "Mint coffee ecru"??? YeR killin' me. :)

No news here. Spent my free evening hours exploring the online offerings of the NC public libraries. There are resources available here that I don't have access thru the university. It's pretty amazing, though as with many web resources, I can't access some things because the kindle doesn't have Adobe flash player or the proper reader. Format issues... used to be the only format/operating systems we had to cope with were Windows and Macintosh. Thank goodness for competition (and for those of you who don't recognize it, that was sarcasm).

That's a Big Red an older version of Fireball , hardy Hibiscus . Big blooms .. Well upward and onward ,, another time to face another day .. like back to my corner to take a nap.

Squeezing in one last post before the time is up. I really am trying to color between the lines here. I frequently fail at that.

Nice, ju. I like Fireball and that Big Red.

This is 'Luna Pink Swirl'.

G'day, ya'll. I have to grocery shop this morning. Ugh!

Thumbnail by Cville_Gardener
Greensboro, NC(Zone 7b)

Hey Cville, how was your shopping trip?

I let my other half do all the running today as I was preoccupied here at home.

Snoopy and I are sleeping on th loveseat in the den off the kitchen and I just put up another babygate across the kitchen doorway to deter one of the senior cats from coming in here and messing with us. In the past I have successfully created an impenetrable wall there in the doorway with three gates. It's a drag if you have to move to and fro,but very effective at keeping cats/dogs separated. Pity is baby gates have a short half life here considering the paces we put them thru, and I am currently one short for that tactical maneuver.

Snoop has had some sort of relapse so I am hovering. I thought about taking something to help me sleep, but then I wouldn't be available if she needed me. Crazy, ain't I though?! That's okay. I've been called worse.

It was unseasonably mild and pleasant today. I got a little weeding done and even started some seeds despite the lateness of the season. I think last summer I put some sunflowers in late in August. Something optimistic about seeing the "days to bloom" will occur well before the first frost. :)

Who's up?

mulege, Mexico

Hi Everyone, Almost 2am and I'm awake after a short "nap." My stomach hurts just enough to keep me awake. Amanda, sorry to hear of Snoopy's relapse. All four of mine are OK and I'm so grateful. We spend a lot of this time of year in the bedroom with the A/C on; also a dehumidifier. The air is not only hot (90's if we're lucky) but very humid and I hate gasping for air.

Tony was here today as usual and did another tire filled with stones for a path in the new garden. Like Topsy, who "just grew," this garden is just growing as we have the time and energy to work on it. There are tires filled with amended soil for plants and rock filled tires for paths. Planned as we go so all plants can be reached from a path.

We went to town and did grocery shopping. My friend Saul who has a small grocery store has just returned from a shopping trip north so I stocked up on necessities like mixed nuts and whipping cream. They are only available right after he has made a trip. We also went to the small grocery store of friends Manuel and Araly and got fresh orange juice (made on a juicer I gave them a couple of Christmases ago), and mangoes from their orchard. Manuel speaks quite a bit of English and we talk gardening a lot.

I watched the last part of "My favorite Year" a movie I really like. I was watching "Diner" when I fell asleep.

I've been spending a lot of time at Pinterest. With this hot, dry weather we has few mosquitoes but lots of ants and the usual cockroaches.

Came in in the top 5% of my weekly poker tournament; Out of 1500 people that's better than I usually do but not good enough to win any money.

Dr. Oz says sour cherry juice will help one to sleep. I have some concentrate but It's in the bottom of my little freezer. Turkey could also help, it has tryptophan, but I don't have any of that.

Enough babbling. Hope everyone is sleeping soundly and having peaceful dreams.

hugs, katie

Anderson, IN(Zone 6a)

OH it's 4;30 and someone is talking with me about things I know not of and care not of ,, good morning
Then i was on my way to that place ,and got yelled at ..
You know though this is one of those days i am just going to have to not care ..
Pooper-ville .. taking my leave now..

Clarksville, TN(Zone 7a)

Katie, I just noticed you are in Mexico. We used to go down sometimes when we lived in San Diego. I have several chicana friends there and did they ever cook excellent authentic Mexican food. Very different from the Americanized versions. Yum!

Amanda, I talked myself out of going to the grocery yesterday. So now I absolutely have to go today or we will be eating that box of baking soda that's been in the fridge for no telling how long. Either that or a can of sardines. Very good for you, sardines are, but DH isn't a fan. That little doggie of yours is getting such good care. You're a good doggie mama.

It is so cool here right now it's difficult to believe that August is only a few days away. We're in our hottest time of the year, but it ain't. :) I am not complaining. The most wonderful thing is the low humidity. Wowzers!

I slept like a log from 8 until just a short while ago. Don't know how to act. I must have something pithy to say but after feeding three cats and herding them out the door, I've forgotten what it might be.

Below is a shot of our resident groundhog "The General" in the yard. He spent a long time here yesterday.

And the butterflies on the Joe Pye Weed!!! It looked like a bush with wings. Lots of wings. There is a pair of Eastern Yellow Swallowtails, a male and a female, that are just beautiful. I've loved watching them cavort around that bush and the rest of the yard all summer. They are always together.

Got to go make mental preparation to grocery shop.

I keep missing the nightly post - don't ask me why because I am up. Like you Amanda I do my best sleeping right before time to get up. Sigh

Ju - did the possum actually get into the kitchen? By the way, This IPAD autocorrect wants your name to be "JUST" real bad! So, if you read it that way -- means I missed it.

C - I get the I bleached filters at Costco - not that you need to know now. Good idea about the pots - I have some on deck that run a little muddy.

I planed 3 Joe Pye ---3 !! And didn't make it. Not one. Just disappeared when I went to look for the plant - gone. Going to try again. If I can't grow it here in NC - time to hang up the UGGS.. UGGS are THE BEST BEST BEST gardening wear. NO snakes gonna get thru an UGG. Cool in summer and warm in fall. No water gets thru and feet cushioned and don't hurt. I spray with Cutters Outdoor because the boots are lined with sheep fur and I would not want misdirected ticks to believe there is a warm body at the base of the fur. It's brown and they'd be hidden real good too. So far so good - nary a bite to right under knee when I wear. I have reduced my million pair of 'gardening' shoes to one and stopped ruining my non gardening shoes for the mad 'only will run outside for a second' that lasts 3 hours) dash.

Amanda - For 2 years I have had THE KING of baby gates. Used 2 times maybe. Wooden and very wide. Saved it because I was going to paint it and use for trellis or 'something'. Finally 3 weeks ago gave it to son who was to take to Secret Closet Consignment. Do you want me to check to see if it actually made it there? He lives in Mebane so not that far.

Well, I am going to try to hit that pillow early. Didn't sit down more that 15 min once today - maybe I will get lucky. If not will check back. Storming now.

Greensboro, NC(Zone 7b)

Greets! Couldn't wait till midnight to come. Been watching videos on YouTube. I'm a Gleek and very saddened by the recent death of the show 's male lead. So I have a Maine coon cat laying on me with his face in mine, paws at my throat while I try to type with my thumbs on th tablet. Haha. Snoopy and I have spent the day together so she could convalesce, giving her SubQ fluids again. It was a nice day but didn't he much done. We had our now routine tstorms around 4 p.m.

Yawn.

Thought maybe about sleeping tonight but not yet sure how TH morning will progress.

Hiya, Rosie!

I just know that once I meet you, you won't be able to get rid of me. :D

If you have baby gates I will take them. Check with sonny. Like you I am collecting baby gates thinkin they will make somethin g great in th garden, but they just line the driveway, something to trip on.

Thumbs leave something to be desired on the kindle too. I can't repeat what MY tablet wants to call Ju. Heh.

Sounds like we had completely opposite days. I hope you can get some rest. Been meaning to ask about the yoga too. Hafta get this giant cat off me now, but 'll check back in. I did catch a nap this morning. What sleep schedule?!

As if . .....

Anderson, IN(Zone 6a)

Rosie , the Raccoons were back tonight I just got through chasing three of them away off the front porch ,
ans, Yes they had (one of them) pushed a loose door open and had been raiding the kitchen .. Big Rats !!!

Amanda ; it's okay .. your mad at me , I'm unfeeling , old , cold , rude , and unsympathetic , and you knew ,, Disses are Disses , we aren't going there though ... I comprehend , you don't feel well , and I don't seem to care .. it's a pity

Well wishing Rosie good luck with next go at Joe Pye Weed and I ain't just about anything ,,

Anderson, IN(Zone 6a)

I forgot it's not my fault that I type to slow and different than I am , and that I'm plain old ignorant all the time, and enjoying it all immensely that I am!!! ...lol ^_^

Oh Ju, how could I be mad at you? I am too busy playing nursemaid to senior cats and dogs. I even stopped following half a dozen threads here because I don't have the time for the distraction. Unlike you, it's not that I don't care. :p

I'm hoping to watch the inside of my eyelids for awhile. There's a thread in the wildlife forum that may entertain you. It should be near the top, called the "Heidi Chronicles." The member that started the thread is DreamofSpring. It's about the raccoons that she feeds in h e r yard. She's been posting about them for 6+ years. The matriarch, Heidi, stopped coming last year, we presume she died. Now one of her offspring or grandkids is back entertaining us all.

Snoopy and I evicted Willie the tabby from my bedroom to take it back. Going to introduce myself to a clean pillowcase and let you know how it turns out.

Can't sleep again...this is getting so old! Raining outside and I'm watching HGTV...maybe that will put me to sleep!

Greensboro, NC(Zone 7b)

:)

Anderson, IN(Zone 6a)

in just inder the wire , by a length , good morning , time check out the coffee and biscuits..lol

Sierra Foothills, CA(Zone 8a)

I'm not quite ready for coffee and biscuits...oh, that was this morning.

I didn't sleep last night, but did not turn my computer on...thinking I would sleep, but knew it wouldn't come. I think I dozed from 3 to 4 or something like that. Up at 6! Grrr...sometimes I can sleep in the morning, but not usually during the summer.

No rain here...watered all day...trimmed manzanita, took out the trash a day early since we will be gone tomorrow. Did laundry, changed sheets, dishes...fed the cat who is a stray...not our cat?? She comes by now almost every day and spends the day in my gardens after begging for more food. she isn't fat or pregnant...sometimes she doesn't come by for days. Maybe she just stores it up. Waddya' think, Amanda?

Anderson, IN(Zone 6a)

Yesterday morning now Evelyn , only my way of saying howdy " lol
Planted, dug , watching seed pods , wondering about next season ...My cats , well their being cats , want fed when they do , want attention when they do , want to do what they do when they want to,, Everyone and everything else , can ... well...... you know ,,,,, lol

Greensboro, NC(Zone 7b)

Good morning Evelyn and ju. :)

About cats : PITA
Sounds like your garden friend probably lives nearby and feeds from several different troughs after walking around the block Snoopy and I chased a PITA outofof the driveway. You know we have a bunny population in our wildlife preserve. just like spiders and hawks, cats (and dogs!) are not allowed in the yard.

I enjoyed my day. Didn't get a whole lot finished but felt better about the dog's health, by a slim margin. Tired though, I wonder who will sleep first? :D

Who else is up?

Anderson, IN(Zone 6a)

I don't know anything ,, I'm going back to bed ,, for the want of sleep???

Greensboro, NC(Zone 7b)

This is silly but .. . On the home page the featured article is titled " dog days of summer." So why do they have a picture of two cats?

Discuss among yourselves.

Hugs. Going back to see if sleep will come from where snoopy interrupted mine.

Clarksville, TN(Zone 7a)

Nice butterfly shot. I've got a yard full of them. There is one pair of Eastern Yellow Swallowtails that I've seen every day for a long time. They were the first ones here and all over the Joe Pye out back. They are always together as a pair. Very charming. The dragonflies are getting numerous too. Cicadas are singing their little hearts out. I guess it's more like chirping or some such. Not the 17 year cicadas - the ones that show up here every summer.

Cat lovers of the world unite.

Later.

Anderson, IN(Zone 6a)

I have been awake since 5;30 am yesterday .. time to go find my mind ..
Asters yellows destroying my garden Coneflowers only so far ..
7 hrs of contract sounds of business , time for me to hide now .. zzzzzzzzz

Greensboro, NC(Zone 7b)

Awake! Naturally.

It was an exciting day. I had my first heat flush. I started my research and began taking some homeopathic remedies which seemed to alleviate some dizziness I was experiencing.

I have treated all of my critters with homeopathy at one time or other, but beyond an occasional migraine, I'm fortunate to have my health.

I'm led to believe that my health would be better if I had more sleep.

Who's up?

Did you find it? Or get any sleep?

Yes, Amanda, sleep will cure a lot, and keep you young. I am getting old before my time. I wasn't expecting to get old until I was around 80 or so...but this "lack of sleep" is doing me in...

Anderson, IN(Zone 6a)

Evelyn , not yet ..lol
Beautiful night for getting a moon-tan .the moon-shine sun is shining bright
light rain too .

Greensboro, NC(Zone 7b)

Nice!

Ms snoopy let me sleep 4+ hours straight.

Of course, I'm less sure what that means for her. Made the mistake of letting one of the cats in here. She is the one that woke me up.

Good morning everybody! Hope you have a great day, and maybe even are getting some of that good sleep right before the alarm goes off. :D

See you tomorrow...

NE, SD(Zone 4b)

Oh my ... I didn't think there were other nite owls. I can't break this sleep pattern and then 5 am rolls around I have no trouble sleeping when I should be up getting ready to go to work.

I was looking at garden catalogs for fall bulbs. If I had them I would be out planting them.

Amanda, hope Snoopy is feeling better. I do not have pets (job required travel) but saw on my Walmart meds refill bottle it said they now carry pet meds. I guess Target pharmacies also carry pet meds.

Hope the thread stays quiet...it means everyone is getting a good night's rest.^_^

Greensboro, NC(Zone 7b)

Good morning. Carole, I missed you yesterday.

I enjoyed myself in the garden and with long slacks and a long sleeve blouse I hardly got chewed up at all.

I'm loving the mild temperatures this week, and it looks like they will stay for a little while.

We had rain this evening. I was beginning to forget.

Been busying myself also trying new things for dinner. I made rice pudding this evening and was very pleased with my first attempt. My grandmother loved rice pudding. As she aged, she would skip the menu completely when we went out to eat, and she always orderd dessert for dinner. She knew what she was doing!

Few days ago I made a pretty decent potato salad which I have never tried before. My mom was known for her potato and her macaroni salads. Weird tho' I never ate them. I didn't like all that mushed up together. I don't like fruit in my jello, you know?

Mine turned out pretty well too, though I sort of wondrr now what was in mom's dish. :)

Who's up? Gimme some supper ideas. I'm really a baker, so this cooking thing has come to me more slowly.

Anderson, IN(Zone 6a)

The Stage of state of mind is mindless !!!^_^

Greensboro, NC(Zone 7b)

Good morning rockette. :)

Some nights I catch a nap in th living room. Sometimes when I feel sleep coming I will just stay where I'm at... spent many hours overnight on the loveseat. :)

Tonight I'm just here in the middle. It's like intermission.

might get some more, snoopy had a good day. That could mean some good sleep overnight. I will be purchasing the fluids from the Mart, thanks. I haven't had to shop around for pet meds in a while, but I will keep that in mind. Only once not too long ago I needed something and I had to go to a compounding pharmAcy. Anything for the critters! I used to travel a lot for work, but had good backup at home.

Do you have plants instead? Or maybe kids. :D
