DG Has a New Look (con't)

Ottawa, ON(Zone 5a)

Haven't checked in here for quite awhile as Internet has been sporadic while travelling since OUR computer is not talking to wireless networks. Am back in the Air Canada Lounge in Vancouver airport and using IE again and still having the problem I had 10 days ago in that a drop-down menu is overlaying the entire page at the top. IE is not my browser of choice; so I don't know if it does that elsewhere.

BajaBlue, the site is optimized for the major browsers and versions used by PC and Mac users: Windows 8 and higher, Mozilla's Firefox, Chrome and - I believe - Safari for Mac. Other browsers and/or older versions may fight with the site now or in the future.

I thought I read the above carefully several times but I would like to have it clarified by Terry, please.

Terry,
Are you saying that from now on with these new changes, if we do not have " Windows 8 or higher we may fight with the site now or in the future"?

That means that anyone on DG with any other older Windows, i.e. Windows 7 for example, we could continue to have problems now and in the future? Am I correct?

Thank you in advance for your reply.

Enterprise, AL(Zone 8b)

This is just my opinion of that statement. Of course that has to be the case, it has been that way since computers developed. There is no way to continue to support old versions forever! The key in that statement is "in the future", even after DG has a totally new face from this new one, somewhere down the road those older versions will become outdated and cannot be supported. When you think about that I think you will understand her statement, it really has nothing to do with this new upgrade in particular, except that is part of the process in progression. I feel sure that people with older versions than yours will have more problems than you. The programs have to be written to support the latest versions now available and even look to the future, or they will cause problems even sooner.

Wrightstown, NJ(Zone 7a)

Thank you for your opinion Seed but I find it unusual that I have been a member here since 2007 and there were many changes in computers and programs during that time. In fact I had to upgrade my computer just this past year to keep up with all the new changes. Until this problem, DG survived many years of changes and we all survived along with them also. I have thought about her statement and because I am not exactly sure, I am asking Terry to explain. Not that I am stupid, just curious.

Northeast, WA(Zone 5a)

My 2 cents, if you have Firefox, Mozilla, Chrome, then you would be ok. No, I don't know if it is because we update constantly on FF. However, updating FF is not updating Windows, but maybe by updating FF, we are able to deal with the changes. Don't know, but that is the way I read that.

Enterprise, AL(Zone 8b)

I don't think any of the browsers right now can handle all the problems, I have IE10, and I think it handles all the things pretty well except where there is still programing errors, which I think the other browsers would also have problems with. But everything I use on a daily basis works pretty good right now, but that is not so for everyone I know. But I do agree that having the latest updates on your browser should help with this site and most others also.

Wrightstown, NJ(Zone 7a)

Jen, I agree, the browsers are important and I just assume everyone keeps them updated or upgraded whatever. When I read Windows 8 in there I was a bit taken back, wondering just what she meant and hopefully she will explain. I do know that Windows XP is almost non-existant as of a few months ago. No upgrades no nothing. That is one reason I had to upgrade my entire system so that I could keep up with everything else. I feel sure the entire program was outdated because we both have been here a long time and this is the first time there has been a problem like this that I can remember.

Wrightstown, NJ(Zone 7a)

Seed , I have no problems with anything except the size of the font, and I can adjust that on my own if I want to but it is such a waste of time. And, it happened suddenly just the other day. I had no problems, everything was working, I was centered, and was wondering why others were having so many problems. Then, bang, all of a sudden out of the blue my fonts changed and that is still my only problem. Figure that one out!!!!LOL

This link did not show up in the insert. I did not read it, but will now. However, I wanted to point out that it said "for the major browsers and versions used by PC and Mac users: She used a colon there only the one time. The rest are commas. I am assuming those are ones explaining the ones it is "optimized" for. Then the last line said anything else may have problems. Any problems we are having now, are problems caused by changes. Once they are satisfied with things, then we can start worrying.

Support for WindowsI.E.7 is being phased out by Microsoft. When a manufacturer stops supporting a particular version, we also move away from supporting it.

Don't know why it was on there. That link is the same as this one. Brings you right back to here.

Seems to me, if I remember correctly, I have XP.

Enterprise, AL(Zone 8b)

Jnette, don't remember about xp, but try clicking on Computer, then help. Then you should be able to see which version of Windows you have.

Northeast, WA(Zone 5a)

No, it is Windows Live. Windows 7, Home Premium

Wrightstown, NJ(Zone 7a)

Don't worry Jen, I just spoke to my friend, who is computer technician who does work for very large companies in NY as well as PA and NJ and he said he has heard NOTHING regarding microsoft and Windows 7. But he did say, Windows 8 is basically 7 but with a different front end. Not sure what that means but I am not going to worry about this now. He feelsl sure Windows 7 will be around for a long time and we will be just fine. I will keep you posted if I hear anymore from him in writing. He knows we are having problems here and I am sure he will help me fix my problem. You and I have the same Windows so I will keep you informed privately.

Beautiful, BC(Zone 8b)

I have Windows 7 - 64bit and haven't had any problems on either my laptop or desktop. The problem may very well be with your resolution settings. I have 1280 x 800 resolution on the laptop and probably something close on the desktop. Resolution on a monitor can make a huge difference on how webpages display.

Wrightstown, NJ(Zone 7a)

Everything on mine is fine except the font. My spacing, pictures, margins, everything is fine. Font is only problem and that just happened. That is what is so crazy about this. Nothing was broken and then all of a sudden the font went to very small. All setting are same as they have been. Nothing on my computer has been changed. This is all a DG problem I feel sure.

Beautiful, BC(Zone 8b)

I'm sure you can adjust that by right-clicking anywhere on your desktop, personalize, display (at bottom) and choosing "set custom text size (DPI). See if that makes a difference for you.

I'm sorry - I don't know why I typed that. Windows 7 (the operating system) is still perfectly fine. Internet Explorer 7 (the browser) was released in 2006 and is now pretty much obsolete, having been superseded by IE8, IE9 and IE10.

Ottawa, ON(Zone 5a)

Oh, thanks for clarifying that, Terry. I have Windows 7 on my newer computer - 1 1/2 years and you would drag me kicking and screaming to Windows 8. Still prefer XP on my older computer.

Northeast, WA(Zone 5a)

Yes, I have heard some pretty bad things about Windows 8. Maybe by the time we HAVE to change, they will have the bugs ironed out?? Ya think?

Beautiful, BC(Zone 8b)

Oddly, I am getting, "No site configured at this address " for DG using Firefox yet I can access the site using IE10. I'm not sure what to make of this as I was able to access the site just fine until later this evening. I thought it was a system-down issue. My Firefox is up-to-date. I cleared the cache, cleared the DNS and reset, closed and restarted Firefox. strange.

RE: Windows 8 Not happening on this computer! (I Have an old Dell built in 2006 and purchased reconditioned in 2009) To be fair to Microsoft, Windows 8 has been designed to accommodate smart phone and tablets and it is very much orientated to touch screen devices - this is the new "front end" mentioned by JBerger above. I believe it is not "buggy" as such, it is the large changes in the WAY things are done that has put so many computer users off-side. I know how this feels as I was completely lost for months when I got dragged kicking and screaming from XP to Vista when I updated to this computer in 2009. Vista is still supported by Microsoft so I probably won't change anything until this computer drops dead!

Having said that, I am currently using Firefox 22.0, which is the most up to date version, and Vista copes with it just fine. I don't use any other browser and I never have so I can't comment on IE or Chrome.

My issues are much more with the changes to the "look and feel" of Dave's Garden itself.

1/ I truly HATE the orange bar which appears in various places above menus and journal categories - to my eyesight it stands out so much that it affects my ability to concentrate on what I am trying to read beneath it. I much preferred the old suite of dark blue, green, purple etc as they were not intrusive.

2/ You say you have fixed the Journal search but it used to appear wherever you were in your journal so you could
go quickly from Category to searching, now you have to back out to the top of your journal and start all over - by the time I have done this I have usually lost my train of thought!

3/ I also need the Number/Images column back when I am in a Category - without that I find my Journal difficult to use as I often sort by the number as that gives me my chronological order of input.

4/ Something wonky is going on with the unvisited/visited link colours - I am getting Purple for visited and Green for unvisited - I can't remember what it was before but it is disconcerting and uncomfortable now - I am not sure whether I can adjust that myself or not?

Anyway, that's all I can think of for now,

Ciao, KK.

I beiieve Jberger may be right because everything else I do is fine, just DG is out of whack.

Ok, it somehow fixed itself with a few restarts and a cold-boot. ignore the above.

Rancho Santa Rita, TX(Zone 8a)

hi Kar, it seems that at this hour its
just you & me.

Just wanted to say, you can set the
colors for visited & unvisited to
amy colors you wish. It should be
in preferences or tools.

I agree totally wuth your statement
about the colors.

Specially that ugly brown bar across
the top.

As gardeners, we set great store by
beauty, but it has been thrown out
into the compost bin.

If I had the money I would buy out
whoever owns DG and treat it right.

Ironically, the orange bar you're seeing is (I think) a holdover from the old DG format. I know we have had that color in our headers in the past. I agree it's a little disconcerting, but whether it is new or a lingering remnant of the past, it's something we can work on phasing out with something that works with the new, softer color palette.

The journal issues (search, RID/image column, etc.) are being addressed by the techs.

The font colors for hyperlinks (read/unread) are a departure from the past blue/green colors. Like anything else that we look at repeatedly, they will soon become "the norm" and we won't think twice about them.

Ottawa, ON(Zone 5a)

BTW, I just checked the look in IE at home and it looks OK - no superimposed print. I'm betting that the Air Canada lounges have an old version of IE. The Internet sure is slow too.

Please review my first post: "Keep in mind that a lot of time and effort have gone into these improvements. You may have an initial negative reaction to the changes, but let's keep rude comments and non-specific complaints and grumblings to ourselves, please."

Oh Please...!

Rancho Santa Rita, TX(Zone 8a)

I stand chastised.

Didn't recall seeing that.

But I guess ths post is also off topic.

Murfreesboro, TN(Zone 7a)

I will start a new thread when we have an updated status and a timeframe for rolling out some of the fixes. In the meantime, I do ask that only NEW issues or errors be posted here. We are aware and working on the questions and issues detailed in the almost 200 posts in this thread. Let's let it rest until there is something new for us to report to you in a new thread, or if a new issue comes up in the meantime (fingers crossed that won't happen.)

Algonquin, IL(Zone 5a)

Amen! Thanks Terry.
I'm sure I'm not the only one getting tired of jumping to this thread every time it shows there's a new post...only to see a lot of the same-old, same-old.

I mean absolutely no offense to the people that have posted with problems. I've posted as well...but Terry's right. We're just repeating the same stuff over and over. Let's all take a deep breath and try to live with it until Terry, Melody and the Techs can get it worked out.

There are much worse things in life than technical issues with DG. At least we have two wonderful allies going to bat for us. Don't forget, they're dealing with the same issues most of us are.

Okay, I'll get off my soapbox now...

Someone here mentioned going to "VIEW" on the (top of my screen), then clicking on "STYLE", then making the choice "NO STYLE"

This, for me, will, temporarily make it easier to view all the threads with larger font and no empty sides. I hope this helps.

Charlotte, NC(Zone 7b)

evelyn - made it much worse for me.

I'll wait until everything has been corrected.

Northeast, WA(Zone 5a)

I don't think there is much point in trying to correct your computers at this time. Might as well wait until all the changes are made and the techs are done with whatever they are doing and then see how it all sifts out and work with them then.

Each time I got mine just right and really liked it, all of a sudden something else would happen that would mess it up.

I quit saying it was good. LOL, bad sign.
