DG Has a New Look (con't)

Rose Lodge, OR(Zone 8b)

Baja, are you aware of the "skip to new" link at the top of each forum page that takes you to the 1st unread post?

Murfreesboro, TN(Zone 7a)

thanks Summerkid :-)

Tell y'all what. I will start a new thread when there's something new to report. Until then, we can probably let this rest.

Love that!!! Been thinking much the same! Maybe stay away a while…Let the bugs work out!

Royal Oak, MI(Zone 6a)

For those with issues trying to read the small font, you can always hold down the Control key and the mouse roller to change the font size in your browser. Sorry if it's been mentioned before, but I use this all the time as a temporary fix when I'm changing my browser size at work.

P.S. I'm really glad the thumbnail issue in the journal is on the fix list. That's the only reason I read this whole thread. I hate to be one of those people who complain to take their business elsewhere, but I use my journal EVERY day. I use the thumbnails to see which plants need updated pics. My husband is always hearing me say "today is picture day!" before taking my camera outside. I dislike some of the changes here so far but would hate leaving DG even more.

C'mon guys. You really didn't test this before you launched, did you. I'll try again in a month and see if it is working yet. Still have trouble finding my journal. Of course all the pix are gone. What a mess

Hi Ted,

Yes, we did test it. I hope you'll try it again in less than a month because I'm pretty sure we'll have these tag-ends tied up before then :-)

Your journal is still pretty much where it's always been, and the pictures are still there - just not on the main page where you work on it. If you can't find it, scroll up to the top of this thread, and look up - you'll see a link that says "My Journal" and it's there.

Rancho Santa Rita, TX(Zone 8a)

yes, I have always used skip to new fnction !

But as I reported close to a week ago, when
clicking on it now, iys takes me to a totally
nother area, perhaps a new galaxy.

There is a workaround : scroll to the very end,
then work backwards up, scrolling to find where
I last left off, which means needing to remember
time & date of last message read.

BTW, clearing your cache etc etc means you
will lose all remembered acct names & passwords
for other accts & websites )8((

Murfreesboro, TN(Zone 7a)

BajaBlue, I'm not sure why your skip-to-new isn't working properly, but it works fine for me.

Clearing your cache may log you off of sites, but if you've saved the login and passwords (most sites and your browser help you with that if you allow them), you can easily log back in. And even if you didn't do that, most sites have a fairly easy password retrieval/reset function in place.

Rancho Santa Rita, TX(Zone 8a)

Just tried again: "skip to new" takes me to the journal,
which I do not even use.

Rose Lodge, OR(Zone 8b)

Baja, clearing your cache does not mean you erase passwordz & other stuff. My computer offers a dialog with checkboxes for what I want to clean up.

annapolis, MD(Zone 7b)

Terry and Baja, This goes back to the "ghost column" discussed earlier which overlays to navigation buttons (and first third of page) Iguess this has not yet been addressed either.

The ghost column is a verticle menu bar with various options :Home. Guides and Info, Communities, Garden Showcase, Products and Services , that is to the right of center about a third of the way to the margin. http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/p.php?pid=9580402

I do the same work around as Baja, navigating up from the bottom (Firefox 2.0) or switch my browser view/page style from Basic Style to No Style.

For me, Garden Showcase overlaps Skip to New so trying to Skip to New takes me to Garden Showcase instead.

Lol, maybe one of us should send you our computers so you could see that what works fine for you is
only a factoid that keeps us hoping it will work for us cache clearing, rebooting, technology neophytes, Is there a "Daves Garden For Dummies" ?

Am waiting for the All Clear before I do any more fiddling around. As to clearing the cache, there are options in every browser and computer of specificall what does and does not get cleared and whether the clearing is done automatically or manually so you never have to loose passwords, etc.

Northeast, WA(Zone 5a)

Yes, that overlapping is terrible. But, Texasblue gave me step by step on how to clear the cache and it straightened a lot out including that. But now, after working good for a few days, I am messed up in other ways. I hate to say this but I think we are being used as testing and our nerves are frayed.

I keep saying I will wait until they are done, but if they are using us to test each thing they do, what good would that do?

Don't clear all the shelves of the xanax JB. Save some for the rest of us.

Beautiful, BC(Zone 8b)

I don't mean to be a bug or anything but is the "report an error" button on the "repair list" for plantfiles?

Murfreesboro, TN(Zone 7a)

growin, it is indeed on the list.

Wichita, KS(Zone 6b)

The first letter of each line is sitting right on the very edge and makes it really hard to read. Is this part of what is still to be fixed?

Rancho Santa Rita, TX(Zone 8a)

coleup, dahlin, brilliant minds think alike !

This very morning I was calling ups to
get shipping rates for sending Terry my
rimonitor (biggest I could afford) & PC !

This is my question: what version of
windows is this code being written for ?
Could the problem be compatibility of
windows with code ?

So far aside from the font size....the one thing I am finding that I don't like is the Member List. Didn't it used to be alphabetical....period??! Now it is alphabetical but also arranged by the year they joined DG. I was trying look up up someone and I have no idea when they joined and would really rather not have to sort thru the last 13 years!

Gainesville, FL(Zone 9a)

Besides that, if you cared about when a person joined, you can just click on their name and get that. I got backed up on that list this morning, looking to see if an old FL member was still a member, or if he had had to let his membership expire. I gave up. It also looks to be everyone who ever signed up for Daves, a member now or not.

Enterprise, AL(Zone 8b)

On the member list, click on user name and the list will be in order by the alphabet, click on the date and it will rearrange again by date.

Gainesville, FL(Zone 9a)

I tried that, and it skipped me from A to F.

Enterprise, AL(Zone 8b)

nanny56 does it work for you that way too? Mine woks perfectly, no skipping.

Algonquin, IL(Zone 5a)

nanny, I get the same thing you do. I tried clicking on "N" and I got a whole list of user names starting with N, but they were in order by date not alphabetically.

seedfork, I didn't even see any options like you did.

Enterprise, AL(Zone 8b)

nutsaboutnature,
when you click on the letter "A" for example it brings up a list of names. Up over the name is the word "Username", "Subscriber", "Day of Signup" , "USDA Zone" and "Locale". Click on any of those for a newly arranged listing.

Wrightstown, NJ(Zone 7a)

I think I read in the newsletter that there were quite a few new members this past week. I can not help but wonder if they are having problems or maybe they just do not know there is anything wrong. Are they in for a surprise. That is a lot of new members considering this entire site is having problems.

I am trying to be a good girl and keep wondering what in bloody blazes did they do to make the fonts so small only on the sections that makes changes constantly. Have you noticed that? Or maybe I am not being too clear, but then that should be no surprise. The name of the person who is posting, the number of posts, the date, the posts, but then my theory gets shot down because the Zone and Location is tiny also and they do not change.

Someone needs to talk to the boss......there are too many unhappy people here now. Then again we have seen many changes in the past months of the new administration and this is just another one to add to the list. I can not believe a staff of technicians can not fix this problem if they know what they are doing. Complex or not.

Murfreesboro, TN(Zone 7a)

Nothing in the memberlist has changed: http://davesgarden.com/community/memberlist/

To be more specific, none of our content has changed (formatting aside), so if it's sorted in a different order, it is a matter of clicking on a heading to re-sort it.

The padding, both to the left and right of the text, and top and bottom needs to be increased to allow more white space between characters and lines. That's a known issue they are working on along with trying to find the optimal way to allow for varying font sizes without having scrolling issues for those who want/need very large fonts and/or who don't have a particularly large or high-resolution monitor.

BajaBlue, the site is optimized for the major browsers and versions used by PC and Mac users: Windows I.E. 8 and higher, Mozilla's Firefox, Chrome and - I believe - Safari for Mac. Other browsers and/or older versions may fight with the site now or in the future.

N.A.N...I see now there in the dark Blue at the top of the graph.....click on USER NAME etc. and then they will be in alphabetical order.

Thanks Seedfork!

Northeast, WA(Zone 5a)

Well, I went thru the drill of cleaning my cache that Texasblue gave me and I don't have to scroll back and forth to read the posts any more. However, the font is still small. As far as using the wheel and ctl button, that is a pain. Mine isn't that small.

Algonquin, IL(Zone 5a)

Thanks, seedfork! I tried it and it works...just like you said.

Thanks, Terry!

The voting booth seems to be mangled. The results are extremely long red bars. I've never seen it do that.

Yep, we're (painfully) aware of it...it's a casualty of really old code meeting new formatting standards.

Lord,
Thank you for Dave's Garden...

It was here when I needed it at a most difficult time in my life. I would not have maintained my sanity through an exceedingly difficult marriage if not for the peace, harmony, and love I found when I joined this website. I owe Dave dearly for all the knowledge that has been freely shared with me here. I owe Dave dearly for all the questions that were answered here. I owe Dave dearly for all the compliments I have received in these past 6 years for having a "green thumb," and I have to exclaim, "Oh, no, I don't have a green thumb!" "Everything I know, I learned on Dave's Garden!"

Lord, thank you for the discussion threads where we are free to express our opinions. Thank you for the highs and lows in the discussions, and the excitement and passion with which ideas and ways of doing things are shared. And, thank you that in some heated discussions, everyone is able to walk away intact (mostly), and come back another day to continue gardening...

Lord, thank you for the Admins who do the best job they can to meet the needs of the membership almost "Johnny-on-the-spot," as we present them. Sometimes, almost in the twinkling of an eye, an issue is resolved as soon as we hit the "send" button. Thank you for their diligent eyes monitoring the threads to keep us from harm, harming each other, or disrupting the peace that Dave intended for the Garden... Thank you, Lord, for the patience they exercise in ducking and dodging the many bullets and criticisms that are aimed at them, especially when they are so few, and we are so many...

Thank you, Lord, for their continued diligence in wanting to advance the website to be the best it can be for us, even when we don't quite understand or want to accept that we, too, must continue to grow and flourish in an ever-changing technical world. As we prune so many things in our own gardens to encourage growth and expansion, so too must the website undergo the necessary, and, sometimes painful, cuts and rearrangements to bloom into the vision Dave had for it, so long ago.

So, Lord, I owe Dave, dearly, a whole lot. And, I can never begin to repay what this website has afforded me. But, if it is acceptable in your sight, Lord, let me repay Dave by being an example of patience and tolerance for the minor inconveniences I am experiencing now.

Thank you for the fingers I have to hold a mouse and scroll, left to right, to read the threads. There are some who don't have fingers...

Thank you for the links that still work properly. Some whole websites don't work at all, any more...

Thank you for the tags that I still have access to, that could have gone away....

Thank you for Terry...

Thank you for Melody...

Thank you for Dave...

and the Garden...

Godspeed and Good Harvest,

Linda

AMEN.

P.S. I'm still waiting for the text to be large enough to read without having to Ctrl+
but I'm not going anywhere in the mean time.

SE Houston (Hobby), TX(Zone 9a)

Lord,
Thank you for Ctrl+ to increase the font sizes, so we can read the text...

And, thank you for HoneybeeNC, who's staying, 'cause I would miss her if she left!

Bless you Gymgirl!

Gymgirl - you have no idea how much it means to me to be needed. ^^_^^

So, Terry. I just realized I submitted a photo of the wrong daylily to PlantFiles earlier today. I can't find the link I would use to report my error. How do I notify to delete that photo?
Thanks so much,
Alana

Murfreesboro, TN(Zone 7a)

If you can tell me which one, I'll take care of it. (Small consolation, I know...but even if we had the report-an-error visible right now, it would still require a bit of extra work to dig it out of the pending queue to remove it.)

Beautiful, BC(Zone 8b)

Well said Linda. I concur. Sorry Terry. I didn't mean to cause additional pain. It was just an observation, to which I made light of. Changes happen and are part of the evolution of the community and the technical side of the site. I like it and haven't had problems. Thank you to the Admin team for hearing us and advocating for our best interests.

Beautiful, BC(Zone 8b)

Terry - there is only 2 images in the pending queue and it looks like Daylily 'Ellen Christine' from poisondartfrog. I can only approve, not delete.

Barbourville, KY(Zone 7a)

That's the one-it is really Scatterbrain.
And thank you.
