DG Has a New Look (con't)

Darius, I was going to try Firefox next but you answered any questions I may have had. Most people have PCs and most instructions are geared toward Windows users. Glad there are several of us with Macs so we can share information. My first was in 1988 --- one of those all-in-ones, beige, 9-inch screen, and with 1mb (or was it 3) of memory. Wow. I couldn't tell you how many I've had in between. I have Safari and Firefox installed on this one iMac Intel with 20 inch screen), in addition to the old AOL browser that I never use. Dave's has always worked fine for me.

I can't find the link to member mailing addresses.
Anyone know how to get to these?

JudyinGA, no, I meant this text, at the top of the pages:

Communities > Forums > Dave's Garden
Forum: Dave's Garden Replies: 82, Views: 914
Unwatch Thread - Mark as unread - Print - Post Reply - Skip to New

I just think that should match the font used for this text, which comes out differently, though, when I copy and paste it:

Even though it's a Google product I like Chrome, and I also use Adblock for Chrome which prevents pop-up ads. And Chrome allows you to open up an incognito window, so you can do a search that won't be linked to your other online data.

Oh my goodness…JudyinGA…Absolutely no offense taken…I love that expression as well! Especially being one of those redheads from birth!
I'm surely behind the times when it comes to computer use. This Mac is my first and only…I resisted joining the 21st century for a long time! I'm a newbie as far as computers are concerned. In the learning stages! But I do know enough to stay away from google!
Haven't had any problems so far…With the changes made here...Knock on wood!

Ottawa, ON(Zone 5a)

Re the font size, I went to my preferences and selected 16. I see links much larger, my home page much larger and the font when I'm typing much larger, but the font when I'm reading posts is still small.

I'm using DH's laptop which runs XP and Firefox.

Jacksonville, FL(Zone 9a)

I agree ViolaAnn…The same here…Using Mac Safari.

Algonquin, IL(Zone 5a)

Terry ~ Thanks so much!! That's great news about tagged pages!
I always thought it was my computer causing the problem. Since it always locked up trying to access the page of tags, I just stopped trying. I guess that's what you meant when you said it was hard to navigate. I sure won't miss that part one bit since I couldn't use it anyway.

Fleming Island, FL(Zone 9a)

So, without a "link" to have to remember, how does one get to the Extras page????

Here is Extra fun stuff
http://davesgarden.com/extras.php

Clarksville, TN(Zone 7a)

I don't think you can right now, Qwilter.

Quote from Qwilter :

The link GardenGuyKin found and shared will work for now, while we look at sorting out all the things that were in "Extras" and deciding where they need to go.

Once we do that, we will provide permanent links in the navigation area, so you won't have to keep up with that link :-)

Chicago, IL(Zone 5b)

HI, I also use Mac//Safari and I have had no problems at all. I don't like the small print, but that is being taken care of. I am new to the Mac and if anything was wrong, I don't know what I would do. I've had it for over year and I still getting to know it.

Clarksville, TN(Zone 7a)

That's the same link I provided, Qwilter. :)

(Pam) Warren, CT(Zone 5b)

Thanks, that link works. I copied it into my notepad so I can get to it when needed.

Albuquerque, NM(Zone 7a)

Yippee! I was about to spend time today copying my tags.
This is excellent news:

Quoting:
Per Terry:
I have happy news to report that I stand corrected regarding the future of tags. We are not phasing them out after all. (We just won't be compiling everyone's tags into that unwieldy page of non-standardized tags that was almost always impossible to load - THAT is what is being phased out.)

Terry, this is the response I got on one of the parts of the link of Kin's: A device attached to the system is not functioning.

Did you all know this? Jeanette

edited to add: This is in response to "more information" on cookies in the balloon in the bottom left hand corner.

Thanks to Kin and Cville_Gardener for the link. Remember, it is temporary and I will let you know as soon as we have an ETA for the links on the old Extras page to be re-introduced.

Jnette, that sounds like a dialogue box relating to your personal system and set-up.

Northeast, WA(Zone 5a)

Ok. But, you said you are continuing to make changes so won't do anything until you are done. Thanks for the quick response Terry.

Tulsa, OK(Zone 7a)

The width of the text lines makes the site difficult to use. I don't want to scroll back and forth horizontally to read the content. I hope that this is fixed soon. I know that the site isbeing revised but this is not a proper revision.

Murfreesboro, TN(Zone 7a)

Rocco, do you have one of the following situations?

1. An older, smaller, and/or lower resolution monitor?
2. Browser zoomed in extra-large?
3. Monitor settings customized and/or not set to the resolution recommended for your monitor?

If you answered yes to one or more of those, the work the techs are doing right now is aimed to help you and others with a similar situation.

Winter Springs, FL(Zone 9b)

Terry,
Thank you for adding the search tool back to the journals, I guess the photos on the left side of the journal will come back again, assuming that is the RID column you are referring to?

I like the new banner look and know it takes time to work out the kinks, just want to thank you for providing a thread to answer the questions. It is more than some websites ever offer when they make changes.

Terry?
Whoa...I just posted in a thread and while I typed, the words were REALLY small. Not just the final part like the last couple days, but now even the draft I was working on.

Please tell me this is something you guys are experimenting with, rather than my eyes suddenly going bad or my computer messing up!

Okay, now what's going on??? The font size while typing this post was about the same as it has been, but while responding to my inquiry in the Insect ID forum (just a few minutes ago) the words I typed were really tiny.

Tulsa, OK(Zone 7a)

Terry
I have a 22" flat screen monitor that performed well on the forums before the change. What is happening now is very frustrating and I may just have to give it up. I renewed my subscription recently and now wonder if I should have done that.

Wrightstown, NJ(Zone 7a)

I do not answer yes to those questions Terry mentioned in her post to Rocco and I am still writing in one size font and reading it in another much much smaller font.

I also have noticed today that the font looked like it was changing in size and at one point thought it was a tiny bit larger, but that must have been my eye.....it is back to teeny weeny again.

My machine is all new just a few months ago and my monitor is 15 or 16 inches.
Nothing fancy but all good and up to date on all updates. Therefore I am confident it is not my computer equipment or monitor. I am also following all suggestions from Terry.

I feel sure sooner or later someone will flip the switch they did not know they flipped to start this and we will all be happy...............except for the heat. That is another forum. Sorry. Have a good evening. Jb

Terry, my main complaint is PlantFiles. Useless. Unless I am using it wrong.

I go to Specific and put in Epimediums. Wanted to see what they are. It told me not to be so specific and go to General. I did that. It told me no results and to go to Specific. So, I used the space in the top left corner, and it gave me Watchdog. Now where do I go?

Think I will do better with Google.

Jeanette

Murfreesboro, TN(Zone 7a)

Jnette, try searching for Epimedium (no "s" on the end): http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/adv_search.php?searcher[common]=&searcher[family]=&searcher[genus]=Epimedium&searcher[species]=&searcher[cultivar]=&searcher[hybridizer]=&searcher[grex]=&search_prefs[blank_cultivar]=&search_prefs[sort_by]=rating&images_prefs=both&Search=Search

As far as the font size changing, I dunno. I don't think the techs are working (it's Sunday), and I haven't observed anything odd.

Rose Lodge, OR(Zone 8b)

Funny! I get different results by typing in "epimedium" and "epimediums" ... but I get extensive results each time at least.

Murfreesboro, TN(Zone 7a)

Within PlantFiles, you should only get results by typing it in the singular. It's doing a key word search and no plant name is listed as plural.

Northeast, WA(Zone 5a)

TERRY!! Now all of a sudden I have to do like some of the others and scroll back and forth to read the post!! I haven't had to do that. What is going on? If the techs aren't working today, why am I getting these changes? Someone is doing something because I am not trying to do anything. I was happy.

As far as the Plantfiles goes, why would I have to go to a whole different link like that when we have PlantFiles?

I didn't type the word Epimediium in there. I cut and pasted from a previous post. Not sure which one it was. Who it came from.

Northeast, WA(Zone 5a)

Nope, got the same no results found on both General and Specialized by cut and pasting from one of yours and no "s".

I will just use google on this so don't worry about it. Must be something I am doing.

But this shoving my page back and forth to read it when it has obviously been changed to the smaller font will drive me crazy. I had that years ago and it was fixed ever since. Will not put up with it again.

Somewhere in, MD(Zone 7b)

Jnette, here's what I was directed to when I did a search for Epimedium: http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/adv_search.php?searcher[common]=Epimedium&searcher[family]=&searcher[genus]=&searcher[species]=&searcher[cultivar]=&searcher[hybridizer]=&searcher[grex]=&search_prefs[blank_cultivar]=&search_prefs[sort_by]=rating&images_prefs=both&Search=Search

Here's what I did:
1- at the top of the page, I clicked on "Guides and Information"
2- from this page I clicked on "Plant Files"
3- On this page, I clicked on the green box within which it says "Click here to search for plants"
4- on this page I typed in, at the very top line for common name "Epimedium"
5- then I clicked "search"
6- it then took me to the page with 45 exact matches.

I hope the link that I provided comes out right -- I copied it from the address bar in my browser then pasted it in here. I've never provided links in here before, so I hope it's correct, but if not, then you can follow the steps I just typed out and that should do it for ya.
=)

Jnette, I'm sorry but as far as I know, we didn't do anything over the weekend, and I don't see any changes. It is possible that your system did a routine clearing of cache and cookies, and things changed on your end. Give us time - we are working on getting the font size and scrolling worked out.

Quote from Jnette :

The link I gave you was to results from a PlantFiles search, plugging "epimedium" in as the genus name. I'm not sure what you mean by a whole different search.

[quote="Jnette"]I didn't type the word Epimediium in there. I cut and pasted from a previous post. Not sure which one it was. Who it came from.

If you don't get any results when you copy/paste epimedium into a PlantFiles search, my guess is that it was misspelled or it had some space before/after the word (very easy to do when copying and pasting.)

The system is looking for an exact match - we don't have any PlantFiles entries that have spaces before/after a plant's generic (genus) name. And I can absolutely, positively, 100% guarantee you that you will not get the same results with Epimediums vs. Epimedium - unless they both have a stray space before/after. In which case you will get 0 results either way. If you "strike out", scroll down a bit and the system tries to offer guesses/suggestions for whatever it is you're searching for.

With that said, PlantFiles searching is a totally separate and unrelated issue from this thread's topic, and I would like to leave this communication "channel' dedicated to questions or concerns regarding the site's features and navigation, okay?

NO NEWS TODAY.. Could we please have an update on the progress of changing the font back to normal?

Murfreesboro, TN(Zone 7a)

I'm sorry, but I have no new news today. It will probably be pretty quiet this week as the techs work on some fixes and test them on staging. As soon as I know of anything new or changing, I'll let you know.

SUGGESTION:

Could you please freeze & close out this
thread and start a new one ?

I tis very tedious to refresh this, it being
so long, and needing to scroll all the
way down too where we left off the last
time.

AND needing to scroll back & forth
repeatedly (besides getting a headache
AND eyestrain !

We are hanging on with batted breath
to Terry's every word !

thanks !
