Ive changed my font, it works for the home page, but all the threads are still in tiny font. What I see as Im typing is the larger font, but as soon as I press send, it post tiny and everything I have to read is tiny. Any hints for correcting that?

DG Has a New Look (con't)
Wondering if a LOT of people complained about how this site looked before..is the reason so many changes going on. Personally I had no problems with the old way it looked (home page and print size) but have issues with the way it looks now. Never could understand why people feel it necessary to mess with a good thing, and in the long run make it aq disaster with too many problems. Is this just job security??
pushing the paying members away more and more every day .. getting worse and worse everyday.. really???
the look is horrible and gives me a headache.. getting close to not worrying about my remaining subscription and just never coming back
I think it would help alot if we were told why all this is going on. Is it to improve the site and give the members more features?? Is there going to be more of an emphasis on things other than plants. Is that why its more starke now and not a pretty banner? I think if someone could tell us something positive that will come out of all this, it would go a long way to quell the complaints.
Another feature that is still missing is the ability to report errors for PlantFiles entries.
Please fix the margins/padding so that the text and images are not all crushed together. It's really easy to do for anyone with a basic knowledge of HTML and CSS.
Hoping the font size is temporary. I hate it. Upgraded to IE10 since I tried firefox and don't care for it. Already zoomed in to 125%
I was getting used to things but this font size is something I don't want to get used to.
Terry, I hope the font size is a temporary thing. I have macular degeneration and I can't see this to even tell what it says.

It is temporary. See my note here; http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/p.php?pid=9587999
Gardenglory Terry addresses why the first major renovation of DG in 10 years became increasingly necessary in this post:
http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/p.php?pid=9585271
Seems to me, the 'hardest' renovations are when we have to live there while it is happening. (It's also when the potential for 'divorce' is highest.) I'm making myself as comfortable as possible for the duration and putting up with some extra clicks, scrolls and under my control adjustments for my daily romp in this garden. I believe it is 'temporary' and have no reason to suspend that belief. Like the Serenity Prayer I hope all of Daves Garden have the 'wisdom to know the difference'.
If I encounter something odd or new I'll give a shout out to Admin or post here. I'm following this thread because it will alert me to when it is my problem and not something being adjusted on this site or to learn a work around for my semi-unique set up of circumstances and gear.
Kinda like my garden, a work in progress and not always ready for prime time!
Thanks Terry for being so on this!

I posted this back on July 3, but perhaps it got lost in the shuffle. Here's the long and the short of it:
As to the question of why we implemented these changes, it was due to several factors, mainly the navigation, which was becoming more difficult with every new addition. Aesthetics were secondary, but they were/are important. A website is in some ways just like any public facility: we try to take good care of what we have, but even so, occasionally a fresh coat of paint, a new roof, or even an extensive remodeling becomes necessary. The renovations impose a temporary inconvenience on everyone but aren't we all glad that someone cared enough to invest in keeping it updated and functioning properly?
My font size is also too small. If I go into "Tools" and then "Zoom", I can increase the font size for easier reading, but then I have to keep scrolling to the right to read. I now have it set at 125% and it is way too small. If I increase it to 150%, it is easier to read, but then it is continuous scrolling.
Will be waiting till this is fixed..............
Even with the tiny font, which I have been unable to change, I still have to scroll to the right to read an entire post.
Another feature that is still missing is the ability to report errors for PlantFiles entries.

TomH3787, both of those issues are front and center on the tech's radar screen :-)
Glad to hear that. I thought it had something to do with using my sister's Mac and Safari, but I guess not. I can read it, but the eyes were getting strained. I hope you are able to resolve the size soon.
I have to ask this...Why change things if you didn't have it all worked out yet?
I mean the headaches this is causing people, the frustration and it's just NOT a happy place to come to anymore!!
I have a renewal coming up and I really don't think I am going to renew. A good company would of warned us this was going to take place...maybe even ask for idea's of what WE THE PAYING CUSTOMER WANTS! After 7 years here I am no longer comfortable or happy...in fact when I come here I get very tense because nothing works the way it did or just can't find what your looking for. :(
This whole experience reminds me (and thank you Judy for the fun reminder!) of when DH and I had new hardwood flooring put into almost the WHOLE house (all but the obvious spots-kitchen/dining room/bathrooms) all at once... we had to drag the bed into the dining room and sleep there - squished between the couches, end tables, and dining room table. HAA!! What a fun few weeks that was!! Maybe a tad inconvenient and uncomfortable, but the adventure sure made for some fun and funny stories we will be able to enjoy for years to come! =)
Personally, I have found that going to "preferences" (here on the site), and choosing a font size of 14 has helped tremendously with being able to read anything, anywhere on the site (all forums etc, not just home page). I only had to make that change once, by the way, I don't have to do it with each and every new page I go to.
But, I will say that I have no debilitating visual impairments, only general lousy vision corrected by contact lenses.
Thanks for the "font" response Terry. I tried to change it in my preferences but that only works when I type not when I read. Hopefully this is on the priority list.

pixie62560, I have been a member and admin here for over a decade. I do believe DG has always been one of the most responsive companies I've ever worked with or for.
The new design and navigation was tested and ready (we thought) when we rolled it out. Did we miss the boat on search boxes (and report an error buttons) and the items in the extras area? Yes, and I accept responsibility along with the others who tested it - we should have caught those, but we are human and we failed to see what wasn't there.
What we couldn't have anticipated was the degree to which some people customize their fonts and monitor settings. The font size (and scrolling left-right) are issues we are now attempting to work out so they - like the rest of us - can use and enjoy the site and it takes some trial-and-error to figure out how to accommodate those needs.
Terry:
Thanks for the info. So far, search boxes appear on some pages, not all, and no advanced search option appears as yet. I'll await its arrival with bated breath.
HI FOLKS-I just joined DG a week ago. Baja Blue suggested that I come to this forum/thread (and provided a link here) after reading the thread I started on the TEST forum re: problems uploading photos. I'm a new kid in town, so to speak, and not at all tech-savvy (I'm posting this from a tiny mobile phone, not even a 'Smartphone'), learning as I'm going. As such, maybe I have no business interacting on this thread, maybe I should just watch & listen. Just wanted to say tho, after reading some of the griping, this reminds me of what's going on in the town where I've been living for almost 30 years. I have a lot of issues with changes that I see here, but new people think it's paradise-by-the-sea. I also want to say that this is the first website I've been to where I've ever even had the desire to interact with other people online. With most websites I think, "Oh my goodness, is this what the world's coming to?" Okay, I'm being long-winded and off-topic. Sorry. Before yesterday, I never interacted online with anyone I didn't know, except to pay bills. Okay, I'll shut up.
Would have beennice to know this thread even existed......................
Do not think it was well advertised.
Welcome to DG, BoatleafBetty!!
Everyone's opinion is valued here no matter how old or new they are. Also, though DG may not quite be a Democracy, it's about as close as you'll find on the web.
I, too, am not really into interacting with other people online, but DG is very different than most other websites (in my humble opinion).
I'm not too happy with all the changes, either, but I'm not running for the door. There's just way too much to like about DG.
I agree. Patience is a virtue and time will pass anyway. I've tried several other gardening websites but I'm back here. It's my fave.
Regarding font size. I know the techs are working on some solutions for those who have their browsers set to a very large size. You can adjust your DG font size independently of your browser, and currently my font is still displaying fine.

The above is Terry's reply regarding the font size. I respectfully disagree because adjusting the font size on my browser puts my entire screen picture out of line. Mine was perfect before yesterday and then I tried everything again that we were told in the beginning and the font still has not corrected itself. It is different for every person and that is what makes it so difficult. I am not a computer tech so I can not say someone is not doing something correctly. I am just wondering why, when almost every thing was working so well did they change the font, of all things that we can adjust to suit our needs, now that is not working. If I am frustrated I can only imagine how Terry and Melody must feel.
BajaBlue, are you using the General or Specific Search?
I just tried search for Rubus in both and they both returned
perfect results.
I just went in to check. Here is what happens as o right now:
I was here
http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/adv_search.php?Search=Click+here+to+search+for+plants
green banner - specific search
"click here to search for plants
click on common name = botanary
family = ok
genus = definitions
species = ok
cultivar = bug & insect dictionary
hybridizer = ok
orchid grex = videos
I was trying a serch for roses & couldn't
even enter one letter, Honestly, was
trying to research ALL Austin roses, so,
at some point when the dust has settled,
could a box be added for breeder ?
I do love DG when it is onits game, so
I am waitibg expectantly, hoping for the
best !
thanks for listening to us !
OK, everything was fine until today, this morning in fact, when the font size became really small as have the spaces for the boxes that divide the entries.
What happened?
Changing font size only helps in limited areas and does not at all affect the cramped crunched spacing. It's perfectly fine in the message box as I'm typing but it does not affect
the posted boxes . It's a very erratic fix. Help!!!!!!!!!!!
Just wanna say I love DG. It is the ONLY website I pay
good money to be on.
I just hope the cyber temper-tantrum passes soon.
And some advice : When you go thru your forums check,
ALWAYS check this one as well. It will reveal many
useful tips on managing your account.
And it just occurred to me that we have more access
to management than other websites !
TAGS? Where are they now? I had tagged posts with recipes or
information of use to me and sure hope they haven't disappeared.
june ~
your tagged pages should be under My Info at the top right of any page (just above the banner), but Terry said they're going to phase out tags so we probably won't be able to save any more. Apparently they were hard to navigate.
I also like to save articles, posts, etc., so it's kind of a disappointment to me as well, but I was never able to search other members tags...it used to lock up my computer.
I have a suggestion....while you're changing things.
In the Identification forums, in order to mark your thread as "solved," you must click on the option on the page with the thread open.
When someone offers an ID on one of my "what's-its" I like to thank them or at least comment on their suggestion. That takes me to a page that gives me the option to return to the thread, return to the ID forum, etc.
Currently, I have to return to the thread itself in order to mark it "solved". I think you might have greater success with people closing their solved threads if that option were included on the page with all the other options. That way, we wouldn't have to go back to the thread itself just to mark it "solved."
From a techie standpoint, I don't know if this is even possible. Just a thought!
nutsaboutnature -- Thank you, thank you. I found the tags and will try to find time
to copy those that are important to me before they disappear!
Just popped back in after a week or so and things look really good. The white space is gone and I figured out how to add a little avatar (hope it works). I am probably the red-headed stepchild ... I am on an iMac and using Safari (haven't heard anyone say anything about how that works yet) and things are working fine. Have never used the diaries or journals functions so I am happy as a frog in a mud puddle. Will never leave Dave's .... never, never, never. Good job, you guys.
I'm on a Mac, too, Judy, but I use Chrome, and it's fine for me. I think the font should match the new font at the top of the page, at least for the headings, because the old font looks clunky in comparison now, but it all works well for me. Like you I don't use a lot of the extra features.
I too am on a Mac, using Safari. No real problems for me except the font size. But after reading through this thread, I've been able to correct my problem on the Home page. Oh yes, JudyinGA, I am a redhead, though not the stepchild! Haven't heard/used that term in a while! Cute! :-)

I have happy news to report that I stand corrected regarding the future of tags. We are not phasing them out after all. (We just won't be compiling everyone's tags into that unwieldy page of non-standardized tags that was almost always impossible to load - THAT is what is being phased out.)
Going forward, you'll be able to tag posts and photos and maintain your own list of tagged "stuff." Just give us time to get everything set up :-)
I'm also a red-headed stepchild... red headed from birth and a stepchild from age 6, and I also use a Mac. Safari doesn't work well for me, but Firefox generally does reasonably well. This is my 7th or 8th (maybe 9th?) Mac and it's an old laptop, 2006 vintage. Apple no longer even makes a 17" laptop.
I don't even have IE installed, and refuse to give Google any more access or control to my stuff than they already have. I just HATE it when I visit a page and what shows up as ads are links for some product from a recent search.
Greenhouse_gal, are you talking about the font used for our user names? Yes, it is a little clunky but stands out and that's the purpose, I would suppose. All the other text size is fine, clear and sharp ... and my avatar even worked! LOL.
Tim1, that's one of my favorite expressions. No offense meant. I recently spent a month in your neck of the woods ... Fernandina Beach ... and am giving some thought to moving there. Wherever I am, I will depend on the members at Dave's to keep me informed.
OT, sorry. Judy, I used to take the ferry from my dad's place in Mayport where the shrimp boats come in, over to Fernandina Beach. Lovely country, unless you are a redhead and a mosquito magnet.
