A new look for DG!

(Pam) Warren, CT(Zone 5b)

I like the new look, and on my iPad mini, which I use 95% of the time, there are no problems with the display. It is centered and there are narrow white margins on each side. My only question is, where is the address exchange? I've looked around some, and can't find it. Thanks!

Cleared History and Cache in Firefox and my journal is still cut off. Can't believe that an in-progress make-over was dropped on us unannounced.

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

Yes, a little bit of a heads up would of been nice...BTW, I HATE the new look.

Ottawa, ON(Zone 5a)

I still have to scroll all the time on BOTH of my computers. And the text isn't black enough. Have to zoom in to read it comfortably and I DON'T have eye problems.

Mysore, India(Zone 10a)

Cleared cache. Using GC. No problem here.

Font size.. I said in a post above. You can view whatever size suits the eye. Ctrl+scroll roller.

Murfreesboro, TN(Zone 7a)

Thanks for the positive comments - we are very pleased with the new look to DG.

As with any change, there are bound to be a few bumps and hiccups. We will work with the team to be sure we restore the search buttons and report-an-error buttons and determine why the journal is cutting off on the right side

I will let them know this morning about the address exchange and see if they can give some pointers on why some of you are having to scroll side-to-side (that just shouldn't happen unless you've customized your browser or monitor settings - which is beyond our ability to control or anticipate.)

Jnette, I appreciate your suggestion, but short of telling people to clear their cache when we did the change over, there wasn't much we could have forewarned you about. That's why we chose to go "live" with yesterday with just the simple announcement in this forum.

Barbourville, KY(Zone 7a)

For Chrome users:
"Click the Chrome menu on the browser toolbar. (Three horizontal parallel lines at far right near top)
Select Tools.
Select Clear browsing data.
In the dialog that appears, select the checkboxes for the types of information that you want to remove. (Clear cache is one of the options)
Use the menu at the top to select the amount of data that you want to delete."

So.App.Mtns., United States(Zone 5b)

My screen looks okay this morning, but I do not like the 'new look'. Where's the tab for "Extras"??

Murfreesboro, TN(Zone 7a)

I'm letting them know this morning about the missing extras (including the address exchange).

(Ronnie), PA(Zone 6b)

I can adjust of course but really don't care for the look, kind of dull and plain. Looks a bit like Garden Web too!

Lucketts, VA(Zone 7a)

Is it my imagination, or is navigation faster since the site re-do?

Charlotte, NC(Zone 7b)

So far, everything seems to be working well for me.

I don't care for the "new" look, but will adjust. :)

For those who want to increase the size of their font, hold the control key while tapping the + key.
To make the font smaller, hold the control key while tapping the - key

Well, folks, they aren't going to change it back so we will have to live with it however unhappily that may be. I think they should have done some testing from users before they dumped it on us with all the complications, but that's how we did new things in the good old days. We wanted to please our users.

Can we have a separate thread for suggestions?

I'm working on an Ipad and noticed that the hyperlink just blends in with the rest of the text. Anyone else noticing this?

In plain English, I hate it! I'm too old for all these 'techie' terms...clear this, clear that...I don't have time to fix what you screwed up for me!

Murfreesboro, TN(Zone 7a)

ROBINDOG, the online world is...well, technical. I'm sorry that it is frustrating for you, but clearing your browser's history is pretty simple and it's just good housekeeping, and a bit like tossing old magazines and newspapers, rather than letting them pile up and create a lot of clutter around you. Your cache (history) gets full and bogged down, and a lot of people find it's a simple troubleshooting first step when something doesn't work quite right.

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

I AM SO DONE WITH DAVES GARDEN

Nantucket, MA(Zone 7a)

My history is full of things that I don't want "cleared". How can I selectively clear it?

I still can't find the search box for searching in my journal? How do I now do that or am I blind and am just missing it?

Also when I try to read a sizable post that has a photo or up to 5 (nice feature) accompanying it then the text for that post becomes this long skinny text that runs on forever on the right side that is very strange and almost unreadable as it appears as just a ramble of words rather than as a sentence. Take a look at this post to see what I mean and this is relatively short post compared to many. Post #9574601

Perhaps a Beta test would have been a good idea. Patti

Murfreesboro, TN(Zone 7a)

Patti, it depends on your browser - most of them will allow you to selectively clear your history but we need to know which browser in order to provide you with some tips from that browser's site.

And yes, we did beta test it. Unfortunately, there's no feasible way to test on every possible operating system, browser configuration, monitor size and resolution, and so we did the best we could to test on the most common settings. Some of these anomalies couldn't have been anticipated.

ge1836, I hope you'll change your mind, because these changes are very positive. Everything in our gardens and our lives will eventually be moved, updated, replaced, or otherwise changed.

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

sORRY ,nice sentiment but this is the last straw.
Thankfully I am not as invested in the site ad bbrookrd and its easy to pick up my sunhat and exit.
I'll lurk until this membership runs out next March, but no renewal.

Nantucket, MA(Zone 7a)

I use Mozilla firefox .

Still looking for a search box for the Journal feature as I wanted to see where I currently have all my Heuchera planted so I can plant the ones I got in recently in the spots most needing different ones. Obviously I can just walk around and look but I like looking in my journal for any ideas about location and any changes that I want to make on a regular bases. However, it just started pouring which we needed desperately, so not in a rush now.

Have you looked at the text and photo problem? Not being able to read someones posting is a big issue. That issue is far more important than a new look that solves little for many of your loyal uses who also happen to be just a tad tired, shopworn and certainly dated. I am all of those and maybe a bit grumpy too. Patti

Please make this reply window line up with the message windows above. If I stay scrolled to the right I can see the entire message window (though not who wrote it), but then I have to scroll left to write a response.

Still don't like it. I suspect I'm gone after my subscription expires on July 9. I don't get much gardening info here anymore - there are better, free sites around and most of my "coffee" friends are now on Facebook. Quite frankly, I don't NEED DG anymore and if I don't like it, I won't stay.

Highland Heights, KY(Zone 6a)

Okay, clearing my cache (in Chrome) worked, but I still have to scroll to the right to see the whole screen. I'm at school, so I don't have the luxury of Firefox here, so I don't know what it looks like in Firefox until the weekend. :)

Algonquin, IL(Zone 5a)

Hi Terry and melody,
Forgive me if this has already been asked and I so hate to bring up a problem when you guys are working so hard to better the site.
When I first discovered the new look yesterday I actually found this thread, but no one had commented yet (and I didn't want to be the first). Now there are sooo many. I tried to read through them, but didn't get through all of them.

The main part of my page is the same size as it has been...no white spaces on the sides...but the banner is off-set so I have to scroll to the right to see it all. Also, the side strip with "Todays Articles" is showing only about half unless I scroll.

My page is set to 100%, same as always. I cleared the browser and rebooted...twice. I use IE 8 because we still have XP. I really don't want to bother with Chrome or Firefox at this time for one site (possibly when we replace this computer that will change).

I had no issues with anything fitting the page before the change. Just out of curiosity, is anybody else having the same issue?
Also, (sorry for my stupidity) does a "Screen Shot" mean you use a camera to take a picture of the screen?

As always, THANK YOU...THANK YOU...THANK YOU...you guys are the best!

Highland Heights, KY(Zone 6a)

To take a screen shot, you press the button on your keyboard that says "Print Screen/SySRq". Look past the space next to the F12 key at the top; that's where it is on my keyboard, anyway.

I changed the screen resolution on mine, and all is now well.

Mesilla Park, NM

I have an overlay on my home page also. I've rebooted and deleted the history, but is still there. I'm using an iPad. I used to use Firefox on my desktop. I'm using safari .

Thanks for your help, I also liked the menu and tabs along the top if that matters any. I guess it is a matter go getting used to new things for me.

Greensboro, AL

No this does not work. I have Google Chrome. The menu is missing. The content is way off screen scrolling down to bottom right to find it.

Enterprise, AL(Zone 8b)

Screen shot, that is how you take a screen shot, but then you must open up your photo program or paint or something similar, press Control V to paste it. Then you can send it like a normal photo.

Ottawa, ON(Zone 5a)

If you have a newer computer (mine is about 16 mos old) there is no longer a "print screen" button on the keyboard. I don't know whether there are key strokes that will do the same thing.

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

Worked so perfectly!

Everything looks great now. I am already used to it. I am noticing other changes too, all seem to be better than before!

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

My problems on FF seem to be fixed, but it required me zooming out on my text size which means I have to strain to read the screen. Probably will cut down on my DG time.

Algonquin, IL(Zone 5a)

Thanks...KyWoods and Seedfork for the Screen shot info. Maybe I'll experiment with it.

KyWoods, we like the resolution we're using so changing it for one site isn't really an option, but I appreciate the suggestion.

Mesilla Park, NM

Us oldies...about now. Lol just a little humor..

Working perfectly in the home computer as well with GC even with a different monitor dimension, the 4x3. The one at office is 16x9 ratio. Our names look like 'black'. Can it be changed to a more prominent colour? This is the one we notice most to follow our postings in the thread.

Awww, I like the frogs :-)

Prairieville, LA(Zone 9a)

Great Frog collection...even if they do look a bit grumpy....GRIN

Cleared the cache in Mozilla FireFox and everything fell right into place...and looks clean and streamlined.

I still feel that Daves Garden has some of the best Plant ID info around and most requests for ID are answered in just a couple days....unlike some sites I have been to where a request can sit unanswered for weeks. I have been here for a few years and seen a lot of changes...they all seem to work themselves out, and none of the changes change the camaraderie or the wealth of garden/lifestyle info.

Thanks to Terry for your patience and help

Change is unsettling, but that does not make it bad.

Ottawa, ON(Zone 5a)

The screen looks much better, at least on my newer computer. Haven't looked on the older one today. Now, if you'd just make the text BLACK I'd be very happy. This dark grey stuff is very hard on the eyes.

Algonquin, IL(Zone 5a)

I like the dark gray text. I find black to be too stark and strains both my eyes and my head.

I list on eBay on and off. Whenever I'm using Black text in my listings, I back it off to a Light Black or Dark Gray (then I mix in occasional colored text to break up any monotony and make things pop).

But that's just my opinion.

Now, if I could just get the Banner to center over the rest of the page, I'd be a happy camper.

Albuquerque, NM(Zone 7a)

It's the light green text in menus and lists that I find bothersome
and hard on the eyes. It would be helpful to darken the color
considerably. IMHO

Nantucket, MA(Zone 7a)

I like frogs, but I need to be able to find search box for my journal ?????

Help please. Pretty please, with lots of frogs thrown in. Patti
