Things that make you go "hmmmm" or Say what???!!!! Pt 5

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

we keep out temp set at 58 at all times. on friday we had an oil delivery that was $750 which was a nice reminder why.

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

Very hard on the equipment to bring it all the way back up to the temp

Friend of mine was having problems yesterday with his heat, tells me around 11pm when hubby is already sleeping, couple of things I told him to check and found the problem

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

58?!!!!!!!!!!!!! do you wear coats in the house?

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Really! That is COLD. If you were a NYC landlord you would be in jail. Switch to gas!

Fairfield County, CT(Zone 6b)

I have a programable thermostat and I set it to 59 - 58 at night and all the way up to 66 when I am home. I try to move the top number down a degree each year planning for less money to spend on utilities when I retire.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Cool at night is okay, though that is a bit too cold for me.

Oil or gas, Mem?

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

Is there even gas service out where you live Bill? You def don't want propane

I think propane uses more but cost less per gallon.

Job is OK - I dread tomorrow though as its hard to work in the back receiving rooms when its like 55 degrees & you have your hands in cold water. arghhhhhhhhh

Now the new phone. I used my landline to call the cell phone to activate it. I then called my home landline to make sure I could do it.

Now today my cell makes a noise and I tried to see what was going on. Next the house landline calls and it showed Joy West was calling and it was MY NEW CELL PHONES NUMBER !!!! So I go back to look in the cell to see if I called myself again and somehow (duhhh) got into the messages and there is messages in there from people I dont know. What gives?

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

Takes awhile to get used to it, my hubby still hates his

I did not call my home landline phone with the new cell.

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

well just back from a 3.5 mile power walk, it was 11 out there, not too bad except a coulpe places where there was open space for the wind to hit you.

no coats in he house - i wear a t-shirt or long sleeve t-shirt - no big deal. could thing some of you were not born a 100 years ago you would have never survived :)

neighbors have propane - i am sure this is gas if we wanted it - too many homes have been blown up recently from gas leaks so sticking with oil.

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

If I lived 100 years ago I'd be closer to a fire, it would still be warmer than 58°

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

who goes to get the wood?

Fairfield County, CT(Zone 6b)

Victor - gas and a very high efficiency furnace (Munchkin). I just am trying to be very frugal so it won't be such a shock - my house is smallish and fairly well insulated so the gas bill has never been up to $200. I have a down robe that I wear in the house - it is really warm and I wear socks and soft soled shoes or boots - in case I step on a cat part - that hurts them less. :)

(Ronnie), PA(Zone 6b)

Can't even imagine 58 in my house! We keep our therm at 70 and I still wear a thermal and a sweatshirt on days like today. I won't see my t shirt again till about May!!

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

A little history lesson....the Romans invented a underfloor furnace centuries ago called a hypocaust and the first coal furnace in the US was invented by Dave Lennox in 1885

but, of course, the men would bring in the wood

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Romans invented everything.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

What's up with the men's winter hats theybare making now? Colors, patterns and styles look like women's.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Gotta love all the successes of our Arab spring and N. Africa policy.

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

Hats? I haven't seen any girly ones on men...it's the SCARVES...what the heck???!!!!!

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

I've seen many.

My fifth grader tells me a sixth grader on his bus continued the incredibly STUPID tradition of licking a pole today. He got on the bus with his tongue bleeding. Our future is in good hands.

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

ROTFL, things never change and yet no one has learned to just pour on some warm water to dislodge the tongue?

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

I think he was so embarrassed he did not want to let his family know. Did not go to school nurse either.

S of Lake Ontario, NY(Zone 6a)

We actually turned the heat up to 60 this year and 58 at night. I think you get used to it. I do turn it up to 66 when Leah comes over.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

My wife would leave. She's got the Latina / Carribean blood. The pool is too cold for her when it's 83 or so.

Hillsborough, NC(Zone 7b)

I wear uggs in the house! So toasty! I wear UGGS to garden - best darn gardening shoe ever. Not hot --- snakes can't bite thru, ticks have a long hike too. Comfortable but not sure why since I don't think great support built into the boot.

We keep set temp at 70 day and 59 at night - under down filled blanket -- so OK and better breathing with heat not blowing. Propane gas furnace. Propane does rust the furnace pipes eventually so that is why I don't like -- but it does provide for good heat. Not too expensive because the house is SIP and so solid foam in walls and ceiling-- no attic -- so should be difficult to heat with tall ceiling height --but is not with the SIP construction. Very uniform temps - no air leaks --again because of long panels making up the walls,no split or seams in walls. I think that has helped with heating costs. Set at 70 degrees, the furnace doesn't cycle much because the foam is a good insulator. Having lived in older home in Brooklyn and in Queens and Catskill mts...I remember if there was air leak in house-- no matter what the setting was -- it got cold and it was expensive. Perhaps wha's house is super tight. Setting at 58 doesn't mean the indoor temp is 58. It was 16 degrees here this morn - no sun on house overnight - and this morn with the setting at 59 the indoor temp was still 70. Like living in a big soda cup! My daughter in Pa. Her house 1920 Sears catalogue house - drafty. Uses oil and she keeps thermostat low....... Yet her oil costs could send her to europe each year on nice vacation!

Hillsborough, NC(Zone 7b)

Ha ha. Just read my post..bla..bla..bla..bla...bla! I guess no more 3 cups of coffee for me! Work stress + coffee = C R A Z Y! Sorry ;0)

Interested in a good dish?
Had fresh caught salmon from Costco ( hard to find - mostly Costco has farmed)
Cut it into wee chunks with meat scissor. ( peeled the skin off first -- that was hard!)
Sauteed thin sliced sweet onions in pot in wee bit of olive oil.
Added chopped fresh garlic and watched so not burn.
Stir.. Stir...Onions limp and brown. Garlic brown

Turn fire up high.
Half stick butter in pan
Put the salmon in and fry high and fast so outside browns good inside not cooked tho.
Add 3/4 can low sodium chicken broth
Celery seed, pepper, - whatever spice rings your bell
Cover for few minutes while it simmers and fish cooks.
Add fresh shredded parm cheese

Toss fish cheese broth mix with well drained al dente pasta
Hardly any mess! Quick too.
My hubby loved it and says he will keep me around another year! He wishes I would add a bit of heavy cream -- but still have a wee bit of mortgage and so no cream for him --- yet!

Pss can add small drop of white wine if you want to snazz it up.

I'm glad the topic was cold houses today....it was 55 in my son's kitchen, 60 in the playroom......there are no thermostats in the house.....he has an outdoor furnace that burns wood that heats hot water which circulates under the floors....his furnace is propane, & there are huge dials & gauges in the cellar...nothing I could safely touch! I called...got voice mail...Grant & I found sunshine in the living room where we sat wrapped in blankets....then went to the WARM library for a program....by the time I picked up the girls at the bus stop & got back to the farm it was a toasty 58 in the kitchen ....I cooked dinner & that kept me warm....son's explanation? Not enough wood, & took too long for propane to kick in.....I will NOT babysit again under those conditions......

Funny, Rosie!

Think it's a horrible and dangerous idea to allow women in combat roles. They will regret it.

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

victor, why do you feel so strongly about that? I don't know that I have an opinion.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Two reasons. Frontline combat is much more physically demanding. Second, frontline troops are much more likely to be taken prisoner. If past history is any guide, female prisoners are much more likely to be sexually assaulted.

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

Remember Jessica Lynch being a huge event.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

And let's just say that the men in countries we are most likely to be fighting don't treat women very well to begin with...

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

Ohmigod, if that's not the truth...

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

Yes and if they lower the standards(like they do for police and fire) for women to get in the combat positions...that would even be more dangerous

Hillsborough, NC(Zone 7b)

and (this is my personal concern) ---my son in law is deployed (career army) and he already has fought in Iraq during the invasion and also prior deployment. His best buddy was killed leaving 4 children --he was in his early 30's. They were side by side in two different tanks. What I am getting at is that he knows how devasting injury can be. I know him...if there was a female fighting side by side with him...especially if he knew she had kids at home.... he would not treat her as he was trained to do with regard to combat --- I truly think he would try to protect her beyond what the training indicates he should. Soldiers cover for each other..protect each others backs so to speak, but if all are supposed to run for cover together --or take some kind of strategic action for the good of all..... if there was a female in the mix... I truly believe he would make sure she was safe and was moving ahead of him and would try to offer added protection that was not part of the best practices or recommendations for the situation. I think this would put him at risk and everybody else.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Good point.

I'd like to know who's funding that study!
