so happy to hear you are ok Debbie...
Best/Worse/What did I learn today?Chat with friends
Thank you Thunder & Joyce.
Just got a call from DH. A few closed/flooded roads his way but overall restoring power. Several thousand up there still without power.
HOWEVER, they got a call from "the big boss" as the parent company is in Rhode Island and they got hit really hard. Digging out and
getting back up running....home and business wise is going to be hard. His Iowa trip was cancelled for this week....which is good.
Happy to hear everyone is OK. I slept a few hours. Woke to the good news that the storm did not last a long as some feared it would. Still bad and lots of work to do. Fewer lives lost than could have happened. Giving big thanks for all the people who did evacuate, hunker down and generally behaved sensibly.
While worrying about friends in the path of the storm I remembered an incident that happened when I worked for Red Cross after a hurridane in Texas. A couple insisted that their entire roof needed to be replaced. They had a son who was a roofer and wanted several thousand dollars so he could replace their whole roof. As I walked through their house to look at damage I admired their bedspread and matching curtains. The woman said quickly (too quickly, I realized later). "Oh, we found those at Goodwill." I didn't hink much about it at the time because their income or lack thereof had nothing to do with eligibily for Red Cross assistance.
Because of the cost of a new roof, I had to refer it to a different group for approval. They reported back that they'd approved funds for two "squares" of roof at a cost of less than $100. The man complained a lot. By this time, I'd realized that he was trying to scam Red Cross for a new roof which had been needed before the hurricane came along. I don't mind a little exageration but his whining annoyed. I could have told him directly that they shouldn't have been so greedy. Instead, I said, with deep sympathy (not!!), "It's too bad you thought you needed the whole roof replaced. If you had asked for less than $400, I could have approved it and not had to refer it out." In other words, too bad you were so greedy. Smiling apologetically as I didn't say what they should have suspected I was thinking.
One good thing about this storm. After the way the emergency response people messed up after Katrina they appear to have learned something. I suspect a lot of people in the NY/NJ area realized that they had better do better. Can you imagine what could have happened if some lessons had not been gained from Katrina?
I'll get off my soap box.
Glad to know everyone is OK.
hugs, katie
I should add that this happened in 1970 when $400 went pretty far. kb
Be back in a bit, having internet issues, keep losing it, guess part of the weather..
Did manage to put this together though

Katie I agree, when we had our flood here in 98, there were all kinds of people, not affected at all, that were filing false claims. Some went to jail after all claims were double checked. Pretty sad some are greedy! Some were from Mexico, and not even near the flooded areas!
Just had our power switched back on. Hurrah for Ontario Hydro - wonderful job. Our original estimate of power outage was 24 - 48 hours so I am very pleased. Not putting anything away as power outages could happen again tomorrow.
Have the dizzies very badly this last week so have not been on line. Going to dentist again tomorrow. *Sigh* A neighbour is driving me as I cannot take a chance.
Hope all is well with everyone. I have not been online much but wanted to check to make sure everyone was OK.
Dianne
Glad to hear your OK from the storm Dianne, why are you dizzy? Make sure you go have it checked out please? Don't envy you going to the dentist again! Hope this will be over for you soon!
She has the dizzies from the infection in her mouth I think she said on another thread. Scary stuff Dianne! Stay safe.
Dianne, do hope your appointment tomorrow brings an end to this infection..really am sorry you've been so unwell.
Crissy, was nice opening the thread and seeing your posts.
Suzanne just called to check if I made it home ok..torrential rain, had to stop a couple of times as you couldn't see..good news is as I got closer to home it got lighter.
So glad the worst of Sandy is OVER and there wasn't damage that isn't fixable. On the "plus" side, this will give work to some who haven't been working, I'm sure.
Happy dance that all our sistahs here have survived yet another bad storm!
Good that Honee's eye surgery is done, and went well.
Dianne - please check out that dizziness! Must have been scary to lose your power...... cut off! Glad it didn't last long!
Betty -do allow the boys to do these things for you, even if you have to nag a bit and wait.......
Katie - you're right - "lesson learned"! You'd think, in this day & age, that they would have been better prepared years ago......and not have to learn from Katrina!
Those ID 10 T people are just plain ignorant! They put others at risk when they need to be rescued......
oops, cross-posted re: dizziness
Guess who just came and left..troops
Greg said he worked till 8:30 last night, told him a call would have been nice.
got the , who took it down?? Told him an elf
Just on their way to Midland , Kyle getting snow tires for his jeep, his grandfather gave him $500 towards them..guess making up for snowmobile he gave Noah a few weeks ago. Spoilt kids
Asked if I wanted to go for supper, nope fine on the couch, just took a pain killer, in my Jammie's and quite happy where I am
Betty don't you have bingo tonight?
Stay warm and rest!!! I hope everyone is snuggled in and relaxing tonight.
Yes, Ann came over, wish we would at least come close but not! Chatted a lot though..
Still raining, gee whiz, looks so depressing out there in the back yard..sooo wish I could fine some kids who would rake.
Bet all little kiddies are excited for Halloween tomorrow and not likely will they sleep
It's going to be very bitterly cold for Hallowe'en tomorrow...... and snowy. Was supposed to be plus 10c, but now going to be a high of minus 5 c........ coldest day of the week. Figures, doesn't it? Calgary is so changeable, and will be in the double digits on Sunday plus 11..... or higher.
Calgary's like that - very up and down weather-wise.
Went to Champions (gov't job help agency for disabled), and then to a funeral in the aft.
Tomorrow a friend is coming by for tea.
I got a call from employment agency about a perm job in aviation, same area of city as I live. She's forwarding my resume to them tomorrow, and I should hear mid-next week if I get an interview.
It's doing my preferred job - Executive Assistant.
Happy Halloween
Like you Susan weather will not be the best for the kiddies but am sure it will not dampen the spirit of the young..
Slow moving this morning, maybe I can be an old hag today.
Susan bet of luck with regards to getting a job in your field..never daw anyone get jobs like you do..here is hoping you get the interview.
Wonder how Bev and Shirley are doing?
Time to get a move on

Christmas stocking swap interest. Come and check it out!
Didn't get as cold as predicted last night but still a little nippy outside. No complaints. Need to go to grocery as I ran out of eggs to make the cakes I need to today. Kim has 2 large cake orders due Friday and Saturday so I will do the baking; she does the rest. One is to be a dolphin for a child's birthday. This should be interesting!!!!
Now you will have to post a photo of the cakes when finished Marion. How is your mom doing, fever down? If it's not sunny for you to be outside then you can play at sewing..
Will do Betty. She make the candy dolphins that go around the cake last night.......cute but to sweet for my taste.
Mom's fever is down but she is very lethargic, not eating very much and all in all just not good. The constant UTIs have really been devastating to her system. She is only going about 10 days now between infections. Plans are in the works to take her back to where she lived with my sister on the 10th of November. We are just hoping she is able to make the trip as it is an hour each way. In short, her body is just exhausted.
Thanks for asking.
Sorry to hear she's going through such a terrible time..she has put up a good fight, can only do that for so long. Hard for you as a family to watch her fail..
Susan bet of luck with regards to getting a job in your field..never saw anyone get jobs like you do..
Marion - Praying very hard for your mom & family. UTIs are so hard on the family, let alone the patient....God bless you all!
I just learned that the person who took over my job 2 years ago (CLS) and then gave her notice 2 weeks later, has viewed my profile on LinkedIn........
Not sure how I feel about that, but apparently she's not working and looking for work.
I was going to send her an "INMail" through LinkedIN but I don't have the upgrade to the site to do that.
I was going to send a "pleasant chat" to her. When I found that she'd left the position and moved to Toronto, I felt betrayed, then thought "God has a reason for doing this, and I'm not going to question it, because she's one of God's Kids too........supposedly this was to happen".
Drats Judy, you made me look bad (Lol)
I'd better go in the back shed, know she's hanging around in there and hang her on front door..know there is a large pumpkin sitting out on a shelf..what's wrong with me this year??? Queen of decorating has now stopped decorating.
Will set out the electronic lighting system I picked up in Frankenmuth
Raining here, singing 'let it rain/let it rain' so by 5:30 the sky will have emptied.
Not too late Betty...didnt do a whole lot of decorating this year...
Next year ill try and put them out earlier..lol. truth is almost forgot this year!!
Pumpkins just got carved last night.
Sure hope it stop raining for the lil ones.

BOO on the sil for taki.g your props!!
OOK Have to dash!! Doc appt for his knee.
Betty, were still waiting to hear from the guy on the house! They didnt want to counter...so we came back with if they dont want to then we want take off the credit for the ac. And they buy as is. Well see...funny thing is they live on the next block over...knows Jake and they looked at the Magnolia house!! So they know all the work that has gone into both...cross fingers...
Jakes window and door.
Judy - here's hoping they will "come across" and buy your house!!
Betty - we haven't decorated for years, simply because it isn't worth it for 2 - 3 Trick or Treaters.
'sides.....all the candy is eaten by Bob anyway lol
Waving...finished my crafts and all of a sudden I got busy lol
will be back and gab (to above posts) while waiting for trick or treaters
did you happen to notice that there are no more ad banners at the right, on the home page?
Great, eh?
Hello To All !
Happy Halloween !
(HUGS)
Mary
No trick or treaters here.....sad! :-(
For about 20 years living here....we would get between 300 & 400 kids. It was a MOB. We had the sheriffs on horseback to control everything.
Now the last two years, we have had hardly any. Last year maybe 20.....this year about 60.
Susan, I have not had ad banners for quite sometime, you can turn them off.
Sorry to hear about the trick or treaters not showing up!
I thought the ad banners on the side were locked in. For some reason today they disappeared...... weird....!!
Marion - I also am sad you didn't get any trick or treaters.........
Hmmmm... re: no Trick or Treaters....
maybe start serving Red Kool Aid ?
LOL... No really we don't have many either. I think for safety's sake... folks are doing more of the Halloween Parties and Church events...so many businesses and Malls are doing events too.... Told my neighbors today we'd have to do something big next year to get the "Tourists back"....seemed like we had way more trick or treaters when my kids were younger.....
I think that is the problem....the kids are growing up and there are no new families in the neighborhood. We are the "new people" on the block....and been here 22 years.
Thought I would move us over..
