Sweet Interruptions #248

TORRINGTON, AB(Zone 3b)

lol

cooking deer tonight... hmmm its either very very gamey or it rotten ? no idea . I have not cooked game in 12 yrs sooooo. it has been in the freezer for 8 months i don't see any freezer burn nor a foul smell ? nor any discoloration but the cooking smell well..... i thnk its just gamey. I did a Monte Buerre sauce with it,
so lets hope for the best as i don't get sick
if i don't post tomorrow morning ..... well...... ?

TORRINGTON, AB(Zone 3b)

oh Sue, from what you're saying about 8 mo in the freezer it shouldn't be "bad" as far meat goes.
It could very well be "gamey" but I can't say as I've never cooked deer.
How long after killing was it dressed and frozen?

don't know really

TORRINGTON, AB(Zone 3b)

IF there's an issue, I'm thinking that would be the cause, not the 8 months in the freezer. After all, you didn't have a breakdown of the freezing unit did you - where it thawed and re-froze? If not, then I'd say you're pretty good!

TabacVille, NC(Zone 7a)

Sue, I always marinate my deer in red wine and lots of garlic.
That would take care of the gamey taste. But when given fresh game, I'd 'stuff' it and season it first before freezing. Learn that from the Cajuns.

Susan, I'd love to try elk meat. Have you? I have heard it's good.

ALL look so good in the pics. Thanks LK. I'm so glad the weather co-operated.

Wouldn't it be more prudent if Kim were to take off tomorrow. Dealing with kids and pain.. not a good combination!
Marion, you're just too stubborn to succumb to illness long!! Lol!! Bless you dear!

Didn't take a pic of the pomegranates nor persimmons today, Susan. But had one overly ripe American one.. so good.

Survivor's on.. going to try to finish a book after this and prayers.
Good night sistahs.

TORRINGTON, AB(Zone 3b)

No, I've never tried elk meat.... goose, rabbit, and fish is as "gamey" as I've gotten lol

(Linda Kay) Amarill, TX(Zone 7a)

Elk meat is good, and if you have any meat that is gamey, Mom used to soak it in milk, buttermilk if she had it for a few hours.

TabacVille, NC(Zone 7a)

Gosh LK. That brings to mind, nothing as gamey as goat and lamb.
You said buttermilk is good.. what a coincidence.. we like to leave mutton or lamb cuts in yoghurt for a few hours before cooking.
So, there's some truth to the buttermilk. I'll try that one!

Yes I'm up... watching the tv watch me!!

TORRINGTON, AB(Zone 3b)

I'm watching TV too - Blood & Steel - the story about the Titanic. I've never seen the series before. It's interesting what they do with artistic license........ wonder how "true to life" it is.....

(Linda Kay) Amarill, TX(Zone 7a)

TV is off here, just about to say goodnight to all and get some sleep! Sweet dreams everyone!

(Pegi) Norwalk, CA(Zone 10b)

I had Stacey on my mind for a few days, wondering how the pregnancy was going. Thanks for the infor, so happy she is having her girl and everything is progressing well. I remember when my second baby was born and they told me it was a boy I asked them if they were sure. LOL I just figured I'd have a boy first and the second would be a girl, no way to tell in those days. Still miss having a girl, but at times I'm so glad I didn't.

Just heard that a couple we know living in Iowa will be having venison. He went out hunting and got his doe, and so shocked because his heart is only working 28%. Wow, the working part must be pretty strong.

TORRINGTON, AB(Zone 3b)

Only 28%? I'm surprised he's out hunting at all!!! I'm glad I don't know what that's like........ he must be a very determined person!!

good morning
well so far so good. LOL
i will try butter milk in the next time i c ook it. still experimenting .
i love lamb
well ms. savannah is sick ( so she says ) so its me and her today
going to hopefully get them crocus in the garden ! and the garlic planted too.

(Linda Kay) Amarill, TX(Zone 7a)

Sounds like my Dad, he said years ago, he would would die, doing what he loves doing, and that is hunting or fishing. Sure wish he could get out to do those things now.

Morning everyone!

(Linda Kay) Amarill, TX(Zone 7a)

Sorry to hear she is not feeling well today. Hope it is not raining, so you can get some things planted.

(Marion) Havana, FL(Zone 8b)

Mom always soaked venison in buttermilk before cooking also. I noticed my DIL does the same.

Kim is at work, doing okay so far..still sore but was missing her students to much. I am so happy she has some really great kids this year that she actually looks forward to going to work. Such a nice change.

Franklin, OH(Zone 6a)

When is school over for her, Maid M? I know you said you'd wait for that to chose the date for the gathering. I'm thinking of doing another Florida trip this winter. Be nice if we could meet up. ^_^ Not like we haven't tried before!!!!!

(Marion) Havana, FL(Zone 8b)

She finishes school somewhere around the 24th of May. However, we have been discussing having the get together in April depending on everyone's thoughts and schedules........nicer weather for the northern people. Of course, nothing to say we can't do 2 is there? LOL

Keep me posted and we will certainly give it a good try!!!!! Would love to met up and visit with you!

Victoria Harbour, ON

Anxious for the dates as well..I'll be in Florida few weeks over Christmas and likely in March..gee that will be 3 trips in not many months

(Marion) Havana, FL(Zone 8b)

Well please post what is agreeable for dates.

The reason I was waiting until Kim was out of school is she is up at 5am. To be more honest and accurate: I wouldn't want anyone to meet her the last week she is finishing work! Talk about crabby....still love her but it does stress her out really bad. She wants to be able to finally put faces with names and join us for fun and laughter.

TabacVille, NC(Zone 7a)

Pegi, that guy is taking risks ain't he? All for game?
There's this hunter friend of ex that was told to cut back on his hunting, he didn't listen. But he drowned in a boat accident. Guess when it's time for you to go.. it can be in any fashion. Still I won't tempt it!

Sad that your dad can't enjoy the sports any longer LK. I'm sure he got good memories of that. You're going to Marion's aren't you?

Good for you Sue!!! I'm sure it tastes good. Poor Savannah. Ms. Jaye is sending kisses to you dear, wishing you'll get well soon.

Any time is good for me Marion. I'm really hoping that Kel will drive me down there, so we'd stop at Sis Kathy's first.
If not, I'll just fly down to B'ham.. and hoping Sis Kathy would join the party.

(Linda Kay) Amarill, TX(Zone 7a)

I will go with what you choose marion, don't want to come when your busy.

(Marion) Havana, FL(Zone 8b)

It isn't me being busy.....just Kim being crabby. LOL

Of course, once the dungeon is finished (should be a lots closer this coming week) it doesn't matter when people come as I will have a guest/craft suite available.

TabacVille, NC(Zone 7a)

LK, won't you be going to the Ink Masters' convention in March?
Unless it's held in Tx. every year.

Ha!! Don't want her to be more "crabbier" Marion. But then we all have menopausal moments in this group!! Lolol!!

I wish I could afford to rent a cabin in the mountains... sure would be nice to hold a sistahs retreat.

(Marion) Havana, FL(Zone 8b)

Funny you should mention cabins in the mountains Jaye. What if we all chipped in and rented one of the larger cabins? Kim and I rented one the first week of April 2005, it slept 6 and had a hot tub to boot!!! I don't think it would be so unreasonable if we all shared the cost/food. We were at Pigeon Forge.

TabacVille, NC(Zone 7a)

That sounds GRAND Marion. Moreover it's less driving distance for us!!

TabacVille, NC(Zone 7a)

Starting in late fall through winter, the rental prices are slashed tremendously! That's something to think about. Colors would be so beautiful in the fall.

Vacation homes here too offer huge discounts off season, but who wants to walk along the beach when it's too cold?

(Linda Kay) Amarill, TX(Zone 7a)

No ink masters here Jaye, I leave that to my boys! Cabin in the mountains sounds nice too!

(Cindy) Auburn, CA(Zone 10a)

Thought I'd share a little family history. This gold nugget was mined by my grand father's grand father, weighing 13.8 pounds, is the largest mass of gold remaining intact found during the gold rush era. A rare form of crystalline gold once part of a larger deposit of quartz, discovered in August of 1864 in the stream of the middle fork of the American River. The nugget was never cut or melted, but toured the world. It's now in a musem in Mariposa

(Linda Kay) Amarill, TX(Zone 7a)

Wow, that is a nice nugget for sure! Hope the museum paid fair prices for it!

TORRINGTON, AB(Zone 3b)

13.8 lbs!! wow!

Marion - if you're talking about renting a cabin, would it be in your neck of the woods, or in the middle between the majority of people coming? Like Alabama so northern & southern (and easterly) travellers could meet there?!?!

started getting all the fixin's for caramel apples for our party this sunday and well.... i forgot to take out the apples from the fridge uuuhg. hopefully they warm up to room temp before bed time ?
i tried one to see how it would go but it didn't :( cold apple hot caramel don't work :(

TabacVille, NC(Zone 7a)

That's amazing Cindy. Did your great great great grandfather mined it in California? That should be in the Smithsonian Institute.

Caramel apples!! That will be a treat Sue! It's a wonder why our church never thought of that for homecoming dinners.
How's Savannah?

Susan, if this mountain retreat could be done maybe in 2015, there's a possibity of you coming?

(Cindy) Auburn, CA(Zone 10a)

Yes he did Jaye, as matter of fact in the town where my mother was born. I guess the family needed money...it was sold to a fella from Paris. You can read about the nugget...it's called The Fricot Nugget. After I learn to ride my motorcycle (like really well, lol) I want to go to the museum where it is being displayed. Also about a month ago the museum was robbed, but they didn't get the nugget, whew!!!

(Cindy) Auburn, CA(Zone 10a)

Here is a short story about it

Some more "new" learning material, thanks to Cindy. I'm still so amazed I can look up just anything on the computer. Today's kids just take all this technology for granted.

TORRINGTON, AB(Zone 3b)

Jaye - mountain retreat in 2015? First I've heard about it...... Which mountain range????

Cindy - wow - 13 lbs of gold.....that is quite the family history, and SO glad the nugget wasn't stolen in the heist!!

TabacVille, NC(Zone 7a)

Cindy, at today's market value, that "nugget" will fetch a nice three hundred thousand dollars!! It should be renamed the Fricot-Davis Nugget. Interesting that it remained undiscovered in the bank for so many years!! I sure would love to see that gem.
Take care of that left thumb.

Hi Pegi. There's this FB friend of mine who's always posting what she found on Google Facts. Yep, technology has certainly broaden our knowledge horizon. Except that some of them are truly useless info!

(Marion) Havana, FL(Zone 8b)

The subject of renting a cottage in the mountains just came up today and basically we are just throwing some thoughts around. No mountains around here with cottage so it would have to be further north. LOL Could take you to a large sand dune and tell you it is a mountain.

Neat story Cindy.
