Susan, one thing to remember with them....without power, their temps are REALLY HOT down there and muggy. Thats bad for the elderly, poor health and very young.

The kids and i actually enjoy the power out....if not sweltering....so you are right. BUT get back to the "olden days" and have to talk and play board games.

TORRINGTON, AB(Zone 3b)

oh oh....... never thought they'd have time to create a letter to send to all the tenants! BUT, I'm surprised the tenants don't have the instructions to leave and go to a Muster Point...... I know you moved your offices in their just a short while ago (One year?) - didn't you get an info package from the management re: health and safety?
As for the letter, maybe they already had a template and just had to change the date, which begs the question - has this happened before, and why didn't every one of the tenants know?

Lyndonville, NY

Betty just remember, that alarm goes off....there are HOT policemen and firemen down there.....and you better check it out!!!

TORRINGTON, AB(Zone 3b)

ah yes...... the HEAT for young and elderly. That's why, in Winnipeg when the power was out in the summer we had them take "sitz baths" to bring their temps down. Some elderly almost lived in the bathtubs, and the hospitals were kept busy. Temps would get to 104F or higher, in the summertime, in Winnipeg........

TORRINGTON, AB(Zone 3b)

LOL Debbie - we keep cross-posting!

Victoria Harbour, ON

Sure do miss those days when family would get together and we'd play cards, games and TALKED..too much hi tech these days..lordy the family come and all are sitting with telephones-ipads etc. This is putting an end to social skills for sure.

Another hour, what a long day..feeling odd today mentally.

Victoria Harbour, ON

Debbie, forgot to say I'M THROUGH WITH YOUNG MEN..lordy my body is still hurting..leave the police and firemen for you gals

TORRINGTON, AB(Zone 3b)

Betty - getting together like this is why Bob & I go camping - no TV or anything else to distract us from being Together! We talk, play cards, and go for walks. Never mind the fact that we collaborate on packing for the camp, set up/take down the site, and spend 2 1/2 hours each way talking too. It's a wonderful way to spend quality time together.
S'funny (or maybe not) but I feel that I would be the first to go and I want to spend time with my DH. He's got a day off today, and we're spending some time together today, too.
I've booked a tour of a tiny local brewery and we just have to call to make the appointment. Not to mention the B&B we're going to for our Anniversary in October (Thanksgiving long w/e). We may not have a lot of $$ but to spend time with my DH is my joy. I want to make memories for both of us.

Victoria Harbour, ON

Did a lot of that as well Susan but things are different in this generation, especially if you've young ones and grandchildren you are with often.

Off topic

Watching reports of the storm this morning there was a talk show, believe it's in Australia, if passed , will ban smoking to the entire generation thereafter..imagine

http://chealth.canoe.ca/channel_health_news_details.asp?news_id=33019&news_channel_id=12&channel_id=12

TORRINGTON, AB(Zone 3b)

That's a great thought/idea Betty - banning smoking to an entire new generation - will keep people healthier. I can just hear the conversation in about 50 years or so "Why would our grandparents stink up the air and clog their bodies with such toxins?" And I imagine there would be other toxins that would no longer be available!

I'm playing with my free I-Pod (1st generation)............ it's one that someone threw away in Bob's truck bed......
I'm a little lost with it, but know that I would need WiFi to get on the 'net. Eventually I will get a WiFi capable router for my computer, and then I can use my laptop (given to me for free in Feb!!), and the free IPod........
Bob & I are very lucky in these kinds of things.......... good thing, cuz we have terrible luck in other things LOL LOL

Victoria Harbour, ON

I'm terrible with anything hi tech..Jeff gave me a nice camera, Kyle was here the other night teaching and setting up..took a few photo's, downloaded but decided i would keep using the one I already have..don't have the interest in learning I guess

Susan, to me you seem the type of gal who would sit for hours and read the manual (can download) line by line and have the operation of it down-pat.soon we will need a suitcase to carry all our electricals.

Baton Rouge, LA

Debbie - I think you better go help Betty check on those firemen !

I think we are supposed to have the eye of the storm come through Baton Rouge very soon. Hard Heavy Rains and Winds...so far... Belle is fit to be tied !

Yes - had good memories of hurricane Fred when I was 12? We played bridge all night by candlelight. Dad always said we'd "Go down with the ship" LOL...

I'm doubting that Jean has power back... SO many are out... yes it's cooler than normal for us but still Hot and Humid... here in our neighborhood we've been VERY Lucky....

Mary

Victoria Harbour, ON

praying Mary that the worry will soon be over!! Wonder how the French quarter fared?

Guess it was a long day waiting for Isaac. Was Lance and Ds home as well?

TORRINGTON, AB(Zone 3b)

Betty - re: reading the manual....... to some extent you're right - I will read the instructions, Not the schematics lol
I also go to the FAQs online.
On Monday (after weeks of this happening) I called Fido and got a new cell phone ordered. My current cell (which I've only had since June/11) keeps giving me a "No Network Coverage" and "Call Not Allowed" when trying to dial a phone in the Same Room! I couldn't call Bob (we are on the same plan), and couldn't even call Fido's info (411)!! It's out of warranty (of course), and I have to order a new phone!! Better to order it on from the call center, cuz the store would charge a $25 admin fee if I picked it up.
Two days later I finally got the UPS track # and it doesn't work yet, as UPS has picked it up, but not entered it on their system. Supposed to be 2-3 days delivery, which would be tomorrow, right? I think it's coming from Montreal.............. siiiiiiiiiiigh The fellow on the phone said he's giving me the same contract $$ (only now it's a 2 year plan and I didn't have a plan before). Seems to me like the cheapie phones they give you for $0 down are scheduled to "die" right after the warranty is done, then you have to pay $$ to get your service back.............

Baton Rouge, LA

Hey Betty -
Saw that the power was back on in the Garden District.... maybe you could check that webcam again soon... We are all under a curfew.
Yes - this has been the longest wait... we are now in the eye so it's a bit calmer. No one really allowed out... so yes Lance and DS home all day.

Can't believe witchy poo has called us in to work tomorrow. All schools are closed till Tuesday.

Susan is Fido the phone co?

We've been lucky but it's not all over yet...
(HUGS)
Mary

TORRINGTON, AB(Zone 3b)

Fido is our cell phone provider.

In the eye of the storm, Mary?!?! That means you have about the same as you just went through, to go through again....
I can't believe she called you in to work!! With the storm going to "kick in" again, you shouldn't be leaving the house when it does........

Baton Rouge, LA

You are so right Susan ! After the eye one would think we are 50% through it... but it has lightened up a bit they say... (in the eye I'm not hearing much at all of course)

To cute "Fido"... hope you get the phone thing figured out ... one would think you could call someone in the same room.

I did hear some "new" hurricane advice : Turn off the GPS on your cell phone to save battery time. I'll have to remember that one...

Still up in the air about Florida. I have no idea what the "World" looks like after this thing... no time to drive around the neighborhood at daylight since I have to be in at 830am...

Hugs
Mary

TORRINGTON, AB(Zone 3b)

re: my cell phone - apparently the internal antenna is broken. How that happened I don't know. I haven't dropped it or anything..........
Apparently the new phone was shipped today, and I spoke to them on Monday early afternoon........ sure were taking their time, when I'm stuck without being able to call Bob at work. Land line to cell costs $, but we can call cell-to-cell for free cuz we're on the same plan.......

Victoria Harbour, ON

Thought I'd check in, so glad to see you are still posting Mary..in the eye of the storm, thought that would be the worse of the storm?? If Isaac is moving as slow as they say isn't the eye in the center and tomorrow will be as bad? Great your power didnt go out!
Think I'd be calling in sick and not taking a chance..glad family is with you..will anxiously await news of Jean...

Susan, never dealt with Fido..always Rogers or Bell..I have a blackberry and only buy the pay as you go $10 a month and might use it once or twice during the month..not a phone person at all. Lol. Hope it arrives as schedules..hate signing any kind of contract

Been reaming all night long, was dreaming my brother
Bernie was killed, managed to wake myself out of it, almost hate to do back to sleep..

Dianne, you up?

Verona, ON

Yep I was up Betty. Didn't fall asleep until after 6 am was up by 7:15. I say this with a laugh but what am I going to do - I am hungry all of the time now and have fallen back into the no sleep zone. Going to buy some more Chapman's Black Cherry Ice Cream is what I am going to do. It got me through the last few weeks so I'll stick with what I know. Besides it tastes marvelous!!!

No rain here but it feels like it could any time.

Make sure you all do something nice for yourself

Victoria Harbour, ON

well Dianne your solution of Black Cherry ice cream just might do the trick..maybe I'll pick some up as black cherry is one of my favorites.Thought weather for your and Thea's area would be much like mine for the weekend, sunshine/sunshine.. wish you lived closer, you could drive over to Meaford with me just to fill in a day.

With all the talk of MIL's, my morning word from Joel Olsteen reminded me to be me and to heck with MIL's expectations

thought I'd post:

I read a report from a nurse who takes care of people who are close to death. She asked hundreds of patients in the last twelve weeks of their life what their biggest regret was. The number one regret reported was, “I wish I had been true to who I was and not just lived to meet the expectations of others.”
How many people today are not being true to who God created them to be simply because they are afraid they’re going to disappoint somebody? They’re afraid they may fall out of someone else’s good grace. They worry about not being accepted into a certain group. I say this respectfully, but you cannot live trying to be who your parents want you to be, or who your boss wants you to be, or who your friends want you to be. You’ve got to stay true to who God has called you to be.
Today, make the decision to live life with no regrets. Surrender yourself wholeheartedly to who God created you to be. Let Him mold and shape your character. Let Him order your steps. As you submit your ways to Him, He will shine down on you, and you will live the fulfilled, abundant life He has prepared for you!

Copied and printed out to hang up in my room!!! Thank you Betty. I really must sign up for his daily email. I have copied and printed out several that you have posted.....

Glenview, IL

Prairieville, LA(Zone 9a)

Now is the time for all good men to clean up their wife's garden....LOL and tear down the trashed greenhouse...All is okay here. The power came back on a few minutes ago so.....Let the Cleaning begin....grin

Thumbnail by themoonhowl
(Marion) Havana, FL(Zone 8b)

Jean, so glad to hear you have power again but not so happy to know your greenhouse got trashed. Be safe please.

Victoria Harbour, ON

Jean, ahhh sorry you lost your greenhouse, but it can be replace and you and yours cannot!!! Has the rain passed you by, are you able to get out today??? Watched the news but not much on Isaac up here, was there a tremendous amount of damage?? Will you be replacing it maybe with a bigger one? Big sigh of relief here..would image from Mary's last post that she is at work this morning, that old whitchipoo should have grabbed a broom and rode out with the storm rather than call her workers in!!!!

Judy/Judy for some reason I thought the Judy that LindaKay was gabbing about was her SIL, NOT you my darlin...now how did that come about? Know you thought you would take a train/bus to meet up with us..omg another gathering, too excited for words!

Don't know how you didn't cave and tell Alissa she could stay until she found a job and not live in her car..she must have REALLY overstayed her welcome. Did the house get on the market, any lookers, maybe a buyer?? Will be nice you getting a new computer, Thunder is also getting one, excited with that.

Now what could your new toy be..shall we all guess?
I say 'car'

Yes, do miss Sailor and glad many of you got to meet her..she was a gentle dog..girls painting yesterday said they didn't know how many times they thought, she'll be wanting out and needs a treat..forget who I told about putting her down and was reminded she was just a dog, time to do it!! Really? well, they don't know about how much comfort these furries give us...Sailor always listened about my day .. insensitive people..

Prairieville, LA(Zone 9a)

I have a second greenhouse...just needs to be recovered as wind tore off the sheeting. life is good here...we are having intermittent bands of showers and still strong breezes, but the worst is over and now the cleaning up...both inside and out begins. Walking through seas of pet hair...3 long-hair cats and 2 dogs inside for 2 days....whole lotta shedding going on...grin

Lyndonville, NY

If anyone of my friends ever said ANY of my pets was "just a dog or just a cat" would no longer be welcome in my life. That person is very insensitive and hasn't a clue....and a cold heart.

Victoria Harbour, ON

Must be a wonderful feeling to walk outside Jean, look around and know everything you love is still in one piece..saw a show where several individuals from Katrina lost everything, were rebuilding and my first thought was just how brave they were and couldn't even comprehend what they must be feeling to possibly have everything taken from Isaac again, thankfully most fared well.

Debbie, was a lady at the hairdresser's when I got my perm!!! no need to gab further with her..Joanne who is my hairdresser just looked at her, shook her head..she has a dog that she just had hip surgery done on so realizes what a great loss it is losing a furry

How are you doing today?

TORRINGTON, AB(Zone 3b)

oh Betty - "just a dog"??????????? That's very insensitive of them. How could anyone say that about a member of the family? Yes, she was a furry, and not "fruit of your loins" but she was a Member Of Your Household!! and a very attentive one at that - some people aren't as attentive as a furry is.......

Jean - glad you have another greenhouse - I agree with Betty that GHs can be replaced, but humans can't, so am very glad to hear no one's hurt.

Prairieville, LA(Zone 9a)

We tend to operate on "In the greater scheme of things"way of looking at the world. Folks 60 miles south of us have 8+ feet of water in their homes...we don't. Tornadoes ripped through some areas...none here. We have power again...some folks won't for days, maybe weeks. We had a generator...some folks sat in the dark. I have always looked at the "glass half full or half empty" premise as it doesn't matter...I'm probably gonna be the one to have to wash the darn glass anyway....GRIN

Thanks to you all for your concern and good thoughts. please keep the folks in Isaac's wake, and those just beginning to see this storm in your thoughts and prayers.

hugs to you all,
Jean

TORRINGTON, AB(Zone 3b)

((((((Jean))))) I just know you & I are kindred spirits! I prefer to look on the bright side too. And I always "pick myself up, dust myself off, and get on with life" I'm just plain "high on life and people".
Sure I get "knocks" just like everyone else, but that makes us all sisters and brothers under-the-skin, right?
I've had people say I'm "too perky"......... like.......that's a problem? LOL

Prairieville, LA(Zone 9a)

Susan, Dear, no one has ever called me perky...but it isn't a bad thing at all. Grin...I am just rather pragmatic about things...worrying over what i can do NOTHING about has just always seemed counter-productive and a waste of personal resources to me. You just do what you can, as you can for as long as you can, then step back, regroup and start again. Not to say I don't get impatient, because patience has never been my long suit...but just that sometimes you have to readjust your thinking and your goals.

Franklin, OH(Zone 6a)

My dad always said you choose how your day is going to go.....you can greet it with a smile or you can greet it with a frown.....he was such a great guy...

JUDY! I thought it was LK's sis/sil, too! YAY! My lil injun! ^_^

Betty, I know you asked me a question about Jungle Jim's a while ago and I forgot to answer. Yes, is the answer, that is where we went to the huge grocery store.

I also got your message about a set of large mushrooms, now I'll have to take some pictures so you can tell me what kind you want!

Another kitten is going to die. It is the runt, and Neeky won't nurse her and I can't get her to take any replacement kitten milk with the dropper either. There is another weak one, but she is taking the replacement, and she is looking better, so I think she'll pull through. The other 3 are strong and into everything. It's so sad watching this little one. I held her for over an hour thinking she'd go at any moment, but she didn't. Bill is holding her now. Poor baby. She just doesn't have the strength to eat now. She hasn't been in our lives long, but you get attached so quickly. I haven't even named any of them for fear that I won't want to give them away or re-home them to the shelter. It sure is hard when you get to know their personalities though.

Lyndonville, NY

DH just called on his break. Said he has to work Saturday morning (reunion day). SO I said, well, since you are on call anyway....I was going to suggest we take
two cars in case one of us has to leave early. He said "I was going to suggest that if you need to bolt". YEP, he knows.

Betty, I have my perm back also....Judy said she missed my curls when I was up there....so saved a bit to get one. Makes me feel better. lol

Judy, so happy you popped in. Woman, you are SO busy!!! OHHHH Sending you a surprise...its on order! Will be a couple weeks but I saw and had to get for you! Something we both love!

Another DG'er posting on FB there is a big danger of a dam bursting that will flood area 50 to 60,000 live. Ya'll stay safe!!!

Debbie

TORRINGTON, AB(Zone 3b)

Jean - I'm pragmatic as well....... used to work for Memorial Gardens, selling plots and funeral arrangements.
I can't be bothered worrying about those things I can do nothing about - when my ex & I split up, I refused to get maintenance, cuz 6 months of the year he wouldn't be able to pay it (he's a truck driver) and I'd be wasting my time chasing him down to No Purpose. I released that part of my life to Move On. I'm glad I did, too!

Joyce........ it must be terribly had to watch a little kitty die, and to know the 2nd one is going too...... wel, I can't imagine what you're going through to keep one. I understand not naming them...... it would make it more difficult.
My "Baby" was one of a litter born to the mother we had in our house, so I watched them all being born (7). We kept her, as she was the runt of the litter, and had to put her "down" in July. I still look for her in the house - she was 11 years old.

Victoria Harbour, ON

Perky isn't bad...don't let anyone tell you it is..anyone I travel with say I'm much too cheerful early mornings..why not, I was able to open my eyes and able to say 'thank you Lord for another upcoming day!'

Oddest thing and I know you will think I've lost it but last night when I said my prayers, I told the Lord that there are many people on earth who give such value to mankind, that I'd gladly give up my time to pass it on to them' wonder if that's why I was dreaming of death?? anyway, I'm with all of you, doesn't help worrying from morning till night, best take it in stride and deal with it..I try, not always can I but the majority of time I can..came through some pretty tough times thinking that way so not doing me any harm..

Joyce..want a set of the ones you did in the glass vase you bought...actually I was thinking of trying a set this weekend but the bases have to be made and cured first right??? Saw a vase at walmart that just might do

Can't possible go through a long weekend and do nothing..playing at these crafts gives me something to pass away the time and not feel sorry for myself..

OMG Jean - 8+ feet of water, can you imagine the mold that will develop....yikes, won't be healthy for them to continue living in their homes...sure hope the dyke holds up.

Debbie, I would have opted not to go seeing as hubby has to work the morning..I know, I know you want to see those loved ones that hug the heck out of you.

Prairieville, LA(Zone 9a)

Your Dad was a smart man, Joyce. good advice for all of us.My Mom used to say that where there is life there is hope...just have to quit wasting your breath complaining and get on with it....grin. (Illinois Scots-Irish farm bred)

My heart goes out to the folks in the lower part of the parish...many of them just recently finished repairs/replacing from Katrina and have to start all over again.

the dam that breached is up in Percy Quinn state park in Mississippi....it feeds into the Tangipahoa river that runs into Lake Tangipahoa in LA. That area is about 40 miles east and north of me. There is still a lot of Isaac left and am sure there will be more damage and sadness to come for those in his path. 8 to 10 inches of rain in a short time can do major damage, especially in those areas without levees.

(Marion) Havana, FL(Zone 8b)

Odd thing here, we just started getting the heavier rain yesterday. Those that were predicted on Monday.....not bad but with already soggy ground..it just means a little squish when we walk outside.

Jean, so agree with all your statements. Took me a long time to "chose my battles" as my daughter refers to things. Life just isn't worth being on the pessimistic side!!!

Prairieville, LA(Zone 9a)

Absolutely Marion....amen to choosing your battles. we are still getting some wind and rain...danger now is saturated ground and wind toppling previously drought-stressed trees. Just have to be aware and wary...not like we can hold them upright.
