Thanks for the new room Betty!

mulege, Mexico

We are in a desert and during the hottest weather they conserve water. The Mulege River which goes through town and empties into the Sea of Cortez just below my hoouse is the only year around river in The Baja but it isn't enough for unlimited water.

It's one of those Mexican things that Ii've pretty much adjusted to.

I did have a funny experience when I was running my tumbler which is fairly loud and sounds like a waterfall. A man who works for the water department and lives near me heard it and stopped to ask what kind of water wasting I was doing. I invited him in and showed him the tumbler. He was reassurred. They never know about these weird Americans and whether they understnd life in a desert.

Yes LindaKay the gardens seemed a brighter green this morning, funny how the mind works lol

OMG Katie, no water during the day??? how very odd! You must have to fill containers so you have water througout the day. Sounds as though you've a lot going on..

No work going on today, Suzanne and I are having a gab fest!

Victoria Harbour, ON

So laughing, thank goodness you had the tumbler and not using water! During summer months we have a ban on water for the gardens..it's amazing to get up at 4am and see people out watering..you walk the streets and see dead lawn then lush green lawns..wouldn't that tell you something

Glenview, IL

Good Morning!

I'm on the run today...Talked with a friend last Thursday, and she invited me to lunch!!

OMG, OMG I am soo Excited!! If I still could i would have done a cartwheel.
My Yucca has a great big stalk getting ready to open...This plant I've had for oh maybe ten years.
I rescued it from getting bulldozed. Planted it, It did bloom the 2nd year...Then tree's got bigger and blocked it's sun...didn't bloom again, soo moved it like 2 seasons ago and OHWAH, IT HAS A FLOWER, Big happy smiles while choking back my happy tears, as i was telling it how wonderful it was to see it...Yippy and you bet I'll be inspecting it every single day watching each and every flower open!! LOL, came skipping in to tell DH about the the yucca, he says Whats a yucca?? geeze that guy!

Well and Hands on the hips, not so sure what happened to my hybiscus...had three and i don't see any of them, hmmm. haha, guess that just how it goes gain one and loose one.

OK, I have to go switch out the laundry...

Waiving hello to every one..So glad you are enjoy the 80's weather! We had the same over the weekend, It was simply glorious...Planted 2 roses, hybrid teas! Called Golden something? lol only could remember golden!!
Also planted 2 Yellow Calla Lillies...Finally getting something in the front bed. Asked our friend if she'll water the beds once a week...

Anyone have a soaker hose?? Want to put one up there but not sure, do i lay it down the middle or if i put it in back does it seep the whole section?

TORRINGTON, AB(Zone 3b)

Katie - what's a tumbler? I'm sure you explained it at some point, but I missed it...........

Judy- yaaaaaaaaay for your Yucca flower! Wanna see pics!
Soaker hose - yes I have one (it's great), and I suppose it would matter the slope on your property. Put it at the top of the slope, or if it's level ground I would wind it through the middle and it would spread out.

I'm sure there are other posts to respond to, but they're on the "last page" and I can't see them lol

Our techie friend tells us he's retiring (at 54!!) and moving to a farm! He hopes to do this at the end of the month, and he's expecting a baby in Sept?!?! Wow, what a move eh?!?! Quite a change from buying a new company with a partner (the one that they were going to hire me into, but the partner was doing "dirty deals") to moving to a farm!!

Well, it's back to more job-hunting for me.... cya later!!

Fayetteville, AR(Zone 7b)

JUDY!! Don't dig up those hibiscus! I have 3 also and only two did anything last year, the one that didn't do anything is the biggest hibiscus I have this year, it's HUGE!! It'll probably come back next year double the size. If you're bed is on a hill I'd put the hose in the back so the water can drain down. If your bed is flat, I'd put it in the middle so the water can spread out. I've never used one but that just makes sense to me. lol

Suse thank you so much for sharing your pooches pics! That's way cool, I used to do things with the Greater Modesto Lions Club when I was a Realtor, got away from it though when I got out of that and got a normal job. It was fun but the next youngest person from me was 64 years old and that was just too much of an age difference between me and them, I was in my late 20's and I did not have the same interests they had lol

Katie I so remember Mulege and that river, from what I remember it's not very big, is that right? Is there a beach where the river flows in the Sea of Cortez on one side and a wall of ivy or something on the other side?

Fayetteville, AR(Zone 7b)

Susan open a second tab and have two Dave's Gardens open, then you can jump from tab to tab and not miss anything.

(Linda Kay) Amarill, TX(Zone 7a)

Judy, I have a soaker hose in my raised bed, it is 4 X 24 feet. I just kind of lay it in a "S" pattern back and forth, and it waters it all really good!

TORRINGTON, AB(Zone 3b)

DUH - I actually get a 2nd tab when I click on a new room....... so I Could go back and forth.... it's too early in the am to be thinking clearly, apparently LOL

Prairieville, LA(Zone 9a)

I do the same with the soaker hoses here...zig zag them through the bed so a bit of the hose is near each plant...I also put a fine layer of mulch over the hose to help with evaporation...osmosis draws the water down.

mulege, Mexico

The tumbler is to smooth the edges of broken glass for mosaics.

Ovverflows big time when we have a tropical storm as about 27 mountains empty into it and no where else.

Ther's a little almost-island with a lighthousae on it that jutes out into the Sea/

Lots of laundry done and I'm tired. One more quilt to go and then I think I'm done. I may go shopping.

Victoria Harbour, ON

Katie, what will you be doing with the tumbled glass??? Oh I want to go to Mulege, sounds so beautiful..

Judy, wouldn't pull them out either..I have three Rose of Sharon, they look dead, always the last to have leaves..one year pulled a whole bunch out, through them in the back forty only to see late summer they had some growth, won't do that again...

When I lived on the lake my front beds had yucca, lovely flower when in bloom. Judy I once took an old hose and a drill and did some drilling, didn't want to purchase a new soaker when I had 2 or 3 hoses sitting doing nothing..worked like a charm!

Crissy, have you kept up your Realtor permit?? couldn't that be something that you would want to do part time or is it something that is all or nothing meaning you have to be oncall almost 24/7 and not part-time..how did your weekend go?

Jean any photo's of your gardens???

Susan, yikes that is an age to start having babies..well guess if he is retiring he could be 'house dad'

Kaitie, sure wish you could figure out how to post pictures! Would love to see the Quilts your making, as well as your gardens!

Victoria Harbour, ON

I'd be thrilled to see them as well..

Always enjoy when someone posts photo's..makes you feel you are in their gardens!! will have to wait 3 or 4 weeks before I can post some..ohhh not, think I saw a few purple iris blooming this morning..will check when I get home.

Can you believe I'm bored..had 1 call this morning which only lasted about 2 minutes and then a quick chat with the boss...asked him to give me specific dates for holidays-office closure..get the, will let you know !!! no/no need the dates to plan..at lunch going to try and find a USA map to plan route out and mark specifics as a guideline..although unstructured to some degree with New Orleans being final destination do want a bit of a schedule

Fayetteville, AR(Zone 7b)

Mulege is in the desert, nothing but cactus and dirt. I remember driving over from the Pacific Side to the Sea side and the cactus were huge! These long skinny things sticking straight up in the air. I always liked the Joshua Trees, but not much for dirt and sand and no rain, I like rain.

Katie I'm going to Google it...

Fayetteville, AR(Zone 7b)

Yeah that's not the river, we were just north of it, I don't remember crossing it. I think we stayed here just to the left of this green area. I remember we had the motor home parked on the beach and pitched our tents on the sand, and there were these picnic benches with roofs over them we could sit under, there was like 6 on this one beach, then there was a creek like thing that drained into the sea right before that little peninsula and it was full of chiggers, of course we didn't know that until we got out of the water lol oops! Then at night our tent got attacked by sand crabs, they wanted to come up out of the sand and they couldn't because our tent was on top of them. The geography looks totally different now and I don't see the picnic areas, but it's been a long time ago.

Fayetteville, AR(Zone 7b)

It took us two days to drive from the US/Mexico border down to Mulege, by the time we got down there, spent our 7 days on the beach which is HOT in June by the way, and got back to California we had blown all 10 tires on the motor home and were out of money and were stressing that we would blow another one before we got to the US. It was a very interesting trip. We took the 1 all the way down there, maybe we did cross the river, now I'm second guessing myself. LOL

This is Hwy 1 in Santa Rosalia-Ensenada.

We had the best burritos in this town, LOVE authentic Mexican food!!

(Linda Kay) Amarill, TX(Zone 7a)

Both of those link just brought me to Google map!

Fayetteville, AR(Zone 7b)

Well type in Mulege or Santa Rosalita and go to the satellite view. When you see a yellow line on the road on the map you can click on it and you can travel down the road, it's pretty cool.

TORRINGTON, AB(Zone 3b)

My sister used to tumble rocks and make jewellry out of it. I got a bracelet when I was about 15, but that's long gone (don't know what happened to it?!?!). I think she also made necklaces and not sure what else.

Victoria Harbour, ON

yes, Susan, makes wonderful jewelry! You should go in search of your bracelet..know it was ions ago but if you are a packrat maybe you can find it.

Thanks Crissy, sitting here making the little icon man walk around Mulege..Katie out and wave , just might find you lol

That was quite the trip Crissy..when you are on a tight budget then all that happens..omg what would you have done had you blown another tire? Must have worried about it the entire week you were sunning yourself

TORRINGTON, AB(Zone 3b)

I know I don't have it anymore - I've moved so many times since I was 19, and now I'm 58 lol
It's possible that some stones came out of the settings, and I didn't have strong enough glue to fix it (before Crazy Glue, y'know lol) and I tossed it out........
I think I'm a packrat because I moved so much...... tried to "tie myself down" with furniture, etc.....

Victoria Harbour, ON

Katie, I'm in Mulege, at orchard cottages, beautiful mountains, I'm on some 2 lane highway and on my left think its the town of Mulege heading towards Santa Rossellini-Loretto.

Did I pass you..am looking for water

TORRINGTON, AB(Zone 3b)

I went to Google Maps/Mulege satelight view, and see houses - one has a blue "something" at the back - is that near you, or are you on the other side of the main road (#1?)

mulege, Mexico

I'm east of the town, overlooking where the river meets the sea. k.

TORRINGTON, AB(Zone 3b)

Is this where you are?

mulege, Mexico

Yes, the white circle in the top left corner is on top of my house!!! k.

TORRINGTON, AB(Zone 3b)

wow - wish I could zoom in, and see you waving!!! lol

TORRINGTON, AB(Zone 3b)

ok - so This is your house?

Fayetteville, AR(Zone 7b)

Susan try double clicking on the map, you should be able to zoom in closer than that I think

Ok, never mind, there is no camera shot there. Duh!

TORRINGTON, AB(Zone 3b)

I zoomed in as far as is possible, and what you see is what I got lol

Fayetteville, AR(Zone 7b)

OOOO Google Earth will!!

Thumbnail by crissyr
mulege, Mexico

I think that's the south side of the river. I'm on the north side. k.

Fayetteville, AR(Zone 7b)

Katie that's a nice location, with as hot as it gets its nice to be on that water, even though it's still not a cool breeze in the summer. What's really weird is the Pacific side is cold! The very second the sun rose up over the sea I had to be out of the tent and in the water, it felt like that sun was about 5 ft from me in that stupid thing.

Fayetteville, AR(Zone 7b)

I have nothing to do, can you tell? Susan you still with us?

Katie do you face the river or the ocean?

This message was edited May 22, 2012 3:50 PM

TORRINGTON, AB(Zone 3b)

LOL nothing to do, eh? Well come quilt with ME - and clean house, and play on the computer (wait...... you can do that There!!), or maybe contemplate camping in the mountains with us!!
