your Crossvine is amazing. How old is that?
mine is growing very slow and it is two years old ...
The crossvine appears to be all blossoms, hardly any foliage. Did you amend the soil to produce that or did it just happen?
morganc
it is so beautiful.
Are you sure that you planted a Crossvine? or a Pipevine?
I think I should plant crossvine on the fence we share with the backyard neighbors. Maybe it will overtake the *(&^% honeysuckle they planted a couple of years ago.
This is definitely a Crossvine. Pipevine has a very different leaf.
I looks like it is all booms because we take these pics during the massive bloom explosion in early spring. There are intermittent blooms all summer.....but NOTHING like the spring explosion.
In the fall, it has some lovely fall color....not like a Maple tree, but nice none the less. Basically it's evergreen.....but some leaves get a burnished look.
We do amend the soil from time to time with compost. We have very alkaline soil because of all the limestone here.......so we even use Pinebark mulch to add a bit of acid back into the soil.
I don't know if Crossvine will ace out another vine or not.....our neighbor does not plant in his yard, and it is the cut through path for many deer who eat our vine from the other side of the fence...ha ha ha. But there are so many deer here that most things get nibbled on at some time or another if they can reach it.
Here is another angle last year. You can see that the downhill side where water runs is lusher. They love sun and water, but once established not too much work.
Stephanie, we have it up in our oaks, it grows 20 to 30' up in the trees. There is also a big patch on a fence near our HEB, and it totally covers it, the ground anywhere near it, and out into the parking lot each year. So I would say that it is pretty aggressive in our area. We have to cut it down because it will totally cover a tree and smother it.

Lovely photos, all.
Very nice, Joy!
look at this strange Iris ...
Off course I dunno the name, but I am sure that I bought it at the Iris Society sale at North Haven Garden.
It is gorgeous ...
I am taking detailed pictures of my irises every day because I am looking for a special flower to stitch with a "silk shading" technique .... I think this might be it ...
rouxcrew - we had a bottle brush in Calif. and it made such a mess I didn't get one here......but I love red....and your's looks so pretty. Is it a big mess? Love your sunflower!
drthor - can I come live in your yard? It is so lovely. I have never grown a Clematis....did you start from seed? The flowers are simply stunning. I do believe I'm going to start growing them. I see they play well with others. And seriously....how do you keep the squirrels out of your peaches? We used to have 3 trees and the squirrels got every single peach....and we had wrapped them in netting!! DH went out one morning and had to release a squirrel who had spent all night eating peaches....grrrrrrrr. The ground was covered with pits!
stephanie - do 4 nerve Daisy spread? I love the color but my DH doesn't want another spreader......we have had a rough time with the Cosmos popping up everywhere. I think he thinks he is still in Calif. where the yard was so manicured! Ha!
morgan, I have never noticed a mess and I have three, two traditional and one (pictured) that is a weeping variety. Maybe because I don't "manicure"? As long as I am not hurting myself when I walk around, I am pretty blind. I will say that my roses are making snow right now. I have so many blooms that a wind or rain will litter the ground with tons of petals, making it smell wonderful.
Joy
I love your Cosmos, are you coming to either RU? Hempstead or Burleson? I would love some of yours.
Morgan, they do spread, but not aggressively. They are also very easy to uproot.

I love the larger ones. I was so surprised that they all came back after the horrible heat of last year.
Squirrels ?
I do have one ... I think: GERONIMO !
He likes to feed on a red Cardinal blocks, which is away from the veggies ...
So far no problema
Morgan, some clematis are more vigorous than others.I tend to like the smaller ones and esp the bell shapes. You might even be able to get ones native to Texas! I know for sure that they grow in your zone. A lady in Conroe, Jeanne, used to post all the time. It would be great to have more warm climate friends in the Clematis forum
