Today, I am thankful for...#7

Not likely Sally,But if nothing shows, would'nt hurt to look.Beleive me ,am an expert on Kidney stones.Kinda like having severe labor pains for days. It don't sound like the heart either. Could be an infection of the lining of the lungs. That hurts too.

LOL nadene, Think of B vitamins as little messengers carrying bits of iron where it is needed.

I must have missed that it was in the chest area. Agree that it's not likely that a kidney stone would cause pain in the chest area. Pulled muscle, acid reflux, ulcer are a couple of things that would.

Vitamin C and protein are a couple of other things that help with the iron absorption. Fiber, milk, nuts, mint, and tea are a few of the things that prevent the absorption of iron. I try to have a high protein breakfast (egg with peppers, and OJ) with lots of vitamin C (and nothing that prevents it's absorbtion) when I take my iron suplement.

I'm thankful for cloudy days, the second ripe watermelon of the season, and puppy dog kisses.

The interaction between foods, vitamins and minerals are amazing and often times it is difficult to make the right combination or timing. Sometimes even eating the 'good' foods isn't just enough, but when you eat them, as in Susan's example above. We are all told to eat lots of fiber and yet according to her example, if we were to have a good bowl of oatmeal with a cup of tea, we would be hampering our iron. Go figure.

Thankful that at this point DH is on a 'conservative watch and see'. Last Friday they did a Nephrostomy - putting drain tubes directly into the kidneys ( http://www.cc.nih.gov/ccc/patient_education/pepubs/percneph.pdf ) so as to be able to measure the urine directly and not have it travel down the normal routes. They are trying to dry up the fistula (tissue break) in the small intestine where bowel matter is leaking. So, no food, no drink, no urine going that way. They are daily evaluating whether or not a ileostomy (temporary bowel diversion into exterior bag) surgery will have to be performed. OMG, he already has 5 bags attached to him. They are weaning him from the stronger narcotic pain meds due to his delusions/hallucinations (like pointing to one of the ceiling pot lights on Friday and talking about the head that pops out of there sometimes and calling me that same morning at 4:30 to say he is no longer in SoCal and will let me know where they have taken him). I will be looking to them to prescribe an intermediary care facility - if insurance take care of it - before he comes home. Our home is just not conducive to care and comfort and neither am I.

Poor guy! That sounds like it is rough on everyone. They had to put my Da in a nursing home temporarily when he broke his leg. He was a Type I diabetic and diabetes complicates any condition. I tried taking care of him at home at first, but his wheelchair wouldn't fit through the bedroom or bathroom doors in our apartment. And, there wasn't always someone available to look after him while I was at school. After I came home from school to find him in a diabetic coma, the Department of Human Services stepped in to help. He stayed in a nursing home until he was much better and then they provided a personal care assistant to look after him while I was at school. He had an acid tongue and was a terrible patient. They probably threw a party at the nursing home when he was released to my care. lol. The PCA was a former Army nurse so she could handle him.
I'm thankful to live in a sort of interdependent situation. PJ served MK and I breakfast in bed this morning. He claims it is our reward for getting his red raspberries under control yesterday. MK thinks it might be like the movie "Invasion of the Body Snatchers" and we should probably be looking for the alien pods so we can rescue "the real Jim." I see no reason to hurry. lol. ~N~

Funny thing isn't it. I used to have oatmeal with nuts and milk plus a nice cup of hot tea for breakfast. Couldn't figure out why I was having so many side effects from the iron supplement.

Quilty Girl - Sorry to hear that he's still having issues. A freind had a knee replacement. He said the oxicon (SIC?) gave him a lot of hallucinations. People popping out of wallpaper, statues coming to life, and talking to him. He said the only way he could tell if he was hallucinating was to wait and see if his wife also saw them. BTW - Hospice in KC started another program called Palliative Care. It supposedly is Not a terminal care program. It is for people who have had surgery or illness, have been released from the hospital, and need extra care while they recover. I don't know if the CA branch of hospice would have something similar or not.

Thankful for ER rooms, people with medical knowledge, and those willing to help the rest of us out when there is an emergency.

I'm thankful to have knowledgeable friends. And glad to be at an age where iron isn't quite so important as it once was.

Was a very pretty day here today though I didn't get outside for long. Tomorrow we should be able to get out for a nice long walk. We have a 5.5mi loop that is mostly on very small (even gravel) roads and only a small stretch with any traffic of note. Its very pretty and reminds me of why I love where I live. We haven't been able to walk all that much this summer since its been so hot but you could not ask for nicer days than we've this week.

Quiltygirl - sure hope they can get that fistula cured for your DH. The fallout from the pain meds sounds very difficult to deal with as well.

Susan , I think what you are referring to is a "skilled nursing home " Medicare paid the first 20 days and you had a co-pay of x amount of dollars the next 80 days which most medicare policies paid in full . Don't know what they do now .If you didn't have medicare you were s - - t out of luck.

Dahlonega, GA

Lotsa thoughts for you and hubby Q G.

No Central, AZ(Zone 7b)

Well, he has Medicare and Part B, which pays for EVERYTHING else, Thank goodness. Still in a holding pattern. He has also almost lost his voice. Dr though it maybe was from not getting liquids orally. He walked around the floor for the first time today!

(Zone 7a)

He seems to be doing great for what he's been through. Gentle hugs to you both. Continued thoughts for his speedy recovery.

Today, I'm thankful for Loreena McKennitt and Japanese Gardens.

Hope today is better than yesterday , not as good as tomorrow . Thoughts ,

Could be under skilled nursing home. I went back and looked at the description. It does mension insurance benifits. I'm not clear about where the help takes place. If it is in a care facility or at home.

Grateful for skilled PT people, getting help from freinds, and autumn weather.

Susan ,I owned my own agency and I sold ins. for 31 years , starting with medicare in 1975. When it got crazy and all the medicare policies had to be the same in every company, I decided the only competition was price . Then so many options were added and the health laws , i just got out of it and went strictly to Life ins . Haven't kept up with the changes in years . You have so many options now that it's confusing even to me .
BTW, price for part A was 12.00 dollars a month and part B was 9.00 dollars a month . Some companies separated it into two policies .
Seems like if you can afford it now , you don't need it.
I'm off my soapbox.

Digger - I'm glad someone understands all the ins and outs of health care and health care insurance policies. It's one of the things I like about DG is if you don;t know something someone else does. I only talked with the director of the local agency and think I sort of understand what she was saying. Personnally, I haven't had any kind of experince with the pallitive side of things. I have had more experince (than I care to have) with the ER, health issues, health/auto insurance and accident legal side of things since fall of 2009. I had someone in 2009 drive their car into me when I was walking across a parking lot. So I have a lot of empathy for anyone going through health issues and trying to navigate through health care and insurance.

Ditto on the cool mornings, dew, morning glories, and hummingbirds. Love hummingbirds.

Thoughts and prayers are with you Lynda and DH. Can't imagine how a person can go through so much. I don't do well as a caregiver either.

I'm grateful to wake up with no backache this morning. So very grateful for having so many friends on these forums.

I'm grateful for electricity. A friend living only a few miles away JUST got their power back on.

Grateful for movies, TV remotes, and couches.

No Central, AZ(Zone 7b)

Sounds like you maybe donate your hair, Debra?

Thankful for cooler weather between hot spells. Cannot believe I felt the air was so comfortable in 90's yesterday!
THankful for cooler weather predictions for TX - FINALLY!! Oops, Just looked at weather.com and see it is forecast for 100's again for these 3 days. Sorry.

DH is continuing to be in a holding pattern of watch and see at the hospital. Yesterday they took the staples out and he was also able to joke with the nurses who took him for his walk around the floor, especially when he yanked the NPO (to designate no food or drink by mouth) sign off the door to his room. He is not so anxious to come home this time!

Today I am very grateful for my health, for the health of my DH and for the lovely long walks we enjoy on these cool days.

Today, although I am really really *REALLY* P'O'd at my house having been burglarized twice in the last three weeks, I am truly thankful my dogs were not hurt and the #$%$^ punks closed the back gate so the dogs didn't get out.

I am thankful for the sturdiness and reliability of Irises.

I am thankful for iPhones. Never thought I'd say that, but...(sheepish head duck and half smile)

Dahlonega, GA

Debra , put up a trail camera or some other camera system . Enough of this B S ! Maybe padlocks on the gates if you have chain link .

OMG SOMETHING has to be done! You spoke of a neighbor (or more) who was also burglarized? How many and do the police see a pattern? Sounds like a ring, no?

Had you replaced things from the last robbery as it was such a short time ago? Did they get much? Thankful your babies are OK.

(Zone 7a)

Oh nooooooo!!! Glad you're okay but DANG!!!

(Debra) Garland, TX

High school right up the road. PD thinks it's kids on way home from school. Everyone on this end of the street works during the day, so would be easy for them to get in and out fast. Second break in looks like they wanted to see if anything was replaced they could steal again. It hasn't been and won't be any time soon. Just got repair check yesterday to get contractors started. Still waiting on personal property. Once doors are repaired, loud alarm system is installed, and locks are on the gate, might consider it then. :/

Still mad, rightfully so. But I have found things for which to be thankful. Like no wanton destruction. And that is why we have this thread, si? :-D

Thankful for Loooong Holiday Weekends :0)

Shawnee Mission, KS(Zone 6a)

Ditto on the Dang.

Add a remote monitoring device or camera to the property. They have them so that you can log on to see what is going on at home.

Thankful for crickets singing in the morning, pets who like to hang out in the room with me, and freinds.

(Zone 7a)

I think we're adding remote viewing on our home system. I showed this to DH last night and he was very upset.

Thankful for hot coffee and warm slippers. We had 58º this morning when I got up.

(Debra) Garland, TX

Oh my. A morning temperature of 58 degrees is a vague memory somewhere back in the mists of time. :-D Sounds lovely, and a perfect morning for hot coffee and warm slippers.

(Zone 7a)

I had to search for the slippers, it's been so long. LOL

Hugs, Debra. Are there any good, affordable home security companies nearby? I think home insurance goes up if you get classified as high risk. It might be worth going with professionals.
Today, I am thankful for the inspiration of Mama Kay’s bizarre morning songs. This morning, while she was still lying in bed, she was singing to the tune of the Toys-R-Us commercial:
"I don’t want to get up
My arthritis has flared..."…..
After she had her coffee and arthritis meds, as she was on her way out, she was singing to the tune of the Helen Reddy classic…..
"I’m Old Woman. Hear me roar!
I am heading out the door.
To battle one more day those weeds and bugs. " ROFL.
I love living here. ~N~
