Today, I am thankful for...#7

somewhere, PA

Thankful for the Internet and all it has brought to my life - a wonderful job, information at my fingertips, friends and a way to easily communicate with my essentially deaf mother. And thankful for the cochlear implant she got that allows us to talk in person with ease not experienced in decades.

That's a good one, Tam. I take Mama Kay's hearing aids for granted until they are in for repair and she is without. They are over $1000 an aid so definately not something that should be taken for granted. She calls them her most valuable jewels. :-)
Today I am thankful for paint. Lots and lots of colors as easy as opening a bottle. I've been reading how the Dutch masters had to grind pigment and mix their paint everyday. ~Nadi~

Nadi - I'm the only one in my family of five w/o hearing aides. Mom lost all her hearing in one ear and is at 30% comprehension with the other when she wears her hearing aide AND watching your lips when you speak. She got the cochlear implant last year and its life changing!

Today, I am thankful for:

The generosity of daylily growers.

The amazing joy in watching a two year old sign movie songs.

The good, if hot, weather expected tomorrow...'cause me 'n my sissie are headed to Choctaw!!! :-)

Dahlonega, GA

Debra , My ggs is learning how to sign . Been at it since he was 8 mos old . he's 16 mos now and , like you , I think it's amazing .He doesn't talk yet but he can sure sign . He's starting to try words with his sign , as he goes .

(Debra) Garland, TX

Oops! Sally, that word should have been sing. Lol

LOL

Grateful for anyone who sings or signs songs, people who teach their tots to sign, and early warning weather alerts systems.

Hoping everyone in Irenes path is doing well.

Dahlonega, GA

Thanks Susan . My dgd and her husband are so into this first baby , they spend all their time with him, teaching . He is the happiest kid I ever saw . Loves the attention .
Debra , I'm sure glad that two year old can sing . I can't carry a tune in a basket ,

I learned the sign language alphebet as a teenager. Now maybe remember half of it.
Debra, Don't lose your shirt. It might get cool in the evening.LOL
Sally, Scoot sends his love.Or he would if he was'nt passed out asleep.I have never seen a dog that could sleep as sound as he does.
Went to the county fair yesterday. Had more fun. Will tell you of my adventures later when i have more time.

edit to say---Oh Sally that look of wide eye wonder is precious.

thankful for having a working generator, chocolate cake cooling on the counter and garden fresh veggies to enjoy for dinner.

We are very well prepared for the storm. Its dark and very windy. I guess Irene is on her way. :-)

Tam

Dahlonega, GA

Tam , I'd love to be there with you and share the cake . I'd bring the vanilla ice cream .
Vicky , he is beautiful , isn't he ? We never know what they will grow up to be . I'd like to live long enough to see him grown , don't think that will happen .
Give Scoot my love .

Ozone, AR(Zone 6a)

Tammy,I don't think of Penn. as hurricane country, but you are close to the Atlantic. We're thinking of you.
I'll bring ice tea.

Shawnee Mission, KS(Zone 6a)

He is cute. Nice to hear that someone is spending a lot of quality time with their kids. I hear that teaching them to sign cuts down on the amount of frustration they have with communication. Freinds adopted an 18 month from china. They taught her sign right away. Said it heped a lot.

I have black raspberry sorbet that will also go well with the chocolate cake and, if anyone wants it, mint for the tea.

Tam Hope you are still doing well with the storm.

I'm grateful for Harry Potter movies, dog brushes, and quiet time.

Dahlonega, GA

Oh yes, dog brushes and strippers

No Central, AZ(Zone 7b)

Digger - so afraid to ask about that one.

I'll bring the plates!

Thankful for plentiful water. I know this a drop in the bucket, Debra and other TXns, but our last several days of 100+ and yesterday of 110 weather have my veggies very limp and gardenia looks FRIED. MOST other plants are doing OK, not well, but OK.

I am thankful DD and her roommate/friends have been running the house OK and taking care of our 12 animals. One friend even bought groceries, then he complained how difficult it was to please the 3 girls when they all had different preferences! Welcome to life, guys.

somewhere, PA

I'm thankful to say we are fine and seem to have no serious damage here. We are on generator power. The electric went out around 11pm.

The chocolate cake was fantastic - very chocolately. Really calmed the nerves. There's plenty left for those who want to join us here is water-logged NE Pa!

A good friend's grand-daughter was taught sign language and she could really communicate well before she could talk. So interesting how the brain develops!

Digger - I got a laugh about your gratitude for strippers. I prefer the male-type myself. :-) And I can't imagine how my parents managed with the three of us in my family. Food allergies & ridiculously small range of food preferences must have been real fun to deal with. Once I got through my teen years I realized my folks were pretty smart (& very nice) people afterall.

Other Kids Birthday Parties...man I am tired this week let someone else watch em for a couple of hours :0)
I love my kids but dang

Dahlonega, GA

I'm too old to get a kick out of male strippers . I have grandkids older than them . All my male heros are dead .lol
I really was talking about strippers for long hair dogs . BTW does anyone have a wire Westie ? My Rusty has to be combed off the carpet . I have a Kirby vacum and it doesn't pick up the Westie hair , but is great on hair from my other two pooches .

(Debra) Garland, TX

Vickie, didn't lose the shirt but lost every penny in my pocket. :-)
Susan, raspberry sorbet and mint tea are worthwhile in and of themselves, no?
Quilty, big big hugs.
Tammy, chocolate is one of the four main food groups in my house.
Buffy, my boss had a birthday party for his about to be 2-year-old grandson yesterday. Think he can fully empathize with you.
Sally, one of my employees brought a stripper to the office for the office Husky. She is in full molt and hair is EVERYWHERE. My Zuzu is a Westie mix and the top wire hairs adhere to fabric like magnets. Have to use the tape around fingers trick to get off my clothes. Don't even try with the furniture, just keep it slipcovered.

Today,. I am thankful Shawshank Redemption, My Man Godfrey, and Julie and Julia are all on this evening.

Thankful for plentiful empty milk jugs, sport drink bottles, and large water bottles. Needed a BUNCH of temporary plant holders and they all work just fine.

Thankful the hurricane damage was less than expected.

Very grateful to be on the grid again. And for chocolate. Amazing recipe - it tastes like a ba'zillion calories and really is relatively low.

Share , Tammy .

Dahlonega, GA

Looks good , will have to try that . Thanks

Shawnee Mission, KS(Zone 6a)

I thought the sorbet would pair well with either (or both) the cake and vanilla ice cream.

Tam - recipe sounds good

No Central, AZ(Zone 7b)

I am thankful that hurricane Irene was not as significant as as originally touted. My friend Irene, now living in NJ said she has been getting lots of ribbing.

The cake recipe sounds good - for when it is cool enough to turn on oven. I think it is too complex for my solar oven. I came home the other day to the teens making something in the oven. Made the house hot, so they just cranked up the AC - with their bedroom window open! Ca- ching!!

Ozone, AR(Zone 6a)

I am thankful my Texas DD does'nt live with me forever. Just comes to visit.
I'm with quilty, Lets not cook till the AC is off.
I'm trying to decide if maybe it'd be cheaper to heat with central heat electricity instead of propane.
Walmarts had some mums in small pots for a dollar.

No Central, AZ(Zone 7b)

Well propane is not cheap. And here it is $66 a year for tank rental. Neighbor said here company told her it is cheaper in summer so she bit the bullet and filled it. Guess I should do that. I usually get 50 gallons in our 100+ gallon tank. Our stove and water heater also run on it. Of couse we use very little in the summer.

Ozone, AR(Zone 6a)

Rent for the tank is $50 a year. I use it for heating and cook stove. But it cost me almost $500 for propane this year. The price of it goes up along with the cost of gasoline. Bummer!!!!

I am thankful for the wonderful cool night last night! Windows open and low 60 s. Heaven.

Tam

No Central, AZ(Zone 7b)

I am thankful that there are only a couple nights a year that we do NOT have our windows open. Much to DH's chagrin I would like to sleep year 'round with the window at least open a sliver (like in a hotel in SD in Feb).

I am thankful to be able to sleep snuggled in at least a light weight blanket.

Shawnee Mission, KS(Zone 6a)

Thankful for arborists, green grass, and freinds with chocolate cake recipes.

(Zone 7a)

Today, I'm thankful for thunder AND lightning storms. Quite the sound and fury last night. The center of the storm passed right over us around 10:30pm and several hits were REAL LOUD. LOL Scared the poor kitties half to death. I think little Cleo even lost one of her lives.

I wish I could have chocolate. It messes with my RLS, so I don't eat it except on very rare occasions. Sigh...I miss chocolate.

I am also thankful for rain so I can save on the water bill, debit cards, camera straps that have saved more than one camera and reuben sandwiches.

(Debra) Garland, TX

i liiiiiike reuben sandwiches

(Zone 7a)

Meeeee, tooooooooooo...mmm...

Dahlonega, GA

Grilled Reuben's .
Thankful the 7:00 am phone call telling us D H son was on the way to hosp isn't so bad this time . He's diabetic but was in a heap of pain . I want them to check gall bladder and pancreas before they let him go home

Shawnee Mission, KS(Zone 6a)

Might add kidney stone to that list also.

Dahlonega, GA

Could a stone cause pain in the sternum area ? My D H had one and it was much lower and also in the lower back .
For sure something caused it and they need to find out what . When I talked to his wife , I could hear this awful moaning and groaning , Not what you want to hear from loved ones .

(Debra) Garland, TX

acid reflux can be painful enough to mimic a heart attack. hope is it something minor like that and easily corrected.

Midland City, AL

I am thankful a magnesium supplement has helped MK's heart arrythmia and potassium supplements have eased PJ's leg cramps at night so he can sleep.
I am thankful someone on the recipe forum suggested I try taking a B-Complex along with my iron for my own chronic anemia. I'm not sure why it helps, but it does. I have more energy than I did just taking the iron by itself. .
Also thankful for Tam's recipe. MK insist there is lots of good magnesium in chocolate. lol. ~N~
