Well I think it is time for a new forum this one is getting far to long. Here is a Picture of my Red Hibisus. I finally took a picture of this one yesterday.
Tropical Gardens and Plants #107
would any of you who grow roses in FL know what is on the rose trunk? I don't know whether to pull the thing up and get ride of it as I was, but since the rains came it went nuts putting on buds that are just blooming themselves nuts.
at the base of the rose bush it has this, for lack of a better word, stuff, and I've never seen anything like this before...
Jan
Jan, that is a cute fluffy dog at the base of your rose bush! (lol) But, seriously it looks like some type of lichen growing on the stub of last year's trunk. If the bush is healthy (and the leaves sure look good) I wouldn't worry about it.
The bug . . some type of stinkbug, I think. Try a Neem oil spray with a couple of drops of dish soap in it - it's good for preventing fungal disease, as well, and it's non-toxic for the dogs' sake. You can get the Neem concentrate at any nursery, and also at HD or Lowe's.
'Lady Elizabeth' daylily
Nice Glaucum there 777! Thanks for sending some pictures!
awww. love your collie..
and love the surprise find bloom too.. is it a ginger?
we had a nasty hail storm earlier in week.. everything did just fine except
one thai giant ..really shredded the leaves.. but..new emerging one is just fine..
plus all the pups are fine..
Jan,
I've gotten that same thing on the bottom of some of my Azaleas. Started to kill off the stems where it was so I cut them away and the rest of the plant was/is fine. I think it's some sort of fungus.
Can I have the puppy ?
Tropical - glad your plants survived the hail storm. Crazy weather we are having.
I'll Email Rita...maybe she went on vacation ?
James, I love Brugs.. Most of the ones I have are from JT Sessions or Bonnie ( AuntB)
I can't wait to see Karoline.. I have first belle.. I hope Karoline performs for you the way Kaitlyn does for me..
I have no clue how to reach JT now, since he isn't on DG anymore.
Don't really need any more brugs.. LOL
MJ's I am hoping Rita is in Belize.. and not spending her entire waking moments watering.. which is how I feel I spend my hours this summer..
here is the tropical green castor bean..

Maybe she did I hope to see her here soon.
Oh that is who I got them from JT sessions sorry about that I do know how to contact him. Here is a link to his website so take a look any of you who are interested in Brugs he has the best selection and they arrive wonderfully packaged. I have gotten many brugs from him through the years. Well here it is http://www.countrygdn.com/ enjoy!!!
thanks elaine... that is Saul my blue merle champion, retired now from showing and herding... and he is so borded down here. I could get him out of the picture, he was laying in front of the door to make sure I didn't get inside without him going in as well. With the coats they have they are not liking this heat... wimps... him and his sister Gracie. But then I don't think I would want to wear a fur coat in this humidity.
homer that thing is huge, how to you keep the leaves from just hanging over to the ground and not snapping off at the base.
mjsponies you are about 3 months too late. When we were in the process of moving down here I was thinking about letting my sweet boy go to another home as I was worried about him beable to adjust to FL, I did have his litter brother but was able to find him a home with a girlfriend who had another one of my collie puppies, who is getting older so she was interested in another collie. So Saint is a very happy boy now, as he has a cat that is crazy about him and sleeps with him all the time...LOL Collies and kitty always a winner in my book.
Jan
Jan, Oh well....I had to ask !!! (really, ya know he'd love 11 acres to run around on) but I know what ya mean they are our babies... !
If you guys want to see a garden project we've been working on go here to the Trash to Treasure forum.

777 As a matter of fact I live less than a mile (as the crow flies) from Mcguire Nuclear facility! I feed it every day (after I water) and then give it about 10 gallons of water in the morning and 5 in the evening! It is actually 2 plants if you look close.
I am in agreement with Elaine, Jan. I think that bug is sucking your roses dry. The leaves on the A. Borneo Giant have such large petioles that they can hold the weight of the leaves easily. If you were to cut the petiole perpindicular to the shaft, you would see hundreds of 1/32'' circular shafts that run the entire length of the petiole giving it massive strength (kinda like a honeycomb but circular in lieu of hexagonal), yet, very lightweight . The plant also grows the leaves pretty much vertically and new leaves force older leaves to eventually grow parallel to the ground, where they stop chlorophyl production, turn yellow and eventually die.
James? Are you the person that moved out to the west coast? Nice weather for foliage plants out there for sure!
Debra Please keep us updated on those massive Castor Bean Leaves.
Rachel, Please post some of your pictures! I need to take a picture of the P.Giganteum; and the Monstera I found growing in the compost pile... I think you will like. Please post some more of your pictures ;^)
Plants have such amazing natural structural engineering, don't they! My DH is a mechanical engineer, and he was fascinated with a squash leaf I cut and showed him under the magnifying glass. Same basic principle, but they are hollow up the middle. They sure do pump the water up those channels, too!
My plumeria has been blooming non-stop since April, I am so thrilled. It has been terribly abused and neglected, fell over on its face while I was on vacation in May, and got all bent out of shape. But I finally planted it in the ground a month or so ago, and here it is putting out more new flowers! Now, anybody got a remedy for this rusty fungus on the leaves? Baking soda spray slows it down a bit, but . . . hm, maybe the Neem oil?
Yea Alice. we got 1/2''... we'll take it!
Hello Everyone, my dh checked my e-mail this morning and advised me that I need to let everyone know that I am ok but very depressed as the condition of my garden has deteriorated in this heat and drought. Even under the shade cloth, my plants are getting burnt to a crisp. It will be above 105 all week.
I was trying to suffer in silence as I am very emotional about the subject and did not want to bring everyone down, it is such a happy thread!
I will return with the rain, hopefully sometime very soon.
My computer is also down, and am borrowing my gs's to check on mail.
Rita
I know what you are feeling with the loss of plants due to your heat, me loss was due to a move, the condition of my beautiful garden now is nothing but overgrown weeds and grass that you need a bailer in order for it to be cut. It isn't taken care of, so heart breaking after all the hours and money put into.
Will hope for the best for you and your garden.
doing rain dance for yall.
Jan
wow..homer..i do hope u arent getting any fallout.. :( im sure not..
so homer you water and fertilize every day.. that falls in what lari ann posted on aroid forum..on EE..
she posted pic of her largest ... to date... portodora.. its huge..
lari ann said same homer.. they are heavy feeders..
i guess ive always been cautious on fertilizing..so i use a weak solution of fertilizer..
homer??? what are u fertilizing your EE and tropicals that are heavy feeders ?
also how strong a concentration?
i use a mix.. in a 5 gal bucket.. 1/2 gal of my own brew(rabbit/guano) tea,kelp/fulvic/humic acid powder(2T),
with 2 T of banana fuel..(all purpose fert with minors.its 20:5:30)
then i fill the bucket up with water..
im thinking im starving my poor plants?????
thoughts?
thanks all.. hope maybe next yr..to catch up with ya homer on size of my EE..
LOL
Rita,
We're all glad to know YOUR ok..and you know we will help you with any plants you need to replace.
They are replaceable, your not.............stay inside and take care of yourself.
Yes, Drew...tell us just what are you feeding those behemoths !
Rita I am home for lunch and know your pain and sense of helplessness. We will help you replenish if needed. gotta git back to work, had to put frozen water bottles in the fish pond, it is already 106 here and climbing..
Rita, I totally understand! TOTALLY! We want you to be safe though! I,like many others here, will help you with new plants. As MJS says; you are NOT replaceable. I know you are itching to get out there even though it is so hot!
We want you to be with us to share more stories and pictures for the future; OK?
Drew
The Behemoths are being fed with: Miracle Gro... Superthrive and chicken poo!
Rita, just let me know what you need replaced - we are all here for you - we love you!!!!
Rita, you have sent pieces of so many of your gorgeous plants far and wide for all of us to enjoy.
Take comfort in knowing we will return some of your favorites to you when you are ready! It's almost like having plant insurance!
Here are the plumeria pumila, two purple firespikes, and two costus you sent me in April. Plenty big to supply cuttings already!
Very nice dzzy, love that begonia!
Rita, so sorry about your plants, I know the feeling...my aren't doing so well, but more of the neglect issue. This house building is driving me crazy!! I just keep hoping they can hang on for another couple of weeks or so. I am starting to transport them to the new house and will be working on my new beds in the weeks to come. The contractor is supposed to level and groom the yard next week. I am hoping that the ones I plant will have time to establish a good root system before it gets too cold. Here that should be December or January, so maybe that will get them time to get settled in. I am putting all my brugs in the ground. I will make sure to take cuttings on all of them just to be safe.
BTW, the philo is not big enough yet to share, BUT as soon as it is, you will get a cutting.
I have several things I can share, but kinda waiting until it cools off some and I am less 'stressed and pressed for time". School starts next week, so that will help a little in getting into more of a schedule.
Homer,
I have a chance to buy A. macrorhiza 'new guinea gold' 6 in pot $15. and A. macrorhiza varg. 6 in. pot for $17. Are they easy to grow or fussy? Good price?
Rachel,
Same thing...chance to buy Anthur. clavigerum and veitchii...easy to grow or fussy? What about Philo. billietiae?
I would love to have these plants, but if they require extra care, I would rather wait.
Thanks, Paula
dzzy,
If you want to share when the time comes, would love to have some...trade or postage.
