Mj, the Achimenes basket is gorgeous! I'm definitely trying those next spring.
James, Very nice plant. I tried growing a banana plant when I lived in Vancouver. Had to buy it a couple of grow lights for the winter. They kept the plant green and kept me from getting 'the blues' too!
Tropical Gardens and Plants #107
Been raining, storm after storm, for 3 days now. Hope you're getting lots, too, Mj? I wish we could send some to Texas and the Carolinas now that we're all good and wet.
I must admit it's nice and cool for gardening between showers. Anybody else starting some seeds for fall veggie gardens? (or otherwise making a huge mess on their patio table?)
Paula, I have 4 begonia starts in different mediums there - no sign of rooting yet, but the leaves are perky.
Had a sad mishap while weeding - I broke off a pup from one of my yellow Clivias! Arg. It has 4 pretty healthy looking leaves and the base is firm, but no roots to speak of. Advice?? Dip it in root powder?
I think it must be suffering a bit of root rot from too much rain, as others I've transplanted have many big strong roots. This piece broke off 'way too easily.
My prince of orange does that, too.
Contact this guy (a friend of mine) with your Clivia question - he will happily answer your question.

The 'one' should be replaced by the number '1' - I typed it the way I did so he doesn't get spammed.
What kind of exposure do you have your heliconias in? I planted a hardy one in shade but I am thinking it might need a bit more light.
Thanks for the contact, Kay. I'll ask him.
Alice, my heliconias are in the east bed under the big oak tree. They get filtered sun - really just glimpses - in the summer, because we've had the tree thinned. Mine have been killed right back the last two winters but have come back with new shoots in the spring each year. I think they bloom on 'mature' growth so in the years when we had mild winters mine bloomed earlier, on the previous fall's shoots. My Lobster Claw helis are showing no sign of blooming even yet and they are in more sun than the smaller orange ones.
'Dr. Moy' hedychium getting ready to put on another show!
beautiful plants, dyzzy, really like them. since we have had rain, things are starting to perk up here, but my Prince of Orange seems to do better inside than out, has a new leaf so can't wait to see it. My dwarf poinciana grown from seed has not bloomed yet. loss the candle bush as soon as I put it into the ground. I don't think it will come back. All the hibiscus have tiny buds, lets hope they don't abort. three brugs have tiny buds, poor things get loaded up and then drop them as soon as the heat hits them. Found a nice sized peach triple hib for marked down 4 dollars at walmart, it has been heat challenged but is loaded with healty growth, and since I gave my other one away, I decided I was going to replace it and not give it away. LOL
All their three hib trees are 7.50 right now, marked down from 27.99, so thought another one would be nice, but decided to wait and see if they go down more.
also got a three gallon of dark pink ROS and what looks like a nice flowering shrub noid with some beries hanging off of it for 4 dollars, the south fence is ready to plant up. now for some crapes. I am looking for some all over. So far the baby lilacs I transplanted are all fine, willmove the large red with dark center this fall from front to south fence along with the nice single purple I grew from seed ( it is a nice four ft shrub now)
As soon as I get back from helping my sister I will be in third gear for getting things done. I re-planted some green beans and some peppers and tomatoes, along with some more morning glorys.Still waiting on any of the 6 passion vines to do something besides climb LOL
I love that Debra! Very pretty.
I will save you some seeds Paula. They are new for me.
You are so sweet, thanks!!
We've been getting lots of rain the past week. Plants are perking up....along with the grass ! LOL
Dyzzy, I can send you rhizomes of the Achimenes..
I'm posting some begonias to see if you or Paula or anyone can ID them. I have them in pots and in the ground. They've come back from the freezes for several years, and we've had some doozy's for Florida !
Martha, if you have colors other than red or purple, I'd like to trade for them.
Kay, I'll have enough blue to trade in the spring or maybe even late fall. Have the purple now.
Just remind me. Once they go dormant I can check the pots to see how many baby rhizomes they made.
Mj, you've gotta have the most interesting garden! Are those Alsobia flowers fluffy? Or fringed? So pretty. I'd love a few Achimenes some time this winter if you have enough to share.
Your begonia resembles my clumping ones, similar leaf type, except smaller (see pic). As far as I've been able to tell, they are a fibrous-rooted type. I' m excited to know yours came back after the cold weather! The first little begonia you showed, are the lower leaves shiny or just wet?
Your project looks like it's begging for some bromeliads or something! Very cool 'gnarly' piece of wood. I'd like something like that for a base for my glass tabletop.
Martha, do you need red Achimenes corms?
MJ, that second begonia looks like Gryphon, not sure about the first but they could ID it on the begonia forum. I got a Grypohon this year, I hope it looks as pretty as yours by next year. Most of my begonias die down but bounce right back i the spring.
Mine (in the last pic) are Gryphons, too. They have dark green leaves with silver dots and red reverses. Stems are red, too.
Is there any red on yours Mj? The leaves look like they've got a light green/dark green variegation going on. I think Alice is right, the begonia forum is the place to go for a name.
Here's my orchid 'collection' cowering under the overhang - we got another 3" downpour this morning! I figured they'd drown if they were out in that.
Debra I am in Washington State right now. I love it out here.
Lucky you, I bet they have cool nights out there, not like our hot, soupy ones in the SE. .
Yes we do it is very cool in the evening and until the sun comes out in the afternoon.
James, you are in my favorite spot in the USA - I lived there for a year - loved it!
Can I say OOOOO and AWWW on here? I love your plant display, the Alsobia and the other little thing you sent me did not make it. I wish it would have after seeing that vine.... *sigh*
Sad to say my sting ray was dug up by critters and torn apart and it was in the FRONT barrell up agains the house, they also tore TWO blooms off my golden shrimp plant, which was thriving.. can I pout here?
And, dear KayJones, they also tore up the staghorn and the Achimenes I had growing. I can't stand it *sob*
oh, I will be okay, being dramatic onDG here makes Joe's life easier around here.. count down till I leave and I am frantic to get stuff in I don't want to lose by any "accident"
does this look familiar to anyone? I need to know if it is hardy or not before I plant it on the south fence line..u know it kinda reminds me of duranta.. does duranta have berries at the ends after blooming? mine has not bloomed yet and it is two years old now..
Sure looks like a Duranta to me. Common name is Golden Dewdrop and you can see why.
Well that is great Kay I am loving it also.
Remind me Deb, and I will send you another Stag and more Achimenes - LOVE you, Lady Bug!
Kay I didnt know you had stags also. Ive been looking for one!
