Tropical Gardens and Plants #107

Huntersville, NC(Zone 7b)

Great pictures Martha Elaine Debra! My Cannas(variegated) are just starting to bud and my Bengal Tigers are flowering now at 5-6'. Last year they flowered at over 7'. Wish you guys were here to taste the bananas.

Lee's Summit, MO(Zone 6a)

Martha, I think I have a local source for cuttings of the white T.g. - it's too hot here to send plants or receive plants - it's a SAUNA!

Pretty, pretty, pretty!

Debra, I hope the temperatures will cool down for you soon.

mjs, your cissus discolor is looking real good. Mine seems to have stopped growing much for me this Summer but the amazonica has grown like crazy.

Drew, your area has received quite a bit of rain in the last month but geesh on that humidity level. Wishing you the best.

(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

Martha, I love your gingers , but that sisis discolor is really a looker.. is it an anthurium?

here is the mysorensis vine climbing, no blooms yet, but it sure is going up into the honeysuckle on the front porch.. if it does bloom, I will need a ladder to see it, as well as the special morning glorys and gloriosa vines in that mess..

look at it's little feet.. LOL

I have wanted to show martha the pelican vine growing, but the crack in the brick behind it is emabrrassing, it is getting fixed this Friday, and I have to take it down, dig up the two rose bushes and the huge white ROS, all the stuff behind that brick wing, and then move all this stuff off the porch cuz all the brick is getting re-beautifuided ( sp) anyway, here is that vine, Joe would be very upset showing the brick crack behind it LOL

what is left out on the north end of the front porch area.... all this has to be moved by Friday.. ( I thought I was waiting until late Fall, but saving from 2300 to 950 by doing it now with this guy) what a deal! Why do I always overload my plate during a crisis time, why>? LOL

Good morning, everyone! Deb, your flowers just make my jaw drop - what a talent you have!

Huntersville, NC(Zone 7b)

Deb, If you love what you do; they'll love what you do!
I see that most everyone loves what they do on our site. We are all blessed to grow such beautiful and diverse plants!

Kay, Take me down to Panama City(spring break EARRLY Eighties) where the Beaches are white and the girls are pretty! Any morning is a Good Morning on the beach.

Thanks Rachel!

Lee's Summit, MO(Zone 6a)

Well, COME ON DOWN - we'd love to have you visit our beautiful beaches, with the blue-green water and the white sugar-sand beaches. Temps along the beach stay a comfortable 85 degrees with a modest breeze! Our beaches were recently rated #2 in the USA!!!!

Jacksonville, FL(Zone 9a)

There is the most extraordinary state park someplace east of Panama City, St. something or other. I was blown away by the tall white sand dunes with the turquoise water. An unusually beautiful part of our coast and I am pretty familiar with coastlines, LOL

Lee's Summit, MO(Zone 6a)

That would probably be St. Andrew's Park - yes, very pretty, but it COSTS - there are so many beautiful places here that are FREE, so come on down and we'll explore them together!!!!

Huntersville, NC(Zone 7b)

20 miles south of where I grew up is a place called Dauphin Island, AL. There were huge old growth stands of pine trees with 20-30 feet tall sand dunes. I remember as a child having to scale a little bit of them to access the path to the beach. It was hit or miss, as far as the water;(a south wind was usually the best) due to the Mobile Bay. Winds out of the west, fishing was best! Winds out of the east, finishing was least!

Sarasota, FL(Zone 9b)

All you tropical nuts who live up there where there's winter . . . you definitely need to plan a visit to Florida one of these winters when you have all your tropical plants safely tucked away!

We have some mighty fine beaches and parks here, too, not to mention world class nurseries, Selby Gardens, and of course a private botanical jungle belonging to your DG friend dyz.

Let's see if I can dig up an old beach shot here just to tantalize everyone - as Kay says, it's always gorgeous out at the beach because of the breeze.

Cool pic Dzy and I would love to see your botanical garden. If I ever get back to your part of FL I will be on your doorstep. We still have a credit at a place on Captive after our aborted vacation last spring - DH became ill and we had to come home earlier than expected.

Kay, it was St. Andrews and we visited St. Joe's too, absolutely outstanding beaches!

Our local state park charges admission now too, they all do I am afraid. I buy a yearly pass through the Friends of Hunting Island an am able to enjoy the beach whenever. Hunting Island is a boneyard beach, so called because of the tree trunks that are exposed by the tides. You drive through an amazing maritime forest to get to the water here.

Florida is notorious for it's baby killer and wonderful beaches. Here is a shot of the beach near my house it's always a beach of a good time when I go there!:

What's a baby killer Kay?

Casey Anthony is from Orlando.

Blackshear, GA

Hi Homer,
I think she is referring to Casey Anthony...I'm sure you've seen it on the news. Such a shame!!

The last day or so has not been too bad. Hot, but not unbearable. We actually have a nice breeze this afternoon. My daughter and I are going to try to ride this afternoon. We are SUPPOSED to have low 90s all week. That would be nice....hopefully it will start to cool off some.

I am starting to panick about my plants. I don't know what I am going to do with them. We are supposed to be in our new house in October. I have called a guy to move my GH and he has not called me back...not a good sign. I guess if push come to shove, I will leave it here through the winter and try to move it in the spring. I don't see our house selling anytime soon. Its 4000 sq ft and not everyone can afford such a big house in this awful economy.

Blackshear, GA

Sorry Kay, we cross posted..

Jacksonville, FL(Zone 9a)

No beach on this sea island, we are surrounded by inlets.

The price of shrimp is ls low that some of the shrimpers think it is easier to just abandon their boats. Sad.

Paula, I had a friend who hired a glass/window company to move her greenhouse. It worked out great. They are well equipped to handle and transport glass panels etc.

You might need that space to keep a lot of your tropicals alive through the winter, if it's anything like the last two.

Also, take lots of cuttings and divisions of your favorites and send them to your DG friends . .. it's like insurance! Then IF you lose a favorite plant one of us will have one to replace it.

Our beach has tropical plants . . . well, oat grass anyway.
