Paula,Go for it! Variegated A.Mac. grows like a weed and pups it's *ss off. New Guinea Gold is a little ... "High Maintenance" but pups pretty good. Those are good prices!
Tropical Gardens and Plants #107
LOL Paula, you and I have been shopping in the same place. I ordered the same 2 EE's along with the Synandrospadix vermitoxicus (don't you love that name) earlier.
It sounds like your house is coming right along, you will have plenty of time to get plants situated. October is a good time to plant in our area.
James, I'm doing well - thanks for asking. I have been on vacation with the grandchildren, but am home now and enjoying my lush jungle - it rained a lot while I was gone, many things are in bloom and I am going through my yard with a machete, making room for everyone!
Paula, will sure save some broms for you. Would gladly trade you for a cutting of one of your lovely begonias. Thanks to all the great DG advice, I've discovered that they do really well in that area of my garden where the 'Gryphons' are.
I sympathize with your construction situation - we've never built a house from scratch, but had 2 houses under renovations for 3 years in a row a while back. Phew, it's exhausting! Sure doesn't leave much time for gardening, either.
Here's a weedy old trumpet flower - same vine that's blooming like crazy up in the top of one of my huge oak trees!
dzzy,
I'd be more than happy to share the begonias with you. Do you prefer the cane or rhiz. ones? I have several of both. Let me know what you may want and I will go ahead and root them. That should give them a better chance of surviving the shipment.
Rita, I'm so very sorry and you know I will also help replace them. Please take care of yourself and we will be wishing and praying for Texas to get some much needed rain. We have missed you and hope to see you back to posting again soon.
Paula, sounds like your keeping yourself busy with the new house and all that goes along with it. You'll have to post us some pictures when you get settled in. P. billietiae is easy to grow but I don't grow either of the Anthuriums. I do know that Rita grows veitchii and has stated it's not too picky and I know of a couple of people who grow clavigerum and all have stated it to be an easy grower. You and ardesia both found some really nice plants.
One of my latest, Anthurium brownii.
Rachel, that anthurium looks like it was designed by Vera Wang! Very cool leaves.
Paula, I really like the cane begonias that get big and sprawly - I have some space to fill up! You showed one a few threads back you said was one of your favorites, and it had dark green leaves with silvery spots, and sort of coral flowers. I'll go back and try to find the picture you posted. But . . I really don't care - if you'll root me any one that's big enough to make a cutting, that will be great!
Think it's best we wait 6 weeks or so for the weather to moderate before we start sending stuff, wouldn't you say? It was awfully hot today, since we didn't get any rain - all the big thunderbumpers went around us again, and the sun just blazed away!
Happy Caladium, 'Carol Wharton' - I swear all my plants double in size when I go away for a week! "psst, she's gone, let's party!"
If your interested I have been posting pictures of the house on the construction thread... need to add new ones.
Paula, found the picture that impressed me here http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/fp.php?pid=8705542
OK, got plenty of that one, LOL
Our postings crossed! Too funny. Yes, that's the one, BUT since it is your favorite, please only take a cutting if you won't mess up the shape of the gorgeous plant.
Can I root you a start of those 'Gryphons' of mine? They must be rhizomatous ones, right? Since all the stems come up from the base. Do they divide or what?? Do you cut them apart? I'm a newbie to begonias, obviously.
I also have this one I bought a while back that's making little clumps of leaves along the canes that look like they're ready to root. It's great weather for starting plants here - so humid you have to swim when you walk!
oo, that would be nice. I can't really tell, but if it is rhizomatus, you can cut a piece of the stem and half way bury it in the soil and it should root. Those look like they might root from the stem. Try it both ways if you want and see. I love to experiment. I will root you this one also...'orange rubra' another of my favorites
whew.. 108 today... took a cutting off my tall cane begonia, in case someone wants one. think it is called my angel or something like that.
the begonia you showed earlier, behind the costus ( I hope mine gets like that some day) I have a tiny plant of, it is in a small pot, should I keep it outside or bring it in during this heat? it was a start rooted and given to me by a nice Dg'r earlier this summer.
nice morning glory James, and gee Paula, I am sure anxious to see your brand new house. I have nver been in a Brand new house before ( of my own )
how exciting!
my costus is in the lower right, and look at the leaves on this vine, I have no clue, I threw so many seeds out it could be some exotic morning glory for all I know..
ooo, I LOVE that! I was going to try to get one until I did a little research and saw how big it could get and how long it took to flower. They are beautiful!! How old is yours?
dyzzy,
do you grow your begonias in the ground ? I have a few rhizomatous ones I leave in the ground year round and they pop back up in the spring.
I like silvery/white one too...LOL...you might be inundated with trade requests on that..
Debra, My tomatoes did squat this year too...and now my peppers are looking like they are headed to the compost pile....which has a squash or zucchini or something growing right out the top of it. go figure.
Mj, that musical note plant is just lovely! Looks like another nice shade plant? You can sure see where the common name came from - the buds are just like upside-down notes.
Yes, my begonias are in the ground. I have that long east side bed that I haven't done a thing with yet, under the shade of a huge old live oak. I've been leaving the leaves in the beds for years as mulch, so the soil seems to agree with the begonias really well. We'll see how they fare through winter. It's pretty protected in there.
Paula, orange rubra is gorgeous, too! I am embarking on begonia starts right away! Need advice: see picture!
This looks to me like I could just pin the stem down at the node and this little plantlet would root, yes? It's even got a root or two starting already. Should I cut the stem and root the plantlets separately, or leave them on the mother?
I also have this one which had a name like 'Dragon Wing' or 'Dragon's Blood'. It looks terrible now because the big old brug that was shading it died back the last two winters, so it's getting way too much sun. It usually has plain deep green leaves (not this dull green) with ruffled picotee edges, and red reverses. Flowers are red, too.
I've tried to root cuttings of this guy, with no success. It's never made plantlets at the nodes like the silver one is doing. Could be I tried at the wrong time of year. Ideas?
Usually begonias root so easily and that one looks like it should with all those nodes along the stems. Maybe you should just try different mediums like sand, potting mix, vermiculite or even water and see what works for the stubborn one.
We have had some pretty nasty winters recently and all my begonias have successfully come back.
That's a great relief, Alice, since it looks like I'm making a fair investment in begonias here. That poor Dragon shown above has hung on for 4 years despite being in the wrong place, and two bad winters.
Deb, looks like I will have lots of baby begonias to share. Don't know if I have room for any more of your humuungous brugs, though. LOL I'll gladly trade for some datura and MG seeds.
Paula, just a quick thought here - did you take a look at Home Depot for those 'Gryphon' begonias? That's where I got mine, back in May. They had a lot of them, and last time I was there, I'm pretty sure there still were some. They were not expensive, either.
One of my new Bletillas popped a flower this morning. Sorry for the blurry pic, it wavered in the breeze just as I was shooting.
dzzy,
closest HD is an hour away. I would thing you could clip about an inch on either side of the new plant and root that way. Also those side shoots should root also. It looks more like a cane begonia that a Rhiz.
That is so cute, does it hold a pot? I had to drop by Home Depot today to get potting soil, and they do have some of those begonias left, but I was so sad to see that some dummy has them sitting in the full sun, and they look so terrible! Even though they were marked down to $3.99 I didn't buy any more.
But . . . here's what I did get. Label just says 'Caladium' but, well, you can see the great colors - leaves are more fleshy than my other Caladiums, too. Anybody hazard a guess as to a name?
siam ruby caladium I have two of those..
Debra, that is GORGEOUS!!!
Wow, thanks Deb. I'm wondering where to put it. How big does it get? It's only about 11 inches right now. There are 4 bulbs in the pot, too.
mine got about as big as yours, but the heat set it back, If I were to put it back out I would leave it in a smallish pot and set it under the pear tree.. but I am bringing it in as I don't want to lose it while I am gone. I would leave them together...
brought in buddahs hands and limeade EE, de bugged them and they are happy , clean and under lights in the first area I have started.
note: one of the palms I took outside has died, one inside in dining area has three shoots, one downstairs has 5 shoots. It got to 111 today. If one out of the three survive, I will impress myself,.... the windstorm we had last friday blew my trailing jade planter over and it broke in three pieces, now I have them rooting.I brought in the little begonia, it had withered again, so now it is under a light, all perky. would rather pay a light bill than a water bill and have things living, not dying. If anyone wants any of the many vines I have going, ( babies) please holler and I will pot them up now, they are:
i. cairica, baby woodrose, and a sepa something LOL
geesh I am tired.
Drew I hope my P. Giganteum and Monstera Deliciosa get that big some day. They are both down in the basement garden under heavy lights now.
love the Alocasia Imperial Giant.. very jungley looking there by the chair.
Drew, how close are you to the coast ? Looks like we all might get a bit of rain this weekend and early next week....compliments "Emily"
In addition to the aforementioned ferts, they are quite fond of Miller Lite to!
Thanks Debra!
MJS, That will be a Catch 22 for me as I have the tropical areas fairly wet, but we do need the rain so fiercely here. I am about 20 miles north of Charlotte;about 3.5-4 hours to answer your?
First real storm of the season always brings a bit of excitment even if she is expected to stay out at sea. Our local paper said to wax up the surfboards, the swells are already starting.
Hate to say it; but, the Undertows may take a life or two.
You Tarheels do have a pretty rough surf off the Outer Banks. I am just glad my sons are well past the age of chasing the good waves. LOL One of my sons has actually gotten interested in gardening!
