Plant Propagation part XXXVIII

Everett, WA(Zone 8a)

Sharon,

You're right and I was wrong. I found where some agro Perlite had floated to the surface in a RB and it is NOT as consistently round as I remembered it. More lumpy and mishapen.

I still don't like the way it looks outside - I may be quirky. Indoors or in pots I don;t mind it, but outdoor soil should look like SOIL.

Good grief. JB worries about her dog not pooping (for God's sake don't mark the calendar about whether Barney poops or not. He doesn't have to poop every day!!!) AND, her $5000 "ear plugs" won't work because she has dirty ears!!!)

Then Corey is worried about the shape of his perlite!! You all need to lighten up.

Well JB, you will love this one. Bob came home and I told him about the dryer and he turned it on, it didn't make the noise. Take it and run with it girl!!!

One other thing JB, just because Barney doesn't poop doesn't mean he is dying for crap sake. I think the heat is really getting to you. Maybe you need to move to Seattle, or go visit Corey, to get out of it. Remember Corey is in WESTERN Washington State. A loooong way away from me.

Las Vegas, NV(Zone 9a)

Well Corey, to each his own. I love the look of perlite in my soil.

A burn spot showed up mysteriously on my very large butcher block island top. We a few days ago I Googled remedies and day before yesterday I started removing it. Lemon juice, and salt. And if that did not work, very fine sand paper. I spent the majority of the first day getting strawberry stains out where DH was making smoothies and forgot to wipe up a spill.

Then yesterday my handyman came by to do a few things. He and his son were here from 10 am until 4:30pm. I have them come buy about once a month and do things I cannot do because I would have to get on a ladder. One of the things I had him do was put large surge protector power strips so I could turn off the TV units and accessories at night.

In the Great Room, it is a built in cabinet and there are 7 units. Not enough space to get it if you are bigger than a gnat. Well he had his son, 21 years of age, do it and he did not keep track of what he unplugged and where it went. My handy man gave me the look, "Oh Well". I gave him a quick response. No way are you leaving until the TV is working because that is what my husband does every night, watches baseball.

Well over an hour later he had it working. When he finished he came into the kitchen and watched what I was doing. He went and got his sander and worked on he butcher block for close to an hour. All the marks are gone and the burn mark is not visible. He is coming back tomorrow to finish.

It is actually good because it would have taken me another whole day to do what he did in a hour.

I had my nails done today and the housekeeper came this am. I told them not to bother with the kitchen wood floors because they would just get dirty tomorrow. But they cleaned the rest of the kitchen and I will cover it with plastic tomorrow.

Our temperatures are in the mid 90s and we are usually in the 110s+.

I am posting more photos I took today. Peppermint Hardy Hibiscus

My Hybiscus is not flowering yet, and my little survivor that Mary sent me last year, just stays a green stem, with no leaves. My surviving Angle's Trumpet from Jeanette, has not bloomed yet but it is doing well. My old one that I transplanted came back too but as usual it is tiny.

White Hardy Hibiscus I have had for over 20 years. I transplanted a portion when we moved 10 years ago. I got this as a gift from my father. My first hardy Hibiscus.

Dawn, they require mulched roots to keep the roots cool and they like water. I have them near the dicondra grass area so they get over spray from the dicondra irrigation.

This is a canna leaf. There are three like this. Have anyone of you seen anything like this before?

That's weird! Only place I've seen such is on a tree from a woodpecker. :/

Northeast, WA(Zone 5a)

Sharon those holes like that are exactly like we had in the siding on the deck when we first moved into this house. But it was in the wood. We determitures ned it to be cutter bees. But, can't imagine why it would be in the leaves instead of wood.

They are good pollinators and some places like Kinsman sell blocks of wood or something for them. Look in their online catalog.

However, don't know that is the same thing you have. J

BTW, your pictures on individual pictures are much better. Sorry about your kitchen counter. Is it new? I never would have thought that of that type of material. What can you do to stop it? Gosh, I would die. I need to replace my counter. But, if I do, I might as well replace my dishwasher, trash compacter etc. at the same time. Maybe even my sink. Wow, that length of counter is 12 foot. Cost me $1,000 just for that one shot and that was a cheap one. Now what? If I am going to stay here I would like a granite etc. If I am going to sell, I wouldn't spend that much on one. I love my cupboards tho, so I would not replace them.

Las Vegas, NV(Zone 9a)

I have cutter bees but they usually cut a half moon. No holes. Thanks.

No the butcher block is 10 years old. Vern just did a number on it. The burn mark, obviously a very hot pot, just appeared one morning. Either Vern or a ghost.

Northeast, WA(Zone 5a)

Well, you were lucky to have it go that long without it happening. I have spent so much on this house. How about another couple? If I am going to stay here, I would finish my circular driveway but have to get a permit from DOT. He came out once. I paid once. But had so many things going it didn't dawn on me that he was talking about a who different site. He said to share a drive with my neighbors. Well, for where I want it, I would have to blast thru rock to get with my neighbor.

That is what tells me he was at the wrong site. Sorry I didn't realize it sooner. That was 5 or 6 years ago. See, to put in a new access to the state highway, it has to be several hundred feet from another egress to the highway.. Well, it wouldn't be that far from the other end of the circle, nor my closest neighbor. Also, then I would have to ask my plowman if he could plow all the way thru the drive.

If I could do that I might even build a shop down there for Bob to get is crap out of the basement. Those things would add another hundred thou to the value of my property. I still wouldn't have a garage for the car tho. Just no room for one. This mountain is in the way. LOl. What do I do about it? Right next to the house.

Wrightstown, NJ(Zone 7a)

Sharon, those hardy hibiscus look like a plant we have around here, does it have another name? Our Hardy hibiscus blooms are the size of a lunch plate. They are so big they are not even pretty. They come in pinks and reds, whites and then mixes of both. They look nothing like the tropical hibiscus, at least yours do.

Looks like there is some friction on the new list. I had one of the ladies contact me privately ranting and raving about how she was treated on the Orchid Forum by the moderator who professes to be a real orchid grower. LOL...Anyhow, I have been watching the tropical forum which is not doing too well, but the one man has this large home and beautiful big Birds of Paradise and the whole 9 yards. Just wreaks of money.
Seems they are all master gardeners. Wow., I should have done that years ago, but I saw no reason or need to become a master gardener when I did it for fun. Unless of course you need a title, or have a real reason to become one. I am not a master of anything except being a Mother.Or maybe a dog walker. I am sure the growing pains will keep showing up until everyone gets settled.

My daughter just had a colonoscopy (sp) and so I am going to mow grass today for the first time in three weeks. It is cooler and a great breeze, so off I go to do my good deed.
See you all later. If not later, tomorrow. JB

Northeast, WA(Zone 5a)

JB, do you want me to make you up a couple certificates? One for Master Dog Walker and one for Master grass cutter. LOL, If I knew all the toys on the computer and how to use them, it would be fun. Sorry, you'll just have to tell everybody you are a Master of All.

It just barely got into 60 degrees today. Think finally 62. Good grief, no wonder my tomatoes don't do anything. It still goes to the 40s at night!! I am sure that is the problem with the tomatoes. They are coming on slowly but don't know if they will make it before our first freeze.

I have one tomato plant out there with a half a dozen tomatoes on it about a couple inches across. I am going to get some chicken wire and put around that plant so the animals can't get them.

Think that will work?

Dave, I sent you an email about the pots. You will have to go there and let me know what you want me to do. I don't know where I can get a calculator for UPS. Do any of you know?

Hibiscus grandiflorus. Hibiscus section Muenchhusia
http://www.malvaceae.info/Genera/Hibiscus/Muenchhusia.php

Almost all of the hardy Hibiscus which are under cultivation today are the result of hybridization of the five Muenchhusia species over the last 100 years. It is possible that if more than one Muenchhusia species is fragrant, that trait could have been lost through hybridization and selective breeding. The only way to verify this, would to sniff know specimens of wild Hibiscus in section Muenchhusia. The converse could also be true; many of our hardy Hibiscus cultivars could be fragrant if they have Hibiscus grandiflorus ancestry. Some Hibiscus breeders were very secretive about their breeding strategies or used open pollination, so we don’t know the full ancestry of many of our popular hardy Hibiscus.

To the best of my knowledge, with the possible exception of Moy Grande, no one has attempted to breed hardy Hibiscus for fragrance and/or night blooming characteristics. Night blooming also equates to extended bloom times. This could open new areas of breeding opportunity for hardy Hibiscus.

So please smell your hardy Hibiscus and report your findings here.

JB, this is what I found on the Hibiscus Forum. They are being hybridized big time and they are very close to a "Blue" one. The Moy Grande I posted is about the size of a dinner plate. But here in the desert it looks great. It all depends what you are comparing it to.

Jnette, that sounds like a big project if you do it. I remodeled the house we moved from about 3 years before we moved. Spent a lot of money and then decided we needed to get out of the neighborhood. But we sold at the top of the market and the landscape sold the home. It was beautiful and now it is a disaster.

Master Gardener. I am a "Master Gardener". I have mastered gardening in the desert over 40+ years. I was going to take the courses and I found I could have taught the majority of them and why did I need that title. I did not. I am sure the majority of us on this thread are master gardeners in our own locale. I cannot stand snobs.

When I did mortgages, the more money individuals had, they less they appeared to in the cars they drove and the way the dressed., The want-to-be's were the one flaunting their money, which they did not have. Just a bunch of credit and now they are all broke.

The gardeners were here today so I did a lot of cleaning that they bagged up. The supervisor brought me over 3 containers with flowers. I will take a photo tomorrow. Also two bags of new potting mix. I will take a photo of that also. They want my opinion. It is very expensive so I can guarantee I will love it.

The butcher block is finished and tomorrow I will oil it and we will be back to normal. I am also going to clean all the tables and such on the patio. Still in the low 90s and beautiful. Saturday suppose to be headed back to triple digits. July is our hottest month. I think that is why we always headed to San Diego for two weeks every year, the end of July.

I have worked so hard on my landscape, and I am done. Well as done as I ever will be. So I am going to sit back and enjoy it.

JB, I am going over to the other site and lurk. I will let you know what I think.

Dave I have your bulbs ready to go but looking for another few things you might like. I saw a couple things today when I was raking. Wire vine and baby tears are big here. Would no do for JB or Jnette because the baby tears freezes. I will post photos tomorrow of both.

Vern got out of bed at 4am because he could not sleep and I could not go back to bed. I even tried to take a nap after my shower around 3pm but just could not go to sleep. I guess a nap is suppose to creep up on you, not planned.

I cannot figure out the big deal about 405 Freeway shutting for 2 days in California. I understand the problem, but just stay home for two days.

I want to know what the husband did that the wife cut off his private part AND, then put it in the garbage disposal. And she waited for him to regain conscious before she cut it off. And she was sober.....Vern cringes every time he hears anything about it on the news.

I will return tomorrow.

Las Vegas, NV(Zone 9a)

Well during my typing, I made Vern some deviled eggs, watched the news and talked on the phone. Sorry it is so long and CROSS POST.

Linda, Corey, Dawn, Lee, RJ, where are you guys? Sharon (Sorry if I missed anyone)

Northeast, WA(Zone 5a)

Sharon, guess you have to use the freeway to know how bad it is to have to travel a different route.

Have no idea what you are talking about the guy whose wife cut off his privates. What was that about? Sounds pretty gross to me. The only thing I heard on the TV all day was about the little 8 year old boy that the guy picked up and dismembered. That sucker should be hung in the middle of town. Maybe some tar and feathers would take care of him too.

Guess we have become too civilized.

Well, my sister looked at another house that I might be interested in but the yard was very nice but the house wasn't. That about sums it up.

Time to go to bed, and the movie is about over. tttyl, J

Wrightstown, NJ(Zone 7a)

I left all of my hardy hibiscus at my farm I sold. I will, however checkout the ones my friend has for sale next door. They are the pink and red. Big suckers. LOL

Was that the Orth. Jew kid from Jersey? That was a shame. The guy that killed him was a neighbor if I heard correctly.

Must go get my earplugs checked and go to the chiropractor, so this morning is shot. I will be back later to join the discussion. JB

Columbus, OH

I don't know anyone's real names to find them on FB. The Ohio people I know, because I've met them and fed them cookies and stuff. lol We found each other.

The "tropicals vs. house plants" thing is weird to me. Won't grow in the zone of the gardener in question?? Trying to grow it in the house? Then it's a house plant. They're not just philodendrons any more... I grow passionflowers, ficus, all kinds of stuff. If my dogs are house dogs because they live in my house, then plants that live in my house are house plants, right? No one would argue that Messy Tess isn't a dog because she sleeps in the house, why make that odd distinction about plants.

I'm off to weed, I have an epidemic of some kind of grass in my large containers. Weird.

Northeast, WA(Zone 5a)

LOL, Celene you are too logical. Why don't you go to the new site and try to get that across to them? Doubt if they could wrap their little minds around that. I have a Ginger in my kitchen that I assume is grown outdoors somewhere and they probably could not comprehend my growing it in my kitchen. That huge tree over there.

Love the dog's name by the way. Messy Tess. I have to think she did something to deserve a name like that?

JB, what does the chiropractor do to your earplugs? Does it help? What does he charge you for that? As much as if he were working on you? Must be weird to watch. He does let you watch doesn't he?

Brooksville, FL(Zone 9a)

Celene
you know me from soapdish. I'm meadowyck everywhere, except I'm starting a new boo bus so will be starting that one with swaying bamboo.

Wrightstown, NJ(Zone 7a)

Yes Jen, He puts me on the table, stretches the back and legs so far the ear plugs fly out.
Have a nice weekend. JB

Rosamond, CA(Zone 8b)

I have had so much therapy and I have to sit in a different room in this arm cranking machine, for 3-4 hours a day plus watering. I am not sleeping at all every night from pain, but I see the doctor in an hour or so....I am having a bad reaction on my neck to this machine so I have not felt good or had much time to chat. Sorry. When I get on I see so much posting that I just feel defeated to post and not want to address everyone that posted.

I hate to be whiney so I just don't post.

Winnetka, CA

Ordinarily.... the 405 freeway closure wouldn't mean much to me.... I would just stay away as someone mentioned... but my husband and I are flying out of LAX Sunday night the 17th (booked our trip LONG before we knew about the freeway)... I stopped by the flyaway bus station on the way home from work yesterday.... told them I had a flight at midnight on Sunday/Monday morning... well... generally you would want to be at the airport 2 hours early for security etc... (especially LAX)... so I said to the gentleman behind the counter...which bus would I need to catch in order to make it to LAX for a flight at midnight arriving 2 hours early... 10pm?... he took out his schedule... circled something and handed it to me.... then he said... be here at 7:15pm to depart on the 7:30pm bus!! Sounds as though they are anticipating a LONG drive as it is generally a half hour to 45 minutes on the flyaway from my home to the airport. Murphy's law I suppose.... it will be a LONG departure day for us! Nancy

Northeast, WA(Zone 5a)

Nancy, better take a really boring book so you can sleep all night. Is it a direct flight, or do you stop somewhere? It normally is a 5 hour flight from Seattle to the East coast, so I assume it is the same from LAX. That is if it is a direct flight. A stop somewhere could add an hour or 2 at minimum to that time. Sure hope you aren't planning anything for that first day there. You are going to be so tired. You automatically lose 3 hours first thing, right off the top.

What route do you take if the freeway is closed? I suppose some backroads, but there must be a main highway but probably has a lot of traffic lights so you are stopping every couple minutes.

You will sleep on the plane. Even if you don't think so, you will. Take a warm jacket for the plane 'cause those things always have the air conditioning on and cold. If it isn't, then at least you can take the jacket off. And remember they charge extra for every piece of luggage you have now. They make millions on that.

Ok, I'll quit. Just have a nice trip.

Tulsa, OK(Zone 6b)

Ok everyone we are moving again. jen be sure you got all your houseplants packed neatly and nothing is hanging out as it might get cut off and put down the garbage disposal.

Please check in so I know everyone has arrived safely.
