Hello to everyone and welcome:
To those new to our little chat. Plese feel free ask anything, as we try to keep it simple and fee l/we should always pass along our own knowledge. Lurkers are also welcome. Please check in if possible I would hate to loose someone in one of these switches.
We came from here:http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/1188555/
As with all of the threads I stat I like to welcome anyone new to our little corner of Daves Garden. Please take the time to read all the past threads. Most of them have some great information in them. There are no dumb questions except for the 1 thats never asked.
Anyone new I highly recomend reading the propagation how to 1/4 of the way down the first incarnation of this thread.we have evolved to a mix of good people having fun and discussing issues we are having at the moment. if you need individualhelp just dmail me I am always glad to help.
Here is the 1st post http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/892721/
pictured is of my poppies in flower as a group. They are done and dried up it looks like they are all burned but I think its just the life cycle. they were great fun just a bit too tall for my liking.
I look forward to some spirited conversation but as mother nature has decided to be nasty this year we will also be chatting about the weather and what we are growing
Dave
thank you for the intrest and welcome
Plant Propagation part XXXVIII
Hi Everyone, I am just checking in. I posted on the last thread before i realized we had moved.
So I am getting really happy about cut and paste right now. I am exhausted.
Hi Everyone,
Yes, I have a little helper and she is a ball of energy! it has been a long time since i have had a little one around. LOL She is about to wear me out.
Dave, That daylily is beautiful.
JB, Jnette, Evelyn, Sharon, Corey, Dawn and everyone, I will keep trying to lurk, but It may be a couple of weeks before I get caught up.
I just wanted to say hi.
Jeanette and all ~ I just found this link to the changes being made on our format and how, if possible, to get back the left hand navigation - http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/1189505/#new
I've posted there several times. If you don't like the new format please post. So far no one likes it but Admin hasn't shown any signs of changing back. Make lots of complaints.
kb
Sorry, I also posted on the other thread, but Here I am, ready or not!!!!! None of you can hide,Good Germans always find their man, or woman such as the case may be. :)
I DID, Katie! Did you see it? It's time for another revolution.
I am here but the nerve in my shoulder is on fire so I will return tomorrow. All is well and I am not going to stop gardening until I get old.. My landscape has everyone stopping and taking photos.
Tomorrow is going to be 106 and high winds. Blast furnace. Is that Jnette or JB?> Whatever, I love them both. Got a new customer today. Been working on them for two years. Just two houses down. My front landscape just blew them away. Actually, the wife was instant and husband finally gave into pressure. What I need is another non paying customer. But I do get free many mucho things. I will check in tomorrow after PT. Hope all of you are well. Sharon. Dawn, take it easy and bee well. Mother Winter
Pugh, you have a D Mail.

Stay cool
Dave
Morning,
I am so glad the beginning of the week is over. Yesterday I spent 1 1/2 hours in the doctors office just to get bloodwork results. Seems they are all going to computer and no paper. It is just a PITA. They ask me how old I was when I had an ovarian cyst. That had to be more than 50 years ago. Who can remember that? Then what date was it I had the surgery on my arm from the horse accident? Another 40 to 50 year ago occurrence. They must be crazy for sure. I told them to kiss off and I took a copy of my blood work and left. ' Nuff of that.
Today we are beginning to irrigate again. The hoses are on since early this morning to get it done before the sun comes up and is too hot and just dries it up. I must go turn off the one in the veggie garden now.
You all take it easy and I will be back hopefully when I get things caught up with here.
Good morning,
Woke up with an awful headache, a still neck and some sniffles and coughing. I know I'm getting better but this sucks. I can't think of anything else (except the changes here which still tick me off). I'd say the day has got to get better but I don't want to tempt fate.
Tony is here and I cheer up with him, partly because he is always cheerful with me. WEe both admit to occasional aches, pains and less-than-perfect moods but we both work at staying positive.
I'll tell you a little bit about Tony and some of why we get along so well. I'm not sure when he lleft school and started working but it was probably around age 16. When I met him about fourteen years ago he was working from 7am to 3pm Monday through Friday and 7am to 1 pm on Saturday for about $40 a week For ten years previous to that he's been working the same hours for $30 per week and supporting his wife and two children; his wife said to me once, "we ate a lot of beans." When he started working for me after he'd been laid off AND had back problems I gave him his first weekk's pay in advance and later told him it was a Christmas present as was any other money I'd loaned him. When he got the chicken pox around Christmas and still tried to come to work I told him to go home and not come back until better and paid him full wages. Whe he was better, he and his wife and their baby daughter paid a social call on me to thank me. This man has class.
My first rule with Tony was that he was not to do anything that would hurt him (like working with a short-handled sledge-hammer which is what messed up his back). One day I came in the house and found him looking at a book. He jumped gultily; so the second rule was: I will never criticize you for spending time looking at books.
On my side, I can go to him any time for help and he will help me if he can. The reverse is also true though he has a large extended family for lots of things. He takes great care of my dogs and hom when I travel and at other times.
I can absolutely trust him not to steal and to be totally honest about money. In return, I give him as much extra as I can when he needs it. He gets time off for medical stuff. When he first worked for me and I was not paying him a lot I let him have time off with pay to do other better-paying jobs. As his three children were all still at home this helped.
I think each of us could talk at length about what the other had done for them and, for me, it is an ongoing miricle that we continue to be so grateful for each other. Most days when he leaves we thank each other and we both mean it.
He's very smart and I appreciate that. He's had employers who just wanted hard physical work and wanted hi to work faster, harder, etc and never slow down. With me, I'm always happy with his work. A lot of what I get is four hours a day with a person who likes me and helps me stay on a schedule - a great help with depression.
I've not now of many relationships, including marriages, in which both people feel so blessed. Regardless of money, work or whatever each of knows that the other can be relied upon. Some people get this from their families. Tony and I have both been heavily relied on but have not been able to rely on others. We are both also phobic about yelling or having people angry to us so we are both very careful with each other. We have never yelled, never fought. If a mistake is made we both say "my fault" and move on. (His wife is a yeller and he hates that though he loves her.)
Tony started working for me shortly after I'd moved here permanently and one of the best things I've gotten from him is a huge degree of acceptance in this small town. The fact that he appreciated me so much as an employer made a huge difference in peoples' opinions of me.
Nothing like a little gratitude to improve one's mood.
Guess I will go to work now.
hugs, katie
I've been cleaning up. Literally. I'm feeling much better after a rocky start to the day. I actually made some progress in cleaning up the kitchen. It usually feels like one step forward and two back. Am cooking about twenty pounds of chicken legs so we can eat for a few days.
Good garden news - there is new growth on my one surviving arhat plant.
I'm sure glad to be feeling better. I'm still taking it easy, don't want a relapse.
hugs, katie
Ok Dave, I see why we all missed the fact that you moved us. You didn't give us a link to this new place.
Evelyn, I just went over there and all I had was a long thread of complaints. I did not find anything that told me how to get back to the way we were. Did you?
There isn't any way. They changed it and are being slow about changing it back in spite of all the complaints.
kb
Whoa gals, I saw the link and I clicked on it to get here. I am going over and see what the heck you are talking about. JB
Jenette, here is Dave's post from the other list. Link is there. You just missed it! Open your eyes and watch your mouth. Do not pick on my Dave.

I am sorry for being away for so long. I had too much to ship and was snowed under the last 2 days. we shipped over 300 plants and about 10 different orders. I will try to catch back up to make sure I don't miss any questions or I need to reply.
sorry everyone. its been kind of funny watchin 2 cripples tryin to box up so much stuff. lol...
The pic is of one of my crosses i am starting to see some great new flowers from my crosses.
have a great evening
Dave
Anyone else want to pick on Dave? I am watching and you will be sorry. He is busy and making money. Do not get picky with him or I will have to hurt you all. I do not get mad, I get even.
So, having said that, I am going to have some wine and a salad. Be good to each other because no one else wants any of us on their forums. LOL Sorry, I just had to add that. I am really tired and feeling devilish. I love New York..........la la la la..........Chris Christie is loveable and huggable..............la la la la..........nite Jenette!
Yes, there is a lot of him to love alright. Can't hug a tub of blubber. It's like a balloon full of water.
JB, you said you were going over there to straighten things out. You, who didn't even have a problem. Well, you came back and not one thing was said about it.
The big problem solver. Go have your gin and furgedabotit.
Yeah Smartass JB, the reason I missed it, is because this is the one I saw from Dave:

BUT
IT DOESN'T MATTER. WE ALL LOVE YOU ANYWAY DAVE. Even if JB wants to make an issue of it. She thinks she is the only one that can love, but she doesn't know the meaning of the word. : P
This is from Dawn. I am moving it from the last one. Jeanette
Wowie you guys. I could not possibly catch up to comment on all. I am doing fine. I had a tendon repair in my rotator cuff and a muscle partially torn and a butt load of scar tissue (adhesive capsulitis) torn loose.
I have a chair that cranks my arm around to try to prevent a reoccurrance of the scar tissue so no PT yet, still have sutures in.
I think Hedgehogs are adorable. Would like one, but I don't see them in this state, may be on the banned list like ferrots and Gerbils are here. I found a gopher once in a trap that looked just like a Guinne pig, it was blonde. Ate a million roses of mine. grrr!
I would like some of those poppy seeds who ever offered them. Sorry I read too much and several new people here now or returnees.
Dawn
If you want a hedgehog, I'll find a rescue group that'll place one for you.
Feel better soon, Dawn!
I guess we can't say "take it easy until you heal" if they have you in a rack to prevent more adhesions. Just keep breathing deeply and try to forget the pain as soon as it fades.
"Can't do PT yet" sounds pretty serious!
Some people try to deal with pain by being saintly and stoic, but I find that making noise and being grumpy just helps for some reason. It can even be distracting to listen to yourself, and speculate on whether it's more like a troop of howler monkies or a grunting hog. Whatever is most distracting!
And if you find ANYTHING that makes you laugh, it's better than a pill. Or goes well WTH a pill.
Do you have anyone who can help out around the house or garden?
Good luck!
Corey
Actually, I was of a mind to be NICE to Dave and ask how his dear wife is doing lately.
A.
JB and I can probably get some one to knock any of you off for no charge. Just practice.
We were only 95 today with 28 mph winds. I went to physical therapy. This young lady, late 40s, has God gifted hands. My next appointment is July 15th because I forgot to book my appointments and she is totally booked until then.
I did get up early but did not do much gardening. Just did a little bit of everything. I was up at 5:30am and the sun was not up. Just early dawn. I love that time of morning. Especially in the desert. Tomorrow is landscaper day. I get up early and do all the cutting and dead heading and throw it on the ground. They pick it up for me with a smile. Makes it so much easier.
Evelyn, your little plant died. It did not like our heat. I had it in the shade and it still died. I think I will, just have to leave the cold loving plants in the cold.
Dawn, good time of year to be on rehab. Impossible to garden in this heat.
Glad to hear all went well and you are on the mend..
Katie, I had a relationship like that with a young man, Ugo. He was Hispanic and illegal. I met him when we were this home about 2 years. I was working 12+ hours a day and tried to do all my gardening on Saturdays. He worked for the landscape company that installed our landscape. About two years into the relationship, his wife joined us nd she cleaned house while we gardened. They were young an so adorable. He had gotten so good I very seldom had to tell him what to do any more. Fifth year, we went to San Diego for two weeks and when we came back, they never showed up again. Vern said about three weeks later they called and he told them to call back later. I had the operator trace the phone number and it was a pay phone. I paid them $200 each Saturday so I know they did not go somewhere else. Probably got picked up.
I am off to bed because I must get up early in the morning. See you tomorrow.
Morning Everyone,
I am just checking in. I had forgotten how much energy an 8 year old deals with. LOL She is keeping me totally busy, but it is fun. She is kind of like the little boy in that commercial who falls asleep as he is asking to go to the moon. She is really a Joy though and I am blessed to have her for this time.
So far my experiments show that things in a green bottle root faster than things in a clear bottle. I still have to find a blue bottle and brown bottle, but it has been interesting.
My lantana cuttings are a complete failure this time. I think the ones outside are still doing well, but the ones inside are going to have to be composted and new plants cut.
Hope everyone begins to feel better. Dawn I have had that surgery along with a bone spur that claimed a 1/2 inch of shoulder bone. I will keep you in my prayers.
Where is Ruby? She must be busy playing with her grand children.
Gotta run, hitting the craft shop and toys r us today. it is too hot to work outside.
Sea ya
Dave
your pic at the beginning of the thread makes my back ache.... to much bending over for all those little ones...
Jan
Good Morning Everyone. My back aches a bit from working with Tony to tweek the little back yard path. We were both dripping sweat even though the work is fairly light. I'm glad to be enough recovered to be able to help a little.
I'm still kind of foggy in my head so I wander around doing a little here and a little there. I feel like I'm not getting anything done but when I look around things are a bit better.
Cooked a lot of food for the dogs yesterday so that's taken care of for a few days. I'm almost caught up on dishes and laundry.
We go into a hibernation/survival mode when the weather is this hot and humid. Being able to make some progrress is great.
My schotai tree which bloomed about a month ago is now making seed pods AND putting out new leaf growth. In February, before it flowers, it grows new leaves which are a beautiful bronzy green color. The new leaves that are coming now are a light green. It's a very interesting tree. And the birds love it.
Time for some orange juice.
hugs, katie
Dawn ~ You and your shoulder are in my prayers. I know how painful that can be as I had a rotator cuff replacement. It was quite a while before I could have any PT as the only thing that was recommended at first was ice. Actually it was a machine that was a cold wrap around the shoulder and Steve put it on me twice a day. You feel as though the pain will never subside, but it does get better. Just please don't try to do anything too soon and need another surgery....take care!
Dave ~ I am happy for you that your business is doing well and you are able to keep up with it.
JB ~ Why do you think everyone is trying to attack Dave?? We all love him here. we are his harem. Well, except for Corey and rj. (?) Are you busy selling plants too?
Jeanette ~ Is it finally warm enough for your tomatoes? I imagine that the tunnel helped them a lot. Mine have only started to grow now since I planted them so late. One had to be replaced. If I had covered that one, it might have been saved, but I did not. It was just one tomato plant.
Jan ~ How long have you been in Florida now? Do you like it there better?
Katie ~ You are very lucky to have Tony in your life. It is always wonderful when any type of relationship is rewarding and fulfilling to both parties. I hope that you feel better. I go through that a lot from time to time. you are in my prayers as well...I suppose everyone on this forum-thread is actually since we all have are challenges.
Linda ~ It is wondeful when you granchildren are young if you have the time to spend with them. Enjoy!
Corey ~ How is your battle with the slugs doing? Did you ever get any delphiniums going past them?
Amanda ~ What is happening with you now? Please know that those rose campion will seed all over the place so watch for seedlings if you don't cut off the fading flowers. I just moved the seedling to where I wanted them but so many have snuck around I am questioning my judgment in keeping them in a prime place. I'll let you know what happens, but if you want more I will have them, and eventually, so will you.
Sharon ~ I am sorry you lost the Lithodora. I have three planted in the shadiest part on the north side of the house though it still gets some hot morning sun. This is the first year for them so I don't know if they will do well over the summer either. I have not had one live over before except those two I kept in pots from last year, of which I gave you one. I hope that your shoulder is better, too.
I must go now. Much to do. Have a good day everyone!
Are any of you guys having a problem with this site now? I guess the only time I really am having them since I am getting used to this little box, is when someone writes a pretty long paragraph and you know what you see when you are typing this is not what you get when you read it. The system adds the column for the name and date in so it scrunches this message, making it narrower and longer. But like I say, it is mainly when I am trying to read long paragraphs. I get a headache and can't read them all. So, if you wonder why I ask you something you have already told me, it ain't my age!! LOL I am writing this with no breaks, paragraphs, on purpose. To show you what I mean. Now, don't you quit reading it. I want you to see what I mean. I will bet that everyone of you stops reading it a quarter of the way down. LOL, don't blame you. I am just blabbing to fill up this space. Ok, can't think of anything else to say. Forgot to tell you Evelyn, yes, my tomatoes got warm. Too warm according to the people on the tomato channel. Now I am trying to figure out what to do since it gets near 100 during the day and down in the 40s at night. They said the tomatoes can't take that.
Ok, tell me when you quit reading this.
I read the whole thing. They just posted that they are going to change the thread column back so it starts on the far left. Lots of thank yous are getting posted.
Felt OK this mornning; then this afternoon so much overall pain that, in spite of a vicodin, I had to lie down for two hours doing nothing, couldn't even read. However, I do know that when this happens it will pass in a couple of hours. If it doesn't I take a couple of Benadryl and go to sleep.Whle it's not pleasant I'm grateful that it isn't constant llike the foot pain was. The foot is still a little painful at times but not nearly as bad as it was. Maybe the threat of surgery got its attention.
hugs, katie
Evelyn - plants are in temporary pots and doing nicely. I was released by the specialist with restrictions to lift 25-30 lbs so I am enjoying the day around the house and in the yard planting, weeding, digging, weeding . . ... I have not been able to do this since the middle of May and I am waaaay behind.
Thanks for asking. Hope you're staying cool. :)
A.
Evelyn
I'm a native floridian and I LOVE IT. Everyone morning when I drive to work I have to wear sun glasses, after spending what seems like all my life in northern Ohio where there was very little sun, I'm thrilled and tickled pink to be back in FL.
How is that for an answer.
Besides now that I'm down here, I can grow some tropical bamboo. I'm most interested in the clumping varieties as we are just renting until we decided for sure were will end up.
Jan
I'm trying a clumping tropical bamboo in pots. Here in Ohio ;)
good evening everyone:
I mayt have forgot the link I thought i got it on.
I split my posts up so they are easier to read. yes I have 2 more on monday and then I am done for the summer toooooo hoooootttttt. I will start up again in early sept/late august. Had to cancel one nice order because its too hot I guess they missed the boat.
The trick on them is I use a table to do most of my work and then take them to their home location. from their I weed sections as long as I keep the johnson grass, netsedge and tree seedlings under controll I am all good. This year a lot of stuff did not get transplanted untill late and there were more weeds than plant. I am getting a handel on it. Got me a nice shade part 10 x10 with 70% shade (I think on the %) for plugs and hostas to go to. i will move the dianthus their soon as it does not like the 100 degree weather.
well see you all in the am have a great evening. thank you JB and everyone for sticking up for me while I was away. ((((HUGGGS)))))
Dave
Katie your helper tony sounds like a good guy. I get mad when people dog Mexicans because most of the crop workers that come here, do a job that nobody here would do unless it paid a lot because it is outdoors in the elements and hard. I think the average Mexican is a hard worker. I knew that about my X. If he had ever lost his job, he would be willing to and would stand on a corner or do brick work for people, or help move, or anything so that we would not starve. Luckily he did not have to do that, but he did plenty of side work along with his real job to make extra sometimes.
I do have one of those ice machines, and I have to do it in between the chair that moves my shoulder all around. I am getting a muscle stem/Interferencial machine too Saturday. I guess that is PT for me at this point.
I have lots of seeds from my Mystic Merlin Malva if anyone wants some. I love them.
Thanks for the prayers Ev. Sharon I agree, the heat is going to be ferocious this week. Where oh where is our Monsoon. Hope we get it next month and for a few months after.
Yes, it is finally suppose to be nice here for a week. That will certainly be nice.
I am getting a lot of advice from the tomato forum on what to do with my tomatoes. They all know a lot because they always have good weather. Problem is, they don't know how to handle our on again off again weather. Good and bad.
Bob has been wanting to put a coat of stain on the deck but the weatherman kept forecasting thunderstorms at night and he was suppose to make sure of 24 hours of dry weather. At $40 per gallon I told him to wait until Friday since that was suppose to be the start of goodweather.
Yeah, July first!! But, it always rains on the 4th of July. We'll see.
The Indians had to cancel their powwow this year because their grounds were flooded. That is too bad. Everyone always enjoys them.
Well, so far the fireworks have not started. I expect them to start tomorrow night. The jerks on the river will be up for the weekend and they will start it. They are from the bigger county where the fireworks are banned. All fireworks are banned. So, they come up here and create a problem. The time allowance is always listed in the paper, todays, saying when it is legal to use them, and which ones. I don't know anything about the kinds, but I do know when the clock says they are to quit.
Fortunately I do not have any animals that are afraid of them now. Altho, I do not know about the 2 new cats. They are indoor animals anyway. Last year they kept it up until almost 1 o'clock when I finally called 911 and got someone out here. It is a $500 fine if they would just do it. They probably figure they can just leave and go home to their own county and not pay it anyway. Would be interesting to know how many tickets are torn up.
Well, guess I will go to bed. Bob gave up a half hour ago. Nothing on TV and he does read a lot. ttyal
Jnette: I am trying my hand at the eBuckets for my maters this year. Will let you know how it goes - the people in the self-watering container forums swear by 'em.
A.
Good morning everyone,
I got lots of good sleepo (no dog pee in the bed) and am feeling almost human today. Actually, I feel pretty good. pain in legs but not much else.
Tony and I agree that some people are weird/ dishonest/PITA/whatever and there are enough of every nationality we have here (which includes Canadians, and Germans as well as Mexicans and Americans and occasional visitors from other countries) that people problems are not about nationality. We're just real grateful to have each other.
I have some serious rearranging to do in my bedroom which is also a sewing room. I am going to get at it.
Dave, I'm really glad to heaar your business is doing well. You've done a lot of hard work and it's gratifying to see it rewarded.
Everyone have a great day.
hugs, katie
Amanda, going to go over to the self-watering container forum to see what the ebuckets are. Never heard of them. Good luck with yours. Do you have your tomatoes ready to plant? Do you have the ebuckets? Where did you buy them? Sounds interesting.
I think everyone is starting their July 4th early. I know JB is out looking for the lobster and steak. Probably out in the water looking for the lobster.
I don't think they will just come running when you call them JB. I don't think that is how it is done.
I am here Linda.....yep, been busy with the grand children. Having them here really cuts in to computer time. You all are such a fun group and I always learn gardening tips from you all too.
Jnette - great idea for the round up killing the nut grass. Nut grass is a thin bladed grass that sort of reminds me of Lariope in the way it grows and isn't ugly, but is definitely ugly when it begins covering up the beauties around it. In all actuality, the whole large front bed that runs the length of our house, and was the product of our first real year of gardening about six years ago has been neglected for a couple of years now as my hubby, trying to be helpful to me and my weakening legs started building a stone and soapstone walkway......which now hasn't been touched since last fall. In his attempts to be helpful to me, he in actuality put up a gardening barrier for me because for a year or two in to the project, he told me it ws off limits to me because of construction dangers. I could develop a real resentment if I gave it too much thought, so won't go there.
He and I were discussing earlier the possibility of digging everything in the bed up and replanting again at some point. We will see.....we will see.
Also Jnette and other noticing issues with Dave's website recently. One of the things I have noticed is whenever I click to enlarge a picture, it takes an exceptionally long time to return to the thread after viewing it. Really takes the joy out of looking at enlarged pictures. Anyway.....we will see on this too if there are any thought of changes taking place.
Alll others who I enjoyed reading all that you have going on......I hope that each of you will enjoy the holiday weekend. Hope it is a good and safe time for all. Take good care.
Ruby
Thanks Ruby - you too. :)
@ Jnette - the eBucket is DG's adaptation of the EarthBox that came out some years ago. You hafta MAKE them.
People rave about the results. Some plants were given to me at the RU in VA last month that I haven't planted - the hand excuse. I also started jelly bean tomatoes and hot cherry peppers from seed. I found a cantaloupe (I think) in one of my flower beds yesterday so that will be transplanted too.
Pre-germinating as Shoe would say some trionfolo italian pole beans, sugar baby watermelon, and a couple of "tree okra" that Robyn sent me as part of my newbee seed pack.
As I have taken up all the prime real estate in the yard I am on the concrete driveway along the house with the eBuckets. Due to critters I am also going vertical. Haven't quite got that part figured out yet, but I have about 100 dried bamboo poles in varying lengths to play with.
My BF used to be the one who did the vegetables but he gave up his space to me in the yard. We are both excited about the driveway project. Ought to be an interesting summer. :)
p.s. There's an awful lot of reading to do for this eBucket thing. Dmail me if you want the quick and dirty.
