Plant Propagation part XXXVII based on my own experience

Northeast, WA(Zone 5a)

Evelyn, have you ever tried putting newspapers over them before they come up, or cut them and then put several layers, I put 12 over them and then cover it with compost or bark etc? My daughter and I did that to my perennial bed several years ago and now this year I see some of the things growing, probably shallow rooted things.

If I get out there now and get them out I might try it again 'cause I remember when the weeds were up to my butt out there every year. I had a big tray what they sell to mix cement in, and filled it with water and would lay the newspapers in there to soak good and then lay them between the plants. Then, before they dry out, cover them with a mulch of something. I like the compost that you get in the 2 cuft bags. It looks nice.

But it does last good if you put several layers. Some people don't put near what I did but I was obsessive I guess. Desperate??

Corey, aren't those cool weather plants? Have you guys had more rain than usual? Must have 'cause I think we get ours from you. Whatever your weather is today, we will have it tomorrow.

Winnetka, CA

Hi Dave - JB....

Nancy here.... I found your propogation thread Dave and read through some of the earlier threads.... you were right there was a ton of good info there.... filed away for the future! Hello to everyone else.... I hope you don't mind me popping my head in and saying 'hi' to everyone. I live out here in southern California and was looking for some creeping phlox which lead me to Dave.... unfortunately I couldn't purchase from him as I'm a west coast gardener but he was very helpful and invited me to stop in and say hello....I already knew JB as I had purchased a jasmine from her and made the connection that I had seen both names quite some time ago on this thread....small world as they say.....

When I first joined DG I met Merrymath while searching for asiatic lillies ..... she had referred me to this thread for an answer to a propogation question. I'd forgotten about the thread, but am glad I found it again - hi JB! The jasmine is doing well and I'm very happy with it...it's starting to put on some growth now that it's settled in and summer is here..... and Dave, I did find some creeping phlox and got it planted yesterday!!!

Ruby.... I used to read a series of mysteries that took place in Crozet, Virginia... can't recall the name of the series now, but they involved a postmistress and her dog and two cats.... loved the stories! I am headed your way this July as my husband and I make our first visit to your state... I'm really looking forward to it.

Evelyn.... didn't I send you a d-mail once about a trade...? Think you used to work at my local nursery some time ago? Wow! Seems I've talked to several of you along the way.

Since you all seem so knowledgeable... ok if I ask a question? I have a beautiful Meyer lemon tree that has begun to yellow at the leaf edges. I sprayed her with some liquid kelp and that seemed to help a bit. The tree is beyond prolific... and other than the yellowing of the leaves seems very healthy. Possibly an iron deficiency? Been doing some reading and that's the direction I'm leaning. Any thoughts?

And thanks for letting me stop in and visit everyone. Nancy

Pawleys Island, SC

Hi Nancy, Welcome. I can't help with the lemon tree, but there is a tremendous amount of info spread throughout these threads.

Jb, you are too funny! you had me going, thinking there was a blooming cactus I didn't know about. LMAO.

Rick, by 10 am this morning, it was 97 in the shade on my porch. The trick is " I plant survivors!" if it don't survive, I don't ever plant another one. LOL

Evelyn, Glad you are warm and dry now. It was a weird season for you. I cannot function when it is cold, but when it is too hot to breathe I have a hard time too.

I put newspapers down over the weeds in my drive way once. The article I read said they needed to be 4 inches thick, but I didn';t use that many. I then put shredded hardwood mulch over the newspapers and it did real well for a while. Then we got some of those awful smelling orange fungi from the mulch, so we haven't used anything in it since.
I need to weed everything now. It is beginning to look overgrown. ( aw who am I kidding, it is overgrown!) Oh well, I will get to it eventually.

Talk to ya later,
Linda

Northeast, WA(Zone 5a)

Linda, I am sure they meant 4 layers, meaning 4 sheets of newspaper. The one that told me to use 12 layers I think was teasing me, but I did use 12 and that was about 5 or so years ago and it has lasted this long. Still not like it was but I have not gotten out to take care of it. Too much to do. But even using 12 has been worth it.

Do any of you guys sew, quilt, or anything like it? I still have that question.

Las Vegas, NV(Zone 9a)

Well I have not gardened for two days. Came home after funeral and felt lousy. I had a headache and my shoulder was not happy. And the seats were hard and I do not sit that long as I did on hard seats. I got dressed to garden, took two Tylenol and laid down for a few minutes to try and beat the headache. Next thing I knew it was 5:30pm.

And then this morning, another headache so I sat all day on the couch with an ice bag on the back of my neck. Now the ice bag is on my shoulder. Vern is drinking Margaritas and watching baseball. I was going to make a rib eye steak tonight but it is still in the freezer.

The plants that I stored in the 3rd side of the garage last winter are doing marvelous.
See Corey, I push the envelop the other way. I think I live in Southern California. And with a whole lot of mulch, some of my plants think the same. But I have loads of muted shade.

I am going to garden tomorrow.

Jnette, Todd's landscaping was installed by two master gardeners. A few learning curves but you know your limitations.

Lee, did you lose power because the eagle dropped the fawn on the power lines?

We have some friends in Santa Fe, New Mexico that are starting to panic about the Arizona fires. The fire is heading their way.

I have a Meyer lemon and it loses leaves to yellowing when it gets to hot. I just think it is a way to eliminate stress. My African Sumac's do the same thing.

We had big time wind today so gardening would not have been fun.

Hopefully tomorrow I will return with news on my gardening work done. Later, Sharon

Greensboro, NC(Zone 7b)

Evelyn - thank you for the rose campion!

They arrived perfectly - you are an expert shipper. I will let you know how they fare. :)

@ Ruby - good luck with the grandbabies!!

Have a good night.

A.

Northeast, WA(Zone 5a)

Yes Sharon, I know my limitations. 20 or 30 years ago I could have done it. But not now, and I wouldn't even attempt it. If I could afford a part time gardner and then that place would have taken a professional arborist at least once a year and possibly twice a year for pruning.

One section, about maybe 30 feet square, was filled with plant to plant, i.e. no room in between for weeds to grow, perennials like daylilies, columbines, poppies, peonies, and so many things blooming. Those things would need dividing without making a mess. Just so much

Have any of you thought of growing hostas in pots? Sharon do you grow hostas down there? Just wondering.

Sierra Foothills, CA(Zone 8a)

Nancy ~ Is that you?? Wow! I am SO happy to hear from you. I lost your address in my move to NorthernCA. And that was in 1987, due to my mother's health. Since I moved here she lasted until Sept 1999. I will d-mail you more details. Please let me know how you are as well.

Gosh I loved working at your nursery and living in Topanga....and knowing you! My life is good here too, really what I have I always dreamed of. More garden space than I know what to do with and try anyway! If you follow this thread you will hear me complain about weather or weeds, but really that is all I have left to complain about. I guess we all have something to challenge us from time to time.

It has been a long time since I had the benefit from a lemon tree. When I lived with my family in Inglewood we had a huge lemon tree. One year there was a frost warning, which was rare for that area, and my dad stayed up all night with a tent over it, light bulbs underneath it to keep it warm and I think he sprayed it with water as well. It's a wonder he did not get shocked. That tree seemed to produce lemons all year around. I forgot about that until you mentioned your lemon tree.

Sharon ~ I hope you have a better day tomorrow.

Jeanette ~ Yes, I tried that method in another area, by the new "Cottage Garden" border, just so it wouldn't be full of weeds next to it. I layed down newspaper, then cardboard, then newspaper, then chicken manure, then my own compost. I did this in the whole area and Steve didn't seem to notice the lack of weeds as there were very few. It does take some time and I like to do it in "stealth mode", without being seen. I have disposed of my cardboard stash, as I had to clean up the back porch, so I will have to start saving cardboard again. I was surprised at how little compost on top remained. I suppose it is a never-ending cycle. But the best part was the "not so many" weeds. It is harder to do that when you have plants growing in the area and trying to cover the rest. Especially when some of the plants are not up yet, like the callas.

Well it is late, so I will have to go now.

Northeast, WA(Zone 5a)

Me too. 'nite.

Pawleys Island, SC

Jnette, hostas do very well in containers here. They just need water more often.

Northeast, WA(Zone 5a)

As indoor plants Linda. And then taking them outside. Thinking that they need a time of really cold season. I have never heard that. And I'm not sure when they get that really cold time. Maybe they put them in the refrigerator. I should clarify that with her. We had them in Seattle and it is a zone 8. Never got real cold like it does here in zone 5.

Columbus, OH

I use hostas and heuchera in containers all the time, to fill spots in the border where I'm waiting for a perennial to grow out, etc.

Wrightstown, NJ(Zone 7a)

Good Almost Afternoon Gang,

Just got back from having blood work done. Devoured half a bagel, eating water mellon and sipping on the coffee now trying to read all the posts from the 18th and 19th that just showed up. Where have they been? I am beginning to wonder if they have decided to read them first before they send them out. LOL. Are they in for a few laughs if they do.

I am so excited seeing new faces and especially old friends and customers who caught up with this outrageous forum. I do not recommend it to any sweet and loving people I know because you never know what kind of a mood one of us may be in and what will show up on the forum when you open it in the morning.

No I do not mean you Jen....I said one of us meaning all of us..........so there. Just relax and read on. You ask if any of us sew. Let me tell you how good I am at sewing. I crochet.......one single stitch is almost my limit...except for the scrubby and that I can do with much stress involved. I had a wonderful Singer Sewing Machine with lots of good stuff on it and I could not work it. It was too complicated. I still have it but bought a $75 Brother that does 3 stitches or maybe 5 and that is my limit. I knit and pearl, nothing else.........I do very good crewel embroidery or I did when I had two eyes. I did pictures for all my kids and they treasure then. I also do Needlefelting, am pretty good at it too, but since I hurt my arm I am unable to do it for any length of time. Having given you this rundown of my many talents I want to know what the question is you are hesitating to ask.

Nancy, I am so glad you found us. We are such fun, but watch out for bad words once in awhile........we have a few people here who get very emotional at times. I am so glad the jasmine is doing well. Do not let it dry out. It loves water as you probably know.

Linda, why don't you drive up here and pick up a hibiscus I have that I am going to have to trash if I do not find a home for it. It is a salmon and unhappy as all get out because it is pot bound. It will die if I leave it outside. I just love them and no way can I take it in the GH this year. I have been taking cuttings just to keep it small but it just keeps growing and the pot it is in now is too small. I can not deal with these larger plants anymore. I am too weak with only one really good lifting arm.

Ruby, love your pictures. I am not much of an outside gardener anymore but I love looking at all the pictures.

I am going to downsize in the number of tropicals I propagate. I am going to do mostly jasmine, gardenias and the christmas (holiday) cactus. I find that mixing too many varieties in one greenhouse very difficult because they all take something different and I am too lazy to be mixing and matching crap. I need plants that are happy with what I do when I do it.

I have this gigantic cane like begonia that I keep cutting and it is easy to propagate. It does not have a name but I am thinking of parting with that also I am going to be out of space come Fall and not until then will I know what I am going to dispose of

There is something wrong with this thing now, you never know when you will lose a post.

There is nothing like the anxiety you get when you open this forum in the morning. Just a rush, like OH GOD A VIRUS??????Well maybe that is a little extreme, but you know what I mean.

Wrightstown, NJ(Zone 7a)

Ah Ha, it made it. I had to quit because I could no longer type. Just wanted to say bye for now and hope you all have a super Monday. JB

Northeast, WA(Zone 5a)

Celene, I said an indoor container. You live in Ohio. Closer to my zone. She lives in Texas. Too hot down there for hostas outside. Therefore, she plants them inside in pots. But calls them indoor hostas.

Did you feel that smack JB? Then it came back and got the other side!! Good shot Jen!! Good grief spare us all the impairments. You can't do this because of one eye. You can't do that because of a sore arm. Lord, what the hell can you do woman?

No, you do not deserve to hear the question. You probably don't have your hearing aid turned on to hear it anyway. And you don't need to apologize to Nancy for my foul mouth.

Good Heavens take this woman to the old folks home. Now she can't take her plants into the greenhouse because one arm is sore. For Heavens sake have that housecleaning woman you like so much take it to the greenhouse. Use your head.

Why don't you just throw all those crappy plants on the compost pile and they won't be in your way. You can then walk all around the greenhouse wthout bumping into anything.

Oh wow!! Now you can't type anymore. Ouch!!

NOW YOU CAN APOLOGIZE FOR ME!! And quit blaming your lousy typing on the computer.

Evelyn....sorry to say that I am not the same Nancy that you are thinking of.... although I do frequent Green Thumb nursery (same one right?) and have spent many, many hours there. I would be happy to ask if your acquaintance is still there if you'd like? Sounds like you had a nice friendship! Garden pals are the best.... if you give me a last name I can inquire next time I go... it would be a nice thing to help you connect with an old friend. I'm familiar with the community that you live in now as my best friend lived in Trukee for many years.....and I can well imagine how much you must love it! It's very pretty there and having lots of gardening space is such a blessing...

JB.... bagels, watermelon & coffee.... sounds like heaven! I love summer fruit! My nectarine tree is full of fruit and I plan to make a fruit salad tonight.... yum! And you're right.... this does sound like a fun group and I am finding out that the jasmine needs moisture - we are supposed to hit 100 degrees today so this morning before I left for work.... I watered it and moved it into a shadier area underneath a clematis. I took a long walk last night and there is sooooo much jasmine blooming in my neighborhood ... it was heaven! I think I did more sniffing than my dog!! LOL!

Jnette-that home sounds really lovely.... you're right about proper maintenance to keep it that way.... wouldn't it be great to have a full time helper? I think all true gardeners wish for that extra set of helping hands in the garden... especially from someone who knows their way around the landscape. I was just speaking to a former co-worker who retired and moved to Bellingham Washington... he loves it there and is beginning his 'first ever' garden. Since he retired a year ago he's been concentrating on walking every day and has lost 50 lbs... now he's ready for his next challenge... I sent him a care package of seeds for next spring.... I may have converted him with all my 'garden speak'.... he was a bit intimidated, but I know once he gets started he will love it. Who wouldn't?

I think I'm going to add some greensand around the base of that lemon tree based on some advice I got about micronutrients... kind of an experiment at this point. My family loves the lemons and we cook with them all the time. It's lemonade season for us as temps are rising.... I I just love the tree and want to keep it as healthy as I can.

Have a good day all!

Miles City, MT(Zone 3b)

Jen, you know I sew, quilt, knit, crochet, make rugs, anything to while the time away during this stupid weather.

The flowers aren't blooming, but with all the rain it is all really green, which is different from most years that are browning up by now,. Weather has been so off and on , today it has been overcast and trying to rain, so I expect a storm really soon, complete with thunder and lightning. But hope for the best.

My friends have found a house to rent, while they pump and dig out of the flood. Was about 100 miles away, but bad, and it hit three times in a week, I am sending up lots of things this week with her daughter. All of the extra seeds you folks sent are going up for her because she has nothing left in her garden and I feel so bad for her. So I know you would do the same. Hope I don't hurt anyone's feelings.

We seem to be out of danger for now, we have two rivers West of us and North is the Yellowstone, both are down, but lots of rain, or snow melting can change that in a heart beat.

JB I wish I were closer, I sure would give that hibiscus a new home. I had a tree (standard) but lost it this year. I do so love the tropical plants. But if you all remember, I really complained last year for lack of room to bring all of mine in.

See, I do get a word in once in a while. And I have even been nice!!!

Love ya, Lee

Wrightstown, NJ(Zone 7a)

HA HA HA HA HA...............Jen, you are so funny. I ducked and you missed me. LA LA LA. OOPS just tripped over the dog. S*** that hurt my good leg. Now I have two bad legs. WAAAAA.
I have more excuses than you have tomato plants. Of course I still work very hard. or is it hardly at all. I am about to retire for the summer because I have made enough money to take me out of the poverty list, so I will lay low the rest of the summer.

I will have more time to drive Jen crazy. You got edited, or did you do that. HA...naughty girl. If the shoe fits wear it. I do not think I specifically gave you any credit for anything. You can dish it out, but you can not take it. Speaking of taking it, did you take anything from the house you looked at. You know, any cuttings from all that neat garden? Well, you usually do, isn't that why you go see all these houses, just to get cuttings from the gardens. What do you want a big yard for? You do not, but you still look, and why? CUTTINGS!

Northeast, WA(Zone 5a)

LOL, Lee, first of all, I am sorry I must have been out to lunch when I wrote that 'cause I am well aware that you do. I am going to send you a D-mail with the question. But only if you promise not to tell JB. She thinks she is the worlds best scrubber maker.

Next, it is good to hear from you even if it wasn't in the slot I left you. That is so sad about your friends. Do they need any more seeds? I might have more I can send you. Glad you sent the extras.

A very interesting move your co-worker made, from CA to Bellingham Nancy. I hope he can take the winters there. You didn't say how long ago he moved there. Maybe he has been thru this wet wet last couple of months. 50 lbs !! That is wonderful. Hope he keeps it up. Bet he feels so much better doesn't he? Great.

Well, gotta go send Lee a D-mail. ttyl,

Ok now I have to edit again because you know who butted in while I was sending my post.

Whoops, it won't let me read what she said so I will have to let this one go.

Now she's blaming poor little Barney who was just trying to tell her he has diarrhea and has to go poop.

Retire?? you have been retired for the last 82 years!! Such as, never have done a thing in your life. Even have a house cleaner to come in now, another person to come in and clean the bird cages. Another to come in and clip your toe nails!! Are you so fat you can't reach them? Even have the vet come in to take care of Barney. How many people have a vet make house calls?

And you are accusing me of stealing cuttings from that gorgeous yard!! To tell you the truth it never entered my head. But now that you told me how, maybe I will. tee hee hee. Do you give lessons too?

Northeast, WA(Zone 5a)

Boy, those people in admin sure did mess me up. Right in the middle of my posting they did a flip flop on the screen.

Miles City, MT(Zone 3b)

Jen, I think you should request another showing, and bring the clippers. Just think of Sharon and the plainclothesmen hehehe.
I am hoping we can get the seeds in soon, so she can get a few plants before it goes back to the minus temps. I don't think there is enough time for any more than I sent to them. After all they will need to be shampooing, washing clothes, and etc so not much time for the gardening. So when we go up, I will plant for her, along with her daughter. Thanks for the offer tho, maybe next year. I do have a few cuttings that I will send--from whomever send me the coleus, and a few starts that I hadn't planted yet. I really didn't need those extra pots planted this year anyway!!!
Love ya, Lee

This always happens when I go on a thread, the thread gets busy and I can't keep up with all the banter and banterers. :( I am out of the loop.

I came out this morning to find my dog with a decapitated rabbit in it's mouth, when I went to feed her, she dropped and and the other one picked it up. We have a huge issue in the high desert with all kinds of rodents this year. mice, gophers, voles, I think and bunnies.

Northeast, WA(Zone 5a)

Dawn, I hope your animals have had rabies shots.

I had the neatest post from a lady in the south. She is sending me some Southern food products to try. I thought that was so cool. I have never even posted with her before. I was just asking what some of the things were they were talking about on the food forum and out of the blue, she sent me a post saying she was going shopping to send me stuff.

It is so exciting!! And so nice of her. Problem is, how do I reciprocate? I asked her, food products, or plants, or?

mulege, Mexico

I just got home safe and sound. Am being mobbed by the five furry ones. Heat has arrived and our air has thickened.

More soon but wanted you all to know I made it home and my cold is almost gone.

hugs, katie

Northeast, WA(Zone 5a)

Good for you Katie. No problems? I am sure you would have said if you had. So, Welcome home.

Wrightstown, NJ(Zone 7a)

Jen, if you need food, there is a program called "food stamps" you could sign up for. Be sure she is not trying to send you something to make you sick. I AM NOT FAT. I AM CHUBBY. Why are you picking on me. Just because I am old, honest and loveable? You know I love you and think you are a very nice person. I just can't tolerate your stealing cuttings and trying to get free food from unknown people on the internet. Shame on you girl.

When you get as old as I am and have worked as hard as I did, and have married as many times as I did, you too will be able to afford all the help you want. So there! I have earned it and I intend to enjoy what they call the golden years.

Katie, welcome home. Hope your puppers do not eat you alive. I bet they are glad to see you.

Dawn, Barney used to chase the bunnies that got in his fenced in yard and kill them. He sometimes left them get away and those all had NO TAILS. He would bite them in the butt as they were getting through the fence and he pulled the tails right off them. It was not funny but yet it was. We had many bunnies with no little white tails. At least they were alive. They are good eating, but he never ate them. Just killed them and left they lay so I had to remove the carcass.

I can not make a perfect scrubby. Believe me I never said I was good at sewing. In fact just the opposite. I was an outside person. I was hunting and fishing and riding horse when most young ladies were learning all that crap. I can not even sew on a button correctly.

Where do you get all the nasty things you say about me. Do you have a book on how to be a smart ass? If not, you should write one so the rest of us can read up on what to except.

I hope you soon find some other hobby. Bashing me is making me tired. You are such a wingnut, but as I said I lub you.

To all the rest of you, I apologize for all the interruptions of the forum.

Here is what real tomato plants look like. Not ones growing on straw bales. Straw is for horses stalls.

Tulsa, OK(Zone 6b)

Good morning everyone:
well we are having a cool spell. the high is only 90 degrees. oh boy.... boy you guys do enjoy the banter back and forth.

JB I cut back hibiscus where it looks like a stubby nothing and bring them inside to winter over. they seem to do ok with the treatment so you might try that this year. I do understand about the frustration of moving in and out. I have a set of banannas that will either winter over in their pots or die. I am thinking die because they are in huge 30 gallon pots and will have snow on them this year.

Welcome back Katie. I am glad you had a safe trip. so did we do anything special along the way?

well time to get busy packing the last order from yesterday. i lost my helper yesterday so I was on my own and had one left over.

Have a great day
Dave

Crozet, VA

Howdy folks - what a fun bunch. Welcome new folks. I am a newbie here too. I am much like Dawn and can't keep up all the time, but I have already learned things from this group from the few times I have dropped by.

Oh yeah, grand babies were here yesterday....today is recuperate day. Actually going this afternoon to meet another Dave's Gardener who is in the area camping. She has a couple of plants for me and I am taking her a couple from here too. Buttoneer visited us two months ago I believe. She is from Pennsylvania and she and her hubby are in to gold and gem prospecting. Virginia has a gold prospecters club they joined, so they will be traveling here quite often. I just love 99.9% of the folks I have met on Dave's. I have had the misfortune to get involved with a few crazies too who have thrown me for a loop, but don't let it get me down for too very long.

Jnette - I know what you mean about meeting great folks on Dave's and reaping good rewards. When I first became a member, I was forever opening my mailbox and having little thoughtful gifts in it. Very much of my house plant collection and many of our outdoor plants have come from Dave's members over the past five years. I stumbled upon Dave's garden years back when reading reviews of vacuum cleaners of all things. I was referred to a Dave's forum and somehow decided it was a great site. It has truly served as a real blessing for me over the years. And.....I love the vacuums I have purchased due to glowing reports on the Dyson. hahaha

Linda.......one of my greatest pet peeves is a the bug that seems to be associated with the Dave's software program which for no good reason loses messages in to cyber space. I cannot count the number of times I have had my words deleted in to cyber space, never to be read. Anyway....I keep trying.

A comment on misleading advertising pictures.....yep, been fooled by that in the past. One year a nursery we deal with sent a glossy package presenting a very eye catching and beautiful looking blue Scabiosa.

Crozet, VA

Sent that before the cyber space Gods ate it. Anyway......I loved the look of this attractive Scabiosa even though the name was all that enticing. hahahaha I have been utterly disappointed with the collection we bought. The Scabiosa which has grown the best would best be labeled a weed. No, haven't pulled it up and fed to the goats yet, but get miffed every time I see it. Have to say though that this in year number three I believe, the Blue Scabiosa is looking quite lovely this year. Just wish I had bought a single blue one versus the whole ugly collection of them. Live and learn, live and learn.

One more comment and then off to prepare for the busy afternoon.......Jberger.....There is a possibility that my hubby John and I will be traveling your direction mid September. I would love to give a welcoming new home to your Salmon Hibiscus.....it sounds gorgeous. I drive a station wagon type of car and will take whatever you have that may need a new, more southern home. It wouldn't be a road trip north if we didn't come home loaded down with a car load of plants. Heck, I might even have some goodies you would like to have and we can do a swap or something. Let me know......The others have given you ideas for keeping it over winter though...so if you want to hang on to it, I understand and don't blame you a bit.

I am always open for more plants and have many that I too can share with you good folks.
I am still thinking that I may be the donor of the seeds that grew Dawn's Rose Campion that she posted here a few weeks back.

I do know one thing that I will be looking for later on. I want to get a few Caster Beans to start a few plants next year. A few years back we had them growing every where and I saved seeds and shared with lots of Dave's members. I was looking recently and found five beans in my collection. I didn't even attempt to grow them this year, but really want to grow again next year.

Anyways.....sorry to the lengthiness of my posts. I was just excited by all I read here today. Have a great day everyone and happy gardening.

Ruby

Northeast, WA(Zone 5a)

Ok, you guys are not complaining about this flip flopped format so now I wonder if yours are backwards. Are you writing on the righthand side of the screen? Now I am writing in a little block in the center. What the crap is going on?

I wonder if I am being censored. LOL, now I am as paranoid as JB. But this is driving me crazy. Yeah, JB, crazier than normal. I wrote to Melody and told her I didn't like this and asked if everyone has this. Haven't heard back from her yet.

Yes Ruby, I had not even talked to the lady before and all I did was ask what Zatarian's was. I think that is how it was spelled. You probably know what I mean. And apparently it is a Southern thing and she is sending me some things to try it. It was so sweet of her. And yes JB, I am sending her some of my food stamps for it.

So JB, whose yard did you sneak in to take the pictures of the tomatoes? I know they aren't yours. You would have cut them all off with the mower before they got that big. LOL, that is what she means by "cuttings". LOL. Good one Jeanette.

Ok, Dave is giving us the high sign to knock it off JB. It is his forum so he rules. Gotcha Dave.

So far this year we have had 2 days in the low 70s but most of them have been in the low 60s and hgh 40s at night. This week it is suppose to be in the mid to high 80s!! So, here we go again, no spring. The poor plants have not been able to grow at all. Their little feet were just shivering to keep warm. So now we are going to cook the tops.

Dave what do you think about giving them a shot of triple 20? These are my container plants on the decks. I haven't even gotten the weeds out of my perennial bed. Up until now it has done nothing but rain. Now it is going to be too hot. Bob helped me yesterday and we tried to get some weeds out but we got driven in and bloodied up by mosquitoes.

It is hard to keep all of the water things turned over. Things that the rain water settles in. A perfect breeding ground for the darned things. Every time I see a pot of water outside I turn it over. You would think eventually there wouldn't be any more, but it happens.

Well, got a drs. appt. so better go take a shower so I don't stink the place up. ttyl,

Well, I went on the Dave's Garden site and found out they are changing this so we are all going to be writing in little boxes now. Oh well, guess we'll get used to it and wonder how we ever did it any other way.

Have to make room for the advertisements that we all have turned off. That will be next. They will turn them back on for us. About then will be when we will all have to go to Cubits.

Hey Dave, why not ask Kim is she wouldn't like that banana plant in the kitchen, you could have bananas on your cheerios every day and if it was in the kitchen it would be easy for her to pick them without going outside. OK, just a thought, stop frowning at me. And, I did cut the hibiscus for two years and it just grows bigger. LOL I think I found a home for it. My friends down the road may want it for a stock plant. It is theirs! Yahoo.

Jen, you have me in stitches when you talked about my tomato plants. I swear, they are mine and I did not plant them. My SIL takes care of them. He is such a darling. He cultivates and hoes them all the time. If they were mine they would be weeds as high as the tomato plants. You know I have a bad leg and a bad arm when it comes to pulling weeds.

>> Corey, aren't those cool weather plants? Have you guys had more rain than usual?

I thought so! Frost-hardy, in fact, mostly. But they sure have stalled (except for the Komatsuna and "Asian Spinach" (no ID). And MONTHS later than expected, the Snow peas have deigned to grow up a foot or two. But the Bok Choy in the ground: pathetic!

Maybe the heavy clay slowed them down.
Or the fact that frost only chnaged to cool, never warm.
Or the clouds or rain.
Or the fact that I plnated a few bok Choy in that bed last year and the year before.

Someone in WA urged growing most things as fall crops, as if we have no sring. that can't be right!

But I would give up gardening, in fact I would even give up eating greens things, just to get away from hot, humid summers.

97 in the shade at 10 am?? I would take all my clothes off and lay down in front of a fan, and/or melt right down into a puddle.

Where is the rest of the post I posted before Corey? No edit on there. Who is playing games?

I didn't step on it, honest! I know not to mess with New Jerseyites.

When they have specials on "breaka TWO aya legs fa da price of one!" I know to be respectfull.

Maybe the admins trimmed it to make more room for ads. ;-)

I know the peeps here at dg is what keeps me going on here. I almost don't go on many other threads anymore. Was thinking about not renewing but I get so much from plant trades and plant files, witty banter and seeds. Good obnoxious friends like myself.

I am up for renewal in 2 weeks. I am having surgery Thursday early our time, so keep me in your thoughts and prayers. We have to be there in the Los Angeles area and in bad traffic it could take 4 hours. We have to be there at 5 am. So we got a room tomorrow night and it will probably only take an hour at that time to get to the hotel. Greg can drop me off at the surg center and go back to the hotel to bed. Better for both of us.

Love ya guys.

You are smart to do that Dawn. Just exactly what are they going to do? Have they told you how long the surgery would take? Well, whatever, will be thinking of you and hoping that all goes well. As it should.

Then there will be a long bout of physical therapy won't there? That's ok, 'cause it works.

You have to be there by 5 and your surgery will probably be about 9 or 10 o'clock. Jerks, that is what they always do. So, don't stew if you get caught up in traffic.

Sharon, where are you? Haven't heard from you for quite a while. We really haven't forgotten you. Just let anyone have a rest for a while but how long is a while?

After JB crashes I need someone to yak and jabber with. This is the first time Corey and Dawn have been on here in the evening. Think Dawn's is nervousness. Don't know what Corey's issue is. That's ok Corey. Did you guys have a nice day today? Should, it is suppose to be in the 80s here tomorrow.
