Coffee Break #60

Southwest , NH(Zone 5b)

BA - I think "overgrown" is each gardener's personal privilege to define. Your position sounds rational to me. :)

About an hour ago, I was just sitting in my living room typing an email when something monstrous caught my eye outside the sliders up on the "stage" (the mowed area of our meadow path where all the wild critters tend to entertain us). Two of the biggest Tom Turkeys I've ever seen or imagined were strutting around trying to get me to look at their "fans". I have never seen turkeys actually do that fan thing like we used to draw in 4th grade art class at Thanksgiving. These guys were AWESOME! Huge and so pretty all fanned out. My camera was out in the car (of course), so I grabbed the binoculars and just watched them for about 20 minutes. We have a 4-5 foot boulder up there on the edge of the woods, and when they walked past it to go into the woods, one of them was taller than the boulder. I opened the door to the porch that extends into the woods on that side of the house and I could hear them just on the other side of the trees as they made their way past the house gobbling all the way. That made my day! My version is that they were showing me their gratitude for our posting our property near the house so that they can safely roost up in our tall pines at the top of the meadow. That's my story and I'm sticking to it! lol

What a treat, I've never seen a turkey in"full display" mode. I did once see a fairly large flock, about 15-17 birds, but they were moving quickly, and in tight formation, at about 6 am before the traffic started gearing up.

I guess we have to cherish these occasional moments, even if a camera isn't handy !

Where's Hank with the javelin when you need him?!

Southwest , NH(Zone 5b)

Napping! lol (and thankfully, the puppies were also napping with him or the turkeys would have vamoosed sooner than later!) He had seen them in their full regalia earlier in the week. Fascinating to see!

Looks like we're having the same kind of exciting Saturday night.... :)

Jersey Shore, NJ(Zone 7a)

Jeeez Louise.....I have waited my entire life to use that phrase instead of hearing it ^_^ You could have gone to your car and been back in plenty of time to get a few pics for us

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

What phrase? Full display??

Questa, NM(Zone 5b)

"Jeez Louise"

Cool, Louise! I'd love to see those turkeys.

Thanks for the nice words about my outfit, folks!

Southwest , NH(Zone 5b)

Lol... It's a Louise thing, Victor... I know just what you mean, Weez! :)

Thomaston, CT

Saw the same thing when I was taking the dogs for a ride the other day, Louise.....he was preening for a lone female, who wasn't even looking his way....I'd never seen them 'fan' before either...must be mating season....

Southwest , NH(Zone 5b)

That's so cool, isn't it!? Mating season for sure!!

Thomaston, CT

Robin barked so loudly, I thought he would expire....told him those were NOT "big black bitey bears"...that's what he looks for on that road.....surrounded by reservoir property....

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

I bark loudly when I'm trying to attract a mate. Not effective.

East Bridgewater, MA

Over 20 years ago, a young person was unhappy with "Louise" as her first name until she heard the song, "Every Little Breeze Seems to Whisper Louise" (Maurice Chevalier), and, happily, changed her mind.

A lovely name !

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

It's my nickname.

East Bridgewater, MA

Ummm...Victor...they were saying, "Loser."

Jersey Shore, NJ(Zone 7a)

LOL!!! Thanks BA, my uncle used to sing that song to me.

East Bridgewater, MA

I hope Victor didn't take the joke personally, he has an I.Q. of at least 140, so he should be self-confident...plus, he's probably heard the famous Groucho Marx quip, "I wouldn't want to join any club that would have me as a member."

(Comedy set-ups are difficult to resist, not just in the "Borscht Belt".)

Eastern Long Island, NY(Zone 7a)

IQ numbers don't mean much from what I've seen, nor do they have much to do with self confidence, that could be taken away easily.., but Victor's 'got one up' he's a New Yorker, he's tough and that's what counts,
- you gotta be tough to handle NY! lol!

- - love that Groucho quote! ☺

East Bridgewater, MA

A comedy set-up line is like "chum to a shark": there are some things that can't be resisted !

I grew up on George Carlin,

Steve Martin,

Mort Sahl,

The Smothers Brothers,

Bob Newhart,

Bill Cosby,

Lenny Bruce,

Monty Python,

and dozens more !!!

So, I apologize for rude jokes, but they originate from a comedy core (of 50 years ! ).

(My bad.)

Eastern Long Island, NY(Zone 7a)

George Carlin went to my HS, never liked that guy..
Absolutely love Steve Martin (A+++), The Smothers bros, & Bob Newhart's 'dry humor'.

Monty Python was too silly for me, Bill Cosby too smug for me, ..don't know much about the others, just didn't have the time to check them out, w/o compromising something else I had to do.
- Gave up on TV 5 yrs ago, it just ain't the same..

East Bridgewater, MA

In the mid-1960's, My parents got the comedy album, "The Button-Down Mind of Bob Newhart"; decades later, when I first got on the internet a decade ago, I went to Amazon.com and purchased Newhart's Compilation CD, and the comedy held up pretty well.

I love the "one-sided phone" monologues, they are very special !!!

(My favorite: the Abraham Lincoln conversation...the second, the "woman driver," with Bob as the driving instructor.)

LOL !

Eastern Long Island, NY(Zone 7a)

Bob was very pleasant to see and laugh with, he had a sincere dead pan face that would make me laugh regardless..
- good guy.

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

Loved the "woman driver". The line about..."Whew, I really didn't think you could make it", still makes me laugh.

Thomaston, CT

When I was in college, my dorm mates couldn't sleep unless they put a bunch of records on.....Bob Newhart's was one of them....at least we fell asleep laughing!

East Bridgewater, MA

Too bad Suzanne Pleshette (R.I.P.) departed too early, would've loved to have seen a reunion special...

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Hee hee - no biggie, BA (battle axe?? ^_^) Been called much worse by tougher women than you! As for the 'joke', I would have to rate it about 1/2 out of 10 - almost Howard Stern 'quality'.

Love Bob Newhart. Loved how he brought back Suzanne when his second series ended. He woke up back in the first series and said it was all a dream. Hilarious.

Never much of a Steve Martin fan. Carlin was very funny, but crude.

No one compares to the greats like Groucho, Steve Allen, Bugs Bunny, etc.

Cant stand Ellen Degenerate

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

After George Carlin was booed offstage at Westbury Music Theatre for making fun of returning vets without arms or some without legs, I had no use for him and never bought any of his records (back then) or CD's and refused to give them as gifts.

Hallowell, ME

How come no one mentioned Jack Benny. Loved George and Gracie, Bob Newhart, and the Smother Brothers. Also used to love to watch Laugh In and Hee Haw. Not much use for George Carlin or Ellen Degenerate. I love comedy anyway (and then there's always Victor!!!!):) I love come backs but have to watch out who I say them to.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Jack was very good, as was Henny Youngman, Rodney Dangerfield and others.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Jonathan Winters was another. I always admire people with a quick wit, as distinguished from those who can tell funny jokes or stories. Though still funny, those can be rehearsed, memorized, etc.

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

I think Don Rickles is HYSTERICAL

Jersey Shore, NJ(Zone 7a)

One of my favorites to watch on a talk show is Robin Williams...that man is manic!

Thomaston, CT

Just going to mention him....he & Billy Crystal announced part of a Mets game, & I was in stitches.....

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Williams and Winters were actually manic - diagnosed.

Thomaston, CT

That helps, I guess......I could never perform in front of anybody.....

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

Thanks, Louise. I just couldn't think of his name. Love Robin Williams and all of his ad lib lines - Winters, too!

I'm with you, Marilyn, definitely not one for public speaking. When I gave the eulogy for my beloved former neighbor the minister said he thought he'd have to pick me up from the floor - that's how bad I was shaking.

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

would the rosemary be up and growing yet?.. was planted in the ground on the slope.. looks dead to me

Eastern Long Island, NY(Zone 7a)

Don Knotts was one of my faves, not so much in the Mayberry series, but more in his movies.

- Takes practice to speak in public, DW's job sent her to classes to learn early-on, afterwards she's joined a few Toasters Clubs throughout the years to keep in practice.

Southwest , NH(Zone 5b)

Allison, rosemary is not a perennial in my zone (5). I'm not sure if it is for you or not. Has it come back in years past?

Am I the last to know Victor's IQ?????? What else is everyone keeping from me?????
