John Candy was another funny one.

Need help with searching....if anyone can find this for me I'd be very grateful.

I am looking for a chart that lists the total tornado count by year since they started recording in 1875, NOT the death count just the # of confirmed tornadoes by year.
I had seen it when the tornado had hit Mississippi but now I can't find it anywhere, because when I do the search everything for Joplin comes up

School assignment?

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

LOL

I was talking with my step mil and she was saying how she heard that morning that it was the worst year for tornandos....but I had thought it was just one aspect of it that was bad but the frequency comes in cycles and that the amount of them was not rare, so I found the death count chart by year

The 20's were really bad
1920 499
1921 202
1922 135
1923 110
1924 376
1925 794
1926 144
1927 540
1928 95
1929 274
Compare to the 2000's
wasn't really that bad
2000 40
2001 40
2002 55
2003 54
2004 35
2005 38
2006 67
2007 81
2008 125
2009 21
2010 45

Prior to 1950 tornado counts are considered inaccurate, radar was developed in the 1940's as a secret project, it's applications were military until the end of the war when other applications were found for the technology, including weather.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

But there is a lot of telltale evidence that one has struck. Radar is for real time predicting and tracking. The NWS still sends out teams to look at damage to determine if it was a tornado. Of course, now everyone has video!

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

They still only count tornadoes by eye witness accounts

Eastern Long Island, NY(Zone 7a)

No argument there, but how many teams would the NWS sent out in the 1920's or 30's? 1920 depression era midwest was pretty poor, with housing structures not sufficiently suitable to handle extreme weather. Hence a higher death toll.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

True. Certainly have doubts about the old stats. But this year has been a horror. So much more development now that even with no loss of life, there is always so much property damage.

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

It's also the area it hit, though. Take for instance the one that just hit Oklahoma, if it hit Oklahoma city, even if they had gotten advanced notice the death toll would have been HUGE.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Yes, Jen.

Hurricane season is still yet to come..

Thomaston, CT

Hurricanes don't bother me as much, had many more of them in CT when I was younger. The death tolls were high in the early years because there were no warning systems...now, the tornadoes are tracked, sirens sound, or folks have the NOAA radios.....I learned the importance of having those radios when the tornado hit The Villages at 3 am......

Geez, can't even swim in Florida right now......

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

I hate jellyfish, got stung bad in Virginia Beach when I was 10, the thing was HUGE. Orginally thought it was a coffee filter but as I got closer I saw the tentacles so I tried to backpedal. It got my arm from elbow to shoulder and then on the ankle when I went to swim away. I was screaming, it got me, it got me!!!!! all the lifeguards came running. Man that hurt!!!

Eastern Long Island, NY(Zone 7a)

The water gets pretty warm, not much relief from the Florida heat unless you're under it. (lol!)
- They've given me a slight rash and burning on my arms but it goes away a few hrs after rinsing off with fresh water, - depends on the type of jellyfish and if you're allergic or not..

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Wonder if people with peanut allergies are more susceptible.

Seriously?

I have always loved Ellen DeGeneres. She's funny, kindhearted and her jokes are clean. She doesn't make jokes at the expense of others.

IMPORTANT:

Please go up a few entries (posted by Victor) a doctor's personal account of Joplin, MO's situation.

(KevinMD.com, see above....extremely important, not to be skipped.)

Eastern Long Island, NY(Zone 7a)

Neutral on DeGeneres here, no praise/ no criticism...

- hope everything is ok in Joplin, never heard of the place before the tornado, regardless,
"yous pay your fare and yous take your chances", if you don't want to see a tornado, (which will have you shaking in your pants, because I've seen waterspouts which have done the same to me..),

- don't move to where they hang out when you look for a cheap retirement state!

Questa, NM(Zone 5b)

thanks for that heads up, BA. I usually skip those links because I'm worried I'll get lost in the internet. I'm glad I read that. The human spirit is a beautiful thing. There's a hero sleeping in each of us and that Dr's woke up that day.

Yes I have/had those bugs. They almost ate a zuchinni and cuke plant overnight!

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

What a lovely, wonderful Memorial Day Memory this young Lady will have!!!!!!! Watch the video..........touching.

I'm sure everyone has gotten the email about July having five Fri, Sat & Sundays. Supposedly, only once every 823 years. Weird.

Eastern Long Island, NY(Zone 7a)

No, no one sent me an e-mail telling me that. (lol!)

Thomaston, CT

The owner of Scheeper's & Van Englenen has died ...his obit was in our local paper. He was 85, & did a lot of civic things for Litchfield....I'm not sure if he was still involved in day-to-day things at the company......

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Wow - just got both catalogs yesterday.

Thomaston, CT

Me too.
