Teddy's plants

Lakeview, OH

I meant the other flowers, the sedum was uncovered by the wind and snow of winter.

The frost won't hurt your irises, Rose of Sharon or your roses. For your cosmos just cover them up with an inverted box or nursery pot with a brick or rock to keep them in place. Remove when the temperatures warm up during the day and recover if needed at night.

Lakeview, OH

Ok, thanks for your help and advice. I will cover them with a box before it gets dark. That's the one advantage of them being so close together, I think I have a box that will do the trick.

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

Very good.

Lakeview, OH

I just came in from working up the ground around the Irises and the Cosmos and the Rose of Sharon, it looks a lot better now, I hope I did not do a bad thing, we don't have a push mower to trim around them, so I used my hands and a garden trowel, that grass is more stubborn than I thought, it did not want to let go! I think I will go find the box that I will put over my Cosmos.

Lakeview, OH

I actually had to put 3 boxes on my Cosmos, so I hope it does the trick, I pulled something that I thought was a weed, looked closer and it was a Cosmos plant! So I lost one, but it could not be helped, the rest of them are covered up with Pepsi boxes. It is not supposed to be windy so I didn't put anything on the boxes to hold them down.

Lakeview, OH

Its a good thing I put boxes over my Cosmos, my neighbor who gave me the Cosmos has a pear tree that got hit hard, the leaves are all droopy. I saved the boxes if we have another frost warning I will cover them up again. As you can see a few of them are really getting tall! I just wish I had not put them so close to the trellis, it makes them hard to cover up if there is another hard frost.

You are allowed to lift them and replant them. It's better done now than even a day later.

Make sure you water them in well. They are not sedum and can't retain the water as sedum's fleshy leaves can.

Lakeview, OH

The boxes did a great job and we are not supposed to have any more frost for awhile, it is supposed to get warmer at night, so everything is okay. I am going to keep them just in case. I just did not want to mess them up by lifting them.

This is the smallest Rose of Sharon bush I have, It is between the latticework and the house, I didn't think it would get any green on it yet, I don't think it will bloom this year it is too small, but the leaves will be pretty. I think two of my ROS bushes are dead, I know everyone says they look like they are dead, but these have brown stalks and no green at all.

My Cosmos is really growing good, I went out and looked at it, and it is taking of! I don't think I will put any plant food on it, it seems to be growing on its own really good.

Lakeview, OH

Well, one of the neighbor's Irises has opened up, and it is beautiful! I couldn't get a picture because it was too dark and besides I did not have my camera. If you want me to, I will take a pic tomorrow and show you what my Irises will look like whenever they bloom. I could not tell if it was bearded or not, but it looked kind of star shaped and it was gorgeous!

Lakeview, OH

As I said earlier, my neighbor's Irises are blooming, so I went over this morning and got a couple of pictures of the one already opened up and the ones partly opened. This first one is the completely opened one, it is a tall bearded Iris, I was wrong, it is not completely opened, but enough to be gorgeous!

Going to plant some Morning Glories, are they easy to start? The package says to soak them in warm water overnite to help them germinate. Then I will mix them, I have two packages of blue and one of red, Ithink I will plant them tomorrow and see what happens.

Stamford, CT(Zone 6b)

I expect you'll never have to plant them again.

Lakeview, OH

I am going to mix them together and have them go up the lattice, there is two packages of blue and one of red. I got some bad news Monday morning, my father passed away Sunday night at Springfield Hospital. He was 77 years old. I forgot about soaking the seeds last night, too much going through my mind, so I will do it tonight. Have a good day, it looks like it is going to be a warm one.

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

So sorry for your loss.

Lakeview, OH

Thank you very much. My Cosmos is growing like a weed, every day I look at them and it seems like they grew bigger the previous night!

Stamford, CT(Zone 6b)

I am sorry for your loss, too. I hope you will find comfort working with the soil and plants.

Lakeview, OH

I do, it helps put my mind on something more productive instead of dwelling on dad.

I am trying to hold it together, today we go to the funeral home to see him and have a private family viewing, then Saturday is the funeral. So forgive me if I sometimes put something on here that has nothing to do woth flowers or birds. I might have a bloom coming on one of my Irises, just maybe, I planted my morning glories this morning, so hopefully they will come up and be pretty.

Prairieville, LA(Zone 9a)

Not to worry, Teddy. Everyone understands grief in one form another...just try to gather all your good memories to help cushion your grief and pour your sorrow into the ground. Beautiful things will grow and bring you joy.. My parents died just a year apart when I was in my late 30's....my garden helped me deal with their loss in ways I can't explain.

Lakeview, OH

Does this picture mean what I think it does? This is one and there is another one doing it, I don't want to get my hopes up, but please, please tell me if this is blooms coming on?

Your iris is forming its bud now. It will probably take 2-3 weeks. IIt will be a while till you see a bud emerge from its sheath. My tightly wrapped buds show up at least a week before they open.

You cannot always tell the color of the iris by the color on the bud. That color may be just a margin color on the bloom. It is always a joy.

Stamford, CT(Zone 6b)

If I am not mistaken, your cosmos will get MUCH taller before you see blooms. They are often a couple of feet high and can be much higher.

Lakeview, OH

I am just glad I am going to get buds, that helps with what I have been going through. I know the Cosmos won't bloom yet, but I was all excited about my Iris, they WILL bloom won't they?

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

Yes.

Lakeview, OH

Does it look like these plants are making blooms yet? There are 3 different pictures.

Lakeview, OH
