Winter 2010-2011: Growing plants under lights indoors! Pt 2

Mesilla Park, NM

Thanks for posting a photo of the seeds Dany,
mine are Solid Jet Black, I do have some others that are really white, some dark tan also. I'm going to have fun and compare/grow them all at the same time. I am also wondering, as far as the white and tan seeds, is this, if when the seeds are really fresh they are white, and turn tan when they completely dry or age a little. Every year for the last 10 years I've been purchasing packets of I. alba with intentions of growing them, but never have, thus I have about 12 packets.

You know, none of those links show a photo of the I. alba Meekerii flower, I assume it is the same as the tan/white seeded I. alba? Even when I googled, I could not find a photograph of just the flower itself. Anyone have a photo of one?

A.

edited to add this link: http://www.seabean.com/guide/Ipomoea_alba/ photos of the flower.

you can see the dark seeds, but the statement also says that the seeds can be tan or light colored. The leaves look like I. alba, chucks.. I wish they were the Meekerii instead, that one had very unusual leaves. I'll have to plant some of each to find out what it is.

Dany, what type of leaves do your dark seeds produce?

Oh, I love those leaves... very nice. They remind me of one of the Aristolocia plants I had..

Debra - Love your photos!!! Your species vines look great! Did you cut the Sticto back or did it go dormant on it's own? You Pink Moonvine sprouting leaves look very healthy! Can't wait to see the blooms from that one.

What is SP. Karrabeck?

I love your Pink Frost I. Batata! The one I had unfortunately bit the dust from the frost a year ago. :-( And I love the lobata, too! Both wonderful vines, as are all the ones you have growing like gangbusters in your basement!

Antoinette - What a great idea to grow both I. alba species vines to do a comparison. I'm also wondering about the scent of the Ipomoea alba 'Meekerii' . Am curious to know if it has the same wonderful scent?

Dany - I had heard that the blooms on Ipomoea alba 'Meekerii' were smaller. I am curious as to what the leaves look like, too? Is the texture different than the tan seed I. alba? Beautiful bloom photo, btw!

My most profound apologies to everyone including Emma. I was having a very bad day!

(Becky) in Sebastian, FL(Zone 10a)

Jon - We love ya! Everyone has a bad day (or two or three in my case) ... some weeks it doesn't pay to get out of bed, IMHO! lol

(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

I was hoping someone would tell me what is wrong with my Alba buds dropping. two more uprights have turned downwards.. I am gonna chop it all back Like I did the stictocardia! *I Chopped it back* Becky. It didn't go dormant like the pink moon vine. The two weird species of seeds I got from Australia were called Marrbeck and karabeck, named after their townships I think, but were wild forms.

(Becky) in Sebastian, FL(Zone 10a)

Debra - Ugh! I am sorry to hear about the dropping buds. Hmmm ... have you inspected it for pests. Another thought might be that it needs watering. I had that happen when I didn't water one of my vines. The smaller buds dropped off and the blooms never fully opened until I realized what was wrong and gave it a good watering. The next day, one of the blooms opened up perfectly! Just a thought.

The Marrbeck and karabeck are Pink Moon Vines? Or some odd MGs that not much is known about?

(Becky) in Sebastian, FL(Zone 10a)

Debra - I thought of something else ... my Moonflower vines usually bloom at dusk. Is it possible that yours are getting too much light at night? They may need a period of darkness to make buds and bloom fully.

(Becky) in Sebastian, FL(Zone 10a)

This the light blue Diluted Fuji no Muraski. It turns this lavender color as it ages. Got my attention right away when I saw these blooms. :-)

Only tears fill my eye at the profound nonsense that goes on here! Why as lovers of mg can't we all be friends? Even though our perspectives may be different. Here is the hand of friendship offered to all, we all share a love of morning glories and yet seem to hate one another! I just dont see this on other forums so what is wrong with us?
I know this is about history, man put it to bed! Lets all go forward into the future and enjoy our passion! Some of us love the science and some of us just love to grow them, we possibly could not exist without the other.

(Becky) in Sebastian, FL(Zone 10a)

Jon - I am not sure what other folks intentions are or what their perspective is, but I personally just enjoy growing MGs, sharing information & photos, and trading/sharing seeds! I don't sell seeds. I don't have any hidden agenda. I don't think I am better than anyone else here. I'm just straight up! I have many awesome friends on this forum and they know how much I appreciate them! And Jon, you know that you are one of those awesome friends! :-) :-)

And ... I am a firm believer that you reap what you sow. I prefer to sow peace, honesty, generosity, and kindness! I like to think that others here feel the same way as I do! :-) This is a wonderful forum and I am sure it will continue to be so. :-) As we say at my workplace ... Peace, Love, and Turtle Power! :-)

Becky, I have no idea what the two Austrailian vines will bring me, like panduratas, they are hard for me to get to germinate, so when a wild mg does show, I rejoice.
The Pink Moon vine was the one that was a nice fat cuadex with leaves all summer. That one did go dormant. that was the one sprouting new leaves I showed above. The one in the closet that looks like a hump of wood is the sticto that I cut back after it bloomed. ( I was trying to make cuttings, remember>?) Anyway, the Vines all get water, no pests that I can see, and you may be right about the light. I also have a tendency to turn things, so maybe I keep severing the budding vine parts.
I am still going to cut back all the vines, the woodrose and the I. Lutea are entwined into each other fiercely..
Here is Ace of Spades, awake and being trained to a standard.

Debra - That's neat that the Austrailian vines are a mystery! Cool! I hope you have success growing them! :-)

I actually understood about the rest of your vines. I did forget that you were cutting your Sticto to try to root cuttings, hence the dormancy of yours now. I think mine will do better once I get it moved into a bigger container! It is a challenge at times to keep all the vines under lights separated! LOL! The vines do like to travel all over the place! LOL! Your I. batatas collection is awesome!!! I never fully appreciated them until you shared them!

Something that I am wondering about ... maybe someone here on the forum knows...

Do the perennial vines need an annual dormant period? I know the hours of light is an important factor for many of them. But do they need to "rest" for a period of time to remain healthy? I have so few perennial vines, that I have little to no experience growing them until now. Mine are only about 6 months old, so I have no idea.

(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

If your prennials are leafing and growing they are redy to keep going, when I bring mine in, if I keep them under a lot of light and feed them they continue to grow, I let the caudex plants "rest" so that they come back stronger every eyar. This is what I do. My setosa " rested" but is now leafing out, same as the purple evening vine ( or lavender what ever)

Woodrose is vining like sticto did in the same spot last year, it is under a window, but it is a drafty area, so the light I put it under helps with the cold. Sticto did not get any of the black soot or crystals this winter in the closet. It doesn't like cold drafts.
I. Lind also went dormant, I think from the shock of being transplanted, but it is going strong now. Somewhere down here the pandy is still dormant, and so is the albivenia. When they pop up, I will know where they are LOL..

If we had a real glass green house, nothing would have to go dormant I would think, but I am not an expert.
wood rose to the right, I. Lutea to the left.. this is where sticto was last year..

Becky/Debra: I noticed a clematis in one of the earlier posts, but can't tell which species or hybrid cultivar it is. There certainly are deciduous species and hybrid clematis which need a dormant cool/cold period and/or severe pruning to bloom well. Many of the native or adapted species found in southern gardens don't need any cold to give a big & beautiful flower display.

edit: I'm thinking that the "perennial vine" comments were meant to refer to other Convolvulaceous plants... yes?/no? Sorry if I veered off the true course! ~Nick

Turtle Power - that is a great slogan for my gang.

Tokyo, Japan(Zone 10a)

Today we had the big one, now I understand why I felt the way I did yesterday I new it was coming and thought it would kill us all! Sorry to all of you.
These things I know but it's hard to interpret ones gut feelings or ones dreams.

(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

Jon, All I could do was worry about you today. I am so sorry for all the devastation. Truly I prayed you and your family was safe. You are very special to us here.

(Becky) in Sebastian, FL(Zone 10a)

Jon - You know what ... I immediately thought today ... when I was emailing you last night that you must have felt or known something was "in the air" there in Japan. I've never known you to be so upset! Two hours after last corresponding with you, the earthquake hit. I get chills just thinking about it ...

I haven't stopped praying for you and your family!!!! And I will continue to do so and do anything else I can to personally help you and your family. I remember 2004 hurricane devastation here. I'll never forget. And that is nothing compared to what you are dealing with in Japan currently.

Jon - dear friend - please know that many, many folks here are thinking of and praying for you and your family. We will do what we can for you from here. {{{{{Hugs}}}}}

Please be safe. I hope Akie can be reunited with you and the boys very soon! I wish I could be over there right now to help in any way that I can. I can't imagine going through this in a foreign country (speaking just a little Japanese), with two very young children, and being separated from my spouse. Not to mention the continued danger of aftershocks. What an absolute nightmare!!!

Mesilla Park, NM

I thought about that too, this morning, that Jon was feeling something that bothered him yesterday. I can't imagine having to go through what they going through.

Tokyo, Japan(Zone 10a)

Thanks guys and you are quite right I did know, but not what!

Gautier, MS

Jon, my thoughts and prayers are for you and your family. Life is fragile handle with prayer. Praying that everything will turn out ok.

(Ronnie), PA(Zone 6b)

Here are a few blooms from one of Emma's mystery packs I received in the group trade. There were two seeds in the pot. Pretty little flowers...the one looks like a kikyou.

Aww Ronnie those are LOVELY! I had to cut down all the vines they were choking each other out ( the moon vines) got I. Lind and Setosa off to themselves now.The long stems with buds I put in the bubbler tub in a flower frog, hope it works for rooting.,

(Ronnie), PA(Zone 6b)

Thanks Debra, I started out with quite a few others but lost a lot to whitefly infestation.

(Becky) in Sebastian, FL(Zone 10a)

Jon - Still have you and your family as well as everyone in Japan on my mind and in my prayers!

Ronnie - Nice blooms! One reminds me of "Mutant Blue Needle Leaf Nanding x Jishi" that I grew from a cross from Dee and Jishi. http://davesgarden.com/community/blogs/i/54164/ Sorry you lost so many others to whitefly. Those look very healthy! How'd you keep those from the whitefly? I know others here have had problems with whitefly, too!

Debra - I think I would save any perennials over any annual vines, too!

(Ronnie), PA(Zone 6b)

Thanks Becky, I'll have to look at an old pic of one of my Mutant Blue Needle Leaf Nanding that I grew from Arlan a few years ago and see if there is a resemblance. The whitefly is on that one too just lucky enough to get some blooms. Funny that one is in the smallest pot of all of them and it's the biggest one (?) little 6'' green pot.

Mesilla Park, NM

Well, maybe we could each send Jon a survival seeds package, with mgs, veggies, etc..I don't think their govt. would mind us sending garden seeds to our friends there. I don't know, what do you guys think? He would at least have that to fill his gardens.

(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

Great Idea! ;D

(Becky) in Sebastian, FL(Zone 10a)

That's a nice idea. Let's ask Jon what he thinks. I offered more MG seeds to him this past Fall and he said he didn't need any as he was working on his home extension and didn't know how much gardening he was going to have time for this year. Veggie seeds would certainly be a good idea, though! Nothing like fresh picked veggies, especially if food prices start soaring there because of this disaster!

I think he is going to have his hands full doing the home repairs from the damage. It's going to take Japan quite some time to recover from all of this. The reactors have been on the news currently. I hope that doesn't become another major life-threatening issue in Japan. They don't need any more disasters!!!!

Mesilla Park, NM

Plants and seeds are like Jello.... you always have room for Jello!
lol

(Becky) in Sebastian, FL(Zone 10a)

LOL! Jon can't receive plants. His mother tried to send some and customs got them. But seeds hopefully won't be an issue. I think veggie seeds would be a really useful idea. I've got some I can share with him so think I will definitely put together something to send him. :-)

Mesilla Park, NM

Yeah, I got some great bush bean collections and a couple of other collections of peppers and tomatoes that will be coming soon. I thought even a few couple of seeds would make a few meals, especially the bush type, those do great in containers..

(Becky) in Sebastian, FL(Zone 10a)

I totally agree with you on that, Antoinette! I have tomato, beans, lettuce, green peppers, cucumbers, watermelon, etc. that I could send to him! :-)

Jacksonville, TX(Zone 8a)

Ronnie,

Your blooms are very interesting
http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/p.php?pid=8422602

Are these all on the same vine?
The Kikyo photo on the left has some blizzard in the pattern that is pretty. That leaf by the photo does look like the Kikyo leaves ?? but the other leaves do not. So, you for sure have some kind of natural cross there.

Becky, I did grow your 'Mutant Blue Needle Leaf Nanding', but not your cross, in 2009. And, I agree the bloom on the right does look very much like your cross doesn't it!

My guess is that these crossed with a Blue Blizzard that I had growing near the Kikyo 'Midnight Star', or possibly reverting back to what I crossed it with which was a Dark Blue [regular MG] w/ Margined Picotee

Here is my original cross that I grew for the first time last year that I call 'Midnight Star' because of the extra white Picotee Edge especially at the edges. Some of the blooms had a slight blizzard.

Mesilla Park, NM

Whoa, those look a lot like Karen05's flowers.. did you use kikyo ice to cross your stuff with Emma? I think you purchased several packs of seeds from her the last couple of years. Or are they from the seeds you bought from Dee too?

(Becky) in Sebastian, FL(Zone 10a)

Ronnie and Emma - All I know is that they look very similar to the Mutant Blue Needle Leaf Nanding seeds that I shared with everyone from my grow-out of seeds that I originally received from Dee. Crosses are often unstable, so I look at what genes are appearing in the current vine and blooms. :-) :-) :-)

(Becky) in Sebastian, FL(Zone 10a)

Emma - Pretty picture of blooms! Those do look a lot like gardener2005's Kikyo Ice! I grew some of those this past year that she shared with me and they look a lot like your photo! :-)
