Winter 2010-2011: Growing plants under lights indoors! Pt 2

Jacksonville, TX(Zone 8a)

No, these seeds were from JMG Dark Blue seed pack that I used to cross with. I also still have Kikyo seeds from dee that I haven't grown out yet. In fact, I have a lot of seeds from him that I haven't grown out yet. Seems like Kikyo Ice has more White in the blooms rather than just at the points. Another seed that came out of a JMG Kikyo MIX pack was a really large Solid Purple. Much larger than the regular Kikyo sizes. I think some of those went into the seed mix for the seed swap as well.

Emma, the flowers are on different vines in the same pot. Both seeds came from one of you packages marked #15 if that helps.

Hi Ronnie -
I did write down what seeds were in each numbered bag, but I had a computer crash so I don't have that information handy at the moment. Actually, I did just get my word docs. reformatted to my new computer, so now I just need to find where I saved the info and will LYK what MGs you have . . . Thanks!

Emma - That's a shame. I hope you can recover than information.

I am glad I sent everyone the same cultivars/crosses in the seed swap. Much easier to remember what I sent! :-)

(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

Not me, I sent a few of everything to everyone, but not all got the same, so hope to see some grow outs from those. I love Morning Glorys of all kinds..

I sometimes think Flicker is the way to go, even if you lose your computer, you can always find your photos on flicker on another computer, it's a storage area for me. I love it.

Well goodnight ladies, gotta watch T.V. to get sleepy..lol

Debra - Cool! I am sure everyone will be thrilled with what they got and grow out from you.

I always send the same to everyone. I was worried someone might feel slighted, if someone else got something they wanted. And it's easier for me to ID them if everyone gets the same cultivars/crosses. I know many folks here may not be too concerned about the ID, but it's always nice to have a name for collecting and labeling them for future trades. ;-)

I am growing out only 1 seed from each participant's seed packet. Room and containers is an issue for me, personally. And time that it takes to properly care for them!

(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

I planted all five of MGMANS seeds today in cups. I planted at least one of all my bags of seeds from last year, and several from Dany and Helena and Jackie so far. I am getting more re-cycled cups from work monday, so I can grow out seeds that I didn't get grown out last year from people.

(Becky) in Sebastian, FL(Zone 10a)

Sounds like a good plan, Debra! When is the last frost date for KS?

(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

Heck, who knows. I have my cups in clear plastic carry cases. I am ready for spring, but not ready to put mgs into the gorund. Sometimes we get frost in april. ugh.

(Becky) in Sebastian, FL(Zone 10a)

Geez! I thought your frost threat was over in March. Well, at least you can get them started now and then just transplant them outside whenever you feel that Spring has finally arrived. :-)

I should've started mine about a month ago. I just kept expecting February to have some more freezing temps! So thought it best to wait. Best laid plans ... ha!

(Becky) in Sebastian, FL(Zone 10a)

Do we change our clocks forward one hour tonight? My dh says so! Ugh!

Jacksonville, TX(Zone 8a)

Yes, Luckily all of my word docs. and photos I had on my external hard drive. The computer guys that I bought my new computer from had to reformat the information since my new computer has Windows 7. I am keeping the information on my external hard drive as well as purchasing a second external HD for photos that I will take this year since I take so many. I am now learning you can't have too many external hard drives. I do good just to type and post my photos . . . lol
I think I sent each person 2 separate packets of mixed seeds, and each person got one set of each. So, actually everyone did receive the same seeds, it is just that I grew so many mixes last year on purpose so that will be fun to see who gets what seeds.

And, many are some of my new crosses. I had several Youjiro crosses that after I collected the seeds from each that I wanted, I then just let the vines go and obviously they grew among each other. So those will be fun to see if any new natural crosses come from those since they cross very easily. These are all different and unusual colors for Youjiros, including a Mauve, Magenta, Gray and a few other colors.

Deba - Love your lobata! :-) One of my top 10 favorite species MGs!♥

(Ronnie), PA(Zone 6b)

Nice Debra, I could never get them to flower here.

(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

Ronnie these would do well inside with lights, or in a window.. mine are in a shower CADDY, UNDER THE CELING LIGHT DOWNSTAIRS.oops, caps lock, new laptop and me are getting to know each other.

(Zone 7a)

Ronnie, one of the problems that my back issues create for me is that it's painful to tie and train things up.

So, thank you Debra, because you've just given me a great idea that might also be useful to Ronnie and others, too. What if we planted our vines to hang down from hanging pots that we hung from our arbors and trellises? In the past, DH and I made a couple of pergolas as well with which this might work.

The only downside I can think of is that - you know those so-called "squirrel-proof" bird feeders that look like Darth Vader's helmet? I don't know how DH and I are still functional, we've bumped noggins into that thing I don't know how many times - tiny garden grr. Not sure about adding hanging pots to things to dodge?

Ronnie, I have a small amount of I. lobata seed - howja like a couple so you can get an early start indoors? Maybe I'll sow my seed in a recycled water bottle, like Debra, along with a few other goodies (moonflower vine?) and suspend them in an uninhabited window:) Apologies to others that I don't have more lobata seed to go around.

Jon - eloquently said - http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/p.php?pid=8419401 -

"Only tears fill my eye at the profound nonsense that goes on here! Why as lovers of mg can't we all be friends? Even though our perspectives may be different. Here is the hand of friendship offered to all, we all share a love of morning glories and yet seem to hate one another! I just dont see this on other forums so what is wrong with us?
I know this is about history, man put it to bed! Lets all go forward into the future and enjoy our passion! Some of us love the science and some of us just love to grow them, we possibly could not exist without the other. "

Continuing prayers going out to Jon and everyone in Japan.

Becky - new thread? I'll repost there about the Ipomoea lobata when I get back later tonight.

Karen

We live by choice without a tv. I didn't know until just now how bad the hardships have become in the last 24 hours. Wish there was more I could do besides donate and pray. Jon, we love you.
