Winter 2010-2011: Growing plants under lights indoors! Pt 2

(Becky) in Sebastian, FL(Zone 10a)

Debra - Did your alba bloom yet? I planted several alba seeds in a container outside by my fence. I absolutely love this species! And the scent is amazing. I hope you get lots and lots of blooms on yours! :-)

Your blue Shibori is beautiful! I had never seen a true blue flower until I started growing MGs! :-)

(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

Becky, they are about too, but still nothing yet. P~ Maybe tonight if I stare at them?

(Becky) in Sebastian, FL(Zone 10a)

Debra - Maybe we should ALL go back and stare at your photo and chant, "Bloom, bloom!" LOL! Having enjoyed those amazing blooms when I grew them, it is well worth the wait! :-)

Houston, TX

Joeswife, that nce healthy blue glory. Blue's are my favorite...

(Becky) in Sebastian, FL(Zone 10a)

I forgot to turn the grow lights on this morning so the vines went all day without lights. But ... I got some neat colors on the blooms when I went in to check on them.

Another vine with odd colored blooms.

This vine has about as close to a red bloom as I've seen on an I. nil. Small, sweet little bloom!

Wow! There you go again, Becky! You've inspired me to try some "lights out" experiments. Too cool!

Houston, TX

Great show Becky and I love your idea with the shelves and lights. True stroke of genius.

(Becky) in Sebastian, FL(Zone 10a)

Nick - Who would have ever guessed you'd get such odd colors from lack of light! LOL! And the blooms were still open this late at night! Love it! Ya never know what to expect when you do something different with MGs ...

(Becky) in Sebastian, FL(Zone 10a)

Thanks, Dee! Cheap and easy to assemble. :-) My kinda grow stations. :-)

(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

Cool colours, Becky. I keep missing mine.. Alba is still growing very long buds.. no blooms yet.. * sigh*

Thanks, Debra. I thought that was neat to get something to radically different than the usual sunlight blooms. Always a surprise with MGs!

Love your Purple/Blue Flaked I. purpurea!!! One of my favorite solid shaped blooming I. purps!

Jacksonville, AR(Zone 7b)

Great colors Becky.
Nice flaked Debra.

(Becky) in Sebastian, FL(Zone 10a)

Thank you, Jackie!

What new cultivar are you looking forward to growing this year?

Mesilla Park, NM

I'm going to grow out more Thumbelina mgs, they are so tiny and I'm running out of seeds for that one, they are really cute little bells and I'm thinking it will be worthwhile to grow more. Did anyone I sent seeds to grow it yet?

A.

(Becky) in Sebastian, FL(Zone 10a)

I don't think you sent me any of those. Or did you? I'm getting forgetful at times! LOL!

Mesilla Park, NM

Yes, I sent you some, they are the smallest of the Purpureas. They would probably do well in baskets too. I found these seeds at my son's house when he first moved there, I had never seen them before.

(Becky) in Sebastian, FL(Zone 10a)

Oh yes! I remember now when you mentioned your son's house! I will have to grow some of them in a basket. I have just the basket for them, too! Thanks for pointing them out. I have a lot of seeds from you and others from trades and I never know what to grow each time. So many choices! I like the odd MGs. It's fun and interesting to grow something I've not grown before. :-)

(Becky) in Sebastian, FL(Zone 10a)

Well ... I'm off to bed. I can't wait to see what everyone is growing this year! I know y'all have some good seeds and there are going to be lots and lots of blooms this year from everyone. The power of positive thinking ~:~:~:~:~:~:~

Reidsville, NC

Does anyone have pictures of how these would be displayed outside? I thinke they are all beautiful and have two varities under my grow light now.

(Becky) in Sebastian, FL(Zone 10a)

lblackwell - Welcome!

There a numerous threads with tons of photos of how different gardeners display their vines. This was one of the last threads from 2010:
http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/1131229/

But you can skim through the photos of older threads to get more ideas. Or wait until many of us start posting the 2011 photos of our garden areas where we are growing MGs.

Becky, I hope I can find time to go thru all my pks soon to start deciding which ones to grow this yr. Still hoping DH will help me clear some fence line. I could grow an extra 20 or 30 in the ground.
Pandy takes up a lot of room on his side of the fence, lol

Jackie - I am sure whatever you grow this year will be a true delight to see. That chain link fence is ideal for growing vines on. Nothing better, IMHO! :-) Gee ... what can you do to talk your dh or other family members into helping you clear along the ground of the fence???? LOL! Some special meal they all like? The more people helping, the faster such a job would go! ;-)

That is a beautiful photo of your Pandy and JMG vines!!!

Jacksonville, AR(Zone 7b)

Becky, Thanks, I'm sure it will take some form of bribery, lol

(Zone 7a)

Debra, I have to add my praises for that blue-on-blue blizzard you shared with us here - http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/p.php?pid=8396989

Becky, gorgeous circus of morning glories

Dany - how do we say "Circus of morning glories" in French? "Cirque du what? Cirque du Trumpets or Bells or ? I always loved the phrase "Cirque du Soleil" (Circus of the Sun)

Patootie - looking forward to your 'glorified' fence next summer heehee

(Becky) in Sebastian, FL(Zone 10a)

Thanks, Karen!

One photo for the evening and then I am off to bed. Was checking my vines and saw that this bud is about to bloom on the Stictocardia Bereviensis! Whoo hoo! I'll be checking it in the morning. This vine has about 10 buds on it. Such a baby vine that I am so surprised to see so many buds!

(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

I am excited for you! YAY!

Jacksonville, AR(Zone 7b)

Anxious to see your bloom pics Becky. When I 1st bought a Stictocardia, it came from Logees and was also a baby vine. It was blooming in no time, but stopped
blooming in the heat of summer, starting back in late fall, early winter
I hate it that I finally killed mine.

(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

How did you kill it , Jackie? Mine was hacked to the bottom and it is sprouting leaves again.

Jacksonville, AR(Zone 7b)

It got so weak from the bugs that I got tired of trying to save it. Or could have been the 3 inches of water that seeps into my ghouse during the winter rains. It was in a 14 inch pot since it had been huge at one time so maybe just rotted sitting there in all that water.
When it floods overnight it is sometime the next day before I get down to the ghouse.
Thought I would just try again later from seeds.

Norfolk, VA

Here is a sneek peak of the F2 offspring of the 3 way cross(Early call pink x Early call blue)x Large flowered pink and white blizard NOID. Can't wait to see the flower. Nice flowers y'all;-)

Tony - Your babies are looking great! Nice sunny window you have them in! :-)

Debra & Jackie - This was well worth the wait! The color of those blooms is really beautiful! And the bloom was larger than I was expecting. (Though not as large as most of the JMG blooms.) It's got buds developing on the newest growing vine branches, too. How often does it bloom every year? Is it a seasonal bloomer or will it bloom all growing season? It will be in a container that I can move indoors into the garage in winter, if needed. :-)

Here is a photo of it right before it opened up. Looked like it was going to burst open! LOL!

Here is the photo of the bloom fully open! Very attractive!

Final photo is a another close-up of the bloom with pollen that I dusted all over the stigma. It produced a lot of pollen, so I am going to hand pollinate each bloom in the hopes that I get seeds from this vine. The seed originally came from Reunion Island from GordonHawk. :-)

Most of my vines are blooming, but during the week I miss them because of work. I did manage to get this photo of the "Black NOID" from Colin. I don't know what cultivar this is, but I really, really like it a lot. I am hoping to get seeds from it. I've not seen anything quite like it before. I am sure it is a Japanese cultivar and possibly one from KU. Many of the blooms have been producing those little throat flags.

I missed the photo opportunity the day before when it had 7 blooms on it! It was really pretty! Life does distract me from my flowers much of the time! LOL!

Becky, beautiful stictocardia and Black no id.

(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

Becky your blooms are beautiful, and the sticto looks a little different from mine. Yours looks more "flowery" . Beautiful. I found out there are more than one kind of sticto. I am after seeds of the ones I don't have. LOL

Gautier, MS

Beautiful blooms Becky!
