mjs, great find. I really like my Dischidia ovata.

Debra, I agree with Rita. Did you find your Alocasia Loco, locally? If so, I am looking forward to it hitting the stores around here. It's a "sport" from Poly.

Rita, that is a very nice size tuber from your Borneo Giant. I'm yet to grow that one. I "had" a nice looking Tacca a few years ago but I never got to view a bloom before I lost it.

(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

The Loco Poly was at our Lowes, on the clearance rack. Some of them were already going dormant. I should have bought more, But since my other Polys are dormant, and mt other cool one from last year never woke up, I decided to just get two. I immediately put pyrethins in the soil , as their plants always have horrible big fungus gnats in the pots. I do mean BIG.
I found one crawling out as I was looking at it in the light here at home, and couldn't believe how big it was. I thought it was a small fly.
Any ways, Rachel, I will save you one of them. ( not the gnat, but the Poly, Loco)
I would go back there, but we are in a horrible blizzard right now with temps in the near zero range, and this is after a nice almost 70 degree weekend.
I never heard of a watermelon hoya before.

Kay thanks for the offer, but all my moss you sent is thriving, and some has hopped around to other places already..(one made it to the chalice vine and I have no idea how that got there)

The Amaryllis blooms are beautiful. I still have not ever seen one of them in real life, but I have the orginal bulb my daughter Rose gave me one year, it just leafs out.
PreGirl, I am so impressed by your figs! Good Job! I want one, and this spring will go alooking for one that is maybe a couple years old. Last Night I worked on a few seed boxes for a couple of you .. Rita, I have some new and exciting seeds from Belize!
Dzzy, and PreGirl, I mite shorten your user names, but I am sure glad you have come to visit us! Welcome to the bestest Tropical Plant forum in the world.!
Kay, I will be sure to send a pretty drool mop with your box ... LOL ;D
The best thing about February is : it is the shortest month of the year and we are getting closer to Spring!
awwww isn't this Kansas Pink Bindweed baby cute? ( Yes, it is a weed)

Stellar day today. Temps warm and balmy. I worked in the greenhouse, cleaned, moved a bunch of plants back out to hopefully take advantage of rain we are supposed to get in the next day or two. Night time not supposed to go below 40. Ahhhhhhhhhhh, but I am worried about the one's in the way of this nasty blizzard. I have family in Ohio, Northwestern MD and PA...I sure don't miss living up there.
Budda Belly is happy.

I still have Queen Emma that you sent me , Rita... I am being very patient, as I think it might Bloom for me this year.. I have posted somewhere that I have a Live Sweet Autumn Clematis growing here, it is from seed. It has climbed the Moon Vine trellis .. Does anyone want any of this? ( This Plant In particular) It is to the very right of the trellis there.

MJ, thanks so much for showing the Buddah Belly, mine is still just a pole... yours tells me what I need to expect.. again, thanks. That is what I love about this family here..
Rita, this canna doesn't want to sleep. It was cut back when I brought it in.

ardisiia: Someone told me those little Lawn Orchids don't transplant well. I dug the one up from the Tecoma Stans pot and put it in a little pot of it's own ... will see how it fares.

GaGirl: I keep going back and looking at the photo's of your gorgeous orchids and that pink Cattleya that you said looks like Cotton Candy is really beautiful! Is it fragrant? I also really love the "Nun's Orchid"/Phaius in your photo here: http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/p.php?pid=8337853 That is really stunning! I've had a Phaius tankervilliae for quite a few years, planted it in the ground, dug it up, replanted it in the ground, dug it up again ... it's in a container now but hasn't been doing real well for the past couple of years ... probably mad at me because I can't make up my mind about where I want it planted!

Love those pink Hibiscus! The one in Debra's photo looks a lot like some we dug out and threw away about 6 years ago. We had planted hibiscus around the entire front and side of our house many years ago and they grew so fast I couldn't keep them pruned below window level. They got so thick and so tall we couldn't see out of the windows so we finally decided to rip them out.

Rita: Nice photo's, which Impatiens is that pictured? Very pretty foliage ... looks different from the I'mpatiens I'm used to down here. I will have to look up Ruttaya, that's a neat looking plant with a pretty flower! I had a Black Tacca chantrieri (black Bat Flower plant) a long time ago. It suffered when I was traveling back and forth due to my mom being sick before she passed. It bloomed two times in the years I had it and the blooms are really unusual and very pretty! Wish I had a picture but it was lost with thousands of other pic's and files when my laptop crashed a year or so ago. I never used to do backups but now I try and back up at least once a week.

PerennialGirl: Congratulations and great growing on that Fig! Y'all amaze me with your ability to grow some of these plants indoors! Love the Amaryllis ... I had a Pasadena but gave most of my Amaryllis bulbs to my sister in Fort Lauderdale. They didn't seem to re-bloom for me but go crazy in her garden!

Debra: Gee, I thought I had a full time job with the plants I have ... you humble me with that collection of yours. I know the amount of work it takes to care for such a large number of different types of plants ... my hat's off to you gal! LOL, the older I get, the shorter my attention span seems to be and I am not the greatest plant mom at times. :(

mjsponies: Love the Dischidia ovata! You should add that photo to Plant Files: http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/57418/ There's currently only one photo of D. ovata listed.

I have never seen Dischidia ovata at our Lowes, Home Depot or Wal-Mart garden centers. My car is in the shop right near Big Value Garden Center and after I return the loaner and pick up my car tomorrow afternoon I may just have to stop by and see what they have. ^_^

I got real excited today when I saw what I thought was blooms on this Saxifraga stolonifera (not a begonia but has the common name of "Strawberry Begonia") - the little blooms I saw were weedy oxalis growing in the soil. I put stuff out in the yard and in the trees during spring, summer and fall and get all kinds of weeds sprouting! I tried pulling it all out but I bet I didn't get it all. The weedy oxalis (Creeping Wood Sorrel) has popped up all over our yard.

DeLand/Deleon Spring, FL(Zone 8b)

Gee Linda, your Strawberry Begonia sure looks better than mine. It's just sitting there.
I had to get an ID on the Hoya, had no Idea which one it was.

(Zone 1)

Debra: Love the colors in that Coleus! I wonder if there's going to be a Coleus Co-op again this year? I ordered a few last year (or maybe year before last) but never got them in the ground and they all perished. :( Bad Plant Mom I Am!!

Ok, please tell me what plant that Queen Emma is ... Love it!

mjsponies: Gloxinia Bolivian Sunset sure is pretty. I bet hummingbirds would love it! Do you grow it in the ground? Plant Files says it's hardy in our zone: http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/53149/ but I just wonder if it would over winter here in central Fl ... especially winter's like the last two we've had.

I moved most everything outside and watered real well yesterday and today and the plants are enjoying the fresh air, sunshine and warm temperatures for a change. This is Dracaena 'Lemon Lime':

Love that begonia, it is very colorful.
Lin, I am going to show you something you sent me..
Can you see it there?

Thumbnail by joeswife
(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

Oh Gosh Lin, your Dracaena 'Lemon Lime', makes mine look like it is anemic!

DeLand/Deleon Spring, FL(Zone 8b)

Lin,
I got it Id'ed on a Hoya Website as Dischidia ovata - commonly called Watermelon Hoya.
I just got the Bolivan Sunset plant a little bit ago. So for now in a pot. Once I get enough of it to take starts from I am going to put some in the ground to see how it does.

Debra, I panicked when the Budda Belly dropped all it's leaves this winter. Then read that is normal. Big sigh of relief !

(Zone 1)

Debra: Is that the variegated Pandorea I sent you? Great growing! I should have sent you the entire plant! It was big and really root bound. The mama plant is dead ... at least I'm pretty sure it's a total goner. I thought my neighbor wanted it (she always tells me to stick stuff over the fence if I don't want it) which I did after I sent you the small one. The mama plant is still there by the fence (bare root because I wanted to keep the pot and trellis.) I'm sure the freezes we've had this winter killed the roots and all.

mjsponies: oh, okay ... Dischidia ovata it is. I was getting confused. I love the variegated foliage.

(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

I fell asleep after ncis.. I did manage to shovel the driveway without a heart attack, but I think it kicked my rear, anyway... my DH had a better chance at getting into the drive this evening after work in this blizzard thing. Back to tropicals shared, this is from JPlunket.. ( tropical swap)

This Philo is a split leaf, the person who sent it used to be on this forum, I think it was Michelle? Or maybe Rachel? Oh dear, will have to look thru my dmails.

Thumbnail by joeswife
(Zone 1)

Oh Debra, be careful shoveling that snow! I feel so bad for all of y'all who are having to deal with that horrible weather! I've been seeing on t.v. how blizzards are affecting many folks and the weather is going to get worse! It showed the Chicago area and about how Illinois had to activate the National Guard! I can't imagine having to deal with so much snow and ice!

Is that first plant a Colocasia of some sort? And that second pic looks like the juvenile form (before the leaves split) of Monstera deliciosa: http://cubits.org/tropicalplantphotodict/thread/view/5175/

(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

Lin I am pretty sure the EE is a Portora? and I have another one in the main room with an even bigger leaf from someone in this forum.
here is the tree I rescued from the dumpster, it was cut off and stripped bare. Look at the new groth. I can't tell what kind of tree it is yet, I have not seen a trunk like this before.

(Zone 1)

The Alocasia Portora: http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/53970/ is a real beauty! And while googling, I found this amazing Portora cross!: http://aroidiaresearch.org/portora.htm

I will be real curious to see what your mystery tree turns out to be! Isn't it exciting watching and waiting for it to leaf out fully?

(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

Very! I am so happy I rescued it..
Have to show MJ the thunbergia vine she sent me

Well, I'm going to say nite' for now ... it's 12:30 and I can't stop yawning. I will leave you with a photo of the bloom of that Pandora Vine:

DeLand/Deleon Spring, FL(Zone 8b)

Debra,
that's Thunbergia battiscombei http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/38378/

Lin , I like ! that variegated Pandora vine.

Blackshear, GA

Debra,
You are so like me. My daughter and I were riding through the neighborhood the other day and there on the side of the road (where they put yard trash) was two big dracenas, nothing wrong with them. The person had pulled them out of the pot and thrown them out there. I slammed on brakes, my daughter rolled her eyes, and I got out and rescued them. Love getting free things! LOL

Also this weekend, I went out of town and visited several nurseries, one had an EE like yours but it was about 8 ft. tall or higher. The truck of it was probably 12 in around. That thing was huge.

DeLand/Deleon Spring, FL(Zone 8b)

Walking around the yard this morning, I saw the Brugs left in the ground, Ecuador Pink and a noid peach are sprouting new growth, so is the Night blooming Jasmine, as well as some Salvia's.
Debra,
Here's you " Pink Brug suaveolens", I think it's time to repot it. On the left is Iochroma still blooming that's been living in the extra bedroom when the weather was cold, on the right a Kalanchoe that is a red noid. And behind that thru the screen is my Dead Grass..........LOL !

Thumbnail by mjsponies
Lee's Summit, MO(Zone 6a)

Martha, are you keeping your Iochroma in a pot for a reason? I'm in zone 8b and mine comes back from the roots and blooms every year. Just wondering!

DeLand/Deleon Spring, FL(Zone 8b)

I got two of them in early summer. I put one in the ground and one in a pot. They had just started blooming before we got the freezes. I wanted to enjoy the blooms for a little bit. Seems like the last 3 winters so many things have gotten toasted just as they were starting to bloom or when they were in really nice full bloom.

Sarasota, FL(Zone 9b)

Anybody do hydrangeas? I've had unexpected success with these "Shooting Star" hyd's that I picked up on sale at the grocery store after New Years.

Thought for sure they would expire in the heat of summer here, but no! The one I bought last year put up new growth and bloomed again in May. It's now in a 16" pot and four times the size it was when I got it. I did place the pot outside a patio door so maybe it got some cool relief from the a/c through the glass.

Just got this one in the picture a couple of weeks ago, and here it is with a new bloom!

Lee's Summit, MO(Zone 6a)

I wish our stores would get the shooting star Hydrangea - I've been lusting after one for about 3 years! It's beautiful!!!

Sarasota, FL(Zone 9b)

Kay, did you try P*b**x? (are we allowed to name stores?) That's where I've found mine. They had them over the holidays, and our store put them on for half price the second week of January.

Otherwise, I'd be willing to try sending you a cutting from my big plant. Don't know if it will work, but can't hurt to try.

It does have a "sprawling" habit, which might indicate a tendency to root stems where they touch the ground. See pic.

Thumbnail by dyzzypyxxy
Lee's Summit, MO(Zone 6a)

No, our Publix nor Winn Dixie had them. I appreciate your kind offer, but I will just wait for a plant. Thanks!

Jacksonville, FL(Zone 9a)

Our Publix usually has them around holidays. Valentine's is coming up perhaps you will see them at your stores then.

Lee's Summit, MO(Zone 6a)

I have a friend who is the floral manager at W.D. - I have asked her to call me if they get them in.
