Miami, FL(Zone 10a)

Lin,
Whewwww, some storm huh ? Still raining pretty hard here. We got some pretty good gusts of wind, and for a bit was getting very concerned about all the tornado watches.
I've just come back in from the barn, checking on the horses and greenhouse. Got soaked.
I know I've missed a bunch of posts too.
But Rita......I would sure love to trade the freckled canna for that Ermine...I googled it, it's gorgeous. May have to wait till it blooms tho...LOL....I went down and checked the markers. and they have faded. I "think" I know which one it is, and do have somewhere pics of the bed, so could count over....
You know you can order vent's to put in pre-existing greenhouses. I have windows, a big door and a fan, no way could I do with out that.

(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

It felt good looking at all the pictures. I was going to post my paper whites a blooming, and the thunbergia again, but the lap top broke. I am afraid to plug the camera in to this old antique down here. I really enjoy the pictures.
I picked up two frilly looking accolasia pollys, they look like my other ones, only they are more frilly on the edges. When I went to move my Queen palm, the whole top came off. Is this normal? Gee.. now I am losing leaves on stuff. The cold is seeping in and the temp down here is 62. ( in the basement garden) Hibs are still budding and blooming, morning glorys still blooming, wish I could post a picture. IT guys at work have my lap top.
While down here, I found a Picture of one of my hybrid roses, this is Audrey Hepburn. She drowned the year before last, I sure do miss her.

Thank you all for the welcome,

GAgirl1066,if your pavonia ever puts out seeds please keep me in mind for a few.

Hello to you Lin,I don't have tropicals left,I had them out on the patio, then made a unexpected trip to the hospital for almost a week.In those few days we had record low temps and everything was frozen solid including the gessies when I got home.Maybe I'll be lucky a a few will grow back? Glad your bad weather is over.

I do have a Saint Vincent Lilac vine(Solanum seaforthianum) that grew from seed blooming for the first time.

Debra: That is one beautiful rose ... Love it!

mj: Yes, it was real scary with all those tornado watches and warnings last night! We had winds up to 60 mph in one area over here but luckily we fared really well with no damage and not many branches down ... just a few from the Cabbage Palms which is normal anyway. From photo's I saw on the news I think Lake County was hit pretty hard, with roof's torn off homes, trees uprooted and power lines down. It's really odd to have storms and even rain at this time of year. We really needed the rain and I think we probably got 2" or so before the storms passed out to sea. It's windy today but beautiful. Looks like the NE is going to get hit with some bad weather later today from the same system.

I think our high the next few days is supposed to be upper 60's to right around 70 but it's going to drop to 39º at night. I guess I will need to move the orchids back inside.

This is one of my noid Rhipsalis' ... I can never remember which is which for some reason and I have a very difficult time trying to identify them by comparing photo's on-line.

Jan: That is one beautiful vine, I've never heard of it before and I love that bloom! I'm sorry to hear that you had another hospital trip ... hope you are doing better now? I know what you mean about unexpected cold snaps killing your plants, I've had that happen a few times too. The weather is changing so drastically anymore I wonder from year to year what won't survive. Last winter I lost plants that I'd had for 25-30 years and from the looks of things this year there are a few I don't think will recover.

Debra: I'm not sure what's going on with your Queen Palm but it doesn't sound good if the top fell off, maybe rot in the crown? We have a few Queen's planted in the yard and last year one didn't survive the winter, the top died out and it looked like it was growing new fronds from the top but my husband chain sawed the top off (thinking it would re-sprout!%&) and I told him I was sure the tree wouldn't survive that pruning job, LOL ... it didn't! We have 3 large Queen's in the front yard and one looks like it was hit pretty hard this winter, many cold damaged fronds and I sure hope it recovers. I think you should just take a wait and see approach with your palm ... 62º isn't really too cold for it in your basement so maybe it's just sulking and will sprout new growth in spring!

Pelargonium doesn't seem to mind the cooler temp's at all:

Jan,
If the pavonia sets seed, I will send you some. I am also going to try some cuttings today. Everything I have read says that it is easy from cuttings, but I know I tried once before and they did not make it.

What all did you lose in the frost, I would be glad to send you some things if I have them. Let me know....

Lee's Summit, MO(Zone 6a)

I won't know what I've lost, for sure, until March. Everything in the greenhouse seems to be ok so far.

I am lusting after a Stictocardia vine (plant) today - can't get it off my mind - I am OBSESSED with getting another plant!

Pensacola, FL(Zone 8b)

wow guys thanks for the pics I have enjoyed seeing them all I wish I was still in Florida,,,,,,,,lol

(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

Hi James, how ya doing? I wish I was still in Florida too. Hi there Jan , that is an awsome vine. I will have some things to share with you this spring, if you would remind me by dmail, no problem.
Kay, I think We have a rooted stem just for you of the stictocardia. It will be just a few more weeks and all your vines will be coming your way!
Gee, I wish I could show you all my paper whites. I can't believe I grew them to bloom inside!

Red Oak, TX

Hello!!

plantladylin, thanks for the pictures, especially the one of the manatees at the State Park. My DH has always wanted to visit and was wondering if it was legal to snorkel there.

mjsponies, I am happy to know that you guys in Florida are getting much needed rain. We get a lot of tornado warnings here in Texas. That is the only thing that I don't like about living here, not having a storm shelter.
Thanks for the tip on the vents, I will look into getting a few. It was 65 degrees today and I had to open the doors and windows on my GH.

joeswife, I am glad to see you, I was begining to miss your pictures. I hope that you get your computer fixed soon. You have a lot blooming in the basement right now. I bet the paper whites make the house smell good!!

KayJones, Joeswife came through for you with the Stictocardia vine. I will try to root a few again in the spring. Glad to hear that everything is looking good in your GH.

Hi James, I wish that I was in Florida as well.

Jannich, Thanks for introducing me to a new plant. That is my favorite color and a very good picture. I was always hesitant to plant seeds but being around Joeswife for the past couple of years, I have been doing quite well with them. I bought a couple of variegated leaf nasturtiums today.

This is a Flame Vine, I was very excited when I saw the buds this morning. It is about a year old, bought at Zone 9 in Houston.

candela, I saw a few signs of spring myself today, the Carolina Jasmine and the flowering Quince is showing color.

Rita, my sweet Debra is TRYING to root me a cutting - not an easy thing to do. I read somewhere that there is a technique not often used to root difficult plants, but it might work. It said to BEND a stem down, remove the outer bark layer, dust with rooting compound and cover with a gritty mix, topped with a rock. I'm going to try that with some plants and see what happens. Has anyone on this thread ever done this before?

DeLand/Deleon Spring, FL(Zone 8b)

Kay,
I've used that method your describing alot with pipevines as well as passionflowers. I scrape off a few leaves, then use my fingernail to scrape the nodes, rooting hormone, and I save the closure thingies from coffee bags, bend them in half and use them to anchor the cutting.

Prita - do you have an exhaust fan in your greenhouse ? That is very helpful too.

Ipomoea indica blooming today in the greenhouse....

That's good to hear, Martha! I have done tons of air-layering and soil -layering, but never quite this method.

(Zone 1)

Rita: Blue Springs State Park: http://www.floridastateparks.org/bluespring/default.cfm allows snorkeling and scuba diving but not during winter months when the Manatee's are present in the spring run. The West Indian Manatee is an endangered species so no contact is allowed, whether in the spring water or the river. Folks can and do canoe outside of the spring run in the St. Johns river and the Manatee's are always in the river during warm weather so you can view them from a canoe or boat. The river water is not conducive to snorkeling, because of the tannic acid the water is so dark you can't see anything. Many people snorkel and scuba dive in the spring run when manatees aren't present, there are lots of different fish that are even visible from the extensive boardwalk areas. We took our boat to the St. Johns river a few times years ago but I would never get in the water because there are lots of gators present in rivers and lakes here in Fla. My husband used to go water skiing and wake boarding all the time, but not me! I wouldn't even dangle my feet in that water, I don't want to be gator bait so my body stays in the boat!

Oooh, love that Flame Vine! I know there are a couple of plants with that name but yours looks like Pyrostegia venusta: http://www.floridata.com/ref/p/pyro_ven.cfm

Love your Koi Pond, very nice!

Kay: I've rooted Hoya's and other vines that way ... remove a few leaves at the nodes and lay the stem on the potting medium so that the node area is in contact with the soil, and weigh it down with a rock. I've also used bobby pins or bent paper clips to press the stem to the soil.

No blooms for me to show right now but I think Spring is on the way ... the Robins have arrived, and we only see them for a couple of weeks before they head back north!

mj: Beautiful Ipomoea, really pretty color! I need a greenhouse. ^_^

Keaau, HI

Everyone's photos are great! Mjsponies Morning Glory is quite vibrant.
That is a native plant here. I'll have to find a wild one for comparison.

Thanks for the bird shots Lin! Those Robins bring back memories from the 60's.

Dave, I like your weeds.
Kay, the cutting that is rooting is from a bend that i semi bent and nicked, it is already showing signs of swelling at the nodes. It is a big vine. As soon as I get my laptop back from the putor doctor, I will show you.

Up to almost 70 tomorrow and then snow again sat, sun and monday. I started about 70 seed cups and a grow cell planter tonight. I had fun.
Rita that flame vine is awsome.
MJ's, my i indica bit the dust or is dormant, I am hoping for the dormant part. I always bring it inside.
Lin, I love your robin, We have a couple that never left for the winter. I think they are well nested in the house eating ivy we have going on here.
I saw a Hawk go after either a mouse or a small bird at the feeder yesterday and was freaked out. I fear my lone albino mourning dove will get snatched. I put his food on the table in the dog run so he doesn't have to balance on the feeder. I also thought blue jays and cardinals were territorial, but for some reason this winter. we have three pairs of each every morning out back. DDh heard the hoot owl last weekend. I think the mice hang out under all the feeders now. Havn't caught one in quite a while in the traps here.
These are from three years ago, I still have them, they are waking up again, down here in the garden. It is worth it to me to bring them in every year.

Hi Debra, the Melastoma does set seed. Unfortunately it is one of the worst weeds in lowland rainforests in Hawai'i.

It was brought here because of it's beauty.

Jan,
I would love one of your lilac vines. Purple is also my favorite color. We have just bought 100 acres and we are building a house, so I have lots of land to add plants. Thanks.

Jan, I'd like one of those vines - mine died about 5 years ago - lovely vine! What are you wanting in trade?

Great pictures everyone. I enjoyed viewing them all.

candela, I am always excited when I see a bloom from one of my Anthuriums as well. Your Philodendron looks more like pedatum from the picture that you showed. Nice plant.

Rita, very nice Anthurium and I know you will enjoy seeing blooms from your new Peace Lily.

Lin, great shot of the Manatee's and Paula I am looking forward to seeing pictures of your cup of gold in bloom. I have seeds for that plant but I am yet to start them.

Good Morning Kay,
We seem to be the only ones up at this hour. You would think that I could sleep late on a Saturday, but no, too many years of getting up early. I hope to get some seeds planted today. Got a few going yesterday. Got to post that picture of my cup of gold also.

Lee's Summit, MO(Zone 6a)

Oh, me too - up at 5 a.m. for most of my 60 years! Please do post your cup of gold - mine died, so would love to see your success!
