Money Matters - Part 4

Their minimum wage is more than ours.

Eastern Long Island, NY(Zone 7a)

They need it, everything costs twice as much over there! lol!

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Many of the shortages are in engineering and tech. Those are well-paying jobs.

Eastern Long Island, NY(Zone 7a)

Maybe it has something to do with the "inflation-fighting measures that have kept wages low in comparison with the country’s neighbors". They may be looking for better pay elsewhere..

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

But the neighbors have much higher unemployment rates.

Eastern Long Island, NY(Zone 7a)

Makes sense, everyone wants more money..

I know this is getting old.

Today 16 weeks no delivery of propane (heating fuel) still at/around 60%

Jumping up in the air and doing 360 degrees :-)

but then again its been 6 weeks doing the bathroom from hell. I will post some pics, well when it gets done - 3 more weeks?

The bathroom struck again since the post above. Jim moved a light switch about 6 inches and hooked it back up yesterday. Now another light switch in the bathroom wont work that was never touched. It has no juice. Jim is befungled as he says there is no way to trace it unless you rip the ceiling and walls out.

Lets see what he does.

Eastern Long Island, NY(Zone 7a)

They say electricity flows through the path of least resistance, if the configuration of the circuit was changed, the resistance of the pathways may have been changed too. Good luck to Jim!

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Sure it's not a 3-way switch mis-connected as a regular one?

Not a 3 way switch. It has a red button and if it pops out the breaker in the the breaker box will shut off and will have to be reset. All he did was took it out and put it back in. That switch is above the counter and the one on the wall near the floor - you know the one that you would plug a vacuume cleaner in - that high. DONT WORK !! lol but this aint funny.

Jim says it has
2 black wires
2 red wires
and a ground

Those GFI's have to be wired carefully in the circuit (beginning, or end only)... AND they go bad. I've replaced several over the last 5 years.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Oh, an outlet, not a switch. That's a ground-fault outlet. I'm sure you know it had to be reset right there on the outlet.

I think the darn thing is no good. I can remember 5 years ago we had one on the kitchen wall and another outlet quit working. He replaced it with a normal outlet and then the other one worked.

So you all say - REPLACE IT?

Eastern Long Island, NY(Zone 7a)

Sometimes if it's a tight fit it can short out if the contacts touch the box. I usually wrap it once or twice with electrical tape just in case.

so that outlet will short out another outlet? I am not touching it. I reached up over the sink when I was 5 years old and grabbed hold of 2 bare wires. I got thrown across the room into the refridgerator like 15 feet away. I have a big fear of getting bit.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

I've had a few go bad.

Eastern Long Island, NY(Zone 7a)

I bought one brand new from HD not too long ago and it was DOA. Paid good money for it too!

So.App.Mtns., United States(Zone 5b)

I'd say replace it... BUT since they are sensitive as to how they are wired (placement in the circuit), it might just be that the black wires should be reversed...

Thanks - I am going to tell him to replace it.

So.App.Mtns., United States(Zone 5b)

Replacing it, if the incoming feed (one of the black or red wires) is on the wrong side, won't fix the problem.

Just the fact that there are BOTH red and black "hot" wires says there are TWO circuits on there, not just one.

I will tell him - Thanks!!!

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Red is normally a 'switched' hot. No white wire on the neutral??

2 solid blacks
2 solid reds
then a copper ground

Eastern Long Island, NY(Zone 7a)

Maybe he ran out of white wire.

call in a professional

YES, call in a professional.

As for two sets of wires, you can wire each outlet of the dual receptacle separately. Not common, but it can be done. I have seen people wife the top one to be switched and the lower always energized.

I found a small envelope yesterday that had some silver dollars in it. One dated 1881 and two 1884. There were some more, but these were the oldest. How do I find out about their value?

Amherst, NY(Zone 6a)

Jan23,

I have often found the value of both old coins and currency by typing the phrase "value of ...." in my Yahoo search. For your case, you would type in "value of 1881 silver dollar" and you should get several hits that will help you.

I have a coin book.....what figure is on it? Is it the lady?

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Probably not worth much. Only certain yeats are really valuable if in excellent condition.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

That woulD be a Morgan dollar, Jen.

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

here's a really good site

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

There's all different ones, Victor, the one with just the lady's head is the Morgan then there's the standing one and the sitting one

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

I think the Morgan was most common.

Circulated or uncirculated determines value. Next is the mint location. There is other factors depending on the coin - mistamped has a tone color etc.

Here is uncirculated M1881 Morgan 0 http://cgi.ebay.com/1881-O-MORGAN-SILVER-DOLLAR-US-COINS-1-CH-GEM-BU-/170600532348?pt=Coins_US_Individual&hash=item27b895897c

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Scarcity is the main factor. Same with books.

Salem Cnty, NJ(Zone 7b)

Wow, thank you all for the info. I'll check the links.
