Money Matters - Part 4

Got back into an oil ETF the past few weeks. Doing nicely!

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

Saw $2.83

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

i never left my energy fund should check how it is doing - since these are long term funds i do not stress or celebrate the ups and downs - now if realestate would come back...................

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

I have an energy find in my pension too, but they don't rise directly with oil price like an ETF does. I have the ETF in my individual stock portfolio. I did very well with the inverse one a couple of years ago. Kept buying it as oil skyrocketed, and cashed it in when the price plummeted.

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

good for you - i do not have the stomach for individual stocks - use to have them and did good like everyone else back before the earlier dive - still found myself checking them 2 and 3 times day. If i can average 8% a year until i retire that is good enough for me.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Nice work...

You have heard the saying:
Only Thing We Have to Fear Is Fear Itself - Roosevelt

It should read:

Only thing we have to fear is being unprepared.

Devaluation is a good one too.

Oh boy - cackling about gas price now?

Much better than here, Bill.

back to looking at dlsr's - my frequent flyer miles will expire this year - can get a canon 60D or 7D, even Nikon higher end models. would burn off almost all the miles. would rather travel somewhere as it is a better use of the miles - meaning the airlines tickets would be more expensive - wife is still taking classes so we see no window of vacation opportunity.

I'll take them!!!

Thanks Celeste.

(Ronnie), PA(Zone 6b)

Get the camera!!

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

yeah - which one:) there is a 50K mileage difference between the two - if i went with the 60D there would still be 100K miles that could be used if she weakens - want the 7D though

Eastern Long Island, NY(Zone 7a)

Take the trip! An experience you have forever, a camera you have until it breaks! lol!

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

can't get her out of the house - want go to nepal?

Eastern Long Island, NY(Zone 7a)

Yes! But DW won't trust me unless she goes too, she knows I like to take chances! lol!!

oh boy cant spell

wc - tell her not to worry - first time i went the head sherpa took me and another guy out for a hike at the end of the day to the highest peak near by - a cloud bank rolled in could not see a thing - the sherpa wanted to go back the way we came and try to find the trail - i thought that was dicey since there was an intersection and if we took the wrong turn we would be lost for a while - i knew if we headed straight down the slope off trail we would hit it the trail, go right and straight back to camp - we had been walking for some time at that point and it would be an hour or more before we made it back to camp if we found the intersection - he and the other guy headed that way while i went down the slope - got back a good 45 minutes before them:) the other guy was not happy, he told me he knew i was right but did not want to go against our "leader" - next time he said he would follow me. you'd be in good hands.

Eastern Long Island, NY(Zone 7a)

I would have followed the goat by the road! lol!

- Last time I went to Roatan we had just settled into the diving resort and we wanted to know where the coffee and cakes were served. It was dark and late at night, there was no one around and no path since it was all sand and jungle. I saw a cat staring at us and it started to walk away into the jungle sort of 'beckoning' I told DW the cat would lead us... We followed the cat though the darkness and finally reached the big house -up some stairs and straight to the coffee & cakes where the other divers were eating. He lied down next to our table for the rest of the evening while I slipped him a cookie every now and then! lol!!

(Ronnie), PA(Zone 6b)

I'm not a big traveler so I say get the 7D, save up some more miles, take a smaller trip and lots of pictures with the new camera! LOL

Eastern Long Island, NY(Zone 7a)

You could get the 7D, but then expect to shell out another $1,500- $2,000 for some good basic lenses to go with it, like a telephoto and a macro.

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

i realize the camera is just the beginning - it would come with one standard lens - and a macro and telephoto would be next. same lens would be required regardless of which model.

(Ronnie), PA(Zone 6b)

You can get some good deals on used lenses on Craigslist and eBay too.

Eastern Long Island, NY(Zone 7a)

Yes, once you get into DSLRs you get into a 'system' regardless of which model or company you go with.

Eastern Long Island, NY(Zone 7a)

- not sure if the manufacturer's warranty transfers on second hand purchases, since the lens would not have been bought from an authorized dealer. If you take the lens to the dealer to get repaired I believe you have to send the warranty card along with the receipt.
I do know that they cover recall issues regardless, but will charge full price for repairs if that is their policy. (Sigma has that policy here on LI.)

If you're an early tax filer and itemize your deductions, you will have to wait a bit. The last minute extension of the tax rates has made the IRS fall behind in their programming.

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

oil burner was off tonight had to have emergency service - tank was almost empty and the fill up caused air to get into the system - will be interested to see what/if we get charged for the visit - had just had a tune up.

oh and paid 3.149 a gallon times 215 gallons - i'll let you folks figure out the math - wow

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

Hubby went to our neighbor's house to check out their oil burner tonight.

Eastern Long Island, NY(Zone 7a)

= $677.035 Wow!

Edit: (it might be more because they may charge state tax, fed tax, delivery surcharge tax, hose tax, truck employee tax, paper bill tax, et cetera tax, etc etc...)

Oil prices def flucuate more than natural gas.

Hubby saw a gas station that had gas for $3.20

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Nat gas is actually low so far this year.

In Oct. got propane 2.92 a gallon. Last night I saw on the news inflation was just starting. They said with - Wheat, Milk, Meat, Sugar and cooking Oils.
