Coffee Break # 48 - Holiday 2010 edition

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

Thanks, WC and Karen. Now our Megan is in college but during her high school years she got interested in making documentaries and won top place! The judge was Jeffrey Lyon of the NY Times. We often wonder what her final choice of a career will be.

Sears/Kenmore used to be good - "once upon a time".

Karen - what a heartwarming story about David. I wish him every possible success.

I think Sears is on its way out. Once they hooked up with K-Mart, that was a pretty good signal to me that they are heading for the trash pile. It is bringing it on itself. No sympathy from me, though it is sad to see the older, previously reliable American companies fading away.

Long ago people would say not to waste money buying RCA Whirlpool since Kenmore sold the exact same machines. For many years I had a Sears appliance guy for our TV's and he said the difference was the manufacturer used quality parts for RCA but not for Kenmore.

I don't have Kenmore or RCA so I'm not playing favorites - just repeating what the guy said.

Thank you for the compliment Karen.

Pirl, great job by your daughter! When I did part of my kitchen over in Aug., I bought the fridge & stove from Lowe's....great service, no problems, but they don't install....my son had to do that. I bought the dishwasher from Sears because they had the Kitchenaid I wanted....they did install, & the young man was very polite. However, I thought the salesperson at Sears was pushy, & not very nice......kept pressuring me into options when I clearly said NO.....will not shop there again!

Thanks Karen and Louise! Bill, you're too sweet. I'm sure I can do something for you. : )

Marilyn - regarding the pushy Sears salesman: I went in to buy a $45.00 sewing machine (including the cabinet) back in 1965 and the salesman was so pushy, insisting it couldn't handle heavy materials like denim, that I wrote to Sears and complained. They told me to come in and buy it at the same $45. whenever it was convenient for me. Still have the machine, still works fine and it's been through denim, canvass and a fingernail without a problem. Not a single service call in all these years!

Funny, Jo Ann!

I do have this picture of a mouse and, if you can't read the words, it says:
A mouse is miracle enough to stagger sextillions of infidels.

Steve Martin's Atheist song is funny!
Nice cat drawings GE! I envy people that can draw!

Its a mixed blessing Ronnie

Funny song, Jo Ann! Arlene, I loved my old Kenmore sewing machine. I bought a new Kenmore about six years ago, and it's still going strong, but it's nothing like my old one. I take it in for oil and a general maintenance every 2 years (not to Sears- no way!) Singers aren't made like they were anymore either.

Great watercolors, Jo Ann!!

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

I was given a small portable Singer when I graduated from HS. I used it for baby clothes to slipcovers.
They just dont make them like that anymore.

WC - yet another beautiful shot!

Lovely cat watercolors, JoAnn! How wonderful to be able to do that for such a good cause!

I'm only six months ahead of myself but I felt like painting today so thats whay I do. When June gets here who knows if I will be able to paint with gardening.
I'm glad I can fulfill my promise.

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

They're lovely Jo Ann and couldn't go to a better cause.

In June you'll be outside with your camera before the sun is up, as usual!!!

Was today in 1492 that Chris Columbus landed in Santo Domingo - looking for baseball players. ^_^

LOL, Victor!!!

No doubt an advance scout for the Yankees.

Just heard that this silly herd mentality movement on Facebook to change your profile pic to a cartoon to promote an end to violence to children (like that would actually do something) might have actually been started by pedophiles. The theory is that kids are more likely to 'friend' a person with a cartoon character. Whehter true or not, I am always amazed how easily people are swayed to follow everyone else.

Questa, NM(Zone 5b)

I heard that too, Victor. I don't care one way or another. I just love seeing the old cartoons! I did it to my own profile and don't feel like I'm any less an individual soul than before. I happened to think it's fun. Do you think I follow the herd blindly?

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Have no idea, Harp. Only you can know that. I have seen so many of these things since the internet has started - 'click on this link and Microsoft will pay you', etc., that I was making a general observation. Same goes for silly inaccurate emails that get forwarded.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

This doesn't seem to be the case for me. Keep having that same dang irritating college dream!

I used to read the important material for an exam just before going to bed. It usually worked, then you have to worry if what you studied was on the exam.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

I keep having this dream where I miss classes or whatever, and cannot graduate on time. Had it again last night!

Gardening books:

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

love the paintings JoAnn

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

I feel changing your profile pic is about the same as wearing a pink ribbon in support of breast cancer survivors or the puzzle ribbon to support autism research...in the great scheme of things who is it hurting?
I am really amazed, though, at people that friend someone they don't even know....that makes no sense to me

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Different because the origin of the pink ribbon is well-established. Here, people immediately jump on bandwagons with no knowledge whatsoever about what they;re being asked to do. Big difference!

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

too funny

Halifax, MA(Zone 6a)

Beautiful reflections shot, WC!

I beg to differ with Steve Martin. Atheists have plenty of songs. All the ones that don't talk about God. Lord knows there are tons of them.

Beautiful kitty paintings, Jo, and for a great cause, too. I so support any animal rescue groups.

I did that on my profile, too, Victor. Didn't know about that rumor. Might not even be true. But you're right, it does nothing to further the cause. Doing those things doesn't support anything. Just promotes awareness, is all. That's a good thing, too.

Love that picture from the tree book, Victor. I'd love to visit that place someday.

LOL!!!!! Too funny, Jen!!!!!
