I think your date night is awesome! Hopefully Keith & I can start doing something like that. We still don't know anyone here and don't trust anyone with our kids.

(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

dhtzu, I love that ball in the middle of that display that is really pretty.

(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

I agree, Joyce, it is pretty...I love those kind of things. I showed Joe your leaf mold effort, he thought it was cool. No offers from him to make me one tho..

Kansas City (Joyce), MO(Zone 5a)

Glad I don't have a bad back cause if I had to wait on DH I would have a really long wait.....rofl.
I did play in the concrete but didn't do the leaf, I decided to do the bird bath that was in one of the gardening magazine and I think they had the direction here on DG also. It is the one where you put a pumpkin in the center of the concrete to make the bird bath hole....hope it works and I didn't push the pumpking too far down. 60 lbs of concrete sure is heavy but I got it done out on the walk. It is so windy I can't keep the plastic taped like they said. I decided to stick some leaves on the top of the plain concrete for some decorations, hope it isn't too much. Think the book said I could remove the pumpkin (gourd) tomorrow. If it comes out 1/2 way decent I may try another since we are suppose to have good weather for awhile. I am worried about the depth of the pumpkin tho, looking at the picture it maybe to shallow but most birds don't like deep or butterflies....listen to me trying to convience myself....rofl. Figured I had better do the pumpkin before it rotted. Maybe leaf tomorrow or both. LOL

If you like what the guy did with the stepping stone wait til you see the fountains.....

Another amazing fountain

Birdbath, look close and you can see all the different leaves he used to make this, he also made big flat stones using different leaves like this.

Thumbnail by happgarden
(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

oh wow... you did good on that birdbath from what i can see... hmmm..I love the fountain idea..

Blue Ridge Mtns, VA(Zone 7a)

Those fountains are over the top. The birdies are going to love you this Winter, happ. Mental note: Buy Quikrete at Lowe's now instead of potting soil. Well the big bags do weight about the the same thing....lol

I just filled our feeders with 14 lbs of no-waste seeds on the 1st, my traditional day to do that, and boy the birds have been having a feast. Is it me, or has the cost of birdseed gone out the roof?

Looking good, Faye. The Agastache is a perennial you can leave outside in the pot. If you want to keep the Million Bells going, it'll be happy in your sun room but you probably knew that anyway. I was thinking about you this morning. Did you hear me squeal? One of the Christmas Cacti you gave me has started to bloom. Need to check for sure but think it's "pink, large blooms".

Group (((((HUG)))) to keep warm.

Kansas City (Joyce), MO(Zone 5a)

Debra, that lobata is beautiful. I am seeing new growth on some of the wonderful plants you sent me.

I love playing with concrete or anything like that for some reason.
I can unveil it as soon as the sun comes up and see if it worked or not. I forgot to put the concrete color in it but maybe being the first it was better to wait until I figure out if it worked or not...I got to anxious to get the concrete dumped and started.. It was hard to leave it alone yesterday...rofl. Some friends came over yesterday and they were worse than me...LOL they are coming back today.

There is a Holiday Gift Exchange thread: http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/1138177/
Plse come on and sign up if interested.
Pass the word...
Beutiful bird bath!

Kansas City (Joyce), MO(Zone 5a)

Ok, it is sooo cold outside and the wind is blowing 40 miles an hour atleast.
I unveiled the bird bath, and it is ok, wish I would of put leaves all around it, but the big problem is I can't get the pumpkin out!!
I don't want to damage it cause I wanted to make another, I have been pulling and pulling and had to come back in cause I got so cold. Any suggestions? Some how in the article they didn't tell you want to do, maybe I squished it in too far....

Frozen Fruit...LOL

(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

good morning! well that sounds like fun! Today, I get to clear away all the frozen stuff outside, then Joe is going to bbq some lamb burgers and pork chops , yum! I got the oven cleaned yesterday, also got out all the boxes of green tomatoes and found about a peck ready to turn into salsa. got some trade packages made up, things re-potted, the kitchen and dining area swept, dishes done, laundry done, seed packets made up, and then our date was dinner and an art show and two man band playing in Eldorado, Kansas. There were art pieces there for sale, one was called "Twister" a tornado shaped piece made with parts of cars and it was way cool, but only 28,999.

Told Joe we didn't have the space for it. Ha! It was a great piece really, but for that kind of money, I could buy a new basement/small house?

(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

ut ohhs.. well, hmm, is it frozen? Try spraying some pan spray around the edges of it?

Warner Robins, GA(Zone 8b)

Can you bring it in and let the pumpkin warm up until it gets soft?

(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

ewww, maggie LOL then she will have to make some pie ;)

(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

that mite work , tho, Joyce, Maggie's idea.
I made up some tip cuttings as I was form shaping my trees ( Brugs).. I have Milk N Honey, Isabella, and Frosty cuttings going now.
Will save you all some lobata seeds, if they didn't freeze last night.
Here is Flamenco, Joe says she can't stay here all winter, Have to move her on Thanksgiving.
I will be trimming her right before that so she will fit better. She is almost to the ceiling now.

happ, wonder if a spray of Kroil Oil or WD40, then covered with wax paper would have helped prior to placing the punkin? I dunno since that's a project I've never tried. Love how the leaf impressions turned out.

Warner Robins, GA(Zone 8b)

It would work around here because one of my kids I'm sure would find it FUN. Can you pour some warm water over it? Or use a hair dryer? I'm crazy, I know. :)

(susie) Hastings, MI(Zone 5a)

Warner Robins, GA(Zone 8b)

Wow I walked into a creepy crawly mess today. Went in the bathroom and good thing I didn't sit down. Tiny ants all over the toilet! WHY??? There's nothing in there to attract them. They were in and on the water in the bowl.....flushed those....MORE came with the new water......and more.....and more every time I flushed it! Hundreds every time! Lifted the tank lid.....TONS of those little suckers! They were on the wall behind the toilet and on the floor around it! The only thing I had at the moment was 409. It killed 'em for the most part, but the Hubbs just went to buy some spray at Lowes. We walked around the rest of the house looking, but thankfully found none. The only place we haven't checked yet is the attic. That's HIS job. My luck I'd miss a stud and crash thru the ceiling. Ughhhh Another crazy day at the Hanson house!

Warner Robins, GA(Zone 8b)

Did any of you see the thread "What inspired your name?". Pretty interesting to hear how some came up with their screen names. Wish I had put some thought into mine.

Kansas City (Joyce), MO(Zone 5a)

Ok finally got that pumpkin out! Took a paring knife (so bad!) and carefully slide it between the pumpkin and concrete, then tugged and tugged and tugged! Yep, next time pam is getting sprayed on that pumpkin! Directions say I can't move it for another 24 hours, ugh! I want to stain it...rofl. It is ok for the first try hopefully the second I have learned something....like put the stain in the concrete and I think put leaves all over the top maybe from plants I got from lots of you and it will be my friendship birdbath......

Edited to say I agree with Maggie if I had any idea when I signed up for DG I would of tried for a better name, but honestly when I signed up I had no idea what it was. I found it because I kept looking up info on the web and DG plantfile kept popping up, so I decided to join not thinking at all aout a name....

Off to the lumber yard, gonna have to drive 25 miles because ours in town is only open 1/2 day on Saturday....wonder why they don't get much busines....hummmmm

FLOYD, VA(Zone 6a)

You guys are just too busy for me right now. I can't keep up. I have some concrete projects on the back burner too, but carrying that concrete mix is getting harder to do.

Frozen Fruit Salad I agree with you about the price of birdseed. It has been going through the roof. I only buy the black oil sunflower seeds here and they have doubled in the last 5 years. I couldn't begin to use that waste free mix. My birds go through a 50 pound bag a month. Of course they get some helpf from the squirrels and the raccoons.

Maggie that is too weird about those ants. We have times like that here, during certain times of the year when they get in. Best thing to do is to get some spray that you can use around the foundation of your house outside. That stuff really works. I hate ants. We have ant hills all over our yard. Nothing worse than planting something and digging down into one of them. We used to have an exterminator that came monthly and I wanted him to do something about the ant hills. The methods for taking care of that at that time were not very pet friendly or enviromentally friendly, so I have just been living with it.

Working on a few Christmas projects. I figured with the way I work these days I better get started.

(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

I saw on tv a show about a guy that is an exterminator and he had a house with that aunt nest problem. Ants move when weather or danger to their queens nest is impedending. Get to the nest and kill the queen. Ugh. I would have freaked out. I hate ants. They came in through a crack outside behind the cedar planks on the other side of the kitchen sink. Sprayed and sprayed inside as they came pouring out thru a crack in the stove hood vent. Finally went outside and found the tunnells, and got some outside foundation spray. No ants since. ( I will prolly find them in another part of the house downstairs soon)

(Linda Kay) Amarill, TX(Zone 7a)

Love the birdbath! So pretty! Yeah, I think you should have sprayed it or maybe put a sheet of plastic between the pumkin and concrete!

Kansas City (Joyce), MO(Zone 5a)

Ants are truely a pain, especially those fire ants, right you texans...LOL

Thanks Linda Kay, I just tried another and forgot the dye again and forgot to spray the pumpkin! Talk about a slow learner.

rvnsbrk, what kind of concrete projects do you have? I just love messing with that stuff.

FLOYD, VA(Zone 6a)

Happ I am mostly trying to do stepping stones. I have a couple of decorative molds for that and then there is always the mosaic thing to do on them. I just can't seem to get that stuff these days. Too much time spent making cards which seems to be a huge time hog apparently.

Blue Ridge Mtns, VA(Zone 7a)

Your handmade cards are so beautiful, Neener. Hands down they're the best I've ever seen and to me they're works of art. I packed your punkin card during the big move today and am already missing it sitting on my desk. So much stuff I packed but didn't have to after all since we basically scooted my desk from one end of the den to the other. At first DH thought we'd have to remove the "L" on the return and put it in storage. No way was I going to lose half my desk, especially since it was a Christmas present from him last year, not to mention I'd already measured. It fits perfectly and still can't believe the floor space we gained, even after bringing in the wood stove and low-light plants. One of my projects tomorrow is going to be unpacking the two big boxes of office stuff I didn't have to pack to begin with and organizing drawers.....again.

Maggie, I don't know their scientific name but an old timey neighbor of ours calls them "sweet ants". They'll find their way inside in the tiniest crack and thrive at any water source. Itty bitty little ants. I get hordes of them in early Summer in my kitchen. You're in a warmer climate and wouldn't be surprised if they're the same kind of ant . DH used both granules and a spray around the perimeter of our foundation and sprayed in every crack around the sinks and bathrooms. It worked and they were gone in a few days. I'll ask him the name of the insecticides he used.

(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

I agree with happ, the cards you make are totally awsome. you have talent. course, all of ya do. You should see the halloween quilt this lady sent my college girl, it is so detailed and perfect, I have no clue how someone can be that dedicated to sewing like that. All my time is spent between work, the basement garden, the plants in the windows, sorting seeds, a little housecleaning, and cooking on sundays for a whole week. someday I am going to clean out the drawer at this desk I sit at... I just know I will find some money and some jewerly I am missing. prolly some seeds, gum, candy, addresses, notecards, and some tags I made up and prolly lost the plants they went on. *sigh*DH made a pumkin Pie while I was taking college girl back to Emporia. It tasted real good. He does a wonderful job following recipes he picks out of the paper. Oh, did I mention I spend most of my time messing with plants?
Betty Marshall is prolly all open now, havn't been down to check on her tonight.

Thumbnail by joeswife
Warner Robins, GA(Zone 8b)

Thanks Fruit. The 409 caused a slow death for most of them and Keith went crazy with the 3 or 4 products that he found at lowes. Inside and outside. I did kill one that was about triple the size of the rest...the queen??? I don't know. I just thought it was crazy that they were in the toilet tank. Never heard of anything like that before. This is the 2nd ant episode I've had down here. The first one was when they COVERED the outside of my car and a few hundred managed to get inside. Wasp spray was the only thing I had on hand that day. Jeeeeez. These little ants are devastating to this OCD clean freak. I'm going to stock up BIG with sprays around here.

(Linda Kay) Amarill, TX(Zone 7a)

I agree on the ants, they are terrible here! We have tree cutter ants that can strip a tree over night, we have the fire ants that hurt like hell when the bite, and we have those sugar ants too!
Morning everyone!

Kansas City (Joyce), MO(Zone 5a)

Morning....
Deejay, congrats on your win, way to go. Nothing like some mad money in the pocket!

Neener your cards are beautiful and I am sure they take a lot of time and so much thought put into each one.

FOTV, glad everything ended up good for you and the desk. That is one busy day trying to get everything to fit where you want. This winter I am going to get organized...rofl....well gonna work on it.

Debra, I spend so much time with the flowers but it sure brings me peace. Which anymore I can't seem to get enough of...rofl.

House is a mess with what few cabinets I had gone waiting on the new. Gonna take boxes home tonight and pack up all but 2 of the dishes...rofl. DH and I went to an antique mall yesterday and found hanging scales like the old ones from the old grocery store and I am going to hang it over the side of the bar. I have a shelf that goes around all the walls and I have old advertising stuff, gum ball machines, and stuff around there. I am guessing I need to take that stuff down before everyone starts putting up the new cabinets...which won't be too bad I usually remove it and put Christmas stuff up there. That way I know at least once a year it gets cleaned...rofl...

Blue Ridge Mtns, VA(Zone 7a)

Here's the two products he used in combination, Maggie. I'm sure he got these at Lowe's since that's the only big box store close by.
AMDRO Ant Block -- Home Perimeter Ant Bait (granules)
Spectracide Triazicide Insect Killer -- Once & Done (liquid concentrate)
Good luck curing the problem. They worked for us.

Gotta get to chores. It feels great having space but we made such a mess stacking and tossing more crap in he garage. The Black Hole
