Apropos of Nothing v.20

(Linda)Gig Harbor, WA(Zone 8a)

Congratulations Steve! Your head must be spinning with all these things going on around you!
Lynn we always have the time for any pastorial services that are needed!

>> I would LOVE to see the pics of that hot tub conversion!

Is that some kind of gardening cult where new members are immersed in a hot tub?
A total immersion conversion?

So what's the new baby's name, yet? Somehow Roldolfo doesn't seem like a doting mama's first choice.

Union, WA(Zone 8b)

Yes, congratulations. We do need to know his name. We could call him Rolly!

Richmond B.C., Canada

LOL, Corey!

(thank you, thank you!)

His name is Caedmon Eziekel Capatach. As a vet I can't say he is cute like the puppies and kittens I have seen the last 3 weeks .

Southern NJ, United States(Zone 7a)

My newest granddaughter was pretty homely, I thought, when she was first born, although of course everyone else thought she was gorgeous, especially her doting parents, which is as it should be. But once her eyes were no longer puffy and her features firmed up she turned into a beautiful little girl; my son looked like a boxer who'd lost his last few fights when he was a newborn, and he turned into an amazingly pretty little boy. Caedmon will become much more handsome in the upcoming days and months!

Gastonia, NC(Zone 7b)

Zeke! cool name. I spect he'll cute'n up as he ages a bit.

Salem Cnty, NJ(Zone 7b)

Great name!!!

We found out on Friday that the newest GK will be a girl. We'll be heading toTX in June. They have chosen Cora as her name. My son is ecstatic! He was hoping for a girl.

Southern NJ, United States(Zone 7a)

Cora is such a cool name! Congratulations on the newest GK! We have one that's now 7 months old named Jilliane. Babies are such fun!

Union, WA(Zone 8b)

We just learned we will have our fifteenth great-grandchild in June. Don't know who it will be yet. And our granddaughter who is expecting is Coralee.

I like both of those names. I agree, babies are such fun. Maybe I could move in with them for t he summer.
Congrats, WW.

I'll be interested to see where DG's new alliance with Horticulture magazine will go. I've often found the mag to be very hoity-toity, although it certainly may have changed in the past several years I've not looked at it.

Union, WA(Zone 8b)

It hasn't changed. It still has pretty pictures.

Southern NJ, United States(Zone 7a)

What alliance with Horticulture Magazine? Have I missed something?

Carnation, WA(Zone 7b)

Congratulations to all that have added new family member and those that will be adding as the new year comes through.

Great name for your GS Sofer, has the sound of a scholar.

Prayers to you and your family Sofer. May your GD be blessed with strength during her journey.

Congratulations to Lynn on her union.

Condolences to Julie on her puppy's passing.

Greenhouse_Gal, I think I read it in a newsletter or a report on the homepage.

Cedarhome, WA(Zone 8b)

It was in the DG weekly email newsletter.

Tornado hit Aumsville around noon today. Scary stuff! The rain that proceeded it was unbeliveable here in Silverton. Lots of damage, but so far no reports of serious injury. Thank God! Hope spring comes early this year!

(Judi)Portland, OR

I hope all of you are surviving the tornados and flooding. It was a bit sunny this morning for about 15 minutes, then the sky turned black and it poured. I feel so badly for those whose homes were damaged today. It is good news that no one was injured.

Caedmon Eziekel - wow - what a great name! It's very manly. My kids have very basic names - John, Marsha, Sam, Mary, Ben, Paul & Joe. My grandkids names are pretty simple as well. Pretty simple, we are!

I braved the wet weather today to do some Christmas shopping. I bought myself some new silk long johns (they're called Long Janes) for under ski pants. I think the ones I already have a 10 years old! I'm treating myself to a ski day on Mt Hood on Thursday. My favorite thing to do is to ski by myself. I'm beginning to think I'm antisocial.

So Lynn, is the honeymoon over yet? Are you a blushing bride? Has marriage changed you? I have to admit that the "m' word scares me to death.

Portland, I just went skiing for the first time in 2 years (equipment and health challenged). So wonderful to find I can still make my way down the hill in a reasonable fashion. I've skiied since grade school (yes - cable bindings, leather boots, and handknit wool socks) so am totally old school. I opted to just rent equipment for the time being, and that is certainly an eye opener. I had no luck convincing the 'dude' at the ski counter that I really did want longer skiis. Pretty tough trying to adjust from 162 to 150. Can you trip when you ski??

I know what you mean bonehead! My old skis are 170s and my new ones are 151s. I feel like I'm carrying kids' gear. I was an instructor in my college days and some of used to test demo and rate skis for several companies, and they assured me that if I thought the 151s were too short I could return them for 158s. I also started skiing very young - I was actually 4 years old. My parents were both skiers and my Dad finally quit when he was 86. Judging from the way I feel after a day on the mountain, I'll be lucky to make it till 65! Where did you go skiing?

Does anyone else in this group ski? That would be a fun winter round-up!

Lake Stevens, WA

I ski. Have since 9th grade. I'm a late starter compared to you two. Love the short skies. They almost turn themselves. My hubby and both boys ski too. However, the snowmobile has taken over my HD so the boys and I go.
My skies are 156 and bought them a few years ago. The skies are so different from years ago. I think much much better. Grab the short ones and you will never go back.

The boys and I went to Mt. hood on Spring vacation. Must of been 2008. We had a great time.

Baker is my mountain of choice and my granddaughter and son have seasons pass there. My other son has a pass for Stevens, so I'll likely go up there as well. My sister lives about 15 minutes from Loup Loup which is a fun hill. As a child, I mostly skiied the Summit - it was closest to Seattle - and we tended to go to Hyak which I think was least expensive (4 kids). I remember my younger sister skiing with rubber boots and tiny skis with curled tips and roller skate bindings. She hated them.

I miss my Head 360s which were basic black skis with no weird shaping to them. Got them as a high school graduation gift in '71 and used them until they totally delaminated a few years ago. Have been renting since and am not fond of the new skis, but love the comfort of the new boots.

My older son switched to snowboarding awhile back, but will be teaching skiing this season and needed some poles. He nabbed mine from the barn - turquoise and lime green stripes with bailing twine on one grip (also circa '70s). He thinks they are very cool.

Here's another shot of Baker, which is absolutely gorgeous on a sunny day.

When we lived on Lummi we took lots of photos of Mt. Baker. It sure is a gorgeous mountain!

Union, WA(Zone 8b)

I used to ski back in the iceage. LOL Early 60's at Hyak. My H at the time was on the Ski Patrol and we went every weekend on Friday and stayed until Sunday night. Fun! Taught my DD and she still skies.

Cedarhome, WA(Zone 8b)

I don't even know what Hyak is these days - I don't think it is a ski area anymore, or maybe it was absorbed by Ski Acres? We also went to Stevens frequently, back when Daisy was just a chain of rope tows, and there was a half-way station on Barrier. One thing that saddens me is all the lifts at Baker have lost their names and are just referred to by number. At least they still have cats in the lodges.

(Judi)Portland, OR

I taught at Mammoth and Heavenly Valley in the early 60s. A bunch of us from school would drive up on Thursday night, teach Fri, Sat & Sun, and drive back to school on Sunday night. When I think of the partying we did I have no idea how we are still alive today.
My kids grew up on skis and snow boards and they have raced on teams and all that nonsense. They all started on those little tiny skis with Mickey Mouse on the tips, and a bright green ski suit with a big pocket on the back that held diapers. Those were the days! However, it's much more pleasant now to ski without dragging little ones around the mountain. They would get caught between the bumps and I always had to fish them out. One time we took them to Aspen and gave them a lesson with a friend who taught there. I wanted him to only reenforce safety and rules, and when we were on a lift we heard a racket coming from the trees and there they were, whooping and hollerin', following my friend in and out of the trees. Now I get to ski with grandkids! I would be happy living in a little log cabin in the snow, and some day I just might. If I can get Thai food delivered to the forest.

Union, WA(Zone 8b)

Judi you are one amazing lady. Wow to your life.

(Judi)Portland, OR

Well, I wish I still got perks like free skis - we were moving advertisements for ski companies. Mine was Volkl, and I still think they are the best skis in the world. Now, no perks! After all, who is going to choose skis they saw on an old grey-haired woman with a titanium hip who is aching all over by the time she reaches the bottom. I just want to have a bit of fun, and not need any more metal bones!

Kalispell, MT(Zone 4b)

I can't wait to get home and pound the slopes. But I have to go to Hawaii for 10 days. Bummer.

Union, WA(Zone 8b)

I glad you get to go to Hawaii. Can't think of anyone who would enjoy it more.

(Judi)Portland, OR

Well I am in love.......with my new skis. Spent the day at Mt Hood and had a great time. You know that all-over-achy-exhausted feeling at the end of a day of skiing? These cute skis require much less effort.

Sofer, soak up some warm sun and get some rest in Hawaii. You've had a lot going on lately!

Cedarhome, WA(Zone 8b)

Here's my granddaugher and, Judi, you will likely recall this attitude from all your snow-kids - rough and tough and afraid of nothing...but not totally opposed to a hot cocoa break with Grammy now and again.

My DH had his cancer surgeries on the 2d and 3d. The one on his eye was good surgery but he was extremly ill for a week, then on the 13th he just snapped out of it and is back to his normal. Weird!

Cedarhome, WA(Zone 8b)

I'd like to snap back to my normal weird too! Glad things went well for him.

(Judi)Portland, OR

Cute photo of your GD bonehead. It's so nice when kids and grandkids like hanging out with us!

Willow, glad your DH is ok. It sounds like he went through quite a lot!

I have a stomach ache tonight because I made gingerbread with lemon sauce and ate too much. It's a gluten-free recipe and it's the best gingerbread ever.
