Tropical Garden # 84

Debra, Tropic is right, it's a Philodendron.

Tropic, that is a nice list of Native Orchids in your area. I had to look some of them up and yes, Goodyera's are considered a Jewel Orchid but folks here have always called them a "rattlesnake" plant.

GAgirl, it's pretty common here so if you want a couple just let me know.

mjs, LOL on Bears! We have black bear here and I have viewed them on several occasions while hiking. A few years ago we had one come within ten feet from our campsite. I thought I would be afraid if this ever happened but instead I went into my "get the heck out of my space mood"! Everyone thought I was out of my mind;-) Ignorant hunters feed the bear here (it's illegal though) in order to make an easier kill.

I like those native ones.. They don't scare me near as much as the ones in the stores..

Blooming tonight in the Basement Garden..

Hi Everyone!
That is too cool to find native orchids growing in your own "back yard''.
Thanks for showing them to us!

RachelLF, I hate to take advantage of your generosity, but I will accept your offer for a few of those Lady slipper orchids, I wonder if they will be able to take the Texas heat. I have a nice start of that Costus Lateriflorus posted earlier in the thread if you are interested in trading.
That was very kind of Mr. Lucas to share his Antherium. Your last photo seems to be a Phlo. Verrucosum.

This is a nice size Philo Cordatum from Brian Williams.

Joeswife, It always makes me feel good to read your comments, you are always full of enthusiasm for your gardening projects, I am tuckered out from bringing in all those plants.
Those were very nice plants from your friend, I am jealous of the variegated bower vine, and am looking forward to seeing the flowers from your Stictocardia vine. I had to give mine a drastic trim, it was taking over the hh.

mjsponies, How lucky to have those Ground Orchids growing in your pasture. I will have to do a little research to see if there are any wild orchids growing in Texas.

Rachel,
I would love to try a couple. Do you think they may actually grow here? Would you like a cutting of my jewel orchid? They have just rooted.

(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

Happy Halloween and great pictures everyone. Love them. I recieved some nice plants in a tropical plant trade the other day.. whoo hoo! Went to sons after the nail biting football game , dug up the two caudex plants mgs and the two chichi plants, and his blooming purple double datura to bring home for the winter.

Prita,
I was pretty excited when we found those. Took me a while to ID, and was even more happy when they came up again for me this last spring and it's sent up 1 baby.
Cool Bat Flower Metro ! EFG Orchids up the road has them, I may just have to get one.

Good Evening Everyone!

Joeswife, is the basement garden almost full? I will wait until spring to send my promise plants to you. If your dbl. purple Datura does not make it this winter, I have quite a few seeds to share. My yellow double datura did not do much this summer. My neighbour started his from seeds and they did a lot better than the plant that I overwintered.

These are still blooming!!

Metrosideros, That is a very nice plant. I have a bat plant but I have no hope of ever getting a bloom. Thanks for showing yours!

mjsponies, If by chance you get enough of the Ground Orchids to sell or trade, I would like to get on that list, those are worth waiting for!!
I hope by now you have gotten a little rain and the vines are blooming like crazy! My Dutchman's pipe is growing everywhere but no blooms. I hope that your plant is at least showing buds!

RachelLF, I have a Philo. for you!

Thumbnail by prita

Rita, I wish I knew if the Lady Slipper could handle Tx. weather or not but I don't. Hopefully when I get them in the Spring I can tell exactly which one it is and goodness you are very welcome to them. Thanks, I will take you up on that Costus and that is a very nice Philo. C. from Brian W. He had a nice Philo. on Ebay a while back that I let get away from me and I hope he puts another one up soon. Could your noid plant above be a Pellionia?

GAgirl, USDA shows this Goodyera present all the way to the tip end of Florida so I doubt you will have any problems growing them there. I went this evening and dug you up a couple and I can mail them to you tomorrow but I need your mailing address. I would like to try growing the Jewel Orchid that you have but only if you have enough to share one.

Debra, I see some very nice plants from your plant trade. You lucked out!

Dave, cool Tacca.

Rita, I was typing while you posted and Oh my, that is one beautiful Philodendron but goodness just send me or root me a cutting from your plant. That plant is way too nice to give the whole thing away to me and I do believe your Philo. Atabapoense and the other Passiflora I have for you are both rooted and I will mail them to you soon. Thank you for your kindness.

I think I have a bud on the firespike.. Basement is not full yet, but the garage is.. by the time those get deugged and redone, the basement will be nice a lush, but right now there is still walking space.. Having all the brugs in one room really helps, and Joe put up a nice log double shop light in the other room and son gave me his 48 inch table to put under it. Enablers, all of them. LOL Love that bat flower... didn't really think they were real or orchids.
Still not ready to try an orchid yet, I am still learning how to grow common tropicals, like bananas and such.
I know its blurry, but is this a bud? Rita this is from one of your "sticks" you sent me.

Rachel, thank you so much, I will be looking for it. I am in the address exchange. So do you think I should plant them outside? I will do a little research on them.

DeLand/Deleon Spring, FL(Zone 8b)

Rita,
I need to do some more research on the Spiranthes lanceolata Ground Orchid to see how they propagate. One "Baby" has come up beside it in the year that I've had it moved to it's new location, so maybe by underground runners? Now that it's established maybe it will make more babies faster.
I'm always up for trades...( like I neeeddddd more plants, LOL)
They are saying we may get some rain toward the end of the week. I certainly hope so. I dragged out the 125 ft. hose to the end of "front" of the front yard and watered the Rose of Sharons. They look terrible, and have dropped most of their leaves. One of the purple firespikes is out there as well and it looks pretty sad also. The other Cassia is hanging in there, but hasn't bloomed at all this year.
On the other hand. The BIG Pipevine is 30 feet up in the trees with long dangling blooms ! LOL...
Here's the White Sky vine....giving up just a few blooms. If it does like the Blue I should have tons of blooms next year it will be it's second year.

Hi Everyone!

RachelLF, thanks!! your Costus will be in the mail on Monday, I promise you will love it. I took a cutting of the Philo today. Hopefully, it will be ready by next spring.
As always, you were spot on with the Pellionia repens. Now that I know what it is, I will use it as a ground cover.

GAGirl1066, I transplanted a Clerodendron Inicum today, I will have it in the mail as soon as it perks up enough to handle the trip.

Joeswife, I am very pleased to know that your firespike will bloom this year.
The plants in the hh usually will bloom before the ones out in the garden, but this year they are blooming at the same time.(go figure)
I am proud for you that your family is helping with your gardening chores. I would pass out if anyone in my family would even offer to help. They refer to my plants as brush.
I wish I was as organized as you are, having a room just for Brugs, that is a very good idea! It will probably help to keep them bug free for the winter.

mjsponies, I love your white Sky Vine, they are not as common as the blue. Your's is the only one shown, as far as I can recall, thanks.
I thought of you today with all the rain we got, wish that I was able to trade for a few of your nice warm days. lol Fingers crossed that your weatherman is corrct with his foreast and you get enough rain this weekend.

Rita, can I just come to your house and take a tour of your gardens and take some 'pinches' here and there? LOL Just when I think I have most everything, you post something else and I think I have to have it. Love the pictures.

wow! hoop houses and green houses! Love it! I thought we were going to get freeze, but it missed us. I hope it hangs in until weekend, I still have some babies out front to dig up.. I am hopeless.. I love my lantanas... I have a nice yellow one and about 6 trailing lavender ones out front still in the flower beds.

For Mj, she finally bloomed! I love her, now she can have her own big pot.. I will giver her one this weekend,, maybe.. she seems happy in the little pot she came in, sitting in a basket of potting mix for succulents..

DeLand/Deleon Spring, FL(Zone 8b)

Rita,
I can send you some cuttings of the White Sky if you want. It's hardy here. I wanted something to brighten up that area of the fence line and now she's running up one of the light poles for the riding arena. I know I'll have to prune it when she get's up to the light tho. I've also put some on the little horse barn, with hay twine run across the front in either direction so she can travel across the front overhang. I mixed it with the blue so hope they will bloom at the same time with both colors.
We got a little rain yesterday afternoon, enough to knock the dust down ! Yeah ! And supposed to get more towards the end of the week. Then supposed to cool off, enough that I'll have to temporarily move some things to the greenhouse.
Debra, Lady "Margarite" will take off when you give her bigger shoes !
Can't remember if I posted a pic of mine or not if so you'll just have to look at it again. lol
Rachel do you know when your coming to St. Augustine yet ?

this is about 1/4 of the whole plant, growing in the ground.

Beautiful MJ. I don't have much luck with Passies. The butterflies eat them before they can grow. Hopefully when we move I can put them in the ground and they will do much better. Do the deer eat them?

Took the camera for a quick stroll around the garden today. Took lots of photos of things that seemed interesting. Turned out to be too many so I drastically/ruthlessly reduced that number and ended up with just over 60. Hmmmm! So in I went again and pruned extra savagely. Here's what survived the pruning.

I had a few Caladiums around the place but then decided last year to scatter some different ones around to add to the mix. This is one of them.

My Typhonodorum lindleyanum only grows slow now, but is still growing. It's produced two pods bursting with seed. I've got people who want them (the seed) so I'm not worried about them maturing. I got into the photo to give a size perspective, the plant is over 3 metres high.

tropic that is unbelievable! I did not know those got that big... Your pictures are wonderful. Thank you!
oh, and those two caladiums are my favorites!

When the huge Raintree crashed down in my garden I had to find a new place for all the Dendrobium affine that called it home. Finally placed them on this large Indian Almond. Some of the orchids are still flowering, but it'll probably take them the whole wet season to settle in.

Thumbnail by tropicbreeze

Debra, I'm still waiting to see how big it can really get.

All the Heliconia rostrata have been flowering for a while.
