Tropical Garden # 84

DeLand/Deleon Spring, FL(Zone 8b)

Rita, Welcome back !
I like that Mussaenda tree too ! All very pretty there, I'd love to get away for awhile !

Rachel,
Show ran longer than anticipated with some late entries. Nice change for the show management as many show entries have been extra "light' this year.
It's not a vine you sent me, the one I rooted for you. I had to re-do it, first one didn't take. So got a new one down. We've had some cool nights so I'm doing some cuttings inside under lights. Plenty warm enough during the day tho..but they need consistent temps.

Debra,
I'm in the same boat, my "dining room" table and coffee table have seeds everywhere, getting them dried and packed.
I have got to get these under control !! LOL....

Our county is now in a "Severe Drought" warning. We have had no rain in a month and what we did have a month ago was very little.
Temps have been great, but it soooo dry. I'm afraid I'm may loose some things that are not easily watered, mostly planted where they are because they rarely NEED to be watered. Even my "bog" garden, where I have plants that like a lot of moisture, and is naturally a wet area is dry as a bone. Very unusual for us.

Blackshear, GA

MJ, we are the same here. All the ponds around our area are getting very low. I really hope it doesn't get dry like it did several years ago.

Rita, If I were you, I would try to get to be better friends with that neightbor. LOL The yard is beautiful!!

North of Atlanta, GA(Zone 8a)

Rita, thanks for sharing pictures of your tropical paradise. I am envious! Someday....

Red Oak, TX

RachelLH, the hurricane that was scaring us, did minimal damage to the island. Let me know if you ever decide to make another trip, there are some very beautiful places to explore.
This was the only Phio. that I saw but I mainly stayed on the back roads and the poor areas.

joeswife, thanks, those are the last two plants to come in for me as well. I find that they can handle a few cold nights. I like the shape of your Brug. They are much easier to handle trimmed in that form.
I figure that everyone is tired of my garden, so I will show a few more from my neighbors yard.

mjsponies, thanks, I do hope that you get rain real soon!!
Can you believe that I did not pinch a single piece of that mussaenda, even though I was standing right next to it. There is not a nursery to buy plants from on the island, everything is from cuttings. Almost all the yards have hedges of bouginvillea crotons and hibiscus plants started from cuttings.
I did not pinch this either, lovely Costus growing everywhere.

GAGirl1066, that will be at the top of my to-do list. From what I gathered, she is a fun person as well as a very good gardener.
We would like to see the other Orchids that you could not post on Sat.
I have a few Crinums for you, do you want me to mail them now or wait until the spring?
This Orchid tree is from the same garden as the Costus

prita,
Oh my gosh, is that Caladium from your garden in Tx, or from Belize ? It's gorgeous !!!!!!

I'm whipped, but I hope I can post some pics in the morning. Brug Milk N Honey finally blessed me with a bloom. It was Breezy so had a hard time getting a pic that wasn't bluury. I'll try early in the am and hope I don't miss it.

Debra, fertilizing w/ tomato Fertilizer per your suggestion, now if the other two would co=operate.

Thanks Rita and it's good to know that Hurricane Richard did not cause much damage to the island and we never get tired of viewing pictures from your home in Tx. but I sure am enjoying these from Belize. Those Heliconia and Costus are gorgeous and of course I liked the philo;-) Please keep them coming if you have more to share.

mjs, I am in no hurry what so ever for that vine and yep, show entries and spectators for several disciplines have been way down here for the past couple of years.

It's still Orchid season!

Rita, Thats great, you can send them on if you don't mind. I have the hib. you wanted and maybe a couple of other things (?). Have to go back and look. LOL Beautiful pictures.

(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

I can't believe that orchid tree.. LOL I have a small twig going from a seed..

The costas are wonderful, wish all ine would do that some day.. ( look like that)
The best picture I am going to show DH is of the philo climbing the tree.. I keep telling him our "BigBoy" as he has named it, needs a tree.. it puts out two new leaves every other week.. and then two leaves die.. poor thing.
Dave, those orchids are mouth watring. DH still thinks I cold grow some, why he even hung a real nice shop light in a new growing area.. hmmmm.. now when he brings home a table for that area, we might think about an orchid or two..

Rita, all my brugs are in tree form, except the new ones I keep getting. I like the tree form the best. That way I can look up and see them.
I still have a lavender moon vine and an alba and chinese bean in this barrell.. but this is the base of it in this shot.

Mj and Ga girl, your cuttings of omaha gold, black and blue, anthony parker and splash salvias will be heading your way this coming monday.. If I can find the HOT LIPS I will send some of those too.. they are lost in this flower bed somewhere.. I found two more firespike stick plants that Rita sent me, they are now out of the ground and safe from freezing.

Sounds like your almost there getting your plants in ! Milk N Honey Brug bloom opened last night hopefully I can get a pic early this morning.

Blackshear, GA

Thank you Debra!! I would like "Hot Lips". I don't want to be greedy, but I had that one a couple of years ago and loved it....but lost it. I haven't been able to find it since. Thank you for being so generous.

I will be glad to send you some things in the spring (now if you want). Maybe even an orchid or two.

Keaau, HI

Hey Debra!

Wouldn't some of the terrestrial orchids do well in indoors? They are weeds here, and can handle a wide range of conditions.

Here are a few:

This is Phaius tankarvilleae, Chinese Ground Orchid / Nun's Orchid.

Thumbnail by Metrosideros
Blackshear, GA

WOW Metro, You are up early!! Or have you just not gone to bed?LOL
Love the nun's orchid, I have several and they do great inside, althought I do keep mine outside during the warmer months and GH/or home in winter. They can not freeze because for me they usually bloom around February or March. The spikes start growing about November or December. Takes for ever for them to grow up, but well worth the wait. I would love for them to be 'weeds' here. That is one I would be happy with.

Spathoglottis plicata, Philippine Ground Orchid.

Hey GAgirl,

Aren't there wild Orchids in your area, such as Epipactis and Liparis. Can they be cultivated?

This is the Bamboo Orchid, Arundina graminifolia.

(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

The chances of finding any of those beautiful plants in a Nursery around here are slim to none, but I sure enjoy looking at the ones you all show.
GaGirl, your name is on the hotlips. I have cuttings in the pot of the original plant, If they don't take, I will split the root ball for you. Mine blooms all winter down in the basement, but doesn't do much outside here.
Dany, I will save some seeds from the Splash Salvia for you and send with some of my JMG seeds to you.
I am afraid to do anything with these.. They seemed so happy all summer in this container, that is busting at the seam.Advice? I have someone that would want one of these. I can't remember the name or species, someone told me on here some time ago. It came as a clump of small tips with roots summer before last.

Epidendrum x obrienianum, Butterfly Orchid.

Metro,
Never heard of those, so I had to look them up. The USDA plant site says they do not grow here, never seen them before. I have the bamboo orchid also, as a matter of fact I think I ordered it from Hawaii. I love it, mine is just beginning to bloom now.
LOVE the above orchid!! Are all those you're showing in the wild or do you have some personally? I really, really want to go to Hawaii some day, just to see the flowers.

(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

ME TOO! Don't go without me, PLEASE, LOL
Off to work, have a great day!

Chalis vine from Rita made it in with only one piece broken, and I am rooting it.. here is hoping..

Those last four Orchids grow wild in Hawai'i. I did bring the Epidendrum here. The others were here when I got here.

I do cultivate several tropical orchids. Here's a Dendrobium.

Thumbnail by Metrosideros
Jacksonville, FL(Zone 9a)

Debra, many orchids do grow here in our area. Most are the terrestrial types because of our spotty cold weather. I have the Bletilla which spreads rapidly, epidendrums like the green fly, E. conopseum, are not unusual. If you have woodlands on your new property, Lady Slippers will do well. We had the E. radicans growing outdoors for many years until a construction project did it in. Some crested coral root popped up after some neighbors had a load of fresh mulch spread once. I have been on the lookout for the Habenaria repens, Water Spider Orchid for my pond. Porcher's book, A guide to the wildflowers of SC, (close enough to Waycross) lists about 17 orchids although some of them are native to the mountainous areas. None of them are as showy as those in Hawaii but we have a good start. I just planted some Spathoglottis 'grapette', not said to be hardy here but I have chosen a sheltered spot and we shall see.

Debra, what is splash salvia? Did I missed a picture? I have some of those Black & Blue Salvia and they did really well. I collected seeds in case someone wanted to grow them from seeds. I saw them at Lowe's late this summer on clearance for something less than $1. Love Lowe's clearance section.

BTW, Rita, I would never be tired of looking at your garden, but enjoyed seeing your neighbor. Love seeing the orchids on the tree. When I went to Vietnam a few years back, I was amazed at all the orchids that grew grafted to the trees there. Sigh....

Red Oak, TX

Hello Everyone!

Metrosideros, that is interesting! My dh would like to know what side of Hawaii is the windward side.
I will have to start collecting orchids, I have not one to show. My nun's orchid came back, but did not bloom this year.

mjsponies, that caladium was at the airport in Belize. Congrats on your Milk and Honey bloom, looking for a picture soon.

This is the last of the Bue sky vine. I will give it a 'D' for performance this year

LiliMerci, thanks, my wedding bouquet was made from those wild orchids.

RacheLF, thanks, I appreciate your kindness! I am very excited with all the passion plants that you sent me, they are very vigorous growers. I hope to show lots of blooms next year.

This one took a while before blooming.

Joeswife, Gosh you guys were up early this morning! The lavender moonvine seeds that you sent me did not sprout, but I will try again next year. Did your's bloom?
That is a very good picture of your splash salvia. I love it! The Chalise vine is easy to root, I do hope that you get at least one bloom from it this Fall.
We will be getting a few cold nights this week, the 40's. I have the tender plants in. The plumerias, hibiscus, brugs and ginger plants will be next, they can take a little cold weather.

GAGirl1066, I mailed your package today. Hopefully it will gt there by Sat.

This is a Clerodendron Indicum from RJ.

Thumbnail by prita
Blackshear, GA

Rita, thank you so much, I will be looking for it. Would you try to root me a piece of the above Clerodendrum? I have most all the other ones, but not that one. I am trying to root the nodding clerodendrum now, so I could trade you if interested. Thank you. I will send your hib Monday.

(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

OH GOSH, Dave Are you kidding me? Those are HUGE! LOL If I give them a bigger pot, they will be like monsters, and prolly like the Macho fern, take up too much room.
Keep talking orchids, I am getting there.. well, not yet... still scared.
Rita I agree with Nicole, I never grow tired of your pictures of your Gardens, they change everyday with the seasons, and it is beautiful. I have more lav moon vine seeds, and yes they bloomed, and the albas did too, don't give up. Start some in February/to get nice vines by May. I think they could be a prenniel in your zone.. see if you can keep one going. trim it back. You might get a surprize. I had to cut down the night blooming jessemine. now I have a zillion cuttings, if anyone wants some, holler up.
Nicole, splash salvia is the variegated leaved one, yellow and green. Black and Blue is a perennial here for me, growing tubers under ground. Omaha gold did not come back from the ground this spring, but the cuttings took. It has a dark green and light green leaf. It gets way bigger than the B&B.
The cuttings I started of Snowqueen hibiscus have rooted. I am very pleased with myself.
If I can keep them going I will be boasting loudly, as I have had problems with this one.
I made a new bug spray. It didn't make anything wilt down in the basement . It did kill the mealy bugs. Liquid dish soap mixed with olive oil and water. BAM! LOL The Neem oil just solidifys too much to use in a mister. I love experimenting..
Man, I need to get out and clean those basement windows? Uhmm...
I have some "ground orchid" seeds and some lady slippers seeds.. didn't know those were real orchids.. Planing on planting them out in the "woodland" Garden . ..
