Jnette, that is ok, when ever you send it. Let me know about postage?
I like the yogurt cups with the bubble lids, I also like the 1 gallon pots with water crystals in them, for when it is not too hot, but I usually use the water bottles, cut to flip back like a Pez dispenser. I don't care if I use Styrofoam cups, that are recycled. People say don't use it, but if it is already there, reuse it.
I must go watch Storm Chasers it is my favorite show and I wait all year for it to begin, which is tonight.
Plant propagation part XXII based on my own experience
Looks like desert to me. Where is the waterfalls and giant Sequias? Bears? lol
Jen, I use ferti-lome Liquid Iron and it contains Chelated Iron, Copper, Manganese and Zink and it can be used on outdoor plants also. It can be sprayed and put into the ground. I do not remember how I got this but I think it was from Logee's. Busy now. talk later. JB
The Sequias are at the bottom you can just see the tops of them...lol did someone say lions tigers and bears???? oh my ...
beautiful pic....
not much to report just wanted to say hi
Dave
Beautiful picture Evelyn.
LOL, I think the rocks are bigger than the Sequoias if that is possible Dawn. If all of this other stuff is so big you can't see the bears on the ground.
Gorgeous. I have never been there Evelyn. Good choice 'cause it won't be long until you won't be able to get into Yosemite. I understand it gets snow fairly early. At least that is what I have heard.
Maybe you have to take pictures on the ground to get the bears Dawn. LOL
Hi peeps!
The rain has started here ... presently just light rain. I have been spending considerable time preparing ground to receive grass seed. A series of pictures of my progress follows ...1st is what I accomplished end of daylight yesterday.
Awesome picture Evelyn ... looks like what would make a great postcard.
Shoot ... I need to stop and take Christmas Cactus out of closet!
Done
mary you were busy... is that a bear in the background???? lol
I have been in a holding pattern and what do I get 2 more boxes of plants... yea....
rooted cuttings
Gold mop cypress - Chamaecyparis pisifera
dwarf burning bush - Euonymus alata nana
Emerald Green Euonymus
Moon Shadow Euonymus
un rooted cuttings
emerald pink and emerald blue creeping phlox -
I for get who needed phlox but i have my cuttings and should have them ready in the spring. I think i shocked the seller on the other end when I bought 50 of the phlox and now I want more. they look great. Pics tomorrow or monday... it just depends on how it goes this weekend. lots to do. I have my niece all day saturday to help me get organized and ready for winter. I have so much I need to pot up into 3.5" and then the huge qts of Chamaecyparis I got in a little while back. I think they will go into 3 gallons as they are huge and I would hate to loose one from not enough water.
I also started getting my little room ready to grow in. I managed to get one shelf moved in and the propagation cart I though I would not use this winter but i have talked myself into it. the garage is a lot tighter so it will be warmer this winter and there are a couple of begonia's I am dieing to try out.
JB have you seen the new Gryphon begonia??? I am going to shoot for march 7th for delivery. I think I can get them grown up in time for sales. I am even tossing the idea of doing a weekend sale in the driveway just to see how well it would go over. I should have my phlox in bloom and the other things I am getting should be doing quite well. along with all the stuff i have growing now. it would be nice to make a little money on all this stuff. i will try to dig up a pic of gryphon for you to see. here is a pic of the gold thread Chamaecyparis thats going into 3 gallons. the pots sitting on the decompressed granit I am useing to firm up the gumbo
have a great afternoon
and yes its that time of day... yep you guessed it nap 30
Dave
Here is a quick view of the snow on the mountains as we were driving out of there....and, yes Dawn, there are trees in many places, though I did not see any bears. In the park they had tame deer, but I did not take any pictures of them as we have plenty around our property, thankfully, not tame. The snow level starts at 9000' there, so the time when we had rain last, the snow fell here....
Dave, I want creeping phlox ..... the blank portion of my landscape pallet is considerable. I am also interested in Summer Beauty hydrangea. It would be nice for me to throw business your way. I am sure you will provide me with nice plants at a reasonable price.
I am planning to do layer rooting of my older daugter's azaleas when I visit her in North Carolina for Thanksgiving.
Then, I will visit again for Easter and pack and ship them to my house.
Do you have any other suggestions for my back area which is very blank?
And the rake in question is called a GARDEN RAKE.
MARY
Evelyn ....such pretty pictures .....but the last one makes me feel cold ....brrrrrrrrrrrrrrr
MARY
Jeanette ~ When you have time, please tell me how you keep your brugs over the winter. Do you plant them out in the spring, or do you set them out in pots? In full sun? I managed to kill all of mine outright last year. I planted them in the ground and they not only did not grow but did not survive. I must know more about them before I get any more. Usually I learn all about a plant before I attempt to grow it, but somehow I messed up on this one.
Mary ~ You have been working quite a bit on your gardening space. I hope that you are not establishing more than you wish to care for as I have. That has been my worst fault as when I clean up one area it is time to move onto the next until it is winter, than start all over again. Amending the soil is one thing, but keeping the weeds out and controlling the varmits is totally another thing. After this last thunderstorm we had, all sorts of weeds popped up everywhere.....mulched or not! Everything requires constant vigilance. That is why I am enjoying this vacation. As much as I love to garden, it requires a lot of consistant effort to make the property beautiful.
Dave ~ I hope that you are being careful lifting that DG. (I take it that you are having perfect weather about now, right?)
Jeanette & Mary ~ I hope that you are having some nice warm fall weather.
Dawn, JB & Sharon ~ I hope that you are having some nice cool fall weather.
Sharon ~ How is Vern doing? Has he pulled out all of his wiring yet?
Linda ~ What has your weather been??
Well, it's time for me to go now. Even on my vacation, you are all in my thoughts. Have fun (but don't overdo it...) in your gardens everyone! I know I am leaving someone out, but don't mean to. Just chime in, OK.
CHEERS!
~ Evelyn
Evelyn, your pictures are beautiful. Gorgeous sky and water. Love the trees growing right out of the rocks. Such a nice trip. Last fall my sister and bil had a time share in a condo in Yosemite but it was early and the roads were so bad with snow and mud that they turned around and went back.
Merry is that straw you have covered your planting with? Did you put it over the grass seed?
Sharon, we haven't heard a thing from you about Vern. Boy, do I hope he is ok.
Dave, I see those pipes there, are you sure you don't have a leak that is causing your problem of moisture?
I don't get on much now since my laptop is giving me problems. I wrote to Cisco today and asked them about my installing a new router and they said they would hep me. My grandson installed my last one but it was a used one and have had a lot of problems with it.
gotta run and watch Jon Stuart and then to bed.
Hello to all Halloween outdoor is done, plants are now in for the winter. I don't expect to save them all but will try. As usual we have a pretty gory display, and added a couple of new animations this year, but DH has wired each to a little button, so we can set them off one at a time. Hannibal (full size) Lector, and the caged wolfman (life size) are the newest big ones. Hannibal has quite a few sayings, and the wolf really REALLY wants out of the cage bad. Have had several of the neighbor kids over already, just to see what's new. I usually take the little ones through during the daylight so they can see that nothing will "get" them, then come THE night, they aren't quite so scared. Love this holiday.
This weekend is digging, cutting back, and maybe seed gathering, if there are any left. I just haven't had time yet, with not feeling good and Halloween, and , well you know. It is so sad, we didn't have any summer to speak of this year. My Veggies did nothing. and the flowers were pretty skimpy too. Only big surprise was the hardy hibiscus that popped up unexpectedly, Weren't very tall, but the flowers made up for it. Wish I could count on them every year, I love them. only the white with red centers have ever come back for the second time.
As you all know, I do lurk, Just don't always have much to say, at least this year. Sounds like most of you are doing OK. Dave, knock it off, overdoing it will only lead to misery for a lot longer. I know whereas I speak. Experience talks you know. Mr. Sciata is here to stay this time. Since I smoke, they don't recommend anything, so its learn to live with him. DH has exactly the same problem, so I guess you could say we share :) all things.
Talk to all later, Lee
good mornin everyone.
Evelyn you take such great pics of the outside world. what camera do you use?
yes we are having great weather cool crisp am and 70's -90's in the afternoon. very few 90's though.
I tried to do sprinkler heads to get rid of the hoses but they failed to work correctly. I use on of the risers to hold the stake of the ratchet head sprinkler up high., so no unfortunately its not the pipes. I do have another bed with most of the plants in it that i can water with the risers. I am thinking next year I will have everyone set correctly so I don' have to spot water. I run 2 ratchets over the main part of the nursery and then the risers on the others.
I have been good Lee. I need more DG and soil to plant but am waiting untill i have help tonight or tomorrow am. I get help from HD guys loading and I just pull the bags out and let them fall where they will, then I get someone to move them around back for me.
I will answer for mary...yes she has put straw/hay down over the grass seed to help it germinate. it also helps keep the birds out of the seeds. the one draw back is a few weed seeds will germinate with the grass but thats easy enough to fix
Mary I will email you on the phlox and hydrangea.
well its been tough to get moving today so I think its going to be a take it easy day as tomorrow will be bust butt most of the morning and early afternoon. ok some of the morning ... but hey I can have my fantasies cant I?
well have a great afternoon... I may drop back in
Dave
I have had an opportunity to talk to Melody and during our conversation I told her I had heard DG had been sold again. She said the Parent Company Internet Brands was sold and they expect no changes in DG day to day operations.
In the event you heard otherwise, I wanted to pass this on to you.
Sun is our and wind is nasty. Gusting big time. Thank God the tree men came and removed the old branches that could have fallen on the house.
I am glad they did too. a tree on the house is not funny .... even though the insurance company is trying to make it seem that way.
Dave ~ I just have a simple "point & shoot" Canon Sure Shot. It has to be easy for me, as I am no photographer. I think it was over $200.00 about 5 years ago. I am sure that the newer "Power Shots" have more pixels and are priced lower, but this one works fine, so I will use it until it doesn't work any more. (SO much better than having to take film in to be developed, come back for it and then scan the pictures in order to upload them onto the hard drive....)
JB ~ Wow! Internet Brands was sold. I wonder who owns it now? I suppose we can find out. Thanks for the info. I wonder if they fired everyone and started in with their own people?? Well, I suppose we will find out in due time. I am flad your "tree men" came to your place in time.... Hang in there....
Dave ~ I would like to buy some of your creeping phlox as well. Mary wanted some, but I only have a very small amount and I really need more.
It sounds like you have your watering system under control. I still hand water everything, but after this spring, there may be some changes.
Tonight we are having dinner with friends as we are settled into the Manhattan Beach Marriot now. It's a good thing we got group rates as we would never had these luxury accomations on our own. Have fun all....
Oh, Sharon, how is Vern doing?? I can't go without finding out.
Vern is fine. His wires are still in tact because he is still breathing.
Our weather is absolutely beautiful. Low 90s and no wind. I have three large boxes of plants in the garage that I received yesterday. So I am going to be very busy planting and moving plants.
Vern is in Heaven. Football and baseball all in one weekend.
Changed landscapers this week so this week was very busy for me. Also had tree service over to give us a bid for tree trimming. Window washers will be here Thursday so that should put us ready for the winter. Now all I have to do is train the new landscapers. That should only take a year.
I will take photos tomorrow when I have everything planted. It is so funny because we are opposite from the majority of you. You are bolting down for the winter and we are having our most beautiful weather of the year.
Jnette, how is your weather. The weather map looks like you are having cold weather. So now that you are done gardening for the year, what do you do with your time? I so envy you watching Jon Stuart. I love him and Vern cannot stand him so I lose. But that is one of the few I lose. I just let him chose the TV because I spend the majority of the time on my laptop.
Evelyn, hopefully by now you have run in to some old classmates. How many was in your graduating class. Wait until you find out that some of your classmates are not there because they have Alzheimer. My class was only 35 (I was informed, I thought it was 29) and we have 2 already with it and 4 died from accidents and one from cancer..
Evelyn, I know what you mean about hotels. The many years I was employed by JP Morgan Chase, I went on many award trips or business trips and always stayed in 4 or 5 star hotels. They are probably staying in Motel 6 now.
I was delighted to see the old CEO of Countrywide Mortgage paid $67.5 million fine today on civil fraud. Sometime when we are all together and over a large warm cup of tea, I will tell you many stories about this person. None good.
JB, it really does not matter who owns DG. I stayed in the same chair and desk for 29 years and they just kept changing the name on the front door, my business cards and forms. Nothing else changed except who was going to be my boss. And I really did not have a boss. They just let me do my own thing because we were very profitable and had no problems. But it was not all me. I had the greatest staff in the mortgage business and the majority of them had been with me over 20 years when I retired.
Lee, you are a "Halloween Geek". We have one in our neighborhood. Are the children going to trick or treat on Saturday or Sunday? I would prefer Saturday, I guess I had better get out and buy my candy.
Merry, if I had all that bare ground, it would be full of flowers or vegetables, not grass. But that is why it is your home and not mine. I could no way have a landscape that did not take at least 8 hours a day to take care of but that is because I am absolutely crazy.
Dave, glad to see you are taking care of your body. I still have to come up with an idea on how to keep my tropical plants alive during our cold spell. Sometimes we get down in the 30s. LOL. The worst part of our winter is the wind.
Well with Vern being from Texas and the Texas baseball team being ahead of the Yankees is making him very happy.
Later you crazy gardeners. Love you.
I had a Country Wide Mortgage and love the news. I am not dumb enough to live in a house that is above what I can comfortably pay. We did not even refy to take out equity when everyone did that. They were crooks though.
I wanted to say that buy because of my prior history with the CEO, I could probably be sued. But thanks for saying it.
Dawn, how is your weather? We might get rain on Sunday.
Good evening, just a quick note and then I will go back and read your posts. This laptop doesn't last long. Getting a new router Monday so hopefully will get it fixed.
Giggle. I am happy to say that. I do like these rich CEO's getting their just desserts, along with the doctors who kill celebrities (I hope they do), and the companies like CVS too.
Sharon
Do you want a sweet dog by chance? I have this foster that we are getting so attached to, but I want to foster for a while. He is a mutt, but we aren't sure what he is except there is probably Shar Pei and has Pointer in him, he is smart as a whip, house broken, well behaved for a young dog of 8 or 9 months, very small and mostly if not fully grown. He loves people, he loves to be by you, near you, he is so funny, he rolls on his back and just falls asleep. I swear I need to find this dog a home for the Shar Pei rescue before we end up with him, he grabs your heart. Around here, $300 bucks is going to be hard to convince someone of, but in more affluent areas it is not so challenging to place some of the good mixed breeds for this rescue.
If you know anyone out there who is looking for a dog, about the size of a sheltie only with a really short coat like a lab.
He has a video on youtube, here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AiZPSMgaz0A. He looks larger in that than he is. He is longer like a Corgi with longer legs but pretty short.
Oh I hate when the computer is malfunctioning. Our prob is the trees are blocking our signal so we have slow downs a lot lately. It gets you so out of touch fast.
Good evening, just a quick note and then I will go back and read your posts. This laptop doesn't last long. Getting a new router Monday so hopefully will get it fixed.
Looks like my laptop quit before this was submitted.
Just wanted to say tho Sharon, that that guy got away with $143 Million. So, that $67 million fine is nothing. Too bad.
Good morning peeps!
i completed grass seeding except for a few places that require patching.
I have a lot on today's agenda ...... bulb planting (a lot) in front bed .... clean car (a lot of straw fragments in trunk and back seat) .... find and wrap the baby shower presents I purchased for the baby shower I am going to tomorrow ... laundry and house cleaning.
I just took Christmas cactus out of closet .... forgot to take it out yesterday.
Sunny today presently 54 with a high of 63 .... low of 41 tonight.
So good to hear from Sharon ..... thought she was lost in that awesome greenhouse.
Sounds like Evelyn is having a wonderful time .... terrific.
I hope a new router will solve all of Jeanette's computer issues.
I would enjoy viewing pictures of Lee's Halloween display.
JB ..... please share your Christmas Tree advertisement.
Love Ya All ....time to get to work
MARY
Mary,
If you look on this website: http://www.rob-lynfarm.com at the bottom there is a picture of the motly crew who works the cutting and sales. They all look like mountain men with their darn beards, but kids will be kids. I am the short chubby grey haired one in the front row. No beard.
I am not sure I am permitted to tell you to look at the site, but that is the only way you will see a picture of me. They twisted my arm to be on that one. LOL
Later. JB
Really a neat website JB. Love the picture, and now I know who I am talking to!! Guess I am going to have to get my hair done before talking to you tho, yours looks so nice!! Maybe that is why telephones are so good tho. LOL
Have a good weekend you all.
Oh that looks so nice, what type of trees are they? Here our Christmas trees are just Noble firs or Douglas, that is it. Sucks.
Kudos on JB's website .... terrific picture.
I never got to do any bulb planting ..... clean leaves off back deck and did some yard clean up .... watered grass seeds.
Vacumned, washed and wax my old car for tomorrow's journey.
Found some of the presents for the baby shower.
Here is a picture of the beginning of collecting leaves to shred for mulch.... trash can loaded with dried leaves
