When I cut my brugs back for the year, I leave about 6-10 inches on the main plant. All my cuttings are usually 8-12 inches long. Then I will mulch the ones in the ground with about 6 inches of mulch. Last year I only put about 2 inch's of mulch and that may be why most of them did not come back???

(susie) Hastings, MI(Zone 5a)

So it wont hurt to cut right back ? & your telling
Me I won't kill them ?

(Linda Kay) Amarill, TX(Zone 7a)

Depending on how cold they get, but if you mulch the base of the plant, they may come back. Your cuttings should root in just a few weeks. Then plant them in a small planter till spring time! That way, if the main plant does not make it, you will have new ones!
I have rooted cuttings in a cup of water, in a cup of wet sphagnum moss, and also by laying the cutting on its side, covered half way with soil, and I get multiple plants from that cutting!
If your plant is in a pot, bring the whole thing inside. You can still take cuttings from that one, and multply it for next year!

good advice, I am a big believer in laying cuttings sideways..

Ok I have to ask what is a brug?

(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

good morning, houssee301, welcome to the Group..
She's About to...
Brug is short for Brugmansia, and the waiting is so long we get excited when we have one about to bloom..

I made some bacon and mini omelets, help yourselves.... I have to get ready for work.

Thank you. That is a beautiful flower.

FLOYD, VA(Zone 6a)

Going to take my cutting today. I think this year I am going to go the bubbler route. We'll see how that goes.

Been waiting all Fall for this to bloom. Finally!! When Fruity was here she thought there was something wrong with this plant. It is a Leopard Plant and it is supposed to look "Diseased". :)))

Neener that is so pretty!
Laura, a brug is also called an angel trumpet, and once you have one, you will be addicted too! They are so pretty, and the smell at night when they bloom is to die for! Pink, white yellow, orange, single, double or tripple bloom. We all want one of each! OK, maybe two or three...

(susie) Hastings, MI(Zone 5a)

GM ALL :) I 'm about ready to go in for my blood draw soon but had to stop in & read all the great Pointers .

Question When you say you lay the cutting on its side or laying down you do not cover with soil right ?
just lay it on top the soil & Hope it roots ?? from the little nods ?
will be back later in the day for my answers :) Hehee

(Linda Kay) Amarill, TX(Zone 7a)

No, don't cover it all the way, about half way is all it needs, and keep it moist. Once you see little shoots coming up, let it grow a bit more, then you can bury it if you want, but not needed! They take root pretty fast.

Good luck at the Dr, this morning!

I managed to cut back one brug yesterday. Too much going on. I cut down Maya. I was in a huge hurry to beat the rain and after I had chopped it off I realized that it had 2 or 3 blooms that were twanging. My DH would kill me if he knew. He has been having fits that there are blooms on everything and it is getting so late. I keep telling him I need to get these in and he keeps stalling me.

ACK!!!

(Linda Kay) Amarill, TX(Zone 7a)

Neener, keep them in water, they will still bloom!

Beautiful blooms Debra! I have my monster white about to open, and the yellow one, and another one that has not bloomed yet! Waiting to see what color it is! I think that is half the fun, waiting and guessing!
Debra, all those cutting you sent me are doing very well, they must be a foot tall already! I have them in small pots for now, so they will be easy to bring in when it gets cold!
Susie, Dr Suess and naughty nick is orange!

(susie) Hastings, MI(Zone 5a)

oh Thank you LK I Have not looked them up when i saw the co-op i just bought :) HEHE there was a couple that sold out so i didn't get them . this is really very adictive when you cannot go anywhere & Tied to the computor i knew i should have never bought the itouch big trouble.
have a great day I'm watching :)

Warner Robins, GA(Zone 8b)

I think it's FABULOUS that you bought that itouch! You get to stay in touch with all of us! Technology is AMAZING huh? My son has an itouch and Keith & I have iphones.....we'd be lost without them!

FLOYD, VA(Zone 6a)

Shucks LK I wish I had know that they would still bloom. I thought about sticking them in water, but then I figured it wouldn't work. They are in the compost pile now. Oh well, maybe I can try that with some of the others that are close.

(Linda Kay) Amarill, TX(Zone 7a)

OH NO! Not only will they bloom, but they will root for new plants! I would go rescue it, and put it some water! See what happens!

(susie) Hastings, MI(Zone 5a)

FLOYD, VA(Zone 6a)

You are welcome Susie!!

(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

Neener, I got a very nice card, too. It is with the other card handmade by you on the mantle. Too pretty to tuck away in my card collage drawer.

Debra that little lover is a Carolina Wren. They are my favorite birds of all. They are small and very feisty and sing like crazy. I have seen them take on woodpeckers here 5 times their size. They always make a nest behind the spare tire on one of our SUV's. We end up having to let it parked until the birdies are gone. :0) Enjoy!

Kansas City (Joyce), MO(Zone 5a)

Things are getting back to normal at least normal for me, my Mom had a "mild" stroke Saturday, but she is doing pretty good now. She is in physical therapy now and they are working her hard....she is so cute. She had a severe stroke about 13 years ago, this one weakened her weak side again but she seems to be bouncing back.

Neener thank you for the lovely card. It is soooo cute. I sat it on the table for everyone to see.

Debra if you would like to share some brug cuttings I would be happy to take some. I am redoing my Moms plant rack for when she get homes and it will give her something to look forward to. I will send you postage. Predicting rain for us over the weekend.....could use it thru the week not so much on the weekend tho....Farmers are going like crazy, they were combining around my house until about 3am, I get up at 4:30am, not so good....rofl. My head may hit my desk today when I fall asleep. Haven't seen my house in daylight since Saturday, leave in the dark getting home in the dark. Still have brugs blooming in the solar room.

Welcome housse301, glad to meet you.

(Linda Kay) Amarill, TX(Zone 7a)

Joyce, glad to hear your Moms stroke was a small one and she is doing better! My Dad had multiple strokes 10 years ago, and they left him paralysed on his right side, he can't walk, talk or do much for himself! And when Mom passed away 4 years ago, us kids have been taking turns taking care of him! He is in Washington now with my Brother, but I am getting ready to go get him the end of the month. I will have him till March, then my Sister in Michigan will take him! It makes it easier knowing we can shuffle him around, cause it is a lot of work!

Kansas City (Joyce), MO(Zone 5a)

Linda Kay, I am so sorry to hear about your Father, that is a so hard on everyone, but glad you all help one another. That is a saving grace for sure.

Haven't seen my house in the daylight since Saturday morning so I don't know what is blooming, needs water, or just flat gave it up......should be home earlier today.

Henderson, NC(Zone 7b)

God love your Mom, happ, and your Dad, LK.

This pic is of our backyard yesterday with an almost full moon hanging over the trees and fog rolling in. Our changing leaves should be about peak now but are late compared to past years.

Edited to say that sign at the bottom of our field that looks like two eyeballs is hubby's practice target.

No update from Susie today?

Kansas City (Joyce), MO(Zone 5a)

Ohhhh, so glad you told me what the eye balls were this close to halloween could be really really scary!!!!!

(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

Joyce, I have lots of cuttings rooting right now, and some root balls.. I still have alot to get to Fate from all the ones she sent me last year.
I am so sorry for all your folks and their ill healths as they decline, I have gone thru all of that with all of mine and now they are gone, and thank goodness I have you all to worry about and love. My prayers for you abound with strength and patience.
Faye, DO NOT SEND POSTAGE! sheesh!

I hope susie is okay.
Here is my days journal:

Son came over tonight to peruse the big tubs left outside, they are blooming and he says
" How come you don't have these at my place>"

I just looked at him, " you don't water or feed or pick off worms or spray for bugs, thats why"

what a dummy! LOL He is good with his perennials I put in, he mows around them. LOL
I stopped at a family owned place called Hillside Feed and Seed today, and decided I am going back to swap cuttings of brugs for their special plants I don't have that they have too many of. I am now in love as this place is on my way home and close enough to go to on lunch' I signed up for the points earned rewards thing. I got this stuff from them and I just sprinkled this stuff for all kinds of bugs and fungus gnats in all the inside pots and tubs, I went thru a whole can just inside. I am going back for more for the outside plants to come in.
It is a Bonide product. I did get the Judo from Gordon, but that stuff scares the bejeezes out of me. I don't want my Duke to die from sniffing around those pots.
Judo sounds like it would hurt him.
Alex is blooming away he is so cute, Dola is outstanding, CG is still yellow and Maya has three blooms tonight, good thing, since she is coming in this weekend. The little nub I stuck in a pot of outside plants this past spring has rooted and is throwing off shoots. It was from the side shoot I took off Chrissy.
Stopped off at DD's ( the single mother 39 yr old) and she was crying out of frustration of being a mother of a 16 soon to be 17 yr old son. Like a good mother, I could only hug her and tell her this too shall pass..He got a D on his report card. It was devastating to her .. and it is in Algebra, and I bit my tongue cuz I never went past 8 th grade general math. And, he is a good boy.. she could be crying cuz he got a gal pregnant or something like that.. Right? Her Pendulas Pink and Flamenco both had blooms, but the B Aurea I gave her was fighting for life, so I clipped the stems off and told her to keep the root ball in the basement this winter, and we will put it in the ground this spring. I brought home a stem of B aruea and a stem of PP, which originally had come from AuntB.
I am so tired. work at 7 tommorrow, it is so dark out when I leave and so dark when I get home.. Bleah. I used the flashlight to go pluck ripe yellow 4 o clocks and dried TenTen jmg pods.
So much dirt and leaves on the downstairs steps I am waiting for them to sprout. I caught another mouse in the trap out in the garage. That is 6 this Fall. They eat my seeds.
Okay,
I am done..

Nice haul of plants Faye! I swear I am going out today and getting in the rest of my brugs. My heart is just not in it this year. I should have left them in pots and then I could have just brought them all back in. Brought in the last of the hibis last night and now I can't even move around in my garage. The gardenia standard is in my office and there are plants everywhere. Maybe we could get a group deal on greenhouses?? :0)

(Linda Kay) Amarill, TX(Zone 7a)

Morning everyone! Geesh, sounds like you all have been very busy! Debra, tell me more about the stuff you put in the pots for bugs! Does it work on skeeters? Hubby swears I have skeeters breeding in the dirt, in all my pots!
Hope you all have a great day!
