This little sweetheart went by us last night. Just about 5 miles East of us. Did quite abit of damage to some houses, horse farm and other outbuildings. No people or animals were hurt. Just made a mess and will cost these poor souls more money. They are all good country people who are trying to survive as is. Prayers for them all.
Thank God for the 1/2 inch of rain but question how it was delivered.
Plant propagation part XXI based on my own experience
What a picture! It looks like a painting. I hope the out-buildings and crops ready to harvest were insured (looks like a farming area) Very glad to hear no one was hurt! I will keep them in my prayers.
Jill
Lee ~ You are in my prayers. I have many days like that and find it difficult to get out of bed even, though I most times do. Then I end up doing nothing worthwhile then I get mad at myself for accomplishing so little. Another pointless activity...take care and know that others are thinking good thoughts of you. (Thanks for checking in...)
Jeanette ~ Have they figured out what is wrong with Bob? You must be worried sick, though you seem quite brave. You and he are also in my prayers.
Sharon ~ How are you today? And your DH? ("Ditto" the above statement) I agree with you on the credit card issues. I use debit cards and Discover and one B of A Visa which I had for about 20 years. No fees, pay balance use cash rewards on both as well as the PayPal debit card is now paying rewards. It used to be a good money market account and I put a lot more money in there, but now the interest rate is so low I don't bother with keeping so much in there. Now they are giving rewards on your purchases...I guess to keep the economy flowing...who knows?? I used to just use it for ebay stuff as I used to be a seller, though just "mid-range", no "store", no website or anything like that. Mainly I sold gardening books I no longer wanted and also garden magazines. Does anyone want any?
Dawn ~ That would be cannibis sativa, but not, it is canna...LOL!! You are SO funny!! The papyrus - I am allergic to it. It has little paper fibers that you can breathe in...if you are sensitive like I am. We couldn't grow it here either unless we have a garden pool or some kind of water feature, but none yet...still that would not be on my plant list, though it is pretty.
Mary ~ If you get twice that amount you can plant some in fall and others in spring and see which works best in your area...don't worry, I have plenty.
Jill ~ Whoops! I did not even read the flyer yet...sometimes I don't pay attention to the important things. Still that was the size I thought it was going to be as I think I may have looked it (The willow) up before in one of my garden books. I am really looking forward to seeing it in bloom.
Dave ~ It is really great that you are feeling better. Keep it up and don't dig any more trenches, OK? I took several weeks to dig mine as I just did a little at a time, since I knew that was all I could do without serious pain issues.
Well everyone, have a wonderful day and I hope that you all have perfect weather, for today is a special day...it is the *present* that we have all been given.
~ Evelyn
Pentas....

What is that Evelyn? I thought it was a hydrangea, but neither the flower or the leaves look like it. Very pretty. Is it a penta?
I went in an got Bob at the hospital today. He had an inflamation in his lungs. The pa said "kinda" like a COPD but did not come right out and say it was one. He had a machine that makes oxygen so he uses that and a nebulizer he has to use. Don't know how long. But does feel better.
I saw that little guy on the news JB. Sure glad you didn't have him around your place.
I was wondering about that Evelyn. Putting money in Paypal's money market. But, they just barely pay more than anyone else. Plus they are not covered by FDIC. What kind of "rewards" are they giving? I have not gotten any. 'course I sent the item back. LOL Even CDs pay so little I think I will put my $20 in my mattress. LOL
Sidney, speaking of coleus. I took a cutting off of one of the very small leafed ones from a planter in front of a store today. Forgot all about it. Better get it in water.
Plant is pentas or egyptian star. it comes in pink, red, white, lavender and red with white stripe.
me me me I always want books dmail me what you have please ...pretty pretty please with sugar on top...oh yea and the cherry......
nast tornado. even the little ones are not nice. some have been as wide as a mile across. talk about a major relocation specialist.
Jeanette: Glad to hear bob has come home. sorry to hear about his copd like problem. I am always thankfull for being able to get outside. You are in my prayers.
here is miss mercy. she is visiting with her little sister Lily and mommy
I may not be on much this weekend
Dave
I think that little girl likes you Dave. LOL
Had a good day. Cleaned house and did the wood floors, cleaned DH's man cave, which is his side of the great room where he watches TV.
I got his paperwork he has been procrastinating about with Citigroup. It is an annuity he got when we worked for Primerica, which turned into Travelers, which turned into Margaretten, which turned into Chemical, which turned into Chase, which turned into JP Morgan Chase. It was funds from working for Primerica/Travelers, as part of their pension plan. I had it on my list for the day but it was not on his list. (He does not have a list)......So he had to speak to the young man on the phone to tell him it was alright for me to take charge of the phone conversation and he was just totally irritated that I had chosen that moment. He has had the paper work since Aug 5th and had to be in by October 1. If I had had a gun, I think I would have tried to shoot him. Well that is off my list, now all I have to do this Sunday is the taxes for 2009. I got sick when I was doing them and no big hurry because I owe no money. Have to make income to owe taxes....
We were only 99 today but will be 102 tomorrow. My worker will be here tomorrow so I will get a bunch of things done.
Jnette, the roots we are going after are tree roots. COPD is what they told me I had when the lung specialist discovered I had the inflammation bronchitis caused asthma. It is really scary when you cannot breathe. One night I sat straight up in bed trying to say, I cannot breathe but could not talk.. It passed in about 20 seconds but that was a very long 20 seconds. The medicine in the nebulizer makes you hiper.
Sidney, tomorrow I am going to take cutting of my coleus. They are so beautiful I cannot believe it. They have withstood the heat but they are in the partial shade of the street scape trees.
Jill, what have you been doing?
Evelyn, who would buy the old magazines and books. I have been throwing away money.
Dave, I will look to see what books I have. I have many gardening books I have not looked at in years. Your little Merry is adorable.
Glad you are feeling better. You have enough pretty women praying for you to feel better. LOL.
Pentas are a very popular flower in the SW because they can take the heat. The nurseries are filling up with all the spring flowers. In the SW you plant your spring flowers in October and November. The just sit there, look pretty and grow roots. When the heat hits in the spring they just burst into growth and are good until May when the real heat hits.
I am waiting for the snapdragons and violets. But I do not think what I want will be here for a few weeks. That is OK because I have so much to do.
JB and everyone, my funk has passed, which is good. Just had to do physical work. I did that in the house. I walked the houses I advise the landscape owner this morning and he knows I was not happy. But he said, I have changed. 10 years ago I would have gotten mad. Now I tell him I am disappointed and why is he no doing his job. I do not remember ever getting angry with him, but he does. I told him, if he ever saw me crying, run for the hills because I am so mad, I am ready to explode.
Linda, you need to get up and start walking backward. It is very difficult for your brain and it will give your brain a workout. And you can turn around counter clockwise 5 times while standing in front of a mirror. Stop, wink at yourself. Nine out of ten times it will make you laugh or at least feel better. Please let me know if this helps. It helped me but I am one strange person.
Dawn, I am with you. If I had all that land I would fill it with something invasive but I would also want something that would not let the weeds grow amongst it. LOL. How is your water problem?
Also, if you burn the weeds, afterward you need to put down an pre-emergent to stop the seed left behind from germinating. It will take about two years and then you will be fine. What do you think Dave?
Love you all and I will check in tomorrow after gardening all day in 102 heat.
My problem is I need to put the pre-emergent down now or it will be so dry it will seed anyways. I burnt them last year and put down pre-emergent and the kind of weed killer that is supposed to make the soil infertile for a year and one bottle it said 2 years. I think things had already started germinating because this year it did not work as it had in the past. I wish I could find the liquid pre-emergent because there is no water on the other side unless I hose but it is not easy with our vehicles over there and needing to keep dragging it around while my stupid water pressure is failing with all my cycles perpetually running one or another.
Jeannette I hope your Bob is ok. That is a serious problem. Which I am sure you know.
Yeah to invasive plants that block out weeds. I love a good coyote bush, but I need the greener and taller varieties, I only have the short one. Wish I could get a good trench going and some kind of good water build up over there and let my horse tails run a mock.
Morning Everyone,
Just a beautiful day today. In the 70's no humidity and a bit cloudy. The ocean is beginning to get rough do to the hurricane activity in the Atlantic. Nothing to worry about. Not even rain expected. Being Sat. my SIL is off today and working on the vehicles. Daughter is working a horse show at the Horse Park and I am going to plant cuttings that have rooted, plus take some cuttings.
I need to find a cheap wet cat food. Cadillac is discontinuing theirs and now I have these five miserable cats to feed and although they are cute and adorable, they eat like five horses. Not sure horses were not cheaper. LOL
As far as the Pussy Willows go, they will spread out before they get tall. That discription I thought, was misleading. The are Bushy and short...........maybe some do get to be taller, but I like these because they make a lovely hedge or individual bush. These in the picture are about 5 years old. They grow very fast and love plenty of sun and water. Not as fast growing as the regular white or pink ones. They have such fine leaves and beautiful burgandy stems in the winter. I just love them.
Off to enjoy the weather while it lasts, winds are picking up coming in from the ocean, so who knows what the rest of the day will bring. LOL. Hugs. JB
I hope by now you all have your pussy willows. I am not sure if Dave and Dawn go theirs but i have not been able to keep up with the posts as well as I should. If you two did not get yours I promise nest year you will have some. Love you all. And, do not worry about what you can send me. I just enjoy sharing and if one of you has something you think I can grow in the greenhouse and sell, fine, send it on,but give me instructions. Half the things you guys talk about I have no clue what the H they are. LOL I am not up on all the things you guys are. Too many, Too old and Too tired. LOL. Later. Hugs JB
Oh did you send me some. If you did, when did you send it. I have not received them. Last night we both got home at 11:30 at night and never checked the mail. I should go to see because something could be at the post office and they close early. Gosh.
Thank you.
Yes Dawn, you ask for some....I sent them the 16th so they are no doubt dead by now.
Sorry about that. They would have been delivered about the 16th priority mail. The tracking number is 9405 5036 9930 0340 5601 95. Good luck.
Oh crap. How much was shipping? I will send it. 16th August? Thank you so much though. Good grief. Oh I wished I followed closer. Sometimes I don't get on the computer or if I do it is a quick minute so I skim through posts if they are longer.

JB, so glad you got a nice day. You deserve it. Enjoy it, it won't last long enough. Boy did it rain last night!! I never wake up because of it but I sure did last night. That is good 'cause I haven't watered other than the livingroom deck in ages.
Going to try to get down and pick the green tomatoes today. I am afraid if I don't they will rot out there. Especially with the rain we are getting. It's that time of year. This and the spring. So wet. This is like it was the whole month of June and into July. Then it got hot for about a month and a half, and now it is raining again. That was our summer.
What do you guys do with green tomatoes? I am going to pick the ripest ones out and try to ripen them. Then what?
I gotta tell you guys, those black pussy willows are beautiful when they are blooming. I have never seen them before. I understand tho that you have to keep the rabbits away from them.
Well, I got a new phone system yesterday in the mail from Costco so guess that is my job today. Bob got it all charged up last night so now I will plug them all in and see if this one works. I bought a system off of ebay and nothing worked about it. Panasonic. This one from Costco is also a Panasonic.
Gotta get going folks, ttyl
Jen, Green tomato pie is good, make it same as apple. Also, if you wait until the green turns a bit red, they are easy to ripen if you sit them outside in the sun. I do it all the time, that way they do not rot on the vine. Wish you were here, I picked them today and Oh God I got so many I am wondering what to do with them. I do not want to make sauce today. I have to much else to do. Crap.
Howdy everyone:
spent the am getting my nursery condensed to prep for winter. I am planning to put on frost blanket then cover with fall's leaves.
we went to a greek festival (lunch watch some dancers and shop) it was fun but expensive. with the high being mid 90's and under a tent with no moving air made it soooooo hot. on the way back we were entertained by mercy making up words and singing to the tune of twinkle twinkle little star.
Thats about it for today. its nap thirty.
Dave
Here is a picture of what I call the "Crazy Willow". It is field grown and dried and used in cut flower arrangements. My neighbor has fields of it and sells it in the Fall and Winter when the leaves are off of it. He sells bunches of sticks of it in Phila. and NYC. I got mine in my Easter Flowers from my kids this year. I keep my cut flowers for a week or more because I change their water, etc. and they are usually fresh cut so they last a good two weeks if I am lucky. Within those two weeks, this stick that was in the bunch rooted. I put it in a pot and this is what I got. I realized then, that it is the same willow that he grows and sells. You guys may be interested in something like that if you have room and want to sell to florists. I do not know the name of it. I will look it up if I can and find out what it is, unless of course you guys already know, then tell me. The sticks look like grapevines, but are not of course.
It is hard to see because it is on my back deck but it is so pretty and so tall I hate to throw it away. I may see if it survives in a pot over the winter. Maybe I will even put it inside the barn. No room in the GH.
ROFL What a great picture of my broom handle behind the pot. LOL Sorry. It is a bit hard to see but you got the idea, I am sure. JB
corkscrew willow? It should be a good one to grow because not to many peps grow it.
nice pic
Bet you're right Dave. I had a Corkscrew Willow tree in Seattle. About 15 feet tall. I think it was about 10 years old so it really started screwing the limbs and branches. Yes, it would be a good one for florists. But, you would need quite a lot. Did your neighbor let it make a bush or a tree?
Then for some reason it broke off right at the ground. Don't know if the root rotted or what.
I got them today JB and they look healthy as they could be. Thanks. How much do I owe? I can't remember what those size flat rates are. I did not even know I got them because I was gone all day until late in the PM, a few hours ago? Thanks.
I killed a CS Willow.
Helinzn, I am glad they arrived. You owe me nothing in return. I am happy to share when I can.
Jen, My neighbor grows fields of this Corkscrew willow bushes. He harvests them i the fall and makes a tidy sum selling them to florists. Never get to be trees since they harvest every year.
I am so angry just now I could scream. I have been selling in the DG Marketplace for sometime now and am very happy with the completed sales and the replies I received in return. You seldom get any actual feedback( it is too difficult for people to figure out how to do it, but the few dmails I get are very positive. I think their form of feedback could be iimproved on. q234vAnyhow,every once in awhile there are people who sign on, purchase something and never figure out how to return to complete the transaction. I have complained about this to the Adm. but they can do nothing about it. Some people do it just for kicks I am sure. Yet, the seller takes the time to process the order and then after about ten days, you need to cancel it because you can not hole the items any longer.
I got an order on Sept. 17th and they did not give me a full address so I could determine the cost of the shipping. I wrote them back and ask for a full address and zip code so I could invoice them. This morning I got an dmail from the Administration telling me I need to "manage the order" I received on the 17th. The seller is waiting for a reply.
WELL, I hit the ceiling and wrote them back and told them if they want to monitor my sales, do it properly. Plus I tore into them regarding the situation and I will no doubt be thrown off the list. I want you to know if that happens, I will not go down quietly. I am so angry. If they say it was an automatic followup, they are not telling the truth because I have never received one before. It was signed DAVE no less. JB
good morning all:
JB sorry they are not on top of the situation. you would think they would be as thats a way they generat funds. I get the notices all the time. I had one of those that fell into a limbo that I can't do anything about. somehow I am unable to cancel it and I have notified admin but all it got me was the sound of crickets. they also send you a notice if you have a dmail sitting unanswered. there is most likely some formula or application that generates the auto reply.
I hope they don't kick you off as they know the marketplace is a big mess. I wrote them a while back and they replied that they were working on cleaning up the marketplace to make it more user friendly.
Hey maybe we can all collect up stems and sell them to our own florists. how much do you charge for the stems JB?
well we are baleing the grass and begining to condense things down. I managed to get most of the main row into a small area that will be juniper or holly to help absorb the sound from the road out back. I am thinking about doing a small waterfall in the corner of the yard with a forest pansy red bud to provide shade for everyone.
the waterfall will start like 6 feet bck from the front. I am hopeing to build it up with other large rocks, or build a plywood. We had one at the arbouretum. Ir was kool as we could open it up to do mainrence
well thats about all for the morning ... stay cool and dry... the pic is of my blue angel before the shade was all cut down. next will be a current pic of blue angle.
Dave
Oh Dave!! That is SAD!! You have my sympathies!
JB...maybe we should send admin some of those cork-screwu willows (oops?)
Avianut......SMACK !!!!!!! Did you feel that? I am still cranky as an old goat. I hate it when I get so angry it ruins my day. If I could cuss on here I would, but since I am on thin ice as it is, I had better not. LOL JB
To each of you guys who JB sent black pussy willow plants to, she needs feedback. Therefore, you need to send some even though she didn't charge you for them. She even paid the postage. Therefore, you need to take a minute to do this. It is a form of advertisement for her, a small vendor.
I tried but don't know if I did something wrong, but it wouldn't accept it. Let me know if you have success and I will try again. I wrote to Admin and told them about it. In all the years I have been on DG I don't think there were many feedbacks I left that actually went smoothly. Maybe if enough of us complain they might do something about it. They finally fixed the "search" feature. So maybe this will be next.
Hey, I meant cork-screwthem willows, not YOU! (Sent TO admin, not to you...)
Avianut I knew what you meant I was being naughty. I am having such fun on Facebook playing Cafe World and Baking Life. I have fun remodeling my places and making money and spending it. Takes very little thought and less brains.
I did farm town forever but got burnt out at how time consuming it was and my hands were getting tired of clicking. they would have gliches and screw with my points.
I did give feedback to someone I traded with in Europe once. I can do it, if nothing changed from when the real MAN was in the drivers seat, not the one who sent you a message today.
Don't be mad just talk to someone who cares there, like old staff.
Thanks JB, you will be getting feedback from me, if it is not screwed up and it will allow me to do it. Otherwise I will send it to admin and let them add it on for me.
Ok did the post. its kind of tough to see where to fillin the coment.
well we are still in the low 90s so its hot. we managed to get all the sweet potatoe vien out of the greenhouse. some of the runners must have been 20 feet long. I really like the way the nursery is starting to look. I will send pics later as I get them.
anyone know how to fill in or dry out the 3 mud holes I have out there? I put stepping stones and large gravel but thats just filler at best. I know from what I have read. the rock will work its way down and finally get lost.
have a great evening
Dave
I found out that you have to leave the feedback thru Watchdog. It does work. I was just clicking on her name but that didn't work
She didn't have any from this site. So, hopefully you all will do it right.
Dave you might have to put in a drainage system if it is that bad. Yes, the rock will disappear. And gravel. I would like to do the same to a couple of bad places in my driveway but I suppose I need one of those guys to tell me what and how to do it. They cost money. LOL I keep saying I want to pave that much of it. But you have to have some kind of base for the cement I am sure.
Jeanette ~ Is JB's name the name of her DG business, so I can leave feedback for her? Thanks!
I left feedback for her, by just clicking on her name. It was really quite simple. I must go back and see if it took, however....
Dave, go to goggle and type in "How do I get over wet soil areas in my greenhouse dry? It will tell you many different ways. Hopefully none will requite a trench. If it does, call me, I will send an angel. How is the water getting there in the first place. I need a photo. I am a great idea person, but someone else has to do the work.
My guy had to work yesterday but I got about 5 hours in. I went to home depot to pick up one thing and 1 1/2 hours later I left with $400 worth of items that were perfect for my driveway rehab. Had to wait at least 15 minutes for the spray paint screen to be unlocked and at least 20 minutes for the pots to be removed from the upper shelf. They were to heavy. Then I purchased 10 bags of 64 quarts Miracle grow potting mix for half price and had to wait another 10 minutes while that was loaded. The loader could not get everything into the SUV so I showed him how to rearrange everything so it would fit. I gave him $5 but he was very unhappy doing the loading during the whole loading. He may be a little mentally challenged so I did not want to complain. I have found that the mentally challenged individuals that Lowes and Home Depot hire, do not recognize or have a sense of humor or gratitude. They just do not comprehend those emotions. I complained a few years ago about a young man at Lowes and the manager explained the situation. I felt bad and will never complain again unless I know the individual is fully capable and just being an A**.
Well I worked inside this Sunday except or a few things. Did a full review of the irrigation. It is so upsetting when I find heads out of pots, or smashed into the ground. It is a good thing I have hearing like a bat. I can always hear a irrigation head out of whack. We are down to watering on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Well at 99 degrees, that is not enough so I rotated each line and walked the line to see what was going on. My landscape owner and I are going to have a short conversation tomorrow, in person.
My neighbors across the street are young. In their mid 40s. They have one daughter at USC and two in private high school. She had to go to work because of the economy and a reduction in his income. They are very special and fully support his mother. Her mother died when she was in college so I am her mother once removed. She is the manager of a Christian Dior shop at the new City Center. Opened 7 days a week and open until 11pm. So they are surviving but she is missing from their regular schedule.
I was in their back landscape and noticed all her fun pots she had on her favorite bakers rack on the patio were crisp. so she was at work today so I ask her husband to bring over all the crisp pots so I could rehab and make them more plant friendly. Well I placed all the pots in a 25 gallon flexible pot I got at Costco years ago. The first think I did was break a pot. Then when I got the dead plants and soil out of the pots I noticed they were not coated to prevent the pot from stealing all the water. They were clay pots. So I called him and told him there would be a delay because I had to get the coating before I could redo the pots. What should take me about 1/2 hour will now probably take a couple. No rest for the wicked. I have enough plants around the landscape, I do not have to purchase anything. But when I go to get the coating, something will catch my eye. I need to purchase some blinders.
I am coming back in order to make my rambling short stories. Like People Magazine.
JB, your willows were very happy yesterday and today not happy. I slowly soaked them and they are again happy. I do not understand because they are in the holding garden and that does get watered everyday.
JB, you are so like me. You question my integrity I get livid.
Jnette, how is Bob? My DH seems to be getting better. I made pasta today to go with Meat balls and sauce I made earlier. I think he had at least 4 helpings. That is his normal way of eating
Well I have a full day tomorrow gardening at home and a walk thru of the greenbelt. The weather is cooling the end of the week and I am so ready for that. Then Tuesday starts our 50th high school reunion. Dinner at an alumni home on Tuesday evening, just a few invited and then Thursday the picnic. I am not attending the final night dinner. Just to far on the other side of town and to late.
Anyway friend, good night. Love being sent your way and I will wait one day before I give JB a thumbs up so it does not look like we stuffed the ballot box.
