Plant propagation part XXI based on my own experience

Wrightstown, NJ(Zone 7a)

I hope so too, she and her hubby are going to Texas for the Winter (can you imagine living in Georgia and going to Texas for the Winter?) Wow, I would settle for Georgia. LOL
Anyhow, they want to find him a home before that I guess.

Wake up everyone......I did my exercises today. I am being a real good girl today.

Morrisville, PA(Zone 6b)

Ge, where does the time go? I have so much to do. I have been transplanting the Asiatic lilies from the front bed to a back bed ..... I ordered a considerable number of liles from the co-op here that I want to have in the front bed.

question .... how does one keep dirt from getting under fingernails? It is so annoying.

Evelyn .... the Sweet Peas arrived today .... Thanks

I best get back outside and do some more transplanting .... grrrr.

Wrightstown, NJ(Zone 7a)

Mary, I wear medical gloves....they are cheap and you can just throw them away. I still have days when I forget to put them on and then I just use a brush and scrub my nails.

Hope you all have a good night. Love and Hugs. JB

Tulsa, OK(Zone 6b)

I knew I liked this group. I just don't feel right unless I can feel the soil in my hands. the smell of fresh soil and the feel as I pot up new babies.

not much else to say but i am getting ready for winter already. I am tossing around weather or not to take cuttings from my new orleans crepe myrtles. they are so full looking and the hit they took last year just knocked the &*^% (snot) out of them. I bet you thought I was saying something naughty... you did didn't you...lol

I think its having the house empty except for me and kim has me mentally refreshed.
Have a great evening
Dave

JB, we all need times like that. Not doing anything constructive. I know who you are talking about but didn't know Sally had a bird. She is mad at me. Guess that is why. LOL.

Would it cost much to ship the bird, or would they want to do that if Lee could take it? Sometimes those things don't cost as much or are as dangerous as a person thinks. Doesn't cost anything to check.

I absolutely refused to wear gloves to garden with all my life, however I decided to try the Palmflex gloves 'cause everyone raved about them. Now, all of my sisters wanted some too. So, I bought 2 doz pairs and have about a dozen left if any of you are interested. $3.60 plus shipping per pair. They are mediums. If you don't know if they will fit, you can go on their website and they tell you how to measure your hand.

I know how you feel about getting your hands in the soil Dave. Even in Seattle when I would pull up a hand full of slug (yuck) I still never wore gloves until now.

Evelyn I got my seeds today too. Thank you so much. I love sweet peas but haven't had much luck with them because I don't have much sun. So, I will try one more time in a different place. LOL, Every time I try a different place. I had gorgeous ones in Seattle. They loved it against a wall. Reflected the heat I guess.

Well, I called a couple who I saw their names in the local newspaper and got myself committed to going to a PUD meeting. LOL, I guess because I always say, if you don't go to the meetings, you can't. If you don't vote you can't. Dave, I don't have the patience to write naughty words like you do. LOL

Las Vegas, NV(Zone 9a)

I am like JB, I wear the medical gloves. Or I am bare handed. I cannot function with the regular gardening gloves.

My worker is going to be here tomorrow and we have many things to do. I will try to take before and after photos.

Temperature today was 99. Going to be in high 90s next 7 days. I will just have to follow the shade.

I have many coleus I need to make cutting from but I think that can wait until next week.

DH says he has no back pain. Has not had any for about one week. Would that no be weird if all his back pain was actually kidney pain. That would be absolutely wonderful.

Dave I got some cutting from double bloom oleanders. I hope I root them correctly. I just got them from a DGr in Iowa. Any suggestions.

JB, I joined the site you did and I am going over there to find about rooting oleanders. I am going to be really busy tomorrow so probably will not be on until Sunday. Wish me luck.

Love you all.

Northeast, WA(Zone 5a)

I wear the medical gloves for some things but for working with soil, roots, etc. I wear the others. They are not like regular garden gloves. They fit. Not tight, but not loose either.

I took a cutting of a coleus that was in a large planter outside of a business the other day and am going to try to make a standard from it.

Sharon, that is not unheard of. Where back pain is caused by kidneys. Let's hope that would be the cure for him.

I hope you get the oleanders rooted Sharon. That would be cool. My daughter started some of the singles from seed. They turned out pretty good. But then she has patience for them to bloom. Not me.

I looked at the site but didn't find what I was looking for. Let me know if you do by joining Sharon.

Las Vegas, NV(Zone 9a)

I found several articles on the new site regarding rooting cuttings. I am going to root them in my cloner.

Tulsa, OK(Zone 6b)

good morning;

Oleander should be pretty straight forward. do be carefull of the sap as it is a bad irritant and poisionous. I would trim back the leaves remove a couple of rows of leaves and scrape the side to give more surface to root from.

ok what site are we talking about? someone email me a link Please, please please

dave

Wrightstown, NJ(Zone 7a)

Morning everyone..............Barney is now having the skidders..........what next. He was better yesterday but by evening after having some boiled chicken, not much, he got gasy and today he has diarrhea . Today is his birthday and he seems find except for that. I started Amforol and hopefully that will stop him. I am tired of this, but I do love that dog.

Dave, I found the site we are talking abo8ut when I was researching how to make Standard plants....It is a bit difficult to get around, but if you check things our and take your time, the people are very good about sharing. For example, today I got a note from one of the people that looked at my pictures in fragrant gardening and she told me that Starbucks will give you their coffee grounds and if you put them on the top of your gardenia containers they will help prevent the leaves from turning yellow. How about that? My kids make coffee every day so I am going to ask them to save me their grounds. You learn something everyday. The same person also knows a lot about the different soils and the mixing of coir and soil. There is a wealth of info there as well as here on DG, I am not trying to get anyone to move to another site, but I am merely saying the information is there is you are looking for it. They also have a plant file which I have not yet had time to look into. I am putting up photos now and gathering some info I was looking for. Best way to get there is google Learn2grow.com and go from there.
I am not sure you will be able to open the link. http://www.learn2grow.com
Enjoy. Dave you should have a blast there. You could share all of your information on a group that you could make up yourself. One of the ladies ask me to start a group on Fragrant Gardening, so I did, and we will see what happens. New ideas are always welcome. Hugs. JB

Northeast, WA(Zone 5a)

JB, first I have been meaning to tell you I was in a kind of health food store the other day and we were talking about brewers yeast and the guy told me it was good for helping to cure pets tummy problems. I immediately thought of Barney for however he worded it.

Second, I couldn't get that site up from your posting the other day so typed it in myself and then couldn't seem to move around in it to get anything I wanted. It was very discouraging. So, just now I tried from your posting above and it seemed to be easier. Don't know why the difference but I will see if I can't work with it better today. Thanks. I love the idea that coffee grounds might cure the yellow leaf drop on my gardenia. Will try it today. Also, this week is suppose to warm up again here for a week or so so maybe I can get a few ripe tomatoes.

I brought a few in the other day and did like you said JB with the newspaper covering them and believe it or not, I had BTs for dinner last night. (no L for lettuce) LOL they sure were good.

Well, it is dump day today and even tho Bob isn't 100% we are going to have to go or we won't be able to dig ourselves out so better get started. See the fog is moving in. Hope the sun is pushing it. LOL, have a wonderful day today guys. ttyl,

Off subject are any of you people of faith? Do any of you believe in Confirmations or signs? You don't have to answer here but it would be nice if you dmail me, to tell me the answer to this.

Northeast, WA(Zone 5a)

LOL Dawn, does this mean that if you don't like the answers you are going to drop out??? I hope not.

Rosamond, CA(Zone 8b)

Oh no. Oddly I don't know why I asked here. I could have went on the prayer forum.

Tulsa, OK(Zone 6b)

Personally I am a strong believer of them. I half way woke up talking and woke up my dw. she said I asked who the little man was in the hall way. about 5 min. later I got the call my grandfather had passed. he was in the hospital about a mile away. we were close.

need to do a new page. i will check out the site JB
Dave

Tulsa, OK(Zone 6b)

Rosamond, CA(Zone 8b)

That is a great site I added as my favorite.
Dave thanks for that story. That is so awesome. He came to say goodbye or I'm fine most likely. That is confirmation.

Tulsa, OK(Zone 6b)

I thought so.

I opened a blog chat or whatever its called. Please add me as a friend if you join
Dave

Rosamond, CA(Zone 8b)

On the learn to grow or one here about those kinds of experiences that you had with your grandfather? I assume gardening.

Las Vegas, NV(Zone 9a)

I was by the holding garden separating daylilies for replanting. I smelled my mother's perfume. I knew the smell because it was her favorite and I always purchased it for her because it was expensive. I turned but no one there but I knew she was there.

Las Vegas, NV(Zone 9a)

My worker did not show up again. I will have to find myself another worker. But I kicked butt. I did not the rehab completely done but at least 85%. I will finish it on Monday. I have to make labels tomorrow because I just more plants. irises, oleander cuttings and a few I will try to determine what they are.

It was 100 today and will be 104 on Tuesday. Going to be 100+ until Saturday. Oh My.

DH's back has not hurt again today. Hooray. Keep your fingers crossed. He is looking better but still not eating. Later.

Wrightstown, NJ(Zone 7a)

I felt like a truck hit me yesterday. Wow, I am not worth a darn. I did nothing but putz around on the computer and lay down and watched TV. I can not believe I wasted another day of my life. I do hope today is a better day. It seems to be. They are calling for two days of rain. Holy Crap.....I can't wait. I will hopefully be able to watch my little guys (the shrubs I planted) drink up and grow. We have irriagated them all summer and they survived. The red maple survived also. Thank you Lord. But, the baby Christmas firs are soooo unhappy.
The concolor are starting to die now. They are difficult to grow anyhow. I need fall weather and rain and then I might survive the winter. I may complain all winter and if I do, hit me.
Must feed birds....see you all later.
Dave I will hop over to Learn2Grow and add you now.

Pawleys Island, SC

Hi everyone,
I've been lurking a bit trying to catch up and I just thought I would say hi. Hope everyone is better now or at least having a better week. I am doing ok, I would like to get outside today, I have a huge lantana that has to be cut back now because I have a water leak and a water bill that is out of site. ( maybe that's why my lantana grew so large. LOL). I also need to feed my epis for the last time this season and get them ready to move indoors soon. I am trying to get things planted ( everything that will possibly survive) so that I don't have as many things to over winter and I have decided that any perennials I will grow for next year will be winter sown. I just don't seem to have the strength to fight the heat and bugs during the summer. I must read up on propagating from hardwood cuttings too. If I can do all my work in the wintry time frame ( mild as it is) I might actually get more accomplished.
Gotta go, Talk to you all later, Linda

JB, What is learn2grow?

Northeast, WA(Zone 5a)

Hope you get your rain JB. They are saying high 70s here all week but every morning I get up and dd the sky is gray and overcast. By the time the sun comes out it is only in the 60s and not going much higher. rains every night now.

Well, I thought Bob was on the mend so took him out for fresh air yesterday. He says he is better so far today. We'll see. Yesterday we made plans to go up and just sit on the lake shore and fish today, but think it is a little early for that for him. Maybe later in the week if it does get nicer.

If he doesn't get better soon he isn't going to be able to help me clean up all these decks for winter. Right now if the weather holds we are ok but he is in no shape to help. Not even to use the ATV to get the trailer around here to put stuff in. I would do that but it is a 3 wheeler and I don't feel safe on it. Sure wish we had held out for a 4 wheeler. Oh well. ttyl

Northeast, WA(Zone 5a)

OK guys, I joined learn2grow but find it very frustrating. Guess I hate learning new things. Can't find anybody. There are 4 JBs, I don't know how many Jacquies, but a bunch and they all are pictures of sunflowers or birds, shoes, etc. I guess I don't have time for it.

Wrightstown, NJ(Zone 7a)

Oh please Jen, I am not JB everyplace I go. Some places actually know who I am. LOL
If you use my email address you should be able to find me. I will go back on and see if I can find you. Do not be discouraged. We are all learning and frankly I am not meeting too many people just now, I am just setting up my pictures. I hope your hubby is better soon.

I feel like H today again. I wish I would get over this whatever it is. My head is a mess, my stomach is upset, and I am cranky as a hungry horse. JB

Rosamond, CA(Zone 8b)

I will try to go there but I have a large state application to fill out so it won't be today for sure. I should not even be doing this at this time, just saw a lot of activity going on and had 3 dmails too. So popped in.

Ibartoo I bet that is partly why your lantana went mad. Gosh dang it. Mine must need more water than they get because none perform that well. I have them in pots.

Tulsa, OK(Zone 6b)

Jeanette I agree on its clunkyness of the site. sounds like time for a new toy .... (insert cheesey smile)

went to a tile granet and slate auction today. boy what great prices. we got the tile we need to finish the fireplace for $3.00 a sq ft. it was a diamond pattern on webbing a pattern like, sorta kinda... well you know.

yes its a bad brain day. I hate it when that happens.
have a good evening

JB ~ Sorry you are out of sorts. Maybe you got the flu from your dog. Hope you feel better. I have been out of sorts since I finished my one area near the driveway. Just hurting, especially the shoulders that I should not be overusing. All weeded and mulched, though not as mulch as I would like. My compost is coming out slowly, so I have been buying the 3cu.ft. bags 3 at a time to supplement my own compost. I should have just ordered a truckload (or 3..) and hired workers to weed then mulch, but I cannot imagine them doing weeding. Still some still do that kind of work. Most are older now, and too old to do it anymore (like me...LOL!!). I do hope you get a decent amount of rain as I am hoping for a nice weekend and following week for Jeanette as she needs sunshine. Too bad you can't just switch, huh? Sharon, Dawn and I will have more than enough of the heat for about a week, they are predicting, so today I spent most of it watering everything, making sure it is all soaked. Except I don't water the area by the road and along the driveway much as it is to be very drought tolerant and I can ruin the plants that don't like summer water. The small species cyclamen have just appeared there and I must take a picture, as I could not remember exactly where I planted them. They will all get water soon enough once it starts to cool down, but then they won't need much.

Jeanette ~ I can't believe that it is still raining after all that talk about the ridge of high pressure all up and down the PNW down to southern CA. I sure hope it gets better for you, though it isn't helping Dawn or Sharon. Maybe next week it will be better and then your tomatoes will ripen. Are they in sun? Is that where you will plant your sweet peas?

Sharon ~ Wow...was it Perfumer's Workshop Rose? I use to buy that for my mom, many years ago. She liked the violet perfume, but I do not remember by who. My memory seems to be going bit by bit. I have not felt her presence near me lately, but it has been a while now.

Dawn ~ Sorry you have to be working on Sunday. I have worked many Sundays. I am sure you will be glad when this heat goes away...again...

Linda ~ How is your weather now? Is it hot there too?

Dave ~ You have been awfully quiet lately. You aren't skipping out on us "old broads" quite yet are you? Are you still feeling poorly? I hope you are better. I went to the learn2grow website and I am not too sure about it. I read what it had to say about seed starting and whoever wrote the article had one glaring error according to what I have read. It stated, "...hold the seedlings by the stems, not by the leaves...", now everywhere else I have read the opposite was true. If they are aiming to be the "de facto" source of information for the home gardener, well I will withhold my judgement, as it is just one article, by one person, though it does represent them as it is given as official advice.

Ok...I found this picture of my departed "Midnight"...not taking a nap, but just enjoying the dirt. I cannot figure out why cats take so many hours in cleaning themselves and then take a "bath" in the dirt... she used to get on the roof every night, so she could say good night at the window, with her beautiful emerald eyes.

LOL, I put some brewers yeast in the cats food yesterday and boy is she mad. She is still over here yowling at me. Guess I am going to have to go clean her dish and give her some clean food.

Your cat was beautiful Evelyn.

That is a real good buy you got for your fireplace Dave. Good for you. I am going to have to recover my kitchen counter and that is expensive. I think I have about 25 feet of counter in there. This time tho I think I will use granite or something like that and I want the back splash done all the way up. All I can see is dollar bills with wings on them flying out.

Gotta get busy. ttyl

Las Vegas, NV(Zone 9a)

Jnette, now is the time to do it. With the economy down, here all the granite is at rock bottom costs. Just need to find a good mason that knows how to lay it. I have granite and it is great.

Just woke up from a nap. Second one today. Must have wore myself out yesterday. Did not do a thing today so tomorrow will be full of getting today's and tomorrow's projects done.

Will work in the house in the morning and then outside later. Have to wait for the area I am working in to get in to the shade.

I have to redo a section of sprinklers near the top of the driveway. The water keeps hitting the driveway and staining it. But that can wait until it cools down to at least in the 80s.

Rosamond, CA(Zone 8b)

How great is that. I want granite but money is tight right now for extras like that. Maybe I will soon have more potential to do that.
love the kitty. I miss them.
