Plant propagation part XXI based on my own experience

Northeast, WA(Zone 5a)

Dawn, here is the other brug that just opened up. don't know if I could send more than one in a box or not. I may have to send them separate.

This is Cypress Garden Brugmansia

Well we are back to 100 and I am not happy. I have done very little gardening this week. I am not going to garden until it cools down. My helper is coming this weekend I have major root removal, I think. I can tell all the signs. Love you all but I am in a funk so I am just lurking.

Thumbnail by WormsLovSharon
Wrightstown, NJ(Zone 7a)

Here I am, the early bird looking for the worm. Or should I say ant. LOL No sign of anymore of those little buggers. I am sure they hitched a ride inside on the BPW and thought they found a new home. I got news for them. Ants and spiders make me crazy.
I had the exterminator here earlier this summer because I had the teeny weeney little ones all over eveything. IN THE HOUSE> He put some sort of paste near the window and in less than a week, they were all gone. No sign since until yesterday, but these were the larger size. I get the darndest things in my house, I also had a slug in one of my anthurium plants and I put salt around the edge of the plant thinking that woud keep him from taking his nightly walk and making the trail of slime on my carpet. It worked for awhile then he arrived again. Now that plant has been moved to the GH. Let him slime around out there.

I love this exterminator because everything he used is pet friendly. Inside and outside.

Sharon, I know how you feel, try not to get as depressed as I did. I was a mess for weeks. I am much better now because the weather is cooler and the sun is wonderful to sit on the deck and soak it up for a few minutes each day. That is so important to me.. I need light and this summer I did not get the sun because it was too hot. If I worked outside I was afraid I would get sick. Now I am good.

Still no rain. They say tomorrow night we may have some showers. Some of our oldest outdoor trees (not Christmas) are beginning to show damage. We have watered the magnolias, liliacs, holly and the ones in the field individually and with a soaker. I think we saved the Star Magnolia. Not sure about the other ones. Some shut down already for the winter, so it is difficult to know if the are going to make it or not.
I think I will take this day to rest a bit. I really worked hard yesterday and since I must go to the Chiropractor today, he was closed Monday for an emergency, I may as well just sew or do something easy today. Tonight I am taking my SIL for dinner for his birthday.

I am going to take my old Jeep Wangler to the body shop today for an estimate to have it painted. I am not going to buy a new one. This one runs like a charm and I love it, so I am going to have it painted. My present to myself. The salt air here causes rust and that can really do a number on the body of the cars.

I am also working on the ad campaign for the Trees. I have two posters completed but now I need to work on the ad copy and some magnets. I have plenty to do if I just get off my lazy old butt and do it. Have a good day when you all finally join me. Cheer up Sharon, this too will end. Hugs. JB

Sharon 'major root removal" of what?? Is that teeth or plants?? Hope it's plants.

My daughter and family left to go back to Seattle this a.m. so I'm just relaxing. Other than Bob got up and said he has the flu. Great. He has gone back to bed.

It is finally turning into a wonderful fall so far. In the mid to high 70s. Suppose to get into the 80s tomorrow. I am still holding out for some ripe tomatoes. As long as it doesn't freeze I am ok.

Well, think I'll just kick back and maybe read. ttyl,

Dave, are the for your own landscape or are they destine for your future sales.

If you plan to sell them, I'll be your 1st customer .... but I do not want it until next spring.

Tomorrow I will have the surgery on my left eye. My oldest granddaughter is transporting me this time.

Were are the remodeling pictures? I'm anxious to see them.

Mary

Northeast, WA(Zone 5a)

Very healthy looking plants Dave. My helebores that I got in the coop are growing now. I have them in 8 inch pots, 3 to a pot 'cause they are small but I might have to heel them in for the winter.

Merry, if Dave is selling them now, it would be the time to plant them as they will get established over the winter.

However, you should not bend over for a time after your surgery.

Rosamond, CA(Zone 8b)

Nice Jeanette if it is really big, then I probably can't afford postage on both anyways so one if fine. I love it though. Mine only has had one bloom so good grief I don't know why. I need to fertilize maybe one more time.

Morrisville, PA(Zone 6b)

No ..... doc said bending is OK .... but only lift exteremly light stuff.

OK ..... if I should plant them now ... then I am ready to buy now.

Today I placed teeny tiny baggets over what appears to be seed pods on my new guinea impatiens .... now all the literature I have read says they are sterile and do not set seeds.

Well ... if they are seed pods yipee! ... If not ....I have not sufferer a lost ...just disappointment.

Mary

Northeast, WA(Zone 5a)

Dawn, they take lots of fertilizer, once a week, and lots of water. Depending on how hot it is, sometimes twice a day. However, I find that if you put them in the shade you can normally get by with once a day. Their leaves are big and the direct sun wilts them I think. Otherwise they can tolerate the heat.

Don''t worry about it. Lets just see what it runs for the first one.

Rosamond, CA(Zone 8b)

Ok Thanks. I have one that I planted from seed. I will take a pix, it is white also. It is in a wet spot and has filtered sunlight in a sunny area but is behind tall plants. I have slipped on the fertilizer then, probably the reason for little blooms. Been too busy lately.
I think your mom should get the dog and just have someone call her daily just to say hi, you ok, then you know the dog will be fine if she is. Maybe that is all she would need to reassure her. Or they have those life line or medical alert necklaces that go straight to emergency dispatch and family is called, those things are cheap and are a life saver. As long as they don't have Alzhiemer or dimentia and forget they are wearing it, like my mil did.

Las Vegas, NV(Zone 9a)

My mother did not forget she had the alert, she pressed it once for my brother, 5 seconds later she pressed again which alerted her granddaughter, 5 seconds later, she pressed again which alerted the fire department and then 5 seconds later the 4th pressing called the ambulance. That went on for several days and they determined the alert was not going to work. She loved with us at the end of her life and either DH or I was always home, which worked out good for us.

I did absolutely nothing today except get my hose out and water the front landscape. I can wander around with the hose for hours. I find it very relaxing.

The weather is suppose to get back in the 90s by Monday so I guess I will just work around inside the house. DH seems to be getting better each day. I make sure he takes his medicine. That is a novel idea for him. Do what your Doctors tells you what to do.

We called a new Doctor's office today to get a new Internist. He has to approve all new patients. They will call back in a few days. our Cardiologist recommend him so I do not think we will have a problem. Probably runs a credit report. We are OK there. Our credit scores are above 800. How do I know. The credit card offers tell me.

This was blooming in my back landscape today. It is a re-bloomer.

Thumbnail by WormsLovSharon
Las Vegas, NV(Zone 9a)

Dawn, this plants loves the heat and spreads seeds everywhere. The new plants can be controlled because they are easy to pull. They sell in the nursery for about $25 and you can grow them all year long. They do disappear at the end of summer, when it gets cold but come right back the next spring stronger. Cannot remember the name. It can also grow in water and starts with a P.

Thumbnail by WormsLovSharon
Northeast, WA(Zone 5a)

No, Bob said his mom was adamant that she didn't want a dog and we live too far away to do much to help. We would take the dog in a minute but she is afraid if something happened to her the dog would be there by itself. You can't argue with that when we are so far away.

She has a life alert necklace but I don't think she wears it any more. It was a nuisance to her.

That is a pretty plant Sharon. Different texture. very pretty iris for this time of year too.

I really hate that that everything always hinges on a credit score Sharon. Not that I need any credit. I haven't had any in so long that they can't find any record of me. I know they would if I were really serious about buying something I needed it for.

But when I retired I paid off my house I had lived in for 28 years, then paid off my car, then sold the house. I have paid cash for everything since because I refuse to pay the interest.

Well, it's about time to hit the sack. Guess I will read for a few minutes. Bob got up with the flu this a.m. Hope he is better in the morning. He is like every other man and won't go to the dr. until he is dying then expects miracles.

Las Vegas, NV(Zone 9a)

I have credit cards but I do not pay any interest. I pay them off each month. And I get cash back so I am all for that.

When we built our home we paid cash, all of our financial advisers and friends told us we were being foolish. We do not look so foolish now.

JB thanks for your thoughts. Jnette, hope it is a good book.

Tomorrow is my Old Timers lunch with the Realtors. It is always fun but also sad. seeing everyone so old when we all started out very young 40+ years ago. The group gets smaller every year.

Love to you guys. This is most recent photo of oldest granddaughter and her boy friend.

She is 19, in college, he is 21, in college and going on a church mission and will be gone fore 2 years.

Northeast, WA(Zone 5a)

Well Sharon, I heard not long ago that they are going to start nailing people like you to pay also. Don't worry, they will get you.

LOL Sharon, sounds like a class reunion. Yuck. Never went to those.

They are a very nice looking couple. Is she going with???

Las Vegas, NV(Zone 9a)

I do not understand is she going with????

If the credit card companies start charging me anything, I will get rid of the two I use and use my debit card. I have a Nordstrom Visa I am changing because I no longer dress the way Nordstrom sells. I am getting a Chase Sapphire and the other is American Express because Costco does only take American Express.

If the bank starts charging for debit cards I will move to cash.

You are suppose to be reading.

Tulsa, OK(Zone 6b)

Mornin.

going with? Is she going to go on the mission with him?

the plant is papyrus. It was used to make paper long ago. there are a few different leaf structures. a kool thing is it can be rooted by cutting off a leaf, trim the pettals back to about 1 - 2". set upside down on water so the entire leaf is under water and the stem sticks up. I would love to have one if you get any to root.

Merry: I don't think they are ready to sell. let me winter them over and we can revisit it in the spring. They are not rooted enough for me to feel comfortable selling them. Also it will take 3 years to bloom if my thinking is correct. They are tissue culture I think.

well its that day again. laundry day. yuck

Kims gone batty. the siding guys are on week 3 and there seem to be too many issues coming up for the kind of job we were expecting. She is getting buyers remorse, but I think she will calm down once its done. in the 2 bedrooms we ended up with a double slider instead of regulat windows like we ordered. it would have been nice to get single sliders or the ones we ordered. The garage door is in and its nice to be able to open it finally. we got the ketless entry so we can open it from outside with a code. we had them put in 2 beveled glass windows in the door. they look kind of funny because there should have been more in the door.

I am hopefull that I will get to go outside and get a few things done today. its kinda overcast and feels like rain is coming any time.

The pic is of what our roots hope to look like. nice white color and fuzzy with lots of root hairs.

have a great day

I just got my pussy willows! Thanks so much JB- they look fantastic!!
Question- can I plant them in a protected spot outside now, or should I keep it indoors until spring, and then plant out?

Taylor Creek, FL(Zone 10a)

Papyrus will root 300 times faster than bamboo, so beware. Best to keep it in a bog planter contained from being aggressive.
Who ever wanted some plants, d-mail me request.

Good afternoon:
I just wanted to pass along a great buy I found while in oregon. I ended up ordering it over the phone from them. its "A - Z Encyclodedia of Garden Plants" by the American Horticulture Society. It was 19.99 as a bargin book. it wont be on their website as they discounted it down from suggested retail of $80.00. 1100 pages. they can be reached at 541.344.9431
Waldenbooks
271 Valley River Center
Eugene, OR 97401

the link below shows the book at amazon. I think its the previous edition but for the money well worth it. it covers 15,000 plants.

http://www.amazon.com/American-Horticultural-Society-Encyclopedia-Garden/dp/0756606160/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1284663434&sr=1-1#reader_0756606160

I would go ahead and plant it. just make sure during the winter to give it water when the temps are above freezing. Maybe I should cover winter protection and preperation to help your plants through the upcoming winter. anyone want me to chat about that?
Dave

Wrightstown, NJ(Zone 7a)

Plant the Pussy Willows outside now but be sure to give them water frequently.

Omaha, NE(Zone 5a)

Thanks so m uch- and I will remember to fence out the rabbits until the willows get big!

Wrightstown, NJ(Zone 7a)

You are welcome, they should grow just fine. Dave, you should have yours by now if she has hers. Open your mail Honey. The little red white and blue box.

Tulsa, OK(Zone 6b)

LOL naaa no need to its on the poarch. they are going to be planted this weekend.

my box is black

they look great
Dave

Sierra Foothills, CA(Zone 8a)

JB ~ They look awesome...very nice size! They just arrived today. I will plant them right away as they will stay moist in the ground better than in pots. I have a space for them already. How tall do they get? (They will be in the fenced garden only...no chance for the deer or rabbits to eat them!) I opened the package outside, but found no ants...we have been fighting them in our kitchen for 2 months and now with the cooler nights, I think they may have moved on, though occasionally I will spot one or two.

Jeanette ~ I am going to my 50th year HS reunion, to look at my old friends in about a month. Would you like some dwarf sweet peas that you can grow in a pot? If so please send me your address, OK?

Mary ~ Please take care after your surgery, OK? Did you want the tall sweet peas? I will probably send everything out on Monday.

Dave ~ Next week, OK? You will enjoy the book. It has lots of nice color pictures of many plants. We just had the fellow come and install the garage doors as we pay as we go as well, so last year there were no doors for the new garage, but at least we had a place to park out of the snow this year.

Sharon ~ How are you doing today? Is it cooler there yet? It should be soon...take care. How is DH?

OK, everyone that I have promised seeds and/or plants I will send them out on Monday. I will pack them up late on Sunday. Sorry to be so late. Have a good day everyone.

~ Evelyn

going with him to the church mission for 2 years.

What about Costco? I use my Visa debit card there.

LOL, Sharon, Dave got it. Dave, you all will love the house when it is done.
don't pick it apart now. But, how come they aren't doing it like you ordered? Mess up in communication or something? That is too bad.

Just got my pussy willows too JB!! They came thru with flying colors. Boy you all, wait until these are blooming!! They are beautiful. JB sent me some unrooted cuttings in the spring and they were so pretty!! Just gorgeous red and black. But, I couldn't get them to root.

Thank you so much JB. I owe you. But you have so many plants I can't imagine you wanting anymore from me. I'll think of something.

I had to take Bob into the ER this morning and they ended up keeping him for a day or 2. His regular dr. wasn't there. I think the last time this happened he talked his dr. into not keeping him. He got up yesterday and said he had the flu. Well this morning he couldn't breath so he called his dr. The other drs were all booked up so she told him to go to the ER.

It's things like this that makes me so mad when people say the ERs are filled up with people with no insurance. I cannot count the times I have gone into them and I have great insurance besides my Medicare. Always have had. So does Bob and I think that is why they keep us. To pay for all of the ERs.

Omaha, NE(Zone 5a)

Evie- according to the flier JB included in my plants, the black pussy willows get 8 to 12 ft tall. I potted mine up in an 8 inch pot until I can pick a good place-- the roots were so big I couldn't dare plant them in anything smaller, once I spread out the roots . I think I will dig out a lame bush (honneysuckle) I have and plant them there, but I'm still deciding...

Morrisville, PA(Zone 6b)

Hi peeps.

I'm still a wee bite groggy from the anesthia. Had a nice long nap this afternoon. I will see the eye surgeon tomorrow morning. Going to get a hair cut ... that way they can wash my hair without fear of getting anything damaging in my eye.

Saturday, I plan on visiting Dimeo blueberry bush farm in Hammaton, NJ to purchase bushes for myself and younger daughter. She is to drive ...I am to buy.

We had thunder and a rain shower ...not sure how long it lasted. A thunderstorm is forecasted for later this evening.

Evelyn .... 6 to 8 seeds for each of the tall and dwarf sweetpeas will be sufficient for me. I want them for the next growing season. i shall keep you and hubbys in my extra prayers as I always mention you all in my nightly prayers.

Love you all

Mary

Northeast, WA(Zone 5a)

I am also planting them in an 8 inch pot for right now. Mainly to keep them from the deer and rabbits. Bob isn't here to help me cage them in. I have an area that I need to get prepared for heeling my helebores in for the winter so I will put them in there also. My little helebores are doing so well in pots but they need to go into the ground for winter so they don't freeze. Wish I had a shed or something I could put things in.

Well gotta go see if those brugs are getting nubbies yet. I got an email from the post office saying they sent the 3 sided boxes for them. 38".

Miles City, MT(Zone 3b)

Hi everyone...I am here but not in a great mood, and don't want to bring anyone down. I am having a rough time right now, no energy to do anything. I know it will pass, so am just biding my time. Just wanted all of you to know I am still kicking. Lee

Rosamond, CA(Zone 8b)

I have seen that Papyrus plant here at the nursery, but never thought it would be good in this area with it being so dry. My Cannas struggle to bloom unless I dig a low trench so water pools when I water, the ones that are normal and at ground level, usually bloom for a day or two at a time, then die off.
I like that plant though. I was going to say it was Cannibus, however you spell it. lol

Northeast, WA(Zone 5a)

Well Sugarweed, Sidney, didn't have very nice things to say about it. They don't always sell good plants in the nurseries. You might want to research it first Dawn.

Northeast, WA(Zone 5a)

We all have days like that Lee. I haven't gotten anything done since my daughter's family got here. Then they left yesterday morning, and Bob went into the hospital today, so, I still am not getting anything done. However, I have decided to wait until most of the things on the decks freeze and then I will clean up. Except the things that need wintering over that is. I just have to figure out where to put those. My pantry isn't that big.

Rosamond, CA(Zone 8b)

Oh Jeanette isn't it worth it though. They come and then they go. Then life is mundane again.

Las Vegas, NV(Zone 9a)

On the plant, I told Dawn it was invasive if you do not pay attention. Dawn does have more land than I do. They are very easy to pull out of the ground. If they hid you may have to dig it up but I love the plant. I have 4 in my front landscape. I cut them down to the ground every winter. They take our heat and look tropical. The only problem I have had was two got really big and I dug them but had a difficult time cutting them into smaller plants. My hands and arms are not strong enough but a very healthy young man saw what I was trying to do and he stopped and helped me.

Dave I have about 25 babies growing in several areas in the landscape. I let them get a little larger and then give them away. My greenhouse partner and I are going to start selling them. The nursery here wants $25 a piece for them. I think we will sell them for $10. But I will send you a box full for just a big hug and sweet thoughts. Then you can grow them and sell them.

When I was younger and divorced, I would sit on my roof, take the side off my swamp cooler and just ponder inside. In less than 5 minutes, I would have up to 5 men from the neighborhood on the roof helping the poor blond with no man. Worked every time. And their wives were friends of mine. Sorry Dave, but men are so easy to work......

Jnette, no, Hannah is going to BYU College in Hawaii this semester. She is only going for the first semester Second semester she will be back at BYU Provo. She is a straight A student, even in college and was going to be a surgeon. But with what is happening to insurance, she changed to English. Needs to be like her mother. Marry someone with a good education and not work. Just volunteer. Her mother has a full college degree and has never worked a day after her husband graduated from Law school. He does contract law.

JB, I got the plants. They are beautiful. They are planted in my holding garden right next to Jnette's plants. They are now cousins. JB would you like some "Cyprea Involucratus". I can send you a box also. Put that in Google. It will pull up the plant Just a little different than papyrus but everyone thinks it is papyrus including myself until an expert told me different.

Evelyn, my 50th high school reunion is next week. They are holding it in Las Vegas. There was only 29 in our graduating class and two have died. They are having 5 events and I am going to 2.

DH is doing much better. Maybe because he is taking his medicine. I AM NOW REALLY IN CHARGE AND HE KNOWS IT.
I will never ever let him go to another doctors appointment without me.

Lee, I am so sorry you are depressed. Been there, done that. That is why I retired. High anxiety and high depression. I lost 65 pounds. My landscape went to he** and I really did not even know it. It took over 6 months to figure out what I had because my doctor thought some one like me would never have depression. I would not talk to anyone on the phone. I stayed in bed with no tv, no sound and no blinds up. I just stayed there and only got up to go to the bathroom. Would not eat and drank water. I was still getting disability pay and could still be getting it but it was making me more crazy that my office did not have Mother Winter there to help them, so I quit. You need to listen to lively music and take walks. It clears out your mind. And crying is OK. I will add you to my prayer list.

Jnette, I hope Dave is OK.

All I want for Christmas is those Blue Flowers. Lee, Evelyn and Jnette's neighbor have them. I dug up the ones you sent and there was nothing there. Nada.....

Merry take care of your eyes.

Sidney, how are your coleus?

Avianut, do not be such a stranger.

Love you all.

Las Vegas, NV(Zone 9a)

Jnette, we cross posted. I love to see company come and I also love to see therm go. Just to use to a very quiet home, except for the loud TV.

Pawleys Island, SC

Hi everyone, I just wanted to pop in and say I am trying to still kick, but I am better off being quiet right now. I had you all on my mind. I hope to be more sociable soon, Hope you all have a good day, linda

Rosamond, CA(Zone 8b)

Thanks you guys for all your input.
I am truly one who needs some invasive plants in some areas that I could use monotony of the same plants to fill up unlandscaped area that I don't plan to do something with. Low maintenance areas like the side of my driveway on the East side which is like a separate side of my home and looks like a desert patch of weeds at present. Need to pull a burn permit to get the rest. I am so allergic to them that when I used to pull them, I would have my throat close up.
