I had the cataract surgery yesterday on the 2nd eye. A crystal lens was implanted.

I visited the eye surgeon this morning.

Present eyesight is now 20/20.

Yes and plays baseball too while maintaining membership in the National Honor Society and studies guitar in his spare time. Most weeks he works with me for half a day doing the hard stuff I can no longer do. He will soon be sixteen.

Doc, Kudos to you and your family for providing the examples and tools that produce such a valuable citizen in today's world. He is not only a joy to his own family, but also another positive force in our collective universe.

I couldn't have said that better, so I'll just post it again..

NORTH CENTRAL, PA(Zone 5a)

Thanks for the kudos. None needed. We lost his mom when he was four. She then died with brain cancer when he was six. My wife and I in short order melded with our professional fireman son to raise the lad best we knew how. Mercy the plans that had to change for all. The bottom line is we figure this is what we were here for so let's get on with the program. In addition to that Betty works as a pinch hitter RN in her nursing home an average of four days a month. She retired as DON over ten years ago. We are all busy however there is lots of fun and pride in the program for all.

I photograph the many things we get into together. Early this past spring I got a three wheeled electric scooter. That gets me to the playing fields so I can capture the activities.
Then..........just this week we upgraded my camera lens from kit quality to something decent and much better. As Red Riding Hood said, "The better to see you with my dear". When my final day arrives I want to take that camera with me. My goal is to photograph and list on eBay that famous chair by the right hand of God. That should take care of my family for all time when the hammer comes down on it. LOL In the meantime we will soon be facing a scary thing called college. I would like to see the lad wrestle either with or against Penn State. I figure them to be #1 by that time.

Stand by..........we are not done yet and he is part of we for which we are most grateful.

doc--

You sure have a BIG heart and the results show!

Please tell me which of the above 4 Football players is your Grandson?
Maybe I missed it if you already ID'd it...

How is your NBC doing? Has it bloomed? Too young yet---maybe.
I gave my big one away to Bec. Took it with me to the Plant swap.
I should ask her how it is doing......I fret.....as they are ALl my "babies"...

What a "Mother hen" i am!

Gita.............the lad in blue on his first whole field kick off return for a touchdown.

Your plants may want to be fed a bit of fertilizer for acid loving plants and then stressed to encourage bloom. In real life they grow and reproduce by seed in extreamly difficult placing. An article we just read indicates that many of us feed and water them entirely to much.

As an old hen you look after your flock pretty well. LOL

Mount Bethel, PA(Zone 6a)

Wow, how often do you see a kickoff return result in a touchdown. I have 7 grandsons. Those old enough play at least 2 sports a year. The oldest one just got into U MASS and will be playing baseball there. I will spend all my free time going to those games in early spring. You're so right, Doc. They're definitely the most exciting flowers.

My SIL is the head strength training coach at U PENN. My DH was a 4 year varsity basketball player there. If PENN STATE doesn't work out, and U PENN looks attractive, let me know.

Hi Everyone,
I have been lurking because I am mostly a tropical person. I do have a few outside plants I deal with but mostly I propagate and sell tropical starter plants on DG and eBay. I have been on this list for a long time but I felt like a stranger because there has been very little going on. I do know Mary from another forum, HI MAR....but most of those people are on the West Coast and they are without a doubt a wonderful group, I am in bed when they are talking, so I really would like to be a part of an East Coast group even if I only do tropicals.
I am on tropical forums also, but again, most of those people are very far away. LOL

Anyhow, it is good to see someone is doing something on this list . I saw Gita and her pink mandeville and am so jealous. I have one that you would die laughing if you saw it. I bought it from Logee's a few years ago and it sat in the Greenhouse and did nothing until I put it outside this year. Now it is almost 4 ft. tall but from the pot up about 5 inches there are leaves, then the stem is bare for another few feet and then the beautiful pink flowers are blooming at the top. It is so funny. I must send you a picture of it. I was trying to figure out if I should cut it back after it finished blooming or what. They bloom forever and I love them. Have you ever tried to propagate any of them? The only other one I have is Patented, so I can not try that one. It is a beautiful red and I do cut that back each year. Please tell me how you get yours to look so gorgeous. Hummingbirds just love them too. Hope to talk to you all soon again. JB

Oh Mary, how is your eye. I am blind in my right eye and so careful with my good eye. I am not going to have cataract surgery on my good eye until I absolutely can not see. The doc said he does not want to take any chances of something going wrong. Scares the you know what out of me. Hope you are doing well. Hugs Sweetie.

BTW, you PA people, I am a Lancaster County Native, removed to NJ to be closer to my daughter. My son is still practicing law in Lanc. and lives in Lititz. I still consider myself a PA Dutch person. They tell me here in NJ I still say some things that sound really dutch.
Oh well, who cares as long as I am still talking. LOL

Wrightstown, NJ(Zone 7a)

Roses, it is so beautiful. Mine needs to get more leaves. Yours looks great too. What the heck am I doing wrong? I put them both in the Greenhouse now and they are blooming from bare stems. It is really funny looking. I need leaves. Holy Crap...I need leaves big time.

Mount Bethel, PA(Zone 6a)

Thanks J. Put a little vine in the pot with them so that they can share the leaves. Cardinal Vine, Japanese Morning Glory (small light leaves, not invasive),
Clematis or Blushing Susie (picture below).

WELCOME..... JB
We welcome anyone from anywhere that would like to chat. There are more than a few real fine folks here that may even be able to come up with the right answers when you have a question. LOL I'm pretty sure we would like to hear about your hobby and how you get the critters growing at your house.

As to the wrong answers.................well once in awhile we might find one of those too. However still others sometimes help sort things out if we need prompted.

I've been here several years. I have rarely been aware of things being said that should not be said on any social site. We don't eat lurkers or old timers either. Hope this boils down to the fact I think highly of the nature of business day in and day out on this site.

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

JB--Welcome from me too!
We need some "fresh blood" here.,......

I believe the mandevilla is just an annual here. If you have a greenhouse--that may be a different story....
I would only keep it in there for the winter--and then out it goes--like end of May.

The red Mandevilla is a bit different. They seem to be more shrub-like, even though they make a lot of viney runners.
The pink one (like mine) is the one with the leathery, stiff leaves. I personally like this plant better.

I bought mine this Spring at a Nursery. it was in an 8" pot and only about 2' tall.
They come on these small trellises, with all the stems wound up and secured all over them.

I try to, gently, unwind the stems so they can "march on" up my trellis...I believe this helps a lot.

DOC--Do you mean my Mandevilla looks like it needs some acid food?
I am sure it could use something--as I have had a mandevilla growing in this same pot for 3 years now.
I will continue to do so--but will work in something 'good" next year before I plant one.

Gita

This was taken in July--just starting out and blooming away

Roses...I love your suggestion to cheat a little with those companion vines! Bet blushing susie will be on everyones 'want' list for seed or swap.

Wrightstown, NJ(Zone 7a)

May I vent today please?

I think I told you I sell starter plants on DG Marketplace and eBay. Well, on DG it is more difficult for the buyer because they make an order then you must get back to them with the shipping and handling, etc. using their address. Sometimes people sign up as members to DG, make an order and never return to complete payment, or even tell you to cancel it.
I have ask administration if this could not be fixed in some way but they say no it can not.
Then you wait so many days and cancel the order. Time wasted and plants on hold unless you have enough to just sell until they are gone. Also, there is no other way to talk to the buyer except dmail and if they do not return, they never see the dmail. Most of them have not made the settings pass it to their email addresses. They are just learning or something. This is the way it has been in the past, but today, I got a notice from the administration that I had a sale and the buyer is waiting for my reply. That sale was on Sept. 17th and the same day I wrote a dmail back to the buyer asking for a complete mailing address so I could caculate the postage. I check daily for a reply but up until last night I did not have one. This morning I had this notice from the administration that I had an order that needed to be managed. Like I didn't know that? It was signed by Dave.
I can not believe this came from administration because it is really none of their business how I conduct my sales since I pay $100 a year plus to sell here.Plus, they will not fix the problem that exists regarding people signing on and ordering the same day and not returning. I really lost it and wrote them an dmail back that could get me thrown off the list. They were wrong. I know they monitor our forums and delete messages or edit them if you use naughty words like d*** and h***. (I got told about that). I am 82 years old and I must admit once in awhile I will let it go. I am a Marine Corp Widow and sometimes I forget myself. But, having said that, I find censoring my business transactions is a bit nervy.. So, if you do not hear from me everyday from here on in, my email address is JBerger431@aol.com and you can feel free to contact me to see if I am dead or just been thrown out. Thanks for listening to my B*******!. JB

NORTH CENTRAL, PA(Zone 5a)

I see nothing that should cause this marine to get the axe. Besides that any Marine Corp Widow bright eyed and bushy tailed at eighty two has a right to kick butt any time she may want to. You have likely seen more real hell than most reading your words. I am proud to salute you.....yes mam we love you in a very special way. God I admire you. I hope I have your spunk when I arrive at your age.

Wrightstown, NJ(Zone 7a)

Well, Doc, what nice things to say. Thank you. Darn it, if I wasn't so old I would hike back up there to PA and give you a big hug. I guess I am a bit feisty, but the longer you live the more difficult it is to be patient. Having lived through WWII, VN, Korea and now Iraq et al, it seems to me having to "fight" people in real life is such a waste of time. I have seen so much death from wars in my younger years along with the fact that the people in charge are such jerks about how they sent us around the world to do dirty deeds, I just want to live out the rest of my life in peace and contentment. My tropicals, especially the fragrant ones provide me with so much of that I sometimes feel guilty for being so happy while there are other families going thru what I went thru year after year until we got too old. I am so fortunate to now find new friends from new places. I guarantee I will do my best to be a "fun" member of this family. I just have one thing to say, "Don't P*** me off". LOL There I go again, being naughty. Oh well, Here is a big HUG for all of you. Time for a Martini. JB

NORTH CENTRAL, PA(Zone 5a)

Yes it does get more interesting too. I just concluded a nine communication deal to arrive at a suitable date for someone with a very tight schedule. No kidding I no sooner than signed the appointment schedule in that persons favor and guess what. She wanted to change again. I told that person a thang or two. LOL I guarentee you she is seeking someone else to do business with.

Morrisville, PA(Zone 6b)

JB you hit the nail on the head when you described yourself as fiesty! You are too modest to acknowledge that you are also generous to a fault, witty, hard-working, considerate, and compassionate.

However, you should consider this. If someone as consciencious as you received notification that you were remiss in responding to a customer ..... then the % of vendors receiving similar notices must be extremly high.

JB .... the vision in both eyes is now 20/20. I used to need bifocals. I wish you would see my eye doctor. He is affiliated with Wills Eye and is the CEO of Total Eye Care. He has an office in Hamilton twp. D-mail me if you want his name.

Yesterday my daughter took a trip to DiMeo Farms in Hammonton, NJ. We left with 5 beautiful blueberry bushes.

Mary

Wrightstown, NJ(Zone 7a)

Merry, I have South Jersey Eye Asso. and they also are associated with Wills Eye. I really trust him and he has kept me going for a long time. Age is a factor too here I am sure. If I can still drive my jeep and truck (not at the same time)....I am happy , and I do just fine. My sight in my good eye is good.

I bought 2 blueberry bushes two years ago. I kept them on the deck the first year and got about 8 berries. This past year I planted them at the end of the Iris garden (no place else to put them) and I got nothing. They also need bees to pollinate. Our bees came late this year. It was so Hot and dry and irrigation was seldom since that particular garden was not being productive after Memorial Day, I guess they needed much more than they got. Oh well, Emerys Blueberry Farm is closer to me and I buy alot, or my friends pick their own and give me some, then I freeze them and have them all winter. I love blueberries. Their baked goods make me crazy too. I love to eat.

Speaking of eating, I think since I worked so hard all weekend and I need to start working on the advertising promos for the Christmas Tree Sales, I may go into town and have a pizza. LOL It is a beautiful day and I am tired, so that sounds like a plan. The surf is up big time so fishing is out. I am too old to surf, so pizza is good.

Speaking of the weather, we are in for another week of HOT weather and NO rain. Our baby trees are dying like flies. We have a well to irrigate but we need to watch that too.
This storm off shore is bringing alot of wind whnich dries things out even more. Boy, this has been a really difficult time for some of us farmers who grow things that need lots of water. Darn storms used to bring rain, now it is just wind. GRRRRRRRR!

Talk later. Have a great day and Merry, that is justh great news about your eyes. I am so happy for you. Hugs. JB

NORTH CENTRAL, PA(Zone 5a)

We have a three step program leading to serious water shortage. We got the first request for volunteer savings just this morning. It also serves notice to industry that they may have mandatory cut backs soon. In the meantime while most ordinary citizens do try to save we have a cotton picking country club that thumbs its nose at the requests and sometimes even defies the first mandatory cut back notices. They are very high on the list as a large summer time user. This sure gives me a warm fuzzy feeling towards the membership grounds management committee and our township supervisors whose office adjoins the club grounds.

Crozet, VA

JBerger, you just made my day. You go girl!!! I agree with you on by reaching your age you deserve to be a bit impatient with ignorance, laziness or sloppiness. Even though the old body is not what it used to be, I am ever amazed at how much wisdom comes with aging. It seems that things that used to knock the breath out of me but good, now don't seem to have such an impact. I can still find myself in snits but they no longer last days, weeks or months.

Dave's Garden members were here for me some years back when I joined and found myself being faced with quite a few physical unpleasantries. If I hadn't had the folks to encourage and love me along the way, I fear what my mental condition would be today. I have been here at least five years now and only rarely have I run in to wolves in sheeps clothing. For the most part everyone is just down to earth, plain folks who love gardening. I have been fortunate to meet quite a few of the MAG'ers at plant swaps and found those attending to all be very top notch people.

Anyway, I hope this forum continues. I have to admit to being pulled in many directions at times and have several web sites that I am involved in. Having limited computer hours, some of the sites go left unwatched for periods of time. I haven't been very active for quite some time now, but am still a paid up member for a while longer. Feeling the way I do about how good Dave's was for me once upon a time, I would hate to see it pack up and go away. Hope that doesn't happen. You good folks have a good week. Gonna be a hot one here later this week too.

Ruby

Wrightstown, NJ(Zone 7a)

I'm back and I did not get Pizza. I was very good. I got a Pretzel stuffed with Jalapeno cheese. Happy Heartburn everyone. Oh how I love them, they come out of the oven hot and if you enjoy a bit of "heat" they are sooooo good. That is just one of the many things WAWA has that I like.
I put up my Fall signs too. One says "An Old Bat Lives Here" and the other says "the Witch is IN". Speaking of old Witch, I am still having a problem with the Administration. They can not find the dmail I got telling me how to run my business, so I had to send them a copy. They were more interested in changing the signature from Dave to whoever, than they were the fact I do not want them telling me how to run my business, especially when it is not necessary. They need to fix the problem so if they want to spy on us they do it correctly and then I would not get letters telling me to do something I have already done. Jerks. I feel sorry for Terry, she is not the bad guy here, but no one else has come forth to talk to me except her.
Back to attending to the birds. I have a small flock of hookbill birds (6) now. I used to breed and sell Exotic Birds for about ten years. I had the Laurel Run Bird Farm in Cream Ridge, NJ and had a wonderful time and about 100 birds until my Mother needed more attention and I did not have the energy to feed, water and sell birds so I down sized and finally , when she died I sold all the rest of the birds and the real estate and built an extension on to my daughter and SILs farmhouse here in Burlington County, NJ. They have a Christmas Tree Farm, and I have a small Greenhouse where I raise my tropical plants. I had to be Certified by the State as a Nursery in order to sell and ship according to NJ Regulations. So, my GH is inspected each year and I am a certified nursery. LOL Just another license to buy. When I sold birds, I needed a license to do that too. Only in NJ could that happen I guess. I am actually a "Horse" person. Tell you about that another time. Must get busy. JB
P>S> the photo is of some of my baby Parrotlets I used to breed, handfeed and sell. I still have the little featherless guy in the middle, his name is Rover. He was the runt of those two clutches shown here, but a perfect male Pacific Parrotlet, so I kept him.

Errrm, just to clarify something: this issue is related to a system-generated email message that our Marketplace sellers get to remind them on the status of any outstanding order.

The system has no way of knowing if a pending order is due to the seller waiting on something from the buyer, or an order that has been overlooked or forgotten. The messages go out via email (at the request by vendors, who wanted to receive them at their own email address rather than via dmail), which means we don't have a copy of it internally. Jacquie, thank you for sending a copy to me - we can get the closing line changed.

But the system will still send out these reminders. They are not meant to be critical of a vendor's own processes, but are meant to help vendors keep track of their sales that are "in the pipeline" and not yet completed.

Wrightstown, NJ(Zone 7a)

Terry and all:
Anything I say here I would say to the Administration directly. It is called constructive criticism....not being nasty just concerned that my ability is being questioned and that I need help to do my job correctly. I am sorry but I resent that. I did not mean to bring any displeasure or discontent to this forum. I will drop it now and keep it private so the rest of you can get on with your peace and quiet.
Please forgive me and understand, It is difficult for me to get used to being watched and censored. Not exactly what I expected from this site and believe me I love it here. Just having a problem understanding, why me? When I was working for the Government I knew the FBI had to keep checking on me but they had a very good reason....I am not sure what the purpose of the DG checks are for. I think maybe I need to get out of here if I am not happy and especially if they are not happy with me and feel a need to keep censoring me. It just makes me feel very uncomfortable. I will take this private from here in until I close down my MarketPlace sales.

JB

Morrisville, PA(Zone 6b)

JB .... I want to quote something from DG's Marketplace tutorial page,

prompt and good communication is critical to a successful sale and a happy customer

DG is remiss in the above ..... there is a definite communication problem .

Seems to me they should take into account the possibility that the customer may not have responded to your d-mail and/or has not forwarded payment.

I know that because of the horrible continious heat we experienced, you had to cancel or delay orders.

In my opinion DG owes you an apology. Terry's response does not include one.

It would be nice if DG and you could work together in creating a system that does not step on anyone's toes.

DG needs members like you ... your conversation frequenly brings me a smile .... and sometimes a good laugh.

Maybe DG is not happy that you sometimes sent peeps stuff for free and refuse reimbursement for shipping... how can they make more money when you do things like that?

MARY

Murfreesboro, TN(Zone 7a)

Mary, with all due respect, the system works the way it's supposed to - the reminders are intended to facilitate prompt communication. If the order proceeds through the system within a certain amount of time, then there are no reminders sent.

If a vendor has communicated with the seller, and is waiting on them for the next step, they can ignore the reminder. (I's like your oven timer reminding you to check on a cake you're baking; if you just checked on it, the timer may still go off, but you aren't too upset or concerned when it does. You either re-set it or turn it off.)

I'm sorry that a reminder was misconstrued to be anything other than that. I have corresponded with Jacquie over the weekend via our helpdesk, and now here. Hopefully we've now clarified things and the conversation here can return to other more interesting topics :-)

Hi Merry Mary--Congrats! I have been tempted to get laser to correct mine but holding out- by the time I go for it I might be ready for cataract surgery anyway.
