Thanks for the welcome BUTTONEER. I also like the shower curtian. You somehow overlooked another new dditition to this forum. She's a fiesty one ....but very lovable and has a heart of gold. She is known as JB.
I have good news for JB ....I am watering my grass out back ....that should bring on the thunder storms .... a rumble we would relish to hear.
MARY
FYI ... JB resides less than 20 miles from me and we DESPERATELY need rain.
WHAT'S HAPPENING TO THE MID-ATLANTIC FORUM?????
Amen sister! We definately need rain. The storm today caused a lot of wind damage, killed a few people and put the rain down so fast most of it ran off. I have a well and I have been using it. My rain hit damp soil and stayed home.
Thank you for the welcome Button, I hope we can get together on Facebook. I sent you a Dmail.
We had severe storms last night and they all went around us. I do not think it rained 1/2 inch. In fact I know it did not. Today it is 90 deg. again. The severe weather changes make me crazy.( or crazier.) whichever. LOL
Barney, my Jack Russell had another one of his liver attacks last night and we were up most of the night. Poor dog. He is going to be 13 in a few days and is in great shape but his liver enzymes are off the wall at times. He takes meds for it but once in awhile it causes him so much stomach distress that he gets really sick. I hope I nipped it in the bud with meds I have at home for him. I called the vet but have not heard back yet. I am just going to keep him quiet today.
This afternoon we are mowing grass. Why I will never tell you. It is so dry and there is very little grass to mow. It is also too hot to be out in the sun for long. I really have minded the intense sun this summer. Must be my BP meds kicking in.
Must get moving. Hugs to all and have a great day. JB
We have a 10-yr old rat terrier: Fritzie who, thank God, is in great shape. I d-mailed you on the facebook.
I can not remember my FAcebook ID. I thought it was my email addy, but obviously it is not and my name at the top is Jacquie F. Berger, I need to try and remember what it is. I will try and find you..
I've been lost in Yahoo so long I am no longer me anymore. I've pretty well decided that there is no part of Yahoo I really need to have.
The only response I seem to be able to get is the run them in circles type auto responses. I can stand still for that at least thirty seconds. LOL
Complicated does not work for me. Some of these sites make it sooooooooooooo difficult to get on and if I do not write it down immediately, I forget. LOL I am such a mess at times. I hae been playing around with the Learn2Grow group. Very nice people but a bit difficult to get used to. I like it.
We're back, 3 weeks on the road, just getting home about 6:30pm Sunday. Pretty much got everything unloaded, but not put away Monday. I spent yesterday putting a new radiator in my DI L's car since my son is TDY at the Philadelphia Naval Ship Yards, and helping Holly clean the fridge so I may shop. Today we were off to Loch Haven to pick up Josh and the grand puppy, and admire the fall foliage from Hyner View far above the West Branch Susquehanna. We packed the in-laws along as they love the northern mountains and had a late lunch at the old farmer's market,(Foxes Restaurant) in Loch Haven. I hope to get some mowing done and gather the tomatoes before the nor'easter gets here. Ric
Welcome JBerger!
Doc, I waved when we went by. LOL
Ric...........I saw you on the bypass but you were yac yacking to much. Most likely about the beautiful fall color this year. I spent a lot of time out there this past weekend too. LOL
LOL Doc, I was the burgundy Explorer full of old farts, with the red Old Town kayak on top. Ric
Buttoneer,
I too have Rat Terriers. One is about 8 lbs and 16 years old. The other one is about 18 lbs and 7 years old. I just LOVE them!!! Have had RT's for the last 26 years. Such good dogs!
MULCH .... have a question. I have access to lots of shredder paper on a daily basis. We bought a bunch of cedar mulch at a end of summer sale. I was going to use the cedar mulch on my beds and wondered if that would be good for them. Also thought about using shredded paper first, then the mulch. Any opinions on that??? If it's good, how much paper to how much mulch?
Thanks!!!!
Patti
Sure that will be OK. Use what you wish because that shredder paper fluffs up. I would wet it down good before covering with mulch. An inch or more after wetting down would not hurt a thing. I used to lay down whole newspaper sections and over lap them an inch deep. Cedar is an oily wood. It will remain as mulch longer before it converts to humus.
You need to wet the paper down so that it does not wick water out of your soil. When wet it will handle and cover more easily. The paper will break down a lot faster than your mulch.
Thanks Doc.
Thats a big job. Looks good.
This rain should help your grass, Mary. Stay dry and pray for some warm sunshine this weekend so you can watch it sprout. LOL
That is a HUGE job! Wanna come do mine??????
Sorry Crit .... too much to do here.
I have to ride shotgun .... squirrels are deciding to bury treats in the soften soil ..... grrrrr.
Stop feeding corn if it is you that is the supply line. It will grow next spring but mows off and gives up. Roasted peanuts will not grow.
99% of my plants are under glass now and it was sooo much fun trying to get palm trees, bird of paradise & traveller's palms into the greenhouse with this 30 mph wind. So glad it's 99% done. I have a couple pond plants to move in and one more pot with Dipledenia. Jeez, winter is really rushing here.
Buttoneer---
And--I am still stressing out on how I will get, in my small, dark basement---
-3 large Brugmansias (gonna cut them back)--want any cuttings????
--10 pots of Clivias for their dormancy
--6 pots of well established Amaryllis. Same old--Same old--every year...
--6 pots/2 window boxes of Pregnant Onion
--One big pot of Climbing Onion
And--every other plant that has to come in somewhere in my house...
So--once again, it will become this living jungle.....
I do it EVERY year--and still survive.....
Gita
This is my Shop----the lowest level of my 4-level house. Dark...dingy..NO light....Smelly...
Here reside my 12 pots of Clivias until Spring.....ALL under ONE 4'light fixture in my basement/Shop...
They made it through last Winter.....
This was he fist winter after I divided them all from their crowded 12"pot....
Believe it or not--all these were in ONE, 12", root-bound pot!
Three of them, bloomed this spring. Hoping more of them will next spring...
I plan to sell them all....
In this same "Shop" reside my 3 large/cut back Brugs. and my 6 pots of Amaryllis.
So far--all have survived with NO problems!
Plant are tough!!!!!!
Gita
Gita, I LOVE your windows! Just like Home. What I want to do is get rid of all duplicates, giving me room for other plants I don't have. I cut about 5 feet of leaves off my tallest palm tree yesterday just to be able to get it inside. I have two Travelers Trees (Ravenala madagascarensis) with pups all over. Next spring, I want to dump them out of their pots & try to remove the pups. I have had them for many many years and hate to get rid of them. I am leaving a couple plants (huge pineapple) and some cacti outside because I just don't have the room. Maybe I will put them out at the curb tomorrow & put a "Free" sign on them. They will get good homes that way. I did bring my huge pot of Datura tatula's in the greenhouse. Smelly old things, but I love the flowers. They all have huge seedpods on them. I grew a Datura stramonium (Jimson weed) and it is huge, full of lovely lavender flowers & seedpods, but that baby stays outside. I'll save the seeds. I have several Amaryllis, which I have grown to love, and for the first time this year, Hippeastrum striatum bloomed for me and the pot is full of plants. Just a charmer. Well, don't want to bend anybody's ear off. But sure glad most of the plants are in.
Buttoneer,
Yeah! I think as "junked up" as the windows look--It does lend a cozy aspect to this place....
I have not yet taken any plants in. We had 84* two days ago. Now it is hanging in the 60's.
VERY windy today. Blowing all kinds of things over....I went out to right up my big pot of Hibiscus--
and while i was out there, this huge gust of wind came and blew down 4 pots if X-Mas cactus
from a heavy, tiered metal stand I have. They all came crashing down!!!
There were huge sections that broke off from my biggest pot---already full of buds....:o(
Oh well! Nothing I can do--except--gather the pieces all up and start new pots.
This is my worst dilemma--always starting new plants from bits and pieces.....Don' we all???
I will "shoot myself" in the big toe if I start another Spider Plant....
Did you count how many I had on those little shelves in front of that window?
I have been doing a lot of clean-up work. Pulling out this and that....cutting back things,
and getting ready for the BIG haul (inside..).
October blooms---Oh yeah!!!
All three of my Brugs are popping about now. .....They always bloom the best in October...
I think they like the cooler weather....
So--here is my new "Maya" (or whatever it is called) I got from Cylburn Arboretum
where I donated my monster Maya last fall.
I went to their market Day in the Spring and talked them out of one free rooted cutting (they had done many and
were selling them for, like $12!) for my generosity. It was well growing--about 12" tall in an 8" pot.
Here it is in it's October glory...an amazing specimen--no matter how big it is...
Hard to get a good shot when the sun is shining on it....makes it all blotchy!
The bricks on the pot are to keep it from blowing over.
The other one behind it is the big, pink NOID...Great bloomer!
Will be cutting the 2 big ones back before I can bring them inside.
Let me know if you want any stem cuttings......The other one I have is a Dr. Seuss....my fave!
Gita
Not a bloom--but here is my HUGE Ric Rac Cactus.
It is humongous! I took it down and put it on my round picnic table today.
I was afraid the winds would blow it down and I would lose half of it....
I tell you--the spread of this HB sitting flat on a table is about 4 feet!
This HB started just like that--from my original Ric Rac that also got blown over
and half of it broke off several years ago. I stuck the whole piece in a new HB--and it rooted----
That is what this one grew from...I am hoping next Summer I will see many blooms on it!
This table is about 4-1/2' in diameter.....My EX built it--it is so heavy!
Gita
Your Brazilian Plume Flower is A-B-S-o-L-u-T-E-y GORGEOUS!
The Ric-Rac looks like a neat plant.
Gita .... you had me going with that 1st picture of the ric rac .... I was trying to find the table ....LOL.
MARY
Gita, Any chance you can root a start from that Brazilian Plume Flower? I picked one up from the Conservatory a couple of years ago but it had scale and I finally gave up.
